Cerno on 60 Minutes

I understand why Mike decided to give it a go. But after seeing the results of his and Scott Adams's recent experiences with the media, I have absolutely no intention of modifying my policy in the slightest. I'm not attempting to build a media career and Mike has already proven that a single shot or two of mainstream media exposure does not sell books, so there simply isn't any upside in it for me.

I'm interested in continuing to help the Alt-Right, the Alt-Tech, and Blue SF build their own platforms, not waste any time with the fake news.

Wow. Hugh Downs has really let himself go.

I know Mike had once mentioned a possible 2018 political run, or beyond, so this was probably his way of getting himself out there.

Blogger James Dixon March 27, 2017 4:10 PM

I have to agree that your policy makes the most sense. You have nothing to gain by dealing with the opposition on their own terms.

That worth watching as much as a Hillary rally.

I feel like watching Mike do 60 min and dissect it on periscope has been a master class on mindset, energy, frame and rhetoric. Take his energy and apply it to your daily little run ins with regular people.

Anonymous Samuree March 27, 2017 4:26 PM

It was a VERY bad decision for Cernovich to go on the show. It only exposed his "beliefs" to an educated audience...and that's not what he needs.

But it's obvious why he went on the show. "Dance Dance Dance....look at me...I'm dancing. Look over here."

Sound thoughts. More than ever, the Right is in need of its own platforms. We are running on borrowed time on youtube, periscope, patreon and AdSense.
WRT Legacy LibMedia, I feel the best you can get is a draw. We may take that as a win, but simply cause it is beats the more likely outcome of a smear. Cerno did alright, but I don't expect it will be getting any easier to get a fair hearing going forward.

Anonymous Carlos Danger March 27, 2017 4:29 PM

This was done as part of the bigger rollup to kill off pedo gate. The whole spot was done for that purpose primarily. Damaging the alt-right was second. Does anyone watch this stuff still? He shouldn't have gone on their Show. They will edit everything you say against you.

Anonymous Pony1 March 27, 2017 4:31 PM

Mike should have made a condition of him coming on that he would require a corresponding interview of Scott P. on his podcast where he could ask Scott the 'tough' questions regarding what is fake news. That would have been interesting.

Anonymous Scintan March 27, 2017 4:33 PM

What is it with people on the right that each one thinks he's the special snowflake who can beat the media, even when the media is rigging the game?

If beating the media was that easy, there'd be no need for alternate platforms.

I didn't watch "60 Minutes", but Ted Koppel talked to Sean Hannity on the CBS Sunday morning show. It was the same thing.

What these highly trained journalists don't grasp is that we know they have a point of view and an agenda. I am aware that I am not objective about a lot of things -- the Second Amendment, abortion, Christianity, Clintons, etc. -- and I take that into account. No one is objective, and if someone says they are, you know immediately that they are self-deceived if not simply liars.

In order to redeem themselves, the people like Pelley and Koppel have to admit their biases, but they can't -- either because they are too limited intellectually, too lacking in self-awareness, or too cowardly. Maybe all of the above.

The audience will take what they want from this interview. Mike fans thought he did great under the circumstances. He accomplished his goal which was to increase his brand.

However, the layman will think he was fake news. For example, my boss told me this morning that he saw the episode and was quite angry. He said "those f-ing fake news guys should all be arrested!".

He meant Cernovich.

Blogger dc.sunsets March 27, 2017 4:55 PM

I concur with the consensus. Starve the legacy-leftist media of material and let them continue to evolve into an increasingly shrill echo chamber whose "center" approaches and inevitably tips into open lunacy.

Yes, I agree it already has done so from our point of view, I refer to the Muddy Middle.

Blogger VD March 27, 2017 4:59 PM

What is it with people on the right that each one thinks he's the special snowflake who can beat the media, even when the media is rigging the game?

The lure of the bright lights, presumably. Also, it's very flattering to the ego to be pursued as if one is an important national figure. You have to understand, they don't act the way they do on camera when they're contacting you. They are very positive, they do enough homework to appear to be a little bit favorable to you, and they are very experienced at reeling people in.

It takes a very strong character to resist the temptations they offer, especially when you see how others have benefited from positive puff pieces. I mean, imagine what effect a pair of New York Times and Guardian stories that were as slavishly uplifting as the Scalzi stories were would have on my writing career. With my bibliography, I'd compare favorably with Malcolm Gladwell and suddenly be regarded as a first-rate public intellectual.

Of course, that will NEVER happen, not even if a rogue reporter wrote such a story. The editors would kill it.

People see what they're primed to see. Your boss is still embedded in the prior narrative. This is anything but a surprise.

As society splinters, people will take from every datum only what they're primed to accept. On CNN we don't believe a report on the sky being blue anymore. This is the direction for coming years.

I am amazed by the people who think that any so-called alt-right figure should offer an interview on conditions, especially conditions to be satisfied afterwards.

Remember, we're dealing with knaves here. They'll think nothing of twisting your words on national TV in order to make you appear before the world as a demon in human form, a madman, an incompetent clown, or some combination of the three. And then just refuse to fulfil their half of the bargain. What are you going to do? Sue them? Please. Even if you can afford the hassle, and even if the court finds that their refusal has harmed you in some way and orders a few thousand in damages, they have still hurt you a lot more than you could possibly hurt them.

It really does seem better just to let them know that they needn't hesitate to get lost.

News on fake news is fake news.

A great example is BBC's pre-election analysis on Nov. 6 2016.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-37846860

They have a real guy - not a Russian hacker - who explained he's in it solely for web ad link-click revenue.

And the one specific example he cited was fake news that Hillary was leaked a debate question.

Only that was fact.

Despite every MSM news outlet believing Donba Brazille and calling the allegation fake news.

If your boss has any pull in your company at all, know he's a fucking idiot whose judgment needs to be considered seriously compromised.

Blogger Orville March 27, 2017 5:34 PM

the most entertaining part of Scott Adam's foray was his brother's reaction to the little lies Scott embedded in his interview. Scroll to the bottom of his post and watch it. Priceless.

60 Minutes is dinosaur media. Until Mike posted that he'd be on it yesterday, I had totally forgotten 60 Minutes existed. Apparently, the only way to actually view part of Mike's segment was somebody had to record the fucking TV, because 60 Minutes is so stuck in the past, they've never heard of YouTube.

And of course, like good liberals, they won't actually engage with the information. They just declare it "fake news", because of COURSE Hillary's campaign was being honest.

I doubt I'll be watching any more recorded off the TV segments of 60 minutes again. They're worse than useless.

Plenty of books are flogged by the MSM and sink like a stone. If you read the Amazon reviews, it appears that many of Scalzi's fans read his books just to spite the Sad/Rabid Puppies.

Anyone notice how news anchors always have improbably resonant, authoritative-sounding voices? They're not being hired on journalistic ability, that's for sure.

Anonymous teapartydoc March 27, 2017 5:58 PM

I figure Cernovich calculated that he may get a little more exposure for his blog out of this. It isn't going to hurt him with his readers (I'm not one, by the way), and there may be a few grannies out there who would be interested and get their families in the know. I had never read Some Dare Call It Conspiracy until I saw my eighty year old aunt reading it and asked who she was voting for in a primary (it was Ron Paul).

Blogger slarrow March 27, 2017 6:13 PM

Here's what Mike said about his 60 Minutes appearance (which, spoiler alert, didn't do much for his traffic or book sales):

TV is a great way to show your friends and readers that you can hang in a heavyweight fight, going against professionals who selectively edit you out of context for a living. It’s great fun for the people.

But remember that your platforms are what matter most.

Build your own platforms, build your own brands, legacy media is dying.

So I think Mike accomplished what he set out to do. But Mike's personal mantra is "Too Big to Ignore", and he follows the conflict=attention=influence model. It's not Vox's goal or model, so it's not surprising they approach the question different ways.

Blogger Megamerc March 27, 2017 6:15 PM

Cernovich did really well. One thing I noticed is that nearly every time he spoke he was on the offensive. That is absolutely a must in that situation (although better to avoid the situation in the first place). Cernovich knows the video's gonna be cut and edited, but if every answer is a shiv to the media and the left, it makes their editing job much much harder. Some of his thrusts hit home and made it to the final cut. That's impressive.

Still, anybody unfamiliar with Cernovich and his brand is going to come away thinking, as Jeff said earlier, that Mike Cernovich is a dastardly fake newser.

Attack attack attack attack

You'll probably take a few blows too, but you'll definitely land your fair share.

Blogger Sillon Bono March 27, 2017 6:16 PM

Well, I seriously hope Cernovich knows what's he's doing because they will come at him sooner or later.

Blogger Kevin Blackwell March 27, 2017 6:20 PM

Well that is quite humiliating and dishonorable.

Would it be worth your time to make terms and conditions, that these cunts would actually agree to? Probably not. The only thing I can see would be to agree to whatever, and then 5 minutes, 30 seconds before anything happens you require compensation for your time. That's the honorable option. You could agree and then not show up. Best if used for anything live. Will it be worth it to do this? I guess someone will have to try it. Otherwise non engagement is the best option.

Blogger Megamerc March 27, 2017 6:21 PM

I've been lucky, in that the only media attention I've ever had was for positive reasons. Even with that, though, it was obvious that the people involved were looking to frame the issues rather than report them. The follow up questions were pure giveaways.

No, thanks. I'll pass. There are too many other ways to get your point out to the public for it to be a smart move to let the enemy frame your positions via interviews.

Vox: "I'm not attempting to build a media career and Mike has already proven that a single shot or two of mainstream media exposure does not sell books, so there simply isn't any upside in it for me."

Somewhat related: if you were to write Media Whores today, who would be included?

I think Megyn Kelly would be an obvious one (though I'm not entirely certain she meets all three criteria), but can't recall who all you had targeted for version 1.0 to consider who their contemporary counterparts might be.

Cernovich must know that he is being targeted. His visibility was second only to Milo and now that Milo has been dealt with Mike is the primary target. If they are successful in dealing with Cernovich they will continue to work down the list until there are no more visible opposition leaders around whom others can rally. Once they have the public voices silenced the Internet voices can be dealt with by other means, remember Obama gave away the names and numbers.

Blogger Happy LP9 March 27, 2017 8:21 PM

Shame on 60 mins, shame on Ted for insulting Hannity too.

Never talk to the media but this was great! 60 mins was hostile towards Cerno and Cerno was a class act professional up against an interviewer saying to his face, "he lied, spreads fake news?" Cerno wasnt tolerating that,m also how much of the interview was cut out or not released to the public, that reflects alot.

To some degree this goes beyond the right or left or failed opposition media but its a bit of a generational conflict as these old codgers are on the wrong side of history versus the awake younger counterparts whom know they have a (future worth working at as defeat is no option) country with problems thanks to to their policies.

They showed obvious fake news/satire about Trump, along with real, or at the very least, probable news about Clinton, to pretend they were exposing fake news on both candidates, and give the illusion of not having a specific agenda in covering up for the one.

I've seen that tactic with people who want to make a specific conspiracy theory that is actually probable look ridiculous, by putting it alongside other theories that are really out-there, in order to paint the probable theory as being just as ridiculous as believing in those other theories, of a flat-earth, or reptilians.

Anesthesiologists have insanely little training in such things. Its not even the same sport as what they do. They probably encountered it in a two month rotation in medical school and a 1 month rotation during their intern year.

It confirms how the sausage is made, that it is truly pig shit, instead of just a funny taste in the finished product.

I'm glad someone went to the trouble of exposing the whole process, so that whenever Leftists make their fake offers of equitable challenge in their pet venues, we can just point to Cernovich's 60 Minutes case study.

That clip did not make Mike look good at all. Regardless of how Mike rules his space, he is still stepping out onto an entirely different level. You're playing with the big boys (in the sense that you're there on their terms, with their state of the art tools, they set and have absolute control of the flow of questioning, and they have the last verbal and editing word). Mike punched back, but - just being honest - it was ineffective. The one or two truth bombs, left hanging there and not HAMMERED home, didnt do much to refute the scathing narrative Pelly peppered the piece with. Man, the narrative was brutal.

To be fair, in that setting, few people (think Trump) could pull this off and make Pelley/MSN look unfair and untruthful.

I need to find the entire piece and see if this clip was just a fluke.

He got me to sit thru the entire interview with Molyneux... and I really hate podcasts. I'd rather read a transcript because it takes me maybe five minutes tops instead of taking 40 minutes to listen to people talk. And then I bought the damn book.

FWIW, The only way the MSM will ever regain any credibility with the people they've written off is to post the raw interviews on controversial stories. And CBS News isn't about to do that because it'll make Pelley look like an arrogant fool.

There is just nothing to gain.

What do you say about the floated in the other thread, that it's not about message (as it'll get mangled beyond recognition either way), it's about brand exposure?

As in just getting raw eyeballs on you and your brand, and not getting a good image of yourself correctly across on their medium because they'll never allow it to happen.

Blogger Koanic March 28, 2017 12:21 AM

If before today you asked me "Who writes Danger and Play" without priming me with Cernovich's name, I probably wouldn't know.

But that Molyneux interview was very impressive. He's a happy warrior alright. I don't agree with him on everything, but I'd much rather see him in politics than the Boomer afterbirths we've got now.

If we achieve critical mass, a fellow like McCain might be in danger of a Senate floor hickory concussion again!

Not 1.

The audiance that watches 60 minutes is a bunch of baby boomer has beens that want to feel like they know it all. And watching 60 minutes makes them know it alls.

Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama files bill to repeal 0bamacare.

Here it is:

"Effective as of Dec. 31, 2017, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is repealed, and the provisions of law amended or repealed by such Act are restored or revived as if such Act had not been enacted," .

That's it. That's the whole bill. Brooks then says this:

"If the American people want to repeal Obamacare, this is their last, best chance during the 115th Congress," Brooks said. Those Congressmen who are sincere about repealing Obamacare may prove it by signing the discharge petition.

"At a minimum, the discharge petition will, like the sun burning away the fog, show American voters who really wants to repeal Obamacare and who merely acts that way during election time."

Like the sun burning away the fog.

Nice.

I just can't see what the great appeal of 60 Minutes is for Cernovich. It doesn't cater to a crowd that Mike will ever have resonance with. The boomers are only concerned about SS and Medicare surviving until they die, and fuck anybody who might threaten that.

What could he possibly be selling to that crowd?

Blogger Cail Corishev March 28, 2017 3:47 AM

so there is a built in limit to any potential damage.

And any potential benefit is equally limited, for the same reason.

Mike himself said why he did it. It wasn't about building his brand, reaching a new audience, or anything like that. It was to show his family and friends he's a stud. That's not the worst motive in the world -- I daresay we've all succumbed to it -- but it's not part of any grand strategy either.

Point is...I paid Federal, State taxes, including SS taxes, for all those damn years. Never took a cent from the government. You get a statement from the government to show how much you have paid-in through your lifetime.

The problem, Clay, is that our generation has eaten the seed corn. Telling people who have been screwed by a lot of people who look just like you to just get over it and call their congressman, as if 1) we didn't already own their congressman and 2) it would do any good, is not the way to ensure a brighter, happier, not-starving-alone-in-the-freezing-dark retirement. Especially when they will have to pay for that.
You think you paid your share. You paid your Mom's share. These Xers and Millenials will have to pay our share.
So quit blaming them if your old age is going to be shit. Call your congressman.

Nate... don't misuse verses from the Bible.

If we took your interpretation, we shouldn't broadcast anything that shows people either accomplishing feats that most people can't do, nor broadcast Jackass or America's Funniest Home Videos where people do dumb things.

Because that might "make them stumble".

Blogger Nate March 28, 2017 10:58 AM

"Because that might "make them stumble"."

hardly. Don't aspie. There is a hierarchy. "don't make another brother stumble" is down the list.

But it is still on the list.

Little to lose. little to gain. So why do something that sets a bad example and may well cause someone else to get themselves severely harmed.

Remember context. this is at a time when lots of people are trying to figure out how to handle MSM requests.

Little to lose. little to gain. So why do something that sets a bad example and may well cause someone else to get themselves severely harmed.

Putting aside how much Mike got out of his appearance... Evel Knievel. Pro Wrestling. Are these people thus sinful? It's literally the same concept.

People severely hurt themselves trying to imitate them. That would rank higher on whatever hierarchy you're talking about. Or is it only sinful if you're not netting a large enough profit, changing that 'little to gain' to 'lots to gain'?

Oy vey.
