Wikipedia bans Daily Mail

Yet another reason to prefer Infogalactic to Wikipedia: the latter's heavily biased, increasingly inaccurate, ironically named "reliable source" standard:
Wikipedia editors have voted to ban the Daily Mail as a source for the website in all but exceptional circumstances after deeming the news group “generally unreliable”.

The move is highly unusual for the online encyclopaedia, which rarely puts in place a blanket ban on publications and which still allows links to sources such as Kremlin backed news organisation Russia Today, and Fox News, both of which have raised concern among editors.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia but does not control its editing processes, said in a statement that volunteer editors on English Wikipedia had discussed the reliability of the Mail since at least early 2015.

It said: “Based on the requests for comments section [on the reliable sources noticeboard], volunteer editors on English Wikipedia have come to a consensus that the Daily Mail is ‘generally unreliable and its use as a reference is to be generally prohibited, especially when other more reliable sources exist’.

“This means that the Daily Mail will generally not be referenced as a ‘reliable source’ on English Wikipedia, and volunteer editors are encouraged to change existing citations to the Daily Mail to another source deemed reliable by the community. This is consistent with how Wikipedia editors evaluate and use media outlets in general – with common sense and caution.”
Infogalactic has a vastly superior standard: truth. This sort of SJW thought-policing is why Infogalactic is eventually going to replace Wikipedia; it is only a matter of time. It's particularly ironic that this article originally appeared in The Guardian, which has got to be the least reliable source among newspapers that one can hope to find since the demise of the Soviet Union.

Speaking of Infogalactic, it is soon going to launch Infogalactic News, a dynamic Drudge-style page that will be actively curated and update twice per day. It will feature 36 permalinks to sites and commenters that are mostly not available at Drudge, including this one, so we hope you'll make it your primary news page. We need a few more news editors to round out the full week, so if you're VFM and you want a regular turn at the wheel, email me with your VFM # in the subject and whether you prefer 12 midnight to 12 noon or 12 noon to 12 midnight, both EST. Each editor will be responsible for keeping the page up-to-date for one 12-hour period per week.

On a tangential note, full dynamic auto-forking will be also operational within a few weeks. And if you haven't joined the Burn Unit yet, please consider doing so. We've been growing steadily, but once News and Forkbot go live, the traffic is going to explode, so we'll need the Burn Unit to grow accordingly.

There were attacks today in Australian media of the Daily Mail too. It was well executed, complete with an aggrieved small business owner(pizza shop). I was sus on it as I was listening to it on the radio. Makes sense now, the orders have gone out.

The reliable source rules on wikipedia are not logically sound.

What isn't an appeal to authority utilizes terms with subjective definitions which, when boiled down, mean these rules are:

"a source is reliable of it's MSM or if the 'unblockable' editors say it's reliable"

Blogger pyrrhus February 09, 2017 8:36 AM

Possible reason: the Daily Mail ran the article exposing the NOAA's fraudulent global warming study, complete with scientific whistle blower.

Anonymous Rocklea February 09, 2017 8:39 AM

Back in ya box Jimmy.
No this story was unrelated to that. An Asian delivery driver from a Chinese restaurant had appeared in court after allegedly touching a three year old on the genitals while dad was getting the money. Apparently the Daily Mail ran the story with a generic picture of a guy delivering pizza. There is a pizza shop on the same street two doors down. The owner of the pizza shop called into the radio station(Fairfax Media), to complain about the effect on his business and delivery driver. Now the call sounded genuine, and probably was. The best propaganda is the truth. Like I said, well executed. And it also adds subliminal persuasion on the pizza thing as well.

Blogger Cail Corishev February 09, 2017 8:39 AM

Yes, even before they were clearly biased, the rules made no sense. They're designed to ensure that the source most qualified to settle the truth of many subjects is barred from doing so.

Daily Mail has been running stories that debunk Lefist narrative for years. They're an actual news source, so of course, Wikipedia can't maintain the narrative if they're involved.

Blogger SteelPalm February 09, 2017 8:40 AM

@7

You might be correct.

As a professional scientist who has investigated the question at length, the best layman article I've found in a popular newspaper was in the Daily Mail, of all places. (I know, I was shocked at the time, too)

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2436710/Met-office-proof-global-warming-pause-climate-summit-confirms-global-temperature-stopped-rising.html

And Wikipedia, of all the Social Justice issues they push, are most heavily invested into the global warm...err, "climate change" scam.

No, they were designed to ensure that others could verify the sources.

If you post "Joe Blow told me he was born on Mars," third parties have no way to verify that. If you post "The Daily Mail reports that Joe Blow told them he was born on Mars," anyone else can can verify that.

The rules made sense. But, like any other gatekeeper, they became a target for SJWs who wanted to control the site. Which is why Wikipedia is doomed.

Either way, it's amusing to see the left attack the Daily Mail. Every time I go to their website, it seems like a paper for female celebrity gossip. Clearly Wikipedia is sexist to the core.

FWIW, this is the language that got me essentially banned:
Most of the women I knew who rose to upper management in the Fortune 500 were either childless or their kids were wrecks (not that women in management had a monopoly on this.) Maybe retiring to a large house full of cats is adequate compensation for being a childless Senior Vice President.

Those who put career first by all appearances rode the carousel (I won't link to what this really means out of decency) until their 30's and then tried to have the hubby-2kids-dog-whitepicketfence gig but ended up on Prozac. BIG TIME.

To each their own, but those who tell young women to "play the field," "climb the corporate ladder" and put off marriage and family until their mid-30's or later are full of it.

It is my dubious honour to work in media intelligence for a well-known PR firm. This entails reading all of the UK nationals every night. It doesn’t take a genius to see how papers frame stories with time-honoured not-so-subtle tricks. They’re all at it, but I have to say the Daily Mail routinely produces the most egregious examples - along with the Daily Express. The only surprise here is that Wikipedia hasn’t prescribed the Express also. I guess that’s because nobody except care home residents reads the Express, while the Mail is one of the world’s biggest online news sites.

All the UK nationals have their agendas, obviously. But reading the coverage of any given story in all the papers - as I do - the different approach by individual titles is plain to see. And the Mail and Express are definitely the most shameless in their distortions and omissions. That’s just a fact.

Sometimes, papers are forced to admit their mistakes, which is why the clarifications and corrections sections are always with checking - if for nothing than some comic relief. For example, for the 29/01 we can see the following admission from the Mail:

“A news story said about 250,000 people die in Britain each year from pulmonary embolism. In fact the figure, in 2012, was 2,300.”

Interestingly, the relevant article remains uncorrected. Any Wikipedian looking for data on pulmonary embolism deaths in the UK would be well advised to avoid the Mail, I’d say.

Judge Crypto-cuck needs to stay in Colorado with his SJW friends.

How do you propose to make that happen?

Bit coincidental that this all the sudden comes out 2 weeks after the nom? This is oppo research black knighting our side. Check that list again, call your Senator and the White house and tell them next time who you want.

Anonymous fop February 09, 2017 1:01 PM

How do you propose to make that happen?

By propogating memes like "Judge Crypto-Cuck".

Eventually the God-Emperor will take notice and come to his senses.

Blogger James Dixon February 09, 2017 1:05 PM

I should add that some are also going to Anglican Catholic churches: http://www.anglicancatholic.org/

@74 fop
This must be your first rodeo, because you do not understand how the Senate confirmation process works. Maybe you should learn something about Trump. You could watch older episodes of the Apprentice, or read Trump's books.

Then you could get busy doing something other than this whiny blubbering.

The recent Daily Mail article declaring global-warming/climate-change to be a hoax was, without doubt the reason for the Wikipedia move

Don't be an idiot. The God Emperor can withdraw the nomination anytime he wants to. And he should.

Your friendly fire does not discourage me in the least. True patriots are still fighting #JudgeCrypto-Cuck's confirmation. The rest of you churchian fags can suck it.

Maybe retiring to a large house full of cats is adequate compensation for being a childless Senior Vice President.

Better they retire to a house full of cats than import 3rd world refusegees.

date the bad boys, date the crazy boys, but do not marry them. Marry the boys who are going to change half of the diapers

If you suspect its a bad idea for a gay Hispanic nurse to change your son's diapers trust your gut.

Do they give a few affirmative action points for gays by chance?

Blogger dc.sunsets February 09, 2017 3:29 PM

@70 James Dixon,
Makes me wonder if I should have tried to find one. I lost my religion in a college class on the New Testament taught--ironically--by an Episcopalian Priest, but as I understand it, when it came to religious denominations and IQ, the Episcopalians absolutely crushed the Ashkenazim. It might have been as good a pool for my sons to find wives as it was for me.

We met at a "high church" Episcopal parish....which now has a black female (a very nice woman, NABALT) for pastor.

Yin. Yang. Facepalm.

Funny you should ask. I questioned the honesty of people who espoused Social Justice Ideals while belonging to a society that is based on a metric that specifically discriminates against blacks.

I asked if in order to be fair and avoid hypocrisy, they should offer an automatic +15 points to anyone who checks the "black" box on a census form.

crickets.

Thanks for the confirmation. Try doing a search on "Bork" as a verb, maybe learn something? See, it's like chumming the sharks to withdraw a SC nomination.

Your friendly fire does not discourage me in the least.

Ok. Should I care?

True patriots are still fighting #JudgeCrypto-Cuck's confirmation. The rest of you churchian fags can suck it.

When you quit throwing your Legos across the room in a fit of temper, maybe you could try to construct a logical argument for Trump to withdraw Gorsuch? So far you've disliked the church he goes to and some gossip or other. Got any decisions? Got any speeches? Got anything other than this emotional meltdown?

If you don't, then you should most def take it to the NRO hugbox. Don't forget your Facebook account.

"Possession of a high IQ does not guarantee user can logic." Probably your group should include this disclaimer on every mail-list email.

You could argue that all the wetbacks and niglet refusegees are bringing down the average IQ. I would only need a few points. How many times can you take the tests?

Anonymous fop February 09, 2017 5:23 PM

So the answer is, "No, I cannot construct a logical argument for Trump to withdraw Gorsuch, all I can do is emote".

Thanks.

And then,

Damnit.

So, the only judicial ruling you can cite as evidence that he's a commie is a dissent in which he states that government officials who engaged in sexual abuse of a child are not immune from lawsuits merely because they committed their acts of pedophilia under the color of law.

‘Sovereign immunity’ may be fine with the ‘conservative’ establishment, but protecting government employees from punishment for the crimes and torts they commit is not an Alt-Right principle.

This is definitely orchestrated. Dunno if you're following the news here in the UK but this has been discussed by everyone in my marketing department:

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/public-cash-paying-for-growth-of-fake-news-vb2hbvs3x

I work at one of the Big 4, and word came down from on high that we're to exclude Breitbart from all digital ad placements for every client. That's a huge chunk of change Breitbart is about to lose.

This followed on from another story yesterday about ads appearing being "hate speech" (Bad Think) videos. These articles, combined with the Daily Mail thing? Something fucky is afoot.
