Infogalactic: a new front page

It looks very much like the Wikipedia front page, but it is actually a very much-improved version that represents the first step towards replacing the Wikimedia engine with DONTPANIC. It also draws its news directly from the Infogalactic News page. Check it out!

On this day...
March 1
752 BC – Romulus, legendary first king of Rome, celebrates the first Roman triumph after his victory over the Caeninenses, following The Rape of the Sabine Women.
509 BC – Publius Valerius Publicola, Roman consul, celebrates the first triumph of the Roman Republic after his victory over the deposed king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus at the Battle of Silva Arsia.
1633 – Samuel de Champlain reclaims his role as commander of New France on behalf of Cardinal Richelieu.
1642 – Georgeana, Massachusetts (now known as York, Maine), becomes the first incorporated city in the United States.
1781 – The Continental Congress adopts the Articles of Confederation.
1815 – Napoleon returns to France from his banishment on Elba, start of the Hundred Days.
1932 – Charles Lindbergh's son is kidnapped.

If you've got ideas for anything you'd prefer to see on the front page, make a suggestion in the comments below. Also, at the Brainstorm last night, we decided to kill the Rehash name for the coming Reddit-style addition, because lame. We haven't settled on a new name yet.

Also, we're still looking for more veteran Reddit mods to volunteer to run Infogalactic mods, so if you're interested, get in touch.

The Techstars announced that Infogalactic News will be receiving a "last update" time and Dow, Gold, and EUR/USD tickers soon, and that we will be adding Infogalactic Tech, Infogalactic Nouvelles, and Infogalactic Nachtrichten pages once we finish the version 2 News Editor.

As always, if you want to get involved and support these efforts, please consider joining the Burn Unit. It is the nuclear fuel that powers Infogalactic.

If you don't see the news immediately at Vox's link, just refresh.

I like the West-centric selection. The article about the Dorset Ooser and associated folk traditions gave me some ideas for a work in progress.

How about a review of The Flat Earth Society?

There, I said it lol.

Vox, given the importance of Brexit might GBP/ USD or EUR be included?

Anonymous grey enlightenment March 01, 2017 7:35 AM

how about live stats to see how infogalactic is growing and being used

Anonymous Anonymous March 01, 2017 7:41 AM

Nice page, interesting your story is about peregrine.

Peregrine stock,PPHM, has been on a run lately with indications of a much bigger move coming.

Blogger VD March 01, 2017 7:42 AM

Vox, given the importance of Brexit might GBP/ USD or EUR be included?

No, not enough UK users to be relevant. It also tends to move in common with EUR/USD, so it would be redundant from the snapshot perspective.

We're trying to avoid clutter.

Anonymous p-dawg March 01, 2017 7:45 AM

How about WriteUp for the reddit replacement? It's simple and it has the homonym thing going for it.

Blogger Subversive Saint March 01, 2017 7:58 AM

You are working hard to make Infogalactic my second stop each day. Excellent and thanks!

Anonymous VFM #6306 March 01, 2017 8:01 AM

Sports portal on front would be used by me.

Blogger 1337kestrel March 01, 2017 8:02 AM

Question, who wants to see usd/eur? Is it really relevant to anyone but FX traders?

Another one... pulling stock tickers, oil prices etc. can really slow down loading. Is the site designed to load and display all the other content while waiting for 3rd party data?

Blogger Jakob Niedzwiecki March 01, 2017 8:08 AM

My suggestion for the Reddit-style project: "Ribbit."

Anonymous Mike Rock March 01, 2017 8:21 AM

On the graphic, is there a reason the outer 'orbit' is not continuous? The two halves do not align and it drives me nuts.

It's two letter 'g's.

The new front page looks excellent. I especially like the "did you know" portion. Good job, team.

Excellent. Love the 'On this day' & 'Did you know'. Helpful history that people may not seek out for themselves unprompted and perhaps spark further inquiry.

The only addition I can think of is something Western arts related:
Daily featured composers, artists, paintings, writers, books..etc

What about "Redshift" for the reddit-like thing? Fits the galaxian theme, the meaning is appropriate (shifting focus outward from ID, expansion of that knowledge core), and is a nod at Reddit.

If I could offer what I believe to be sound advice, don't get into having a homepage that takes a lot of download time. When tempted to add something, ring up google search and note how spartan the page is and how successful google is. Too much decorative stuff on the home page can be the functional equivalent of falling in love with yourself, making too much of self presentation. (Otherwise I like the look. Nicely done.)

Not mobile friendly.

Mobile browsing passed desktop over a year ago.

Mobile continues to grow.

Desktop is flat.

If your stats show more desktop usage than mobile, it indicates mobile users (which are the majority of users) are avoiding your site.

Another vote for "Ribbit",and for mobile friendly as well.

Anonymous hoots March 01, 2017 11:42 AM

"Ribbit" -> Cue accusations that we're just building an alt-right echo chamber. Clever name though.

Infogalactic News uses slightly different terminology...

+1 for REDSHIFT (though there is the obvious slur of it...) RIBBIT is good too.

Whoever does the headlines on IG News, thank you.

Vox, the JCW link on Infogalactic News jumps to EveryJoe dot com where I'll be damned if I can find a current JCW article. A search of the site for John C. Wright gives a random list of articles that are all 1-2 years old. Also in the Political section it's not clear who the contributor is without clicking on each article. Real PITA.

Glenn Reynolds link at USA Today.

Blogger Dave March 01, 2017 1:13 PM

con't The Glenn Reynold link should the model for JCW's link. If that isn't possible I suggest linking to something else.

On the IG News page, just noticed that the Milo Yiannopoulos link points to his Breitbart page.

Last update is 2/15, 2 weeks ago.

Don't follow Milo enough to know where his main online presence is, but I see he has this blog with last update 3/1.

Curses, I thought of that at the end of the Brainstorm. You snooze you lose.

Thought of Croak, but that's DOA.

+1 for Redshift.

Blogger Dave March 01, 2017 3:15 PM

@43 good catch. Had to post this from Milo's blog:

Vox's alma mater was known for hotties; now they practice mirrorless Mondays.
https://milo.yiannopoulos.net/2017/02/mirrorless-monday/

And another lesson in hypocrisy: News of the abandoned pets and trash is not sitting well with many social media users.https://milo.yiannopoulos.net/2017/02/clean-crews-find-six-puppies-two-dogs-abandoned-dapl-protest-site/

How about a page 3 Girl?

Anonymous Phantasmic March 01, 2017 6:38 PM

Are there plans in the works for an Android widget for IGNews? I should think that due to its nature of periodic rather than real-time updates, a widget would prove more useful than a dedicated app. Or maybe that's taken care with a simple RSS feed.

Blogger Beau March 01, 2017 8:48 PM

Ribbit

Blogger Guy Galt March 01, 2017 10:45 PM

I'd like an RSS feed link to the infogalactic news section. If you use the home page in feedly, you get a lot of other stuff besides news. if you try to use the news main page, feedly says there is no rss feed available. Thanks!

Blogger tim March 01, 2017 11:57 PM

Yes! Great upgrade. Nice splash page! Never forget about about Heironymous Bosch and his Dante Inferno images, epic. Just put Info Gal link on FB stating it will in due time pass Drudge without the two headed baby face eating stories.

Blogger pdwalker March 02, 2017 1:55 AM

re: front page

re: ribbit: +1

re: rss feed in infogalactic news page - nice feature if you can find the time to squeeze it in.
