I didn't mean tomorrow tomorrow. Rolling algorithms! Russian hackers! Country full of bigots! Amazon right-wingers!

How many Guardian articles does each book have? That's the only metric that really matters!

Anonymous Precious March 07, 2017 2:59 PM

Indigo was right, Corroding Empire isn't ten times better than Collapsing Empire. It is more accurate to say it is five and a half times better than Collapsing Empire.

Blogger seeingsights March 07, 2017 3:03 PM

When Scalzi made the book deal with TOR, Hugh Howey made the point that Scalzi should have self published instead. Hugh Howey is a science fiction writer and leader in the self publishing revolution. Howey's book sales is something that 99 percent of science fiction writers can only dream about.
Now, I'm not so sure if Scalzi would have been better off self publishing.

I'm assuming it's not by delicious coincidence that it comes out exactly one day before Scalzi's book. Either way, this is going to be a hilarious tearshow from Tor (Scalzi will just be pompous).

I dunno about Finnish women, but there is no shame in a Dutch woman bench pressing more than you. Well built in every possible way.

Now, I read the teaser for Corroding Empire, and I have this nagging idea that I've come across one of the turns of phrase before. Something about the description of the algorithm problem is just gnawing away at my brain, it's driving me mad.

Anonymous Steve March 07, 2017 4:18 PM

That's completely uncalled for, Vox. You know those rating systems are flawed. They don't take in account houses that have, uh, more than two television sets and other - other things of that nature!

Anonymous Longtime Lurker March 07, 2017 4:22 PM

Admiral Scalzi is in for a rude shock after he returns from naval maneuvers (aka his vacation cruise). In the meantime, has Emperox Tor said anything about The Corroding Empire?

why? Scalzi doesn't mow his lawn, he just takes pictures of it.

I don't get how this is doing so well as fandom is disintegrating as we speak:

"Nashville’s science fiction club, the Middle Tennessee Science Fiction Society, will hold its last meeting on March 8. The club has been around for 45 years, been involved in 30 Kubla Khans (1973-2002) and several Xanadus. Their final gathering will be at the Green Hills Public Library, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m."

"The club seems to have fallen apart due to age, sickness, death, divorces, people moving out of town, working hours which conflict with the meeting, personality clashes, unemployment, the loss of new (and especially younger) fans, the dreaded GAFIA, etc. At the February meeting it was agreed among the six of us attending that the March meeting will be the last…"

Blogger Cataline Sergius March 07, 2017 6:20 PM

I was curious about what was number one in the that category.

And I sorry.

I am so, so sorry that I looked.

The Preor emperor bestowed honors on warrior Brukr sen Zak’lu centuries ago—honors he does not deserve. Since then, he has fought to prove himself worthy of the emperor’s support. He works to protect and care for the females within Preor Tower no matter how difficult they make his task. One female constantly disregards orders and makes his duty nearly impossible. Hannah—with her flowing hair, teasing smiles, and generous curves—torments him with what he cannot have. He aches for her like no other, his dragon rages when he leaves her side, but without the Knowing stretching between them he cannot claim her. Or can he?

It is however on Kindle Unlimited, so everyone else is competing with free but still...

Anonymous Satan's Hamster March 07, 2017 7:13 PM

"I am so, so sorry that I looked."

The good news is that Amazon has, of late, started telling writers that they can't put a book in both Romance and Science Fiction categories. This has caused much shrieking and wailing from The Usual Suspects: 'But my book isn't Romance, it's a special snowflake that's both Romance and Science Fiction! It has spaceships and everything!'

I'm guessing the miscategorization putting Romance books in every single category has grown bad enough that it's now actually hurting Amazon's income.

Anyway, just preordered this one. Finnish SF is the best SF.

Anonymous Camilla Cameo March 07, 2017 7:16 PM

Though it seems hardly different, 'Corroding Empire' is such a better title. 'Collapsing Empire' is totally generic; it could be any empire in any setting: fantasy, historical, even business. It sounds really dull. 'Corroding' is much more visceral and ominously evocative and hints at a terrifyingly mechanical and technological world.

Can you provide any links to either the policy announcement or the shrieking? This could be a real blow to Pink SF.

Satan's Hamster @52: "The good news is that Amazon has, of late, started telling writers that they can't put a book in both Romance and Science Fiction categories."

Odd, that...considering that they have specifically allocated sub-categories in the Romance genre to very specific subtypes:
African American
Clean & Wholesome
Collections & Anthologies
Contemporary
Fantasy
Gothic
Historical Romance
Holidays
Inspirational
LGBT
Military
Multicultural & Interracial
Mystery & Suspense
New Adult & College
Paranormal
Romantic Comedy
Science Fiction
Series
Sports
Time Travel
Westerns

Unless this is an attempt to "clean up" cross-genre labelling and putting all Romance only in their proper sub-categories, they're seemingly working against their own labels.

Blogger Markku March 07, 2017 8:09 PM

What do you mean "this category"? When you publish a book, you pick 1-3 categories into which you want to place the book. For example, Brings the Lightning is in both Western and Adventure. What this would mean is that among those categories can be either Sci-Fi or Romance, but not both.

Blogger Markku March 07, 2017 8:11 PM

"Romance > Science Fiction" is obviously kosher.

Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy
AND
Books > Romance
...is not

Anonymous Satan's Hamster March 07, 2017 8:16 PM

"Can you provide any links to either the policy announcement or the shrieking?"

I read about it on a writing forum a couple of weeks back. Some 'SF' Romance writers were complaining that Amazon recently added a warning to the help page on Romance categories which said not to put Romance books in SF or Fantasy, but it looks like they're not actually enforcing it yet (which would be easy to do when uploading the book, as they already do for Erotica).

Looks like this is the one: https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A19G4ONBAU6NO3

"Warning: Do not add books from any Romance category to these categories: Science Fiction & Fantasy, Children's."

Blogger Durandel Almiras March 07, 2017 8:19 PM

I mean, who has not read the #1 book in Science Fiction Romance - Barbarian's Lady: A SciFi Alien Romance?
https://d188rgcu4zozwl.cloudfront.net/content/B06XFW8CCX/resources/1756665182

or Brukr: SciFi Alien Weredragon Romance (Weredragon!) - https://d188rgcu4zozwl.cloudfront.net/content/B06XC25287/resources/419045774

or The Gender Game? - https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/515o5CQk8uL.jpg

I think we are clearly missing out.

By the way, how did A.G. Riddle get 14,409 reviews on his debut book? That's a mystery story I'd like to read.

Blogger Durandel Almiras March 07, 2017 8:23 PM

@68 that's because Romance is a SciFi subcategory according to Amazon https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A2G3ZMYDPB9VRM and not the other way around.

1. You're comparing apples and oranges. An audible version of Corroding doesn't even exist.
2. Comparing the other listing you supplied, though, Corroding still does better (75 vs 174).
3. This is another day after 'yesterday'. Not only can you not tell time, but you moved the goalposts THE WRONG WAY.
4. Liar.

And then there's this...

March 8 @9:00pm EST

The Corroding Empire (Kindle Edition):
#28 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > Space Opera

The Collapsing Empire (Kindle Edition):
#30 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > Space Opera
