This is not Christian leadership

Here is the thing. There are some jobs where you can make certain mistakes, apologize, and just keep doing them. Being a Christian pastor is not one of them:
According to the woman, Simmons came over to discuss starting a business and providing less fortunate kids with clothes and shoes,” but they ended up in bed together. The woman told police she and Simmons began “establishing a relationship” last October.

After the husband interrupted the tryst, he yelled "I'm gonna kill him" and ran to the master bedroom for his handgun; Simmons fled the apartment naked and hid behind a nearby fence.

The wife then called the police and her husband left with Simmons' clothes, wallet and car keys, which he threatened to drop off at the church. He also threatened to expose Simmons on Facebook.

The wife told police her husband never threatened her and she declined to press charges. Simmons also declined to press charges. State Attorney Jack Campbell, "citing the interests of all involved," decided against prosecution.

After phone negotiations with police, the husband arranged to return Simmons' belongings. The husband turned over the handgun to NAACP Tallahassee Branch President Dale Landry.

“My prayers to the families involved and the church and our community,“ said Landry. “May God guide all our hearts and minds as we move through this period."

Simmons, who has led the independent church since 2005, said he won't quit.

"What I want from God, I have already received - that’s his forgiveness, " Simmons said in his address. "What I am asking of our members is your prayers and your forgiveness.”

In response, the congregation stood and applauded for several minutes.
No, you don't forgive and applaud for a charlatan like this. If the man hasn't resigned, he clearly hasn't repented. One of the primary banes of the modern Churchian pseudo-church is easy, repentance-free, consequence-free forgiveness.

I would not hesitate to leave a church that hesitated to fire a pastor guilty of adultery. There is virtually no chance that this guy isn't going to do the same damn thing again at the earliest opportunity. He's obviously a con artist; I particularly enjoyed the lame cover story of "providing less fortunate kids with clothes and shoes".

Nobody is perfect. But nobody has to be a leader either. And if you can't keep yourself off the women in the congregation, then you can't be a Christian leader. Period.

"Contrition is “the true terror of conscience, which feels that God is angry with sin and grieves that it has sinned. This contrition takes place when sins are condemned by God’s Word.” Contrition is an interior condition, a fear and terror in the conscience that feels God’s wrath against sin. To give a scriptural example, Melanchthon quotes Psalm 38:4, 8: “For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart.”"

Clearly the kind of shyster in the topic feels zero amounts of contrition for what he's done.

And if you feel no contrition for the sin you've done, then it's clear that your conscience and faith is dead.

A charlatan indeed.

Growing up as an evangelical Protestant, this was a major stumbling block for me, because the only standard I applied to my self was my own opinion of what the Bible meant, or some pastor's opinion, until I didn't agree with him.

The guy is a sociopath. I would suspect the reason his flock hasn't abandoned him is because they must share his "values" and he is only taking the lead by externalizing those values.

At least the husband has some pretty good documented evidence of the affair and shouldn't have a problem in a clean break from his wife if he so chooses.

I have left churches for this exact reason. One of the reasons why I love my church now is because the pastor absolutely HAMMERS on authentic repentance. Recently our music director and his wife separated (reasons unknown to me) and the music director was stripped of ALL his leadership positions within the church that day.

In 2011, we learned that our pastor was having an affair with the secretary. We fired both of them promptly. There was no hesitation. His (now ex) wife, who made good-faith efforts to work things out but only divorced after it was clear that he would not break off the affair, remains a member. We did, at that point, excommunicate both the former pastor and the former secretary.

I have no use for church "leaders" who fool around. They not only should be fired, they are permanently disqualified from such an office, as they can no longer count themselves "above reproach".

Any "church" that subsequently calls such a pastor, has no regard for Scripture.

About a decade ago, the church I grew up in hired a preacher that lied on his resume. Said he had certain degrees and qualifications that he didn't actually have. It came out a few years after he was hired and there was a big uproar over it. He issued a non-apology that said it didn't matter, God had "called" him. Despite the heated division he caused between what had once been a tight knit congregation, he refused to resign and had the support of half the elders. The other elders resigned and most of the long time members left the church they had planted 20 years before.

It's no surprise that that church is now dying. If your focus is on yourself and what you want, you are not fit to lead singing, much less lead an entire congregation.

But he when to my aunt's house when my uncle wasn't home. Well, my uncle came home, and Pastor Simmons' (coincidence?) hand was up her shirt. Not only did he resign, but my dad and a few other deacons took him over the levee and tuned him up. When they came back, his hair was all messed up and his shirt was ripped.

it's not a color issue, it's "Women Love Power" issue. these type of 'pastors' notice that women love social status, choose church leadership as an easy, low competition way to worm their way in.

THIS is where color is relevant.

a White pastor pulls this shit at a White church and he's getting booted out the door. ( although the congregation is clearly not a good judge of character or they would have never chosen him in the first place )

IF he's lucky they'll allow him to resign suddenly because he "feels that the Lord has new plans for his life and ministry".

although, that just further implicates the church in his crime and enables him to continue his practices wherever he goes next.

a Black congregation applauds him because they're aware that all he's doing is following in the footsteps of MLK jr.

My mother's church recently had a financial scandal. It came out when people kept complaiing on the lack of transparancey etc. The pastor did step down. But he built that place up from scratch 38 years ago. His house is a few blocks away and is worth $440,000 with an in-ground pool.

Some would make an argument for that though

Blogger Orville January 31, 2017 3:18 PM

While I have been a member of a church with this same problem, a black acquaintance once told me this was fairly common in black churches among the pastors and deacons. He went on a house visit with a deacon who proceeded to move on the woman of the house and offered him a slice of pie too. The social-sexual dynamics of a black church make this obvious, though white churchians are also approaching that same dynamic with cuck-males around a predator-pastor.

My church as a youth was built into one of the first mega-churches of note (Prestonwood Baptist, Dallas, TX) by Rev. Billy Weber. Billy was extraordinarily charismatic, and a dynamo. He would go down in flames in a shocking sex scandal as a serial philanderer who abused his trusted position, and had been from the very beginning.

He did resign, under pressure, but it caused a schism and real problems in the church body. But Prestonwood thrived under new leadership and kept growing - Billy's name is probably completely unknown to any but the old-timers. Prestonwood's got two huge campi in Plano, TX now. The church Billy founded after he was driven out is a quite modest and small affair in comparison. Billy died of brain cancer a few years after founding it, too. Funny how that works out.

In my personal experience, white Churchianity's main failings are feminism and pathological altruism, while black Churchianity's failings are literally confusing Jesus Christ with Santa Claus. I've literally seen supposedly devout black women join hands with family members to pray outside the courtroom for Jesus to deliver a not guilty verdict for cousin Pookie in the murder of a rival gang member.

For most black Christians, prayer is just asking Santa Jesus for stuff you want, instead of asking for forgiveness, the strength to endure your trials and giving thanks for the blessings in your life.

uh, you can read upthread several examples of exactly that happening.

usually, in a White church, the pastor still gets driven out.

however, if you find out that the pastor is like this you need to be asking yourself serious questions anyways.

like, why are YOU so screwed up that you participated in this Church ( for however long ) and never noticed any doctrinal or propriety issues? there is practically NEVER an instance where such a pastor is going to be doctrinally sound.

you might give yourself a pass for not recognizing the signs BEFORE the pastor was found out. but if you can't come up with ANY problematic behaviors *after you know*?

Blogger Latigo3 January 31, 2017 4:20 PM

This is probably not the first time that this happened. Guys that are this bold have a history of this type of behavior.
As a pastor, when I am counseling, the door is always open and my wife can walk in anytime she wants. If it is with a woman, I make sure my wife is in her office (which adjoins mine) and the door stays open. I always let her know when I will be counseling and if I feel something odd about the woman then I make sure my wife is in there. We are all subject to being tempted, none of us is above it. Ministers who do not take precautions, are fools and are probably actually looking for an opportunity. The same applies to texting or phone calls, my wife is next to me. Any church or organization that allows a pastor to re-assume his position after committing adultery, is asking for problems. I would not be part of a church or organization that allows it. As a pastor I look at attributes that Paul lists in I Timothy 3:1-7 as the minimum that a pastor must have in his life. Reading that scripture humbles me.

The social-sexual dynamics of a black church make this obvious, though white churchians are also approaching that same dynamic with cuck-males around a predator-pastor.

Judging from my admittedly somewhat limited acquaintance with Churchian ministers and similar supposedly-Catholic Churchian priests nowadays, it would appear the whole profession is collapsing into a complete Gamma/Omega/Lambda goo.

But sure, you might run into white "predator pastors" (at least, who go after adult women), but they'll most likely be found in hard-line conservative Protestant or Mormon offshoots.

Blogger Scott January 31, 2017 4:21 PM

Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of fulla respect. 5(If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.
- 1 Timothy 3:1-7

This guy wants some ecclesiastical white out. Doesn't work that way when you're a leader in a Christian church. If he actually believed in what the Bible says, he would quit.

Anonymous Maj January 31, 2017 4:29 PM

Look, you can't expect black congregations to adhere to white norms of fidelity. DNA is DNA. For evolutionary reasons, they just don't have the same biological drives for lifelong pair bonding that whites do, and that's reflected in their behavior.

My father played by the same rules. The door to his study was always open and my mother was in and out with tea and cookies when he counseled. Every sensible elder or pastor I know plays it the same way.

I only do counseling in a glassed in room, open to the secretary and other staff when with a woman, and I never do evening sessions, or go to their house when they are alone. After church on Sundays, I usually spend 1-2 hours in my office planning the next week before going home. Had a knock outside of our office doors that turned into pounding.

When I went to see who it was, it was a woman who had stayed after church (she stated she felt dizzy and fell asleep in the youth room), and that she had to meet with me immediately. I refused, said I'd be glad to set up an appointment as early as the next morning, and asked if I could call anybody for her. She began raising her voice and throwing a tantrum when I picked up the phone and stated I'd be glad to call 911 if this was an emergency. She stormed out, and began grumbling to anybody who would listen about me "not being there for her." Thankfully...after a few months she drifted away, and I happily stood on the waterside and waved goodbye.

One can never be too vigilant.

In the Catholic Church, when it comes to the attention of the Bishop, first he sighs in relief that it's an adult woman, and then orders the priest to break it off, and keep it out of the congregation.

Which is not unreasonable. Celibacy is a hard discipline, some women stalk priests, and people sin.

If it goes public, he's sent off somewhere else. If he can't keep it in his pants, or won't break it off, he's disposed of, quietly if possible.

Epic Beta Churchian Fail; This was about a decade ago, a white male pastor in his 50's at a very churchy churchian mega church plagiarized a sermon word for word, anecdote for anecdote, prop for prop. The place went nuts, comments were made like "man that guy can preach", etc etc. So did he plagiarize Spurgeon or Moody? Nope, it was Rob Bell!!!! Now that's gay!

Long story short, the pastor had been pilfering sermons & entire series for some time off the internet, staff knew about it, no resignations or apologies. Some left but most stayed. a very comfortable place with a coffee shop in the foyer because that's more important than integrity.

Anonymous DissidentRight January 31, 2017 4:45 PM

Blogger JDC January 31, 2017 4:51 PM

it would appear the whole profession is collapsing into a complete Gamma/Omega/Lambda goo.

I agree it is heading that way. I can't put my finger on the exact cause, but I suspect it has to do with the ever diminishing fulfillment the vocation brings, the less respect the office of pastor holds amongst people today, the less relevant the church has become to many, and the financial difficulty churches have of supporting a full time pastor. I won't say pastors are under more pressure than other professions, but the pressures are unique, and many are crumbling under the weight.

You work for 250-2000 people who bring different expectations to your door (and yes, properly understood the pastor serves the congregation, not the other way around). You need to be an administrator, treasurer, educator, chaplain, preacher, snazzy dresser, musician, great with the youth, great with the homebound, great with kittens and puppies, and look like you are enjoying yourself all the time.

At LCMS seminaries today, seminarians are instructed to plan to work a second job for your first call, which comes as quite a shock to many incoming students. Median salaries nationally are around 40,000k (full-time), and the average student loan debt is around 35-50,000. Most churches are dealing with lower offerings and higher costs.

I have also seen pastors refuse to change with the times. For example, our church was going through some financial difficulties two years ago, severe enough where we were looking into eliminating a staff position. I did some investigating, and developed a sub-contract agreement with a local nursing home/hospice care provider to provide services. They pay our church a monthly stipend, and I and our youth pastor provide chaplain and hospice services.

If you value your pastor and your congregation the best thing you can do for him is to pray for him regularly, tell him you are doing so, and let him know you have his back.

The problem with american churches and pulpits is that they are filled with unbelievers. Just as with the synagogues of Jesus' time. There is no external, cultural, or political solution to the fact that men who are dead in their sins act like it. What we can do is preach the truth and, like the apostles, be heeded or beheaded. Folks will either be converted or the preaching they ignored will stand against their account at the last day.

Well I guess this is a good time for my first comment.

This story is so relevant. When I first moved to Colorado Springs (2006) my family was looking for a church. It was easy to avoid New Life because they were on the spotlight for the Ted Haggard incident. If you never heard, sex with a male prostitute, chrystal meth, flirting with male congregation members.

Now hear I am, just last month buying a new car, the car salesman tells me she goes to X church which is being lead by Ted Haggard. "Yes that Ted Haggard. He's a changed man!"

How ridiculous. From founder of a mega church making hundreds of thousands a year, to sexual deviant, now back to forming another congregation. How foolish can these new age false Christians be.

@34: never jump to conclusions. The pastor may well have been dipping deeply into the offerings. But maybe not. A friend of mine, a pastor in a small rural church drove a new Land Rover. His wife drove a new BMW. Both vehicles had been gifts - the Land Rover from a friend of his, the Bimmer from his father. Anyone looking at the scenario without the background knowledge could easily have drawn incorrect conclusions.

Why would you merely threaten to expose an adulterous 'pastor'?

sadly, what's being taught in seminaries is that the highest goal for the pastorate is not to induces schism in a church.

i know a guy who was Asst Pastor at an independent Baptist church years ago. less than 3 months after he was accepted as Asst, the Pastor up and announces that "God has new plans for his life and ministry" and announced that he was moving 500 miles away.

congregation was completely surprised.

Asst Pastor took over head Pastor duties while the church initiated a search for a new pastor.

Asst Pastor was well liked by all the youth groups and the only 'complaint' that was ever voiced about him was that, technically, the church considered choir direction to be a responsibility of the AP ... and he didn't even know how to read music, much less direct music.

after the better part of a year, while the Asst earned his Asst payroll, the church selected a new Pastor.

less than a year after that, the new lead Pastor had forced the Asst out.

that was the last pastoring job the Asst ever held.

the lead Pastor eventually was forced out of the church himself ( i'm not actually sure why ). after he left, he got involved in fencing computer equipment that his wife had stolen from the local library ( she had wormed her way into being the Head Librarian ), so there's no telling what he actually got caught doing in the church.

i talked to the former Asst a couple of years ago. turns out that one of the Deacons had found out that first Pastor who left suddenly was fucking one of the women in the church.

and they let him leave, quietly.

then they selected a replacement who was, at minimum, at thief and a liar.

and the Asst never put up a fight when he was forced out. because a 3rd party pastor told him that trying to stay could schism the church ... AND WE CAN'T HAVE THAT.

former Asst is a graduate of Bob Jones.

the church was selected by my mother. who at the time, was ( still is, technically, even though she has remarried. in that 'church' ) living in rebellion, more than a thousand miles away from her husband.

Your pull quote from the article didn't mention race, but I suspected early on. As soon as I got to the closing line where the congregation cheered the adulterer I knew the congregation, the adulterer, the adulteress, and their victim were all black. The black man and woman's obsession with sex will forever be their downfall.

I read once in a publication I trusted but have never bothered to double-check, that the Catholic Church in Africa quietly allows priests to marry as the only means of keeping the rampant fornicating and adultery in check. I have no idea how well it works but I'm guessing not well.

C.T. Studd, an amazing British missionary to China, and then at the age of 60, to Congo, after more than twelve years of seemingly fruitful service, was nearly in despair over the rampant sexual sin among his more than 12,000 church-going converts. And before you accuse him of preaching greasy grace, Studd was an uncompromising proponent of what, among the British at the turn of the 20th century, qualified as their "holiness movement".

I don't know if it's the result of an r/K Selection Strategy or what, but one need only watch one week of Maury Povich and his DNA Dun Did Me In series to know that black women can screw one man after another and keep each one in the dark about the others until someone asks for a DNA test.

Once, while serving in the Air Force, I found a copy of "Players" in a bathroom stall in the barracks. I flipped through it, decided black women were NOT to my taste, and found a special "Letters" section. The section this month, however, was dedicated to all the letters from older black men telling their stories of deflowering little black girls, some as young as 10, 11, or 12! And there were NEVER any consequences!

Now I have no idea if ANY of those stories were true, but the fact that THAT was considered appropriate reading material in a "Mens Magazine" still astounds me.

Anonymous Hoss January 31, 2017 11:22 PM

I used to work down in the ghetto. I was always amazed that the "pastors" would always be driving a brand new Cadillac while dressed in impeccable suits while they're parishioners would give their last nickel to the church when they didn't have a pot to piss in. I just marked it up as being no different than the bullshit the left pulls: decrying capitalism as the make money off of their shtick hand-over-fist; how the greenies tell us the world's going to die from certain activities that they themselves engage in to the nth degree; and so on... it's amazing what you can turn into a racket.

I read somewhere that during the Hurricane Katrina debacle in New Orleans, a group of blacks formed a prayer circle to pray and then broke off to join the looting. Black police also joined in frenzy.

Blacks are the only people on the face of the Earth with their hands stuck out in perpetual expectation of something for nothing: rampant crime, welfare, corruption, prayer for Leroy to beat the murder charge, whatever. That's one of the reasons they vote overwhelmingly for the Democrats. The official narrative is that their problems and shortcomings are all someone else's fault.

Blogger liberranter February 01, 2017 12:09 AM

What else would we expect from the "pastor" of a Dindu "church?" I don't doubt for a second that this sort of thing happens dozens of times every day in such organizations. The only difference here is that the Dindu charlatan was arrogant and careless and got his ass CAUGHT. Even then, he's none the worse for wear for his misadventure.

"What I want from God, I have already received - that’s his forgiveness, " Simmons said in his address. "What I am asking of our members is your prayers and your forgiveness.”

OF COURSE his congregation will forgive him, especially the married women (what very few there probably are), all of whom are lining up fighting each other to be the "pastor's" next conquest.

Simmons, who has led the independent church since 2005, said he won't quit.

Of course not. He'd have to get a JOB if he did, something that he is both incapable of and unable to conceive the very notion of.

In response, the congregation stood and applauded for several minutes.

Again, OF COURSE. Dindus gonna dindu, and what "Pastor" Simmons did was the churchianegro version of "laying hands on to heal."

Dindus can ape Christianity, like they can ape many traits of humanity.

But they can't actually be one.

The idea of forgiveness of sins is one of the least appealing aspects of Xianity. Specifically, although not in this case, the idea that your G-d can pardon you from egregious sins committed against those not of your faith, let you into paradise and send them to hell, even if they're better people.

The doctrine of karma is much more K-selected. The universe ultimately does unto you what you have done unto others, irrespective of what cosmic zombie you imagine you have a "personal relationship" with, or what magic incantations you mutter to a Jew on a stick.

The seed of this man's madness lies dormant in all Xians.

Reminds me of a local pastor here in the Bible Belt(southern WVa). A preacher's wife who slept with a guest preacher went on to marry the man after divorcing her husband.
The two were shunned from the community but ended up starting their own little church in another small town. I should know bcz I pretty much built it for them and my parents are faithful attendees.

They are forgiven in the small congregation's eyes. They both paid their dues. But the main thing is, the adultering preacher gets in the spirit now when he preaches. Before he and his new wife repented, he preached in the flesh and his listeners knew it. Because born again Christians know.
That's the only way this guy in the article can be forgiven imho: marry the woman he slept with and pay his dues. Live his exile, do his time, repent, and pray.
It could happen, right?
