Who we are not

Ross Douthat offers an older historical fiction in exchange for a newer, more obviously false one:
The problem with this rhetorical line is that it implicitly undercuts itself. If close to half of America voted for Republicans in the Obama years and support Trump today, then clearly something besides the pieties of cosmopolitan liberalism is very much a part of who we are.

This self-undermining flaw makes the trope a useful way to grasp the dilemmas facing Trump’s opponents. In seeking to reject Trump’s chauvinist vision, they end up excluding too much of what a unifying counternarrative would require.

The exclusion happens by omission, in the course of telling a story about America that’s powerful but incomplete. In this narrative, which has surged to the fore in response to Trump’s refugee and visa policies, we are a propositional nation bound together by ideas rather than any specific cultural traditions — a nation of immigrants drawn to Ellis Island, a nation of minorities claiming rights too long denied, a universal nation destined to welcome foreigners and defend liberty abroad.
This is obvious nonsense, as Douthat observes.
Given this story’s premises, saying that’s not who we are is a way of saying that all more particularist understandings of Americanism, all non-universalist forms of patriotic memory, need to be transcended. Thus our national religion isn’t anything specific, but we know it’s not-Protestant and not-Judeo-Christian. Our national culture is not-Anglo-Saxon, not-European; the prototypical American is not-white, not-male, not-heterosexual. We don’t know what the American future is, but we know it’s not-the-past.

But the real American past was particularist as well as universalist. Our founders built a new order atop specifically European intellectual traditions. Our immigrants joined a settler culture, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant, that demanded assimilation to its norms. Our crisis of the house divided was a Christian civil war. Our great national drama was a westward expansion that conquered a native population rather than coexisting with it.

Then for a variety of reasons — a necessary reckoning with white supremacism, a new and diverse wave of immigration, the pull of a more globalist ethos, the waning of institutional religion — that mid-century story stopped making as much sense. In its place emerged a left-wing narrative that stands in judgment on the racist-misogynist-robber baron past, and a mainstream liberal narrative that has room for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Alexander Hamilton (as opposed to the slightly more Trumpish genuine article) and Emma Lazarus, but feels unsure about the rest.
Instead of presenting the truthful alternative, Douthat pushes the civic nationalist myth, complete with the 20th century "Judeo-Christian" lie, not once, not twice, but THREE times!
But meanwhile for a great many Americans the older narrative still feels like the real history. They still see themselves more as settlers than as immigrants, identifying with the Pilgrims and the Founders, with Lewis and Clark and Davy Crockett and Laura Ingalls Wilder. They still embrace the Iliadic mythos that grew up around the Civil War, prefer the melting pot to multiculturalism, assume a Judeo-Christian civil religion rather the “spiritual but not religious” version.

Trump’s ascent is, in part, an attempt to restore their story to pre-eminence. It’s a restoration attempt that can’t succeed, because the country has changed too much, and because that national narrative required correction. The myth of the “Lost Cause” had to die, the reality of racial wrongs required more acknowledgment, the Judeo-Christian center had to make room for a larger plurality of faiths.

But so far we haven’t found a way to correct the story while honoring its full sweep — including all the white-male-Protestant-European protagonists to whom, for all their sins, we owe so much of our inheritance.
Notice that Douthat retreats to an older false narrative, the 20th century civic nationalist narrative, in preference to the 21st century multicultural narrative. But both narratives are entirely and absolutely false. Both narratives are fiction.

America is not, and never was, any more "Judeo-Christian" than Israel is "Hindu-Judaic" or Japan is "Islamo-Shinto". The melting pot is rhetoric that is every bit as false, and every bit as weaponized for the benefit of immigrants to the detriment of the native population, as the multiculturalist rhetoric.

While I agree with your take on it Vox, I think there is something to be said for incremental persuasion. Small steps are all we can ever expect from much of the Blue Pill right. A great many of the people in the 'center' simply cannot ever accept the truths of the alt universe, but in some respects we don't ever need them to. We just need them to be comfortable enough with the overarching principles so that they go about their business and let others set the course.

In the grand scheme, I think this piece you critique is actually is a positive step toward that end. And if the goal is a comparatively peaceful transition to a new kind of society, then arguments like this should be more welcomed than shunned.

You can (and maybe should) call it out of course. That's your role. But if the old right wants to write a few more pieces designed to calm the horses a little, I view that as a net positive for all of us.

Just my take.

While I agree with your overall point -- America's Founders and Framers were virtually all Englishmen and virtually all Protestants, and they created a nationalistic nation that required citizens to be White men of good character -- the Jews who tailored the Judeo-Christian myth do have some points on which to anchor their story.

It is true that some settlers who left Europe due to religious persecution identified deeply with plight of the Jews in the Old Testament, and some early colonies proposed adopting the law of the Jews as set forth in the OT. And, it cannot be disputed that Christianity has embraced the OT as part of its biblical canon, that Jesus was a Jew, and that the religion began as a Jewish sect.

Thus, it is far more credible to talk about a Judeo-Christian America than, say, an Islamo-Shinto Japan.

This guy is a cuckold in kings clothing.

Douthat would rather set himself on fire than admit human biodiversity because that would offend his Master, zion.

The national review is about as nationalist as any other civic nationalist organisation. Ie. Not nationalist.

Nationalism is based on tribe, not laws/religion etc. In fact racial genetics pick the religion. Thats why whites adopted the high empathy chrisitianity invented by the jews in the middle east. The jews themselves mostly banished it and stomped it out.

Middle eastern tribes favour very harsh gods and codes i keeping with their malthusian bloodlust. Judaism is more barbaric than islam. Read the talmud douthat. Read the old testament.

The difference between old and new testament is night and day. Because its a curious example of judeo-christianity i.e. a schizophrenic internal condradiction.

It might be more apt to call it shinto buddhism as an analogy. But buddhism is clearly delineated along a number of canonical points.

Judaism is like islam on steroids. All people have to do is read jewish religious texts.

Then you see their rage and fervour for world dominaton for the locust people. If jews werent religious and 'atheist' today....then why does israel exist?!

Israels existence and their concern over it and its lebensraum demonstatrated they follow the precepts in their religious texts even more fervently than most sharia law muslims.

Irrelevant. Judaism is considerably more than the Old Testament. That is why many rabbis consider the concept of "Judeo-Christianity" to be anti-semitic. Moreover, you could claim that Saudi Arabia is "Judeo-Islamic" using much the same criteria.

It is a historically false and dishonest term of rhetoric.

Well, that part is true at least. The country will have to revert to a prior, better version if it is to survive, let alone prosper. That restore point is somewhere prior to 1965, and we'd better off going back a lot further than that.

I think there is something to be said for incremental persuasion.

There is, but that's not what Douthat is doing. He has no desire to shift anyone toward nationalism or the Alt-Right, incrementally or otherwise. He makes that clear when he changes directions with this line:

"It’s a restoration attempt that can’t succeed, because the country has changed too much"

His strategy is to make a show of sympathizing with working-class whites' feelings, show them some verbal respect, and then hope that'll be enough to soothe them so they'll start following cucks again -- or at least go back to not voting. "Hey, the things you care about are great -- but you can't have them anymore, so get used to it. But you're great, really!"

That's not incrementalism; that's just putting a new coat of paint on the same old jalopy and trying a new sales pitch that includes some flattery.

Whatever gripes you folks want to make about the white-ethnic wave of immigration roughly 1850-1920, those people BUILT things, and often suffered greatly by doing so. My ancestors built things like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Holland Tunnel, all you Jamestown punks did was shiver and starve (kidding).

But the difference is, the old wave of immigrants participated in America by helping to build it. The post-1965 crowd has simply come here to feed off what was already built.

@28, Fair enough. But this doesn't show any incremental persuasion on his part either; it only shows that he's awakened to the fact that working-class whites aren't falling for the old narrative anymore, and that continuing to ignore them would be a mistake. He shows no sign of being persuaded that our positions or goals are correct, and in fact simply declares them impossible, before doubling-down on the old multi-cult lies.

Again, this is a guy who told people to vote for Hillary because the devil we knew in her was better than the devil Trump was in Ross's nightmares. He wasn't a waffler or a weak ally; he went over to the enemy. They can have him.

His mistake is thinking we're trying to restore the country. We're not. We're trying to restore the nation to control of the country.

Or perhaps he's not mistaken about it at all, and is just trying to confuse us about the two. The country is geography and institutions. The nation is a people. The countries institutions declared open war on it's people eight years ago. As is usual for Americans, it took us a while to get our boots on, but here we are now. Judeo-Christian, as a term, has a sort of fluidity to it, which would explain a lot.

Our society is currently neck deep in fluid and national identity needs to be a solid foundation.

What's missing from the debate is this:

If Douthat and those like him thing alt-white/right principles are too extreme, then the onus is on him to demonstrate how our institutions can be reformed in a timely manner. With real, verifiable results.

I think the onus on the alt-white/right is in demonstrating how their state would be an extension of centuries-old traditions and institutions.

When people say "Judaeo-", even the good "conservative" orthodox Jews who reject abortion and LGBTQ stuff, they mean the Pharisees Christ called "Sons of the Devil" and "Brood of Vipers". But "Sons-of-the-Devil-Christian" doesn't play well.

Second, you CANNOT understand the Constitution without the Bible. The Revolution was not from the press and pamphlets as much as the "Black Robe Regiment" - the pastors preaching from the Bible.

And Wallbuilders.org can and has traced most of the discussion and talking points, even at the Constitutional Convention even secular as tracing from Bible verses. Everyone would not have to parse any words, they were echoing Exodus, Jeremiah, the Gospels, and Paul. The freedom of Conscience is still a pinnacle of Christendom.

That is why the left is having a fit over the First Lady starting the rally with The Lord's Prayer.

Just like a nonwhite often prefers to live in a white country, Jews and secularists did better under Christians (How well did they do in France during their revolution?).

To want the Constitution without the Biblical Christian context is to ignore what the authors thought and intended. Even the words when not twisted have little power.

If I have a problem with portions of the alt-white, it is that it takes Christ for granted, or even asserts we can have the same Western Civilization based on paganism. Greece and Rome were the best Paganism could do. It can be strong, but without wisdom - they execute their philosophers.

But the converse is that when I look at orthodox (in practice), faithful people who believe in Christ, I don't see much diversity. You have too many churchians in liberal areas, but "Liberation Theology" (the Pope) infects Hispanics, and most black churches are cucked even worse than the virtue signalling white feminist ones.

The Mormon missionaries need to go to Detroit, LA, Baltimore, and Boston, not to areas that have good evangelicals and Catholics. Converting a goat to a sheep is harder than poaching sheep.

What, no shame or guilt for their own tribal wars, expansion, and conquering of one another rather than coexisting, like you'd want them to Ross? And which, in terms of territorial encroachment on a much smaller scale, still happens today between reservations that border eachother? Not to mention those other cultural... tics, which still exist. And which presumably was why they were Christianized en masse as they were, not so much for the nicety of Judeo-Christ, but to (maybe with futility) breed out the more dyscivic and dangerous aspects from the next generation of potential neighbors to the pale face settlers.

I get a glimpse at them whenever Leftist Liberals talk about the America of the past.....the white, male, heterosexual, protestant, patriots of the past. They keep talking about them as if they were all wiped out in a great pandemic plague or died completely out fighting to the last on a mountain top redoubt.
They are not gone. They are more numerous today than they ever were. Every day of my existence I drive around the city and I see thousands of them, going about their business. They have not died out, they did not leave the planet and go elsewhere, they are still here and a very big part of what happens in this country.
A few months ago, they elected a new president. He could not elect himself. Americans did that.
