Writing was juvenile, thoughts were trite, just a fraudulent trap to quench haters' desire to feed.

I find it incredible when people try to defend these fake reviews and suggest that they might be genuine. "How can you be sure they're not real," they demand. Because it's absolutely obvious when someone hasn't bought the book, hasn't read the book, relies entirely upon generic criticisms, uses emotionally charged language, posts several reviews on the same day, and hasn't convincingly reviewed anything else.

I was a professional reviewer. I can spot a fake review as easily as a professional art restorer can spot a painted forgery. There are literally dozens of potential tells. Of course, it's even more obvious when they make their political motivations unmistakable.

This literally smelled like someone got a bunch of flowers to try and hide a used feminine cleansing product. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

I'd rather rid the country of ALL of the people who are prejudice against other legal American ethnic/religious groups, women, and gays. As a white male, I fully expect there would be many, many white males in that group that should be exiled. Great idea!
- dab2525

Now, if you want to try to convince yourself that this individual actually read two of my books after buying Ivanka Trump's perfume, feel free to do so. But you're an idiot.

This is why posting reviews on places like Amazon is important. The SJWs engage in this manipulative vandalism in order to try to prevent people from supporting those they perceive as the enemy by establishing a false narrative about them. There is a reason that you don't see fake reviews like this littering the listings of of every book by SJWs and moderates; they pose zero danger to the SJW Narrative. What I'd ideally like to see is for 10 positive reviews to be posted by verified purchasers for every attack single review that appears on a Castalia House listing.  I suspect that would serve as sufficient disincentive to engage in the activity.

As the God-Emperor says, now is the time to act.

UPDATE: Three hours and 27 minutes to locate and profile David Arthur Burcher? VFM, your sloth makes your Dark Lord sad. I will grant that it is Saturday and I did post before most of you were awake, but this is simply not the extreme performance I expect out of my most rabid and loyal servitors!

No flesh or blood with your SJW bones tonight. Let that be a lesson to you.

UPDATE: I sent Mr. Burcher the following email:

I was very sorry to learn that you were so disappointed with two of my books that you recently reviewed. As Castalia House always hopes to satisfy our customers, I would be pleased to offer you two alternative Castalia House ebooks that you might find more to your taste. We have a number of excellent authors from whom to choose.

Our catalog is below. If you will let me know which two books are of interest to you, I will be happy to send you the epubs.

With regards,

Nah, Vox must have triggered him. In the last week he slams two of Vox's books, a Holocaust (denial?) book, and Ivanka's perfume. His last review before that was in July 2015.

A thought. Perhaps a mini manual on how to do what the VFM do when they, or you smoke out people like this. I will pay just for the knowledge; though, would be temped to try it a few times.

Problem here is that you're poking the sleeping bear every time that you try to brigade you readers into downvoting these reviews. Consider, if Amazon is as converged as most giants are, they'd unlist Castalia releases from their site regardless of sales if you gave them minimally sufficient course for that. And this counts as a case of outside manipulation of user reviews, something they frown upon on the best of days.
So, as you are still dealing with them, and as you will continue to do so in foreseeable future as Amazon alternative would be too gigantic and risky a project for pretty much anyone, I'd advise against giving them any ammo that can be sued against you.

One can always count on the sage advice of the moderate to do nothing on the basis of fear.

The review is fake. Amazon specifically bans fake reviews. It is not an "outside manipulation of a user review" for the obvious reason that it is not a review.

He's either never been with a woman (most likely) or the women he's been with were as appetizing as yesterday's fish sticks.

Blogger Cail Corishev February 25, 2017 8:28 AM

If that's his Twitter account, this is he on Reddit. Lots of Sixers stuff, plus all the same braindead liberalism. Even a post where he encourages a woman with long hair to cut it off for kids with cancer. The most important thing there might be some posts about local issues in Raleigh, NC, like sobriety checkpoints, that would probably only interest someone who lives there.

His reddit posts show that he hates women, using terms like "skaggy wenches standing in the way with their floppy bits hanging ou," and joking about a "bitch getting raped." He also mentions having a daughter.

Blogger Salt February 25, 2017 8:36 AM

Varies by state. I'm used to seeing a 5 minute hearing where defendant can explain why they should be found not guilty of contempt. Clearly, that's not the law here. The dropping of the 92 days is very common too. Judge is trying to make a point so court decorum shapes up very quickly.

He also loves Grisham, except for the one he gave one star review to.

It was really rather amusing to give the previous gentleman a call at his office and ask him what it was that he didn't like about the book that he didn't read. I don't think "shell-shocked" would be too strong a word to describe his reaction.

I'd have paid money to have seen his face when he answered that call. Did he refuse to allow recording? Such people might welcome a recording so their true brilliance would be on display for everyone to witness.

An amusing prank call would be posing as an Amazon rep to determine how many falsehoods they would admit and prompt them to revise their fake review with an admission of guilt and an apology.

Blogger pyrrhus February 25, 2017 9:17 AM

"Fake" 1 star reviews (is there any other kind?) are all over Amazon on any works whose substance can arouse the feeble ire of SJWs. Even people like Taleb get some of these reviews. It is well known that authors need a decent quantity of legitimate reviews with 4 or 5 stars, even if they are just a couple of lines, but I doubt that most readers pay any attention to these 1 star reviews.

Welcome to the info war. Its called using their own tactics against them.

I've found this site somewhat handy for amazon reviews: http://fakespot.com/

UPDATE: I sent Mr. Burcher the following email:

I was very sorry to learn that you were so disappointed with two of my books that you recently reviewed. As Castalia House always hopes to satisfy our customers, I would be pleased to offer you two alternative Castalia House ebooks that you might find more to your taste. We have a number of excellent authors from whom to choose.

Our catalog is below. If you will let me know which two books are of interest to you, I will be happy to send you the epubs.

With regards,

Vox Day

Very generous of the Dark Lord. I was so looking forward to hearing him answer your phone call.

Mentions 2 daughters again and "keep my local channels in Raleigh".

Was born in either 1966 or 1967. (In reference to a discussion about 1966, during Dec 2015.) Maybe January 1967 Birthday?

Reading threads like this is only one of the many reasons why I love this site. Thanks for the lulz!

3 and a half hours to find all that out? The Dark Lord is is letting the quality of his minions slip. For shame.

VFM, report to the kitten room where a pile of kittens will claw you painfully in their clumsy attempts to play. You may not leave the room until you've lost half of your blood (based on previous experience, I'd give you 15 minutes tops).

I'd rather rid the country of ALL of the people who are prejudice against other legal American ethnic/religious groups, women, and gays. As a white male, I fully expect there would be many, many white males in that group that should be exiled.

And even after getting rid of 90% of the competition, this specimen still won't score. Sad! (Or maybe not, wouldn't want the gene pool to be accidentally polluted.)

The importance of genuine reviews was the impetus behind the coming "Three for Three" review bomb. If you eant to push back against this and support your favorite indy author, here's the plan:

On March 3 (3/3) post three reviews of just three sentences. Make them accurate. Make them appropriate. Make them informative.

It should only take a few minutes, and the good you do will far outweigh the effort. Of course you can do more reviews or longer reviews if you so desire. The point is to just get out there and do it. Once you start, it becomes second nature.

Vox's reply was a class act, awesome, very professional.

It is true; artists can tell the difference from a impression, the original to the remake just as we can tell the difference from the fake dollar to the real dollar.

"Fake" 1 star reviews (is there any other kind?)

I actually gave a book a 1 star review after reading a hundred or so pages - once. It's got to be absolutely awful to get a legit 1 star review :P

Milo really seems to trigger a lot of them, and they try to take it out on anyone not aligned with them.  If you just laugh at them they don't seem to know what to do.  Then again, it might be hard to do anything while trying to scrape their brains off the walls and ceiling.  Ah, splodey heads are so much fun.

Anonymous El Rojo February 25, 2017 2:16 PM

Why doesn't amazon just limit the ability to review a product to only those who bought it on amazon.

They track your purchase history - one would think that it would be straightforward to tie that in with the ability to make a review, similar to how ebay asks for a review after purchase?

At least that way if someone posts a scathing diatribe they at least had to pay for the privilege.

Blogger Skyler the Weird February 25, 2017 2:17 PM

I once gave a truly awful book about a couple on Cyprus during the U.K. peace mission in the 50's a one star review. I complained about the meandering plot and things the characters did no real people would do. The author had them remove it.

People have complained many times about the fake 5 star reviews of Rape Rape Martin last two Song of Fire and Ice books but Amazon let them stay on there.

Blogger Cail Corishev February 25, 2017 2:54 PM

Why doesn't amazon just limit the ability to review a product to only those who bought it on amazon.

Because they get far more reviews by allowing anyone to post them.

I won't even read a second book by an author I didn't like, even though the library has it.  "Earth Unaware"... ugh.  I'm done with the Ender's Game franchise.  It's total SJ-converged crap now.  I will not touch anything by Card and a co-author either.

They do make a point to highlight those reviewers who have made a "verified purchase." (Is that the terminology?)

Blogger Francis Parker Yockey February 25, 2017 7:37 PM

Nice job. Sometimes fake reviews aren't all bad, though. What about reviews that are of higher literary quality than the original work? In particular, what comes to mind is the only Amazon review that I've ever seen that garnered >10,000 upvotes. It was eventually deleted, but lives on in various places on the interwebz.

In the 70's and 80's I was a field auditor with a state employment security agency collecting unemployment taxes and auditing records. To locate employers trying to escape from their liability was sometimes quite a task. We would utilize FOIA requests at post offices, deed books, property tax records, dept of safety motor vehicle records, utility records, interview business and residential neighbors, and of course phone records. I left the field in 1993 before things were so inter connected via the internet. Retired in 2004.

I am flabbergasted by what just went on.

Out of sheer curiosity could someone provide me an outline of your investigating techniques? For instance, went to source A, B, C and sought this particular piece of information or went down this particular trail when this trail proved fruitless. I would imagine our hapless reviewer is now looking out for drones.

Anonymous VFM #6306 February 25, 2017 9:14 PM

No.

Blogger Skyler the Weird February 25, 2017 9:20 PM

Back before the Internet you could look up a Cole's City Directory in the library and do a name search of someone to find address and phone or do an address search to see who lived there.

Anonymous Phantasmic February 25, 2017 9:32 PM

@103

It's a combination of sifting through the information he had volunteered on his known social media (Twitter and Reddit) and applying some common sense to figure out what it told us about him.

Education was easy since he was quite fond of telling people he went to Clemson. Likewise he made no secret of what state he lived in and had tweeted the region too. He had also said in a number of reddit posts his city and even mentioned what part of the city.

With just a first name, school and current location, Clemson alumni records narrowed the list down to a handful of people. It was narrowed down further by his mentions of his line of work in IT.

With only a couple of names to search records on, it was a simple task to see whose information matched up with what other information was known.

He put out all the information needed to find him himself, if anyone had reason to look. So just remember, no matter how anonymous you think you are, it's easily undermined if you're broadcasting your personal details.

Anonymous Kolya February 25, 2017 10:02 PM

Six degrees of separation. If I wanted to visit the Dark Lord in person, I probably could, but I am content to worship from afar. It would be too expensive, for one thing. Plus I took the Blood Oath.

That is some serious and painful shit right there.

Blogger VD February 26, 2017 2:09 AM

It would be too expensive, for one thing.

And you'd end up eaten by Ridgebacks, for the other.

Blogger Kona Commuter February 26, 2017 4:02 AM

@ VD #109 - I love Ridgebacks.

My parents had one when I was a young boy. It was to boisterous for me so they gave him to friends who had a farm. He was so strong he would literally drag his kennel around the farm when they chained him to his kennel when they first got him. He had a foible where he would let males into our yard but not leave without a female escorting him. LOL

Sorry that doesn't add anything to the thread.

Blogger Kona Commuter February 26, 2017 4:09 AM

Late to the party but I love your work guys.

Years ago I was taken in by a phone scam. You'd get a missed call on your mobile and of course you'd ring it back (at your expense --- back when mobile calls were expensive and not free like they are now) You'd then get a message saying you'd won a prize and you had to call a premium number ($5 a minute) to claim it.

I was so angered by it I chased the culprits down and got the addresses and phone numbers of the two people whom were responsible and their businesses (the scam was a side hustle). Found out a stack of personal information as well. Of course I shared that info with forums where people were bitching about being scammed. I read the thread later and someone said the wife of one of the scammers was crying because they were drawing so much heat.

It took 3/4 of a day for me, a blue collar worker, to chase down the information pre farcebook. People have a larger online footprint now. I see rioters getting doxed (good) in no time at all, and from seemingly little to go on.

Happened to me with a ridgeback as well - seems to be genetic, not just a foible :)
