Socialism still doesn't work

One of the many reasons I am so skeptical of "self-correcting" science is that humans quite observably learn absolutely nothing from history, even when logic, theory, evidence, and experience all line up conclusively in harmony:
Facing a bread shortage that is spawning massive lines and souring the national mood, the Venezuelan government is responding this week by detaining bakers and seizing establishments.

In a press release, the National Superintendent for the Defense of Socioeconomic Rights said it had charged four people and temporarily seized two bakeries as the socialist administration accused bakers of being part of a broad “economic war” aimed at destabilizing the country.

In a statement, the government said the bakers had been selling underweight bread and were using price-regulated flour to illegally make specialty items, like sweet rolls and croissants.

The government said bakeries are only allowed to produce French bread and white loaves, or pan canilla, with government-imported flour. However, in a tweet on Thursday, price control czar William Contreras said only 90 percent of baked goods had to be price-controlled products.
We shouldn't be too contemptuous of the Venezuelans, though. They fell for socialism. We fell for feminism and civic nationalism. All three concepts are equally stupid, as all three fly completely in the face of our current understanding of the relevant sciences as well as thousands of years of written human history.

South American countries seem to continually fall for socialism/communism because their populations of native peoples are so great and make demands you would expect from primitive people. Contrast with USA and Canada where our primitive indigenous peoples were largely removed to reservations.
When a South American government falters and leans toward complete Marxism, it takes a Pinochet type to keep hold of modernity and sanity. And requires brutal application of will. There is no way to conduct affairs in a lily-white, totally lawful way.
Fujimori in Peru (Japanese descent) also had to resort to violence, bribes, corruption etc to restore the economy and rule of law. But the Marxists always re-emerge.
Vox is right, genes determine the culture.
Maybe a two-state solution is needed everywhere. If you want communism, go ahead and enjoy life on the reservation. Expect nothing from your Christian capitalist neighbors, they're busy planning for Mars.

I'm from South America, in my country we exterminated the Indians. Unfortunately we have mezitos and blacks, in all country's its the same crap. They are the last educated, they rob and murder, collect welfare etc. We are a majority white Hispanic country, Italians Spanish and French (like myself), but the numbers are lowering cause of low birthrates. Meanwhile negros can't stop fucking while collecting white people money. Argentina Chile and Uruguay are the only white majority countries here and they want to get rid of that. They think Brazil is the solution but it's not, in Brazil is the same thing but more negros and mestizos who of course bring the whole society down with their low iq behavior. Race mixing is a lie, the races are very clear and they should be preserved. I pray for Europe and us to do the right thing, kick all this scum out of kill them while they can. Even if I myself get blocked I don't care, just save the west from the jewish filth that had planned this for centuries. They are the enemy, never forget what happened to christ

Here's the paradox: If those who existed in very simple, low-division-of-labor places exhibited recurring infatuation with socialist folly, how can people who exist in complex, highly differentiated systems resist such magical thinking?

Almost no one (especially Ph.D.'s who teach econ) grasps from where our wealth today arises. No one is allowed to say that it is a specific kind of people whose cream of the crop produces it. No one seems ABLE to grasp that complex systems require freedom (e.g., market prices) as a precondition to spontaneously coordinate the production of the quantity of wealth we now take for granted.

We're used to thinking that the world around us was inevitable. We take our relative freedom from death by the Three Horsemen for granted, yet it is an extreme outlier across the span of human history. Our existence is not teleological. Things don't have to get better, faster, cheaper, taller, shinier, louder, etc. forever. But after almost 300 years of just that, we're surrounded by those who are the imbecile great-grandkids of machine-builders and who insist on pouring sand into the gears of the process by which their lives are made possible.

I've been meaning to make a defense of civic nationalism here and this as good an opportunity as any.

Socialism and feminism have been abject failures in achieving their utopian goals, but I think civic nationalism has a better track record. Pat Buchanan frequently refers to the pause in immigration in the 1920s and the forging of a distinctly and broadly held American national identity that peaked in the 1950s, and I think it's a worthy argument.

I guess it can be argued that the newer American identity borne out of the world wars and the great depression and the development of movies and television is inferior in quality or more dependent on illusory abstractions then the blood and common law roots of the Republic, but it had a pretty good run, which I don't think you can say for socialism or feminism.

Is the case against civic nationalism that the revolutions that took hold in the 1960s were an inevitable product of letting in so many Jews and Irishmen and various other non-Englishmen into the country in previous generations?

Venezuela's probably still very nice if you're part of the "in-crowd." That Maduro hasn't been overthrown informs us that he maintains enough consent to fill out the government agencies and security apparatus.

Since we also have the nation-destroying forces of feminism and civic nationalism, we’re arguably on a worse trajectory than Venezuela. Presently, we enjoy greater prosperity and liberty only because we started off much better, and we still have 60% of our original core.

If feminism and civic nationalism lower us to 40% or so, the US will have its own bread lines — White bread lines. And the cucks who haven’t been disemployed by outsourcing or Affirmative Action will probably tell starving Whites to check their bread-line privilege.

Doubtful. Their average IQ=84, possibly lower, since many of the smart people have already fled.

Stefan Molyneux did a couple of great podcast interviews with people from Venezuela. One caller (who was obviously much smarter than the average) affirmed that people in his country were excessively stupid. He said most were just waiting for a new leader to rescue them and solve all of their problems, while having zero understanding of what caused those problems in the first place.

Odds are, they're doomed.

Do western whites retake the west, purging the marxists and continue progress or do we fall and see the black and brown hordes consume the remnants of the west. These guys dislike civic nationalism because they want to be transformed by immigration (Mohler might be the exception here).

It was the intellectual, political and economic elites hard pivot away from civic nationalism that opened the door for unbridled globalism and its hasty, sloppy retcon of American mythology.

I would agree with you were it not for the little fact that MOST (90%) of socialist leaders in South America are white, in Argentina, for a white normal citizen the talk of economic liberty will leave him wondering if you just spoke to him in Mandarin...the common white Uruguayan thinks that a welfare state is the solution to his problems while trying to apply for a Visa to Italy since his country is aging rapidly and stagnated thanks to the policies he promotes...or see how the white Argentines destroyed their own country during the 20th century. The same scenario plays out in Brazil and in a lot of places. Sorry but the whites in South America and most of Europe are simply stupid and too short sighted to see the consequences of their choices...

It's been going for 2,500 years, give or take. Gain angles on power, subjugate/corrupt the authority into puppets, finance the expansion of the Empire across the Earth in search of loot to plunder. When the inevitable effect (backlash from the downtrodden) of their cause (abuse of the weak for profit) comes back to destroy the empire (when inevitably its reach exceeds its grasp, like all power addicts), bail at all speed and leave the puppets to take the lashes.

They've been reaching for centuries. Eventually they become too complacent and don't bail fast enough, or otherwise annihilate their progeny with their decadence.

Causes produce effects, and equal and opposite effects.

Taking abusive routes around problems results in being too weak for the eventual, unavoidable problems.

That's a surprisingly cheerful thought. It's nice that much of our country's stupidity is concentrated in a relatively few densely populated areas, where people are incapable of feeding, warming, or policing themselves. If we walled these areas off and went away for a year, much of our country's problems would magically solve themselves.

And, for a nice bonus, viola, our country's average IQ gets a nice boost.

AIDS meds cost $2000-$5000 a month per person, and Truvada Prep that HIV- people take to prevent AIDS (instead of using condoms) costs taxpayers/insurance companies $1,500+ a month. How many gays do you think could afford that out of pocket?

If you look at gay or jewish film festivals there will always be at least one film set in Israel with an old jew/jewess and a young cheap arab rent boy/girl. They want the cost of their rough trade subsidized by the state.

Also I went to check on a relative & I saw her neighbor shoveling snow in a way that made more work for him. He was obviously making a one shovel wide path and shoveling the snow uphill. I told him if he shovels it down hill it will be less of a problem when it thaws/freezes, he told me that was the stupidest thing he ever heard. Probably everyone seems lucky to him.

Back when beds that turn patients were new I was asked to come help from another floor because the x-ray tech couldn't get their film plate behind an obese patient, there were 6 people there that working together couldn't get it behind. I said "stand back everyone I will show you a magic trick" "first my lovely assistant will put her film inside a pillow case, then I will say some magic words over the max inflate button" . Presto chango rearango just me and the tech were needed.

The USA Republic died in the 1860's. The USA Empire that took it's place is no more it than Russia is the Soviet Union. The USA Empire effectively died in 2001. Given a world where one has access to perfect information about each individual, and complete authority to accept or reject each individual, I believe civic nationalism would be the correct model.

Human traits and behaviors fall on a bell curve. If you wish to build a nation of people with a specific set of traits and behaviors you are definitely going to find racial, cultural, and religious biases in your population. Some groups will be over represented, and some underrepresented, versus the global population. However, you will find suitable citizens within each major group.

But we do not live in a world of perfect information. We are only beginning to understand the human genome, and we have absolutely no way to reliably read the mind or know the heart. And those of us in America live under a Constitution which precludes any real test of genetics or beliefs as a prerequisite to obtaining or retaining one's citizenship.

Given the realities of this world I've come to realize that Vox's model has greater predictive power. It is not a perfect model. It breaks down at the finer levels of individual experience, which is why so many resist it and turn to civic nationalism. Probably everyone here...Vox included...can come up with a personal example of someone who was a recent immigrant, or the child or recent immigrants, yet had more respect for and love of 'the rights of Englishmen' than Congressional Democrats with a lineage that predates the revolution. Group (race, religion, or culture) based nationalism simply fails at such a fine level.

But at larger scales it's quite effective at modeling, explaining, and predicting historical events. Because at larger scales the average genetic and behavioral traits of a population determine the outcome. And nobody has tried the experiment whereby a nation is built out of people who pass specific genetic and belief tests regardless of their general classification. We don't even know how to do such a thing.

For me personally that means I judge individuals as individuals. Your behavior will determine my judgement of and relationship towards you. (This of course excludes low information scenarios such as passing someone on the street. Yes I am more likely to keep my eye on the Mexican dressed like a gang banger than the Englishman in a business suit.)

But on larger scales race, culture, and religion are the key predictors. It's the reality we are given, not the one we might wish to live in.

My only counterargument is that genetics are not sufficient. It was whites who accepted socialism, women in Sweden that say not to mention the race of the rapist. I think sex is a bigger factor (women are different from men).

But that's just the problem: it peaked and then turned on itself in a very short time. In the 1950s, all the factors were in place to make civic nationalism work, if it could. Immigration had been low for a few decades, so the melting pot had had a couple generations to do its magic, and most would say the only significant ethnic conflict was black/white. Prosperity was high after the war, enough that the upper and middle classes were able to spread out into the suburbs and get some breathing room between themselves and those they didn't care for. Patriotism and civic responsibility was sky-high, from kids saluting the flag and reciting the Pledge every morning, to Hollywood putting out an "all-out for Uncle Sam's war effort" message for years because Hitler.

Yet, despite all that, the people who lived in that heyday of civic nationalism -- especially those who were raised on it -- spent the following decade trashing everything about it. Whatever the reason for that reversal, the result of this ideal experiment in civic nationalism was that it didn't last as long as a decently-maintained family car.

So if we somehow created those conditions again -- high post-war patriotism and prosperity, decades of low immigration, and civic responsibility being promoted by all aspects of society -- we might get a good decade before it all went to heck again. That's not very inspiring.

Female:

1) They are not married with no future possibility of such.
2) If ever married they are very likely divorced and bitter.
3) If married still, they have a slacker husband.
4) If they are associated with a synagogue or church is any way they are preening liberals, the "look -at-me-so-virtuous" type. Of course in a leadership position they are doing the Eve thing, rebelling against G-D.


Males:

1) They never served in the military or male oriented team.
2) Almost all of the men have never had the defining moment when they took a risk at something they could really fail at with large negative consequences. In essence they missed that coming of age quest that seems to be vital to men's self-respect.
3) A sub-set of 2, get their internal self-worth from the reflected praise of others, supporting the left is an easy way to get that.
4) They are a slacker, minority or have decided they are a victim. In short they expect to take out more from the system than they put in.


Common to both males and females that I know who think themselves intellectuals, they think they are going to be part of the elite that tell others what to do. They never quite get the "revolutions eat their own children" or Lenis "we will hang them with the rope they sell us comments"

The army guys who went along with overthrowing Chavez all ended up in jail for a while. Plus Chavez established his own extra military force made up of what are essentially government handout takers.

I take the theft of stuff by the military not to be any sort of plan, but one of the problems that go with running a society under elaborate price fixing schemes. It creates endless opportunities for criminal gain, and so of course implementing such a system in a Latin society that is not (dare we say) noted for honesty is not likely to go well.

A thought I've been chewing on for a while...

Humans lack of any real predators is a problem. Most apex predators can still lose their weak and young to other predators, illness etc.
We keep our weakest most I'll members alive and allow them to reproduce. Is socialism perhaps an emergabrvresult of this. It makes evolutionary sense as a survival strategy for the weaker members to support socialism and for the more cunning members to support it as they can out compete the weak and live large. Everyone else gets screwed.
I don't have a suggestion for how to address the weak and infirm propagating but it can't be positive.

At a higher level I can see war as our current "predator" but it doesn't act effectively to stop the weakest and infirm members from propogating first.

I think there's a spectrum here. The Zeroth Amendment is an extreme that I don't think a large majority of conservatives would sign off on when spelled out. I mean 76% of Southern Baptists support Trump's immigration orders - that's more SBs in favor of a repudiation of the Zeroth Amendment than lean Republican.

Notice they never talk about ROEI ( return on energy invested) i.e. it takes X barrels of oil to extract y barrels from this field.

Oil shale and finds like this one generally have very low EROEI. Basically you get back very little net energy when you consider how much it takes to extract it and get it to market.

Last year 3000 professionals lost their jobs in Alaska, mostly engineers & architects. That's a whole lot of construction jobs that won't exist this summer, all (almost) due to a lack of petrodollars that aren't being invested for the last few years.

I agree with this also but on this site the view most commonly expressed runs contrary and I think it is because of their understanding of Christian doctrine. I see no contradiction between Christian belief and mass sterilization of subhumans and genetic defectives. I believe that eugenics will once again become fashionable (just as nationalism or nativism) after a sufficient enough lag time to allow for a thorough consideration of readily observable reality and a recognition of current trends and where they will lead our civilization if nothing changes.
A great man well ahead of his time, Nikola Tesla was an open advocate of eugenics. His opinion and reasoning (not clouded by emotional rationalizing) is persuasive...

It was a sad day after I arrived in college and realized that everybody who perished in the grip of the 20th century's great horrors had died in vain. Nothing was learned, and here we were heading down the same dreadful trails hewn by that 19th century ideal that just won't die, socialism.

By rights, it ought to have died already by the time I got to college, and then the Soviet Union fell. Which seemed to underscore that point. But no!

The curse of socialism is that it is the end result of human hubris. Socialism is the belief that man can force the world around him, including the other people, to behave in a specific prescribed manner as humans would attempt to dictate. Life is a complex system and as such these attempts at control will fail every time
The inverse of that would be a capitalistic type system which attempts to understand the nature of the inherent complex system and then utilize the behavior of that natural system to the best of our ability.

The oil companies put in a series of bridges to get access to the area west of the Colville River, where this find is. They have bet big on there being lots of oil there. This and the previous big find were not surprising, I think.

The preamble to the Constitution does not provide a reliable way to read the mind, know the heart, or decipher the genome. And the point of my post seems to have flown straight over your head.

I am a regular here. I have read all of Vox's posts which refer to the preamble. I agree with him 100% that the 'melting pot' is a dangerous myth. And I agree that in our imperfect world returning to the standard and intent of the preamble would be far better then what we have in the US now.

But there are good reasons why civic nationalists buck against the idea. When your friend, who is the child of a recent immigrant, shows far more respect for the Constitution and a far superior work ethic to a congressional Democrat whose lineage in America precedes America itself, then race (or genetic descendant) nationalism seems to be a flawed idea.

And that is because it is flawed. It is a very coarse and crude model which breaks down on the personal (high information) level. But my point (dude), which I was making in response to a civic nationalist, is that it's still the best we've got given the world we live in.

And let us not forget that the year is 2017, not 1788. The best you're likely to get is "the genetic descendants of people currently within U.S. territory, minus illegals and some people holding temporary visas or work visas." I would cheer if that became the case. But it would not be the mix that existed in 1788. Which means we would still be left with daunting challenges. (The complete inability of Africans to adapt and assimilate after two centuries being one painful example.)

Socialism is a form of dysgenics. Take resources from high-earning (statistically, higher intelligence) people, so that they're able to support fewer children, and move them to low-earning or negative-earning (statistically, lower intelligence) people, so that they're able to support more children.

Cover and bake for 10 generations and voila, you have a low-IQ, easily-manipulated society. The great thing about this system is that it eventually works no matter what the underlying race or culture is (see: Sweden).

1) Seeing ability in people that when push comes to shove will be on the other side is NOT a good thing. If someone wears the uniform of the other side, they will end up either a partisan of that side, exiled, or dead. None of those includes "fully and accurately deemed loyal so permanently accepted as a full citizen, along with all his descendants".

2) The challenge with what to do about the blacks isn't anything but implementation. We KNOW that most of them are unsalveageable at our standards. The dumb ones, the criminal ones, the indolent ones, and the incontinent ones (latter sexually or politically, not just WRT recreational chemicals) all need to leave. I figure give them a chance to leave via 747. After that, comes ship cargo holds. After that, comes helicopters that take off and land on U.S. soil (but fly over water), or front-end-loader buckets headed to combustion-based processing facilities (where everyone leaves as CO2, steam, and colloids). The ones that wore out their welcome to the point they're in that last categories I figure are just Darwin Awards.
