Back with a vengeance

As we suspected, there appear to have been internal shenanigans taking place at Amazon, as one or more SJWs appear to have abused their positions to interfere with our ability to sell THE CORRODING EMPIRE.

We're still working with Amazon to sort out exactly who was responsible for precisely what, and to establish what, if anything, legitimately needed to be changed according to their guidelines. This should all be nailed down by the end of the day, but in the meantime, you can now order the book and post reviews again.

Thank you for your support and for holding fire while we sorted out who was, and who was not, responsible for the removal of THE CORRODING EMPIRE. The very helpful KDP representative to whom I spoke said that he did not believe there was anything improper or misleading about the title, the name, or the cover, but we're going to wait to get explicit permission on all three elements before settling on a final edition that will see print.

Mr. Amazon SJW just blocked it again. Unsigned, of course. SJWs always double down.

We're writing to let you know that readers have reported a problem in your book. The error significantly impacts the readability of your book. We have temporarily removed it from sale so that more readers don't experience the same problem in your book

Error Category: Wrong_Content; Comments: The content of your book is a different edition than what the detail page indicates. Because this could be a serious issue for many customers, we have had to temporarily block your book from sale. Please correct the image so that we can make it available for sale again.

UPDATE: Another phone call and we're back up again.

UPDATE: And blocked again, albeit this time UNDER REVIEW, not memory-holed.

UPDATE: Finally got to speak to a supervisor. She's not only escalated the matter to legal, but has assured me that the book will be unblocked, stay unblocked, and that the matter will be fully investigated. It's not just the three blocks, the culprit(s) also put the book on the Excluded list for Amazon Associates, which prevents others from being paid when someone buys the book.

UPDATE: The book is live, and is now locked for a fourth time. SJWs really do double down.

Hopefully you make more money from the Castalia version.

I'd rather see the original cover be sold than the new one. The nod to Foundation with Harry Seldon is neat, but unnecessary, given what this book is.

Amazon systems usually come on line one step at a time. Note that it isn't showing any book rank yet. It's also possible that whoever was responsible broke multiple connections. Try again in 30 minutes. It would be useful to know if it permits review postings or not.

Just working off the description blurbs, Corrosion sounds a lot more Asimovian. The idea that old tech is breaking down and people don't know how to fix it anymore is way more plausible than Space Magic used to work but now Space Magic doesn't work anymore. It's like the plot of Care Bears or Power Rangers or something. "Oh no, we can't valmorphanize anymore! Bummer dudes!"

Blogger VD March 22, 2017 11:13 AM

That's what we're waiting to sort out. We have both the permission and the ability to do so now, but there is no point doing so if the original culprit is still there and interferes again. So, I want to get everything sorted out and get explicit permission from a manager, as well as assurances that this cannot happen again, before we modify anything.

It depends entirely on the publisher. If they want the books DRM free, they are. If they want DRM, they get it. Whether the publisher listens to the author in the matter also depends on the publisher.

Only 8 of the 25 reviews are verified purchases. About half of the 1-star reviews are either bogus or complaints about price. However there are some detailed 1-star reviews that are legitimate critiques of the book. I predict people will remain divided over this book when you factor in it is mostly just a foundation for the rest of the series (lots of cliffhangers), the vulgar language, and the high Kindle price.

A bad book and a broken shovel are not legitimate comparisons unless the book physically falls apart in your hands or has so many spelling and grammatical errors that you are legitimately prevented from reading it.

It's neither fair nor legit to review a book you haven't read in its entirety. Quoting Vox from a few years ago:

I don't review a book without having read the entire thing. In fact, I don't even put a book on my Reading List without having completed it. I think it is unfair to both the author and the person reading the review to pretend that a review is relevant if one hasn't read the whole book. ...

There is nothing wrong with saying "I didn't like X, I couldn't finish it." That is informative in its own right. But it should not be confused with an actual review.

If you didn't want to finish Scalzi's book because it's just that bad, then write a blog post about it. But don't review it.

Read every single word on every single page of The Female Man by Joanna Russ and then do the same with Dhalgren by Samuel Delany. Go ahead. I dare you.

Broken shovels are just broken. Bad fiction is like eating moldy bread or a rotten egg.

Blogger Cail Corishev March 22, 2017 3:01 PM

That's the way these things usually go. Some SJW gets his panties in a wad over something, and he happens to know an SJW or have a friend-of-a-friend who works at the site in question, and the on-site SJW takes it upon himself to attack the offender on his comrade's behalf without good cause, figuring he will be protected by anonymity. They probably get away with it nine times out of ten, because many people would buy the initial excuse.

By definition, Amazon reviews are personal reviews, not professional ones. I think Stickwick is trying to hold them to professional standards, and I don't think that's really reasonable. It's not like Amazon pays people for their reviews.

I suspect it's probably more of a case of having a different interpretation of "review."

A review is not just, like, your opinion, man.

My interpretation, which is the correct interpretation as far as Amazon and other review channels go, is that a book review is an analysis of the book. It can be based on personal tastes, but it still has to analyze all of the elements of the book. You cannot analyze something you have not read in its entirety.

Y'all are not thinking this through and failing to see the potential for abuse if you justify reviews based on partial reads. If I were an SJW, I could "review" Vox's books after reading just the first sentence. I found his use of "It begins on a day like any other" extremely pedestrian. I couldn't go on after that. Put it down. Total garbage. 1/5 stars. Where do you draw the line?

Amazon is not a forum for whining. If you can't get through a book, put it down and move on to something else.

Blogger Markku March 22, 2017 3:49 PM

No, customer review is in fact just your opinion and nothing more. The official guidelines say only this: "Content you submit should be relevant and based on your own honest opinions and experience."..."Comments about pricing, product availability or alternate ordering options are also not about the product and should not be shared in Customer Reviews"

Blogger Markku March 22, 2017 3:51 PM

Well, now I'm interested in reading it.

If you've made a good faith effort to read the book and not been able to, I'd say that qualifies you to review the book. Now, what exactly is a good faith effort? Ah, that's the rub, and there's room for disagreement.

I'd say if you've made it at least 1/3 of the way through the book, you've made a good faith effort. Others might draw the line at 1/4 or 1/2. However, I think you need to make it clear in the review what percentage you read and why you couldn't finish the book.

Amazon two strongest core competencies are its mailrooms, and its internal investigations. (Its software build systems are as important, but not as elegant.) They are an unusual set of core competencies, but they dovetail well with a rapidly growing electronic retailer.

In the computer hardware and software parts of the company, the internal investigations are called "C.O.E.s" (Cause Of Error investigations). They focus on what went wrong, when, and how -- not on whom to blame. They are performed promptly; their results are sometimes publicized; and their conclusions are followed up on.

. . . leading to an accurate prediction of whether or not it is worth the time and/or* money to read to the person reading the review. It should not be a critique, because that would, ya know, ruin the book. Enough information for an investment decision. No less, no more.

"Y'all are not thinking this through and failing to see the potential for abuse if you justify reviews based on partial reads."

Have you thought through the potential abuse of physics? Or, is actual abuse the real issue? It isn't enough to ban guns, we have to ban exothermic chemical reactions, because the potential for abuse.

Think through the issue of "potential for abuse."

I have never written one, but I have found "I couldn't finish it, BECAUSE . . ." reviews to be very useful to me.

"Fizyks, by Ralliday & Hesnik, appears to have substituted runic spells for all of the equations. I say appears, because I didn't read the whole book, just the first few chapters and then thumbed through the rest. Maybe a bit of actual Fizyks snuck in there somewhere, but I didn't see it.

Cannot recommend for first year students."

And I'm not sure how reading the book prevents people from, ya know, lying in any case.

"I'd say if you've made it at least 1/3 of the way through the book, you've made a good faith effort."

And be honest about it in the review, so the review reader can properly weight it. Stickwick can discount it if she wishes, and I can find it tells me exactly what I want to know, at the same time. Nobody gets abused.

I have a brain. I even have some idea of how to properly apply it. I can review reviews for myself and assess whether or not they are of value to me.

@117 "A review is not just, like, your opinion, man."

It is on Amazon! Yes, some (few) people do actual good solid reviews of books or products. MOST people do not. Most people describe the book and their experience with it as they would to a FRIEND: "I liked it," "I hated it," "The binding fell apart," "It kept me up reading till 2 a.m.!"

Amazon is NOT a 'reviewer site' -- it's a common market, and the common people write down their opinions, not their reviews. And the other common people READ their opinions, and decide if it's a thing they want to buy. MOST people don't bother with searching out reviews in magazine or "review sites" -- opinions on Amazon will do!

Blogger James Dixon March 22, 2017 10:38 PM

Well, the reviews on Amazon tend to hew closer to what normal people want to know than the "magazines or reviewer sites" reviews.

Anonymous Eduardo March 22, 2017 11:05 PM

Actually, Mainstream Review Media is Fake Media. Reading a review is far more accurate. If you don't mind the stars-system and simply analize the arguments you can draw a nice picture of what the book will be like. For you.

So when someone reviews you book and congratulate peripheral stuff, then you know the book is at best average. When the bad reviews dish out some fleshy arguments that repeat themselves in many reviews, odds are it is a real problem/feature in the book.
