McCain, the FBI, and Showergate

The Fake News Showergate saga just keeps getting better. Now McCain and Carl Bernstein are involved.
Sworn Donald Trump enemy John McCain admitted Wednesday that he passed the dossier of claims of a Russian blackmail plot against the president-elect. The Arizona senator issued a public statement amid mounting questions of his exact role in the affair - and how a document riddled with errors and unverifiable claims came to be published.

'Late last year, I received sensitive information that has since been made public,' he said. 'Upon examination of the contents, and unable to make a judgment about their accuracy, I delivered the information to the Director of the FBI.'

The chain of how the document reached the FBI is not officially known. However Carl Bernstein, the Watergate reporter who contributed to the first story about its existence, published by CNN on Tuesday afternoon, suggested that McCain was handed it by a former British ambassador to Moscow.

Bernstein told CNN: 'It came from a former British MI6 agent who was hired from a political opposition research firm in Washington who was doing work about Donald Trump for both republican and democratic candidates opposed to Trump.

'They were looking at Trumps business ties, they saw some questionable things about Russians, about his businesses in Russia, they in turn hired this MI6 former investigator, he then came up with additional information from his Russian sources, he was very concerned by the implications of it, he then took it to an FBI colleague that he had known in his undercover work for years, he took it to this FBI man in Rome who turned it over to the bureau in Washington in August.

'And then, a former British ambassador to Russia independently was made aware of these findings and he took the information to John McCain – Senator John McCain of Arizona – in the period just after the election, and showed it to McCain – additional findings.

'McCain was sufficiently disturbed by what he read to take it to FBI director James Comey himself personally, they had a five minute meeting the two men, very little was said, McCain turned it over to him and is now awaiting what the FBI’s response is to that information.'

The identity of the former British ambassador has not been disclosed.

Only one former British ambassador to Washington remains in UK government service, Sir Tim Barrow, who went on to be Foreign Office political director and is now Britain's ambassador to the European Union.
Obama was a terrible president. No doubt about it. Dreadful. But it really does appear that McCain would have been considerably worse. Anyhow, by the time this is over, I won't be surprised if Lee Harvey Oswald, Madonna, and Woodstock all somehow factor in.

Meanwhile, the God-Emperor Ascendant himself is giving a press conference that will presumably address this. He's every bit as combative as during the campaign; now he's talking about the DNC vulnerability to hackers and "the horrible things" that John Podesta said about Hillary.

The media is addressing him as "Mr. President-Elect". Feels good. HOLY CATS! He just announced that both the President and the Vice-President are NOT governed by conflict-of-interest laws and has been for several administrations.

I don't think the media is ready for this level of openness.

"I am not going to give you a question. You are fake news"

Gotta love the Democrats and Republicans working together to oppose people who actually have the country's best interests at heart. My hope is that the eventual fallout from this is McCain's ruin in his last years. I want him to hang on just long enough to see his daughter's 'career' as a talking head bimbo go down in flames because of the taint of being associated with him.

Rodents.

The GOPe had to demonstrate some resistance to Obama, with McCain you're looking at comprehensive amnesty in the 1st 100 days and at least one more war.

You can practically hear the Jason Bourne music as you read this. Even if any of this had a whiff of credibility, I couldn't bring myself to care for the simple reason that nobody bothered to investigate Obama as a presidential candidate to this degree. Nobody seriously followed up on his ties to known communist and domestic terrorist, Bill "Genocide the Incorrigibles" Ayers, or the credible idea that he was maybe possibly not a born-American. What a farce.

You know, despite how long it's been since the election, I still find it amusing that friggin' DONALD TRUMP is going to be president. I don't mean that in a negative fashion. I just find it funny that it's him. It's ridiculous, and hopefully in a good way, that someone previously known for stamping his name on everything and saying "you're fired" in a reality TV series is now leading "the greatest country in the world."

Heck, just writing that amused me. Here's hoping the wall goes up soon, and so fast it slams into the faces of anyone trying to cross.

I listened to the entire press conference. I sensed no softening of Mr. Trump's style and his disdain for those in the press that her refers to as "dishonest" was fully on display. I particularly enjoyed when some clown was shouting demands that President Trump answer him and President Trump shut him down and then ignored him. It also appears that President Trump is not backing down in regards to immigration or in levying a punitive tax on products imported by companies who shut down plants here to take advantage of low wages elsewhere.

All-in-all I found the event both entertaining and reassuring. If he continues to handle the media as he did then I will be watching these things just for the entertainment value.

the mainstream media with assistance of Trump opponents are creating a climate where anything coming from the internet can be dismissed as bullshit.

perhaps that's what they're trying to do.

that's not what it's accomplishing though.

what it's doing is making Trump, himself, immune to criticism.

and it's also tarring and feathering the mainstream news media as the major proponents of Fake News.

consider, the intelligence agencies passed this on. but they HAVE too, that's their job. they have a report on 'x', they need to inform their superiors that they have a report of 'x'.

the problem for the intelligence agencies arises in the analysis of the intelligence.

IF they actually took this /pol/ack story and ran with it
THEN every intelligence officer involved needs to be Court Martialled for dereliction of duty.

the creation of False Intelligence is a major component of the intelligence game between the nations. hell, we spoofed the Germans about where the D-day landing was going to be by putting fake plans on a dead body and allowing it to wash up on beach in Europe.

simply HAVING an intelligence report saying 'x' doesn't mean a god damn thing AND NO INTELLIGENCE OFFICER WORTH A RABBIT SHIT should have fallen for a story like that which was un-corroborated and really bizarre.

they should have kicked this report upstairs ... but the accompanying analysis should have noted the numerous problems with the story.

Trump recognizes that the conventional rules of the game are nonsense. Then he runs circles around the players. In the campaign, he identified the MSM gatekeepers and made them work for him with free publicity while highlighting their hypocrisy. In the hearings, he shines their spotlight back on them to the delight of a disgusted populace.
He understands leverage in many forms, whether via control of information or via control of negotiation. Now, will that turn out well for the country? Who knows as it is still very early in the process and still before the swearing in ceremony.

"We've had some terrible presidents", said David Brinkley in an interview I saw on broadcast TV many years ago. Pressed to be more specific, he allowed that he hadn't much cared for Jimmy Carter. He was surely right about that, but lately we have also had some incredibly bad presidential election losers. To be specific, three in a row from 2000 through 2008 -- Al Gore, John Kerry, and John McCain. Good God, any of them would have been every bit as disastrous as the winners proved to be.

If a senator was giving information that might implicate a presidential candidate and indicate that candidate was subject to blackmail would it not be proper for him to pass it onto the intelligence community without public comment?

Not saying MaCain is not an ass, or that he has good judgment (just look at Syria), but him passing on information he was given seem to me to be proper. The issue seems to be with the agency vetting the intelligence and or its use of it.

And it will get much harder for them in nine days. If you're a TV broadcaster, the one thing you MUST have is that license to broadcast. And Trump's FCC can take it away. Forever.

The other irony being that I'd bet an honest reporter with serious questions could get an in-depth interview out of Trump. He'd do it just to reward competence.

The funniest part is, this was all a hoax against Nevertrumpers during the primaries.

Now we know what they were so gleeful about in the last week of October. Remember how they said there was something big, really big, that was going to break on Trump in the last full week befor the election, the same time that we were waiting to see what Comey would do? Remember how we were finally going to see how this was the establishment's master plan all along, to get Trump the nomination and then sink him with the major dirt when it was too late?

From the moment McCain signed on to sponsor the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance legislation, he was immediately and forever disqualified from EVER getting my vote. The man is a true elitist who believes he's better than the rest of us. The explicit purpose of the First Amendment is to allow the citizenry to criticize, and publicly excoriate public official, just as the explicit purpose of the Second Amendment is to arm the citizenry so they can "kill the bastards" if they try to lord it over us. McCain is in the camp of those who want to lord it over us, and silence our ability to criticize him in any way. He is completely UNFIT for public service.

Feingold was turned out of office, and McCain should also be turned out of office. It is a civic crime that he still holds office, and the people of Arizona should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to re-elect him. He is why, for the first time in my adult life, I did not vote for the Republican nominee for President in 2008. Then, the Republicans nominated a Mormon for President in 2012, who was behind the precursor to Obamacare with Romneycare in Massachusetts. Once again, I didn't vote for the Republican.

Don't get me wrong. I refused to vote for Obama both years also. But although they collectively were hated by the Republican elite in 2016, both Ted Cruz and Donald Trump defied the partileiters to run outsider campaigns. I initially believed Trump was a Democrat stalking horse for Clinton, and backed Cruz. But Trump has proven me wrong, and I now believe he's the ONLY candidate who could have overcome the extraordinary effort by the mainstream press to put Clinton in office. I just don't see how Cruz could have pulled off victories in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin like Trump did.

While I have been hesitant to jump aboard the Trump chain due to lack of trust, the actual message he's been delivering is EXACTLY what America needs. I also believe that whatever moderation Trump may have had in his conservative bona fides, the Press and the Democratic Party are driving him to be even more extremely conservative in his decisions with their over-the-top attacks on him, and attempting to characterize him (the guy who until last week was a Democrat) as a right-wing nutjob.

Welcome to the grass roots right, Mr. Trump, and we are glad to have you with the rest of us right-wing nutjobs. The current leadership of the Republican party is extremely untrustworthy. Despite the animosity created in the primary, I predict that Cruz will become one of Trump's biggest champions on capital hill, and those who opposed Cruz and his supporters need to get over it, and welcome all of us aboard the Trump bandwagon. We are now fully behind Trump.

And McCain is probably the single worst Republican Senator in Washington. He's despicable in every way.

@54 I am told that this is how it plays with UFO and bug-eyed alien reports.

During one's first couple of years in some intelligence service, several reports of alien visitors/bug-eyed aliens/levitating metal hidden in Area 51 will cross your desk.

You are supposed to take a look at them and then put them in the Charley File - goofy, uncorroborated, good for a laugh, or if you are really dutiful and bored on a Friday afternoon and the real work is done, you maybe follow up on it then and see if there's any corroborating material. (Usually there's some glaring clue of fakeness like a Brit writing about the World Cup Soccer Championship).

If you take it as writ because you WANT TO BELIEVE! and you begin leaking it to UFO publications and talking about the incredible government coverup and look at all the stuff we've got! Then you spend the remainder of your two years playing with that and you get shuffled out of the Intelligence services.

And that's why there are dozens of people doing the UFO circuit who have 2 years experience working at an Intelligence desk.

I'm not meaning to be snide. Seriously.

I had sincere doubts about Trump's honesty, given his long association with the Clintons and the Democratic Party. And the "get over it" was not really about accepting me onto the bandwagon. I'm not important in the big scheme of things, and don't pretend to be.

It's more about those who supported Trump in the primary season getting over their distaste for Cruz. I think he will be a sincere, and ardent supporter of Trump. Yes, it took him a while to get over personal attacks on his family, but that should be forgiven. Cruz really is sincere in his desire to overturn the corruption in Washington, and as long as Trump continues to act against that corruption, I believe Cruz will be a huge ally for him on Capital Hill.

Some who trusted and supported Trump from the beginning still want to fight battles that they've already won. If a defeated Cruz (and his supporters like myself) can put the sting of loss behind us, and acknowledge that we now believe Trump is sincere, then the victors such as yourself and Trump should be willing to accept our enthusiastic support.

To wit: Cruz excoriated opponents of Jeff Sessions yesterday in the Senate, and is taking on full responsibility to support Trump's nominees. It's not disloyal to Trump to acknowledge the value of Cruz in his current role, even if you opposed him as a Presidential candidate.

Anonymous Napoleon 12pdr January 11, 2017 4:58 PM

@114: Oh, that's just a start.

Ways Trump can make life VERY hard on the Propaganda Press:

1. Pull broadcast licenses. In particular, require parity for TV - one Conservative network for each Liberal network. Since the current ratio is 0:4, three Liberal networks go off the air.

2. Parity in White House Press credentials - one Conservative from a given medium for each Liberal. No Conservative TV network means only one Liberal TV pool reporter. One Conservative cable TV network means only one pool Liberal cable TV reporter. And so on. This clears up a lot of openings, which can be filled in by outsiders. Maybe even let ordinary taxpayers ask questions!

3. Keep up the Twitter...and other ways to bypass the Propaganda Press. And, of course, never hesitate to call them out on their lies. Trump's biggest breakthrough was the realization that he WAS the story - and as such, the media needed him more than he needed them.

I lived in Arizona and actually met "McNasty" (his high school nickname) at a military function (dinner) in Scottsdale in the 1990's. He was very demure and could not give you a firm handshake, later I was told about his injuries. He has a lock on Arizona (I lived there for 10+ years). The old folks in the retirement communities vote for him. He took out one of his last opponents (JD Hayworth) with a lot of dirty tricks. Why he ran a "polite" campaign against Obama and lost which always puzzled me.

I believed all the hype and thought he was okay until about 10 years ago when I figured out what kind of person he was and I simply despise him.

I know folks from the AZ Guard - he has been on pain killers for so long he is in fact quite unstable. I also knew a stripper at a club in Scottsdale (Babes) who told me he came in periodically and she would dance for him (no harm no foul there, I am a guy too) but what is also noteworthy is his military career.

Yeah he got shot down and was a POW for like 5 years (his dad was PACOM Commander 4 Star) so he got favorable treatment while in the military. I think in flight training he crashed multiple aircraft (one in Corpus Christi, TX) and I heard that he caused a fire on an aircraft carrier in Vietnam:
------------------------------
McCain, when a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy was a Navy pilot (they call themselves aviators). July 29, 1967 while on the deck and in his plane on the carrier U.S.S. Forrestal he managed to screw up procedures (officially denied and covered up by him and the Navy and also even promoted on Wikipedia if you care to look–reason to follow). He did a smart ass punk attention getting trick by doing a “wet start” up of his jet.

When a pilot wants to be a wise ass or show off, this type of engine start creates a large startling flame and lots of surprise noise from the rear of a jet engine on start up–this was no accident. This and the large subsequent electrical surge and apparent (incorrect and against policy) weapon arming (by the pilot) caused the launching of a powerful Zuni rocket across the carrier’s deck hitting other parked planes (photo below) that were packing 1,000 high-explosive pound bombs. The subsequent massive explosions, fire and destruction went several decks below and nearly sunk this major 82,000 ton U.S. aircraft carrier.
This stunt and aftermath caused the death of 134 sailors and seriously injure (blow off arms legs, cause blindness and burns to another 161 sailors) and took the ship off the battle line for extensive repairs. Any other Navy pilot causing this type of death and destruction the Navy would have raped him and he would probably still be in the brig. Why not McCain? Well, first with many powerful connections this “little infraction” was covered up by the Navy (our most politically involved/connected service by the way).

You see his grandfather was a famous FOUR STAR Navy admiral and his dad was at the time of the incident was a powerful Navy FOUR STAR admiral.
----------------------------
He needs to go away. His buddy Miss Lindsay Graham too (also a retired SC Air Guard Officer).

Ok now with awards he has gone into John Kerry world. I served to very high optempo combat deployments one to Afghanistan and one to Iraq. I received a Bronze Star medal. Look at what McCain got:
-------------------
McCain flew 23 bombing missions over North Vietnam, each averaging about half an hour, total time ten hours and thirty minutes. For these brief excursions the admiral’s son was awarded two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Bronze Stars, the Vietnamese Legion of Honor and three Purple Hearts. US Veteran Dispatch calculates our hero earned a medal an hour, which is pretty good going.” […]

@127-I didn't understand his polite campaign, nor Romney's. You can't chalk it up to the usual conservative pusillanimity. I want to say because black, and that was certainly part of it. So was the cloud of Bushian unpopularity hanging over the party.

But it was almost conspiratorial. Think of the biggest "tells" that their hearts weren't in it. McCain's was suspending the campaign; Romney's was tanking the second debate. I've gone over in my head why they stand out to me, and what similarities they share. The former was in aid of his bankster buddies, obviously. The second was weirder, but connected to not even pretending anymore that there's no uniparty on the issue of war. Which is of course close important to the banksters.

I don't want to read too much into that. Suffice to say there are many, many issues that cause the GOPe to lay down and die. One is the faintest idea that we're not all socialists now. Another is the ghost of a possibility that there might be some escape from perpetual war for perpetual peace.

No mention of the fact the pres & vice press are not bound by the conflict of interest rules reaffirmed during Bubba Clinton's presidency . Couldn't watch till the end.

Put simply, intel is never hard data. It is always a “best guess”, and history is littered with cases where it has been wrong.

McCain was in a plane on the Forrestal deck, fire started via mystery equipment failure, he left his plane. Commissioned officer McCain fled to the ready room, leaving enlisted to burn to death.

I would love to see his statement from the investigation. I suspect it is gone forever

She's on the 6PM slot on the Wheeling station around here. She and her carefully chosen "guest" were going on about how Trump was making enemies of the press ("all the wrong people") and no one would believe him in the future. They still have no idea yet what's happened to them. They think they still have the power to set the rules.

> Showergate is so unimaginative. I prever #GoldenGate or #TrumpShower

See, this just goes to show how ahead of their time the Beatles were; they even wrote a song about it:

Golden showers fill your eyes
Smiles await you when you "rise"...

We remember, Scott. Nice to see you finally admit you were wrong. We'll take all the allies we can get. The Cruz supporters? We'll just have to wait and see.

You have learned much, Grasshopper. But there is much yet to learn.

The prematurely-armed Zuni was launched from F-4B '110' due a power surge on start-up. McCain's A-4E '416' was on the receiving end.

The Scotterella How to Write Like a Woman Style Guide

Every post shall be a three paragraph essay of three sentences, just like I learned for the TAASP test and my english teacher praised me so much for.

Every sentence shall contain the words "I" or "me"; because really, all VDs posts are an excuse to talk about me and the way I feel.

There shall be at least nine comments, with the common thread through the comments being me. Everyone loves the way that subject makes me feel. I'm a giver.

Not a Navy guy, don't like McCain. But his battle station was likely the ready room and pilots are more valuable than their planes; let alone enlisted firemen.

McCain was given some report on Trump. Turned it over to the FBI. Whether the report was true of false, the FBI should have been made aware of it.

Rodents.

Maybe you're not trying very hard.

If you find yourself in possession of what looks as if it could be, as far as you can tell, a genuine Russian dossier containing information critical to the security of the nation, it makes sense that you would pass it on to the proper authorities.

But why did you end up with it in the first place? What does it say about you, that the people who created/acquired it chose you for their patsy -- even though it contains dirt on someone in your own party? Why funnel it to you, instead of to someone in the other party, or someone ostensibly neutral like a reporter?

Anonymous Lucas Temple January 11, 2017 10:53 PM

I thought Trump would pander a bit more to the media since he won, but I'm happy to see that he's going to treat them with the utter contempt they deserve.

A snippet from the NYT about how he handled Hallie Jackson of NBC:

“You know, the only one that cares about my tax returns are the reporters, O.K.?” the president-elect said. “They’re the only ones who ask.”

“You don’t think the American public is concerned about it?” Ms. Jackson asked.

“I don’t think so,” Mr. Trump replied, before laying down the political equivalent of a mike-drop: ”I won.”

Yea that was brutal. Finally a president willing to make these snakes eat their own venom - on live television.

Anonymous Susan January 11, 2017 10:56 PM

The whole dirty truth about McCain's naval career and the details about how he was involved in starting that deadly fire did used to be on Wiki.

But during his recent election campaign, somebody went in and cleaned it all up, every single little bit of his arrogance and incompetence is gone.

Bless Vox and his ilk for creating a better and more honest source for information.

Anonymous tublecane January 12, 2017 12:29 AM

@166-The best defense I can think up for McCain is that he was superfluous. Enough people knew anyway, and possibly the story would've broke the same way without him. I don't know if that's actually true, but anyway he was just one link in a chain of idiocy.

Of course, he did it against the interests of his party, at a point where it probably couldn't possibly help the party within the party. Getting rid of Trump, the short-term best case scenario for nevertrumpers of the GOPe (worst case scenario is what happened), would only solve their problem for one cycle at most.

Blogger Revelation Means Hope January 12, 2017 12:48 AM

Oh, that was so, so sweet.

I especially loved how he mildly mocked Hillary Clinton and her incredibly juvenile "reset button" with the Russians. Although I wish he had mocked that a little more, for perhaps 10 seconds longer. He might have been able to make one of the MSM reporters stroke out with emotional apoplexy by mocking their idol.

That's not a criticism, because this man is masterful. I am still utterly, completely amazed at his continually high performance.

This is what winning looks like, not like drugged out, AIDS infected Charlie Sheen's version.

"I don't get the complaints on what McCain did."

Really? Obviously, McCain should have forwarded the dossier to Trump and told them who gave it to them. And told the person who gave it to him to contact the FBI. It wasn't his job to help #Nevertrumpers to funnel their filth to the FBI.

Blogger rcocean January 12, 2017 11:11 AM

Because obviously, why did they give McCain the dossier? He wasn't the FBI or the CIA. They wanted him to get the dossier to the FBI so it could then be checked out and then leaked later as an official "Intelligence Document".
