The media reviews of Tor books

Are by Tor-published authors. Apparently Ars Technica doesn't quite grasp the concept of "conflict of interest":
The Collapsing Empire is a hilarious tale of humanity’s impending doom
John Scalzi’s latest novel is a thought experiment about the fall of civilization.
ANNALEE NEWITZ - 3/28/2017, 1:30 PM

Annalee Newitz is the Tech Culture Editor at Ars Technica. She is the author of Scatter, Adapt, and Remember: How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction, and her first novel, Autonomous, comes out in September 2017.
Yeah, so, about that first novel.

Tor has been doing this for a while now. The contributor at the Guardian who wrote at least one puff piece about Scalzi was a Tor author too.

Annalee Newitz is a full on SJW. When I used to read iO9 her writings were hilarious in their illogic. Actually her writing there was the reason I gave up reading the site.

I was stalked by an editor at Ars Technica years ago, because I explained that border walls work. Ars is a fully converged organization.

Unfeminine attire, short and dyed hair. Warning signs all over - do judge the book by its cover.

Blogger bob kek mando ( Death To The Boor-geois, Keks To The Lol-etariat ) March 28, 2017 3:32 PM

don't forget, Annalee is also the girlfriend of part time tranny, part time Ars Technica contributor and and part time Tor author, Charlie Jane Anders.

if Tor held an orgy, you might be forgiven for thinking you were at an Ars Dorito night.

Anonymous Broken Arrow March 28, 2017 3:32 PM

That's why if you do a review on Amazon and have received the book for free it really isn't necessary to disclose that information unless your conscience just won't let you sleep at night. Professional and amateur reviewers receive free books all of the time and don't disclose the fact. Don't kid yourself that you are the white knight on some moralistic crusade to clean up the industry in this regards either. There's tremendous cross-contamination and conflicting interests in the publishing industry in regards to recommendations and reviews.

Anonymous Longtime Lurker March 28, 2017 3:32 PM

Jack is an anti-patent scientist turned drug pirate, traversing the world in a submarine as a pharmaceutical Robin Hood, fabricating cheap scrips for poor people who can’t otherwise afford them. But her latest drug hack has left a trail of lethal overdoses as people become addicted to their work, doing repetitive tasks until they become unsafe or insane.

Hot on her trail, an unlikely pair: Eliasz, a brooding military agent, and his robotic partner, Paladin. As they race to stop information about the sinister origins of Jack’s drug from getting out, they begin to form an uncommonly close bond that neither of them fully understand.

And underlying it all is one fundamental question: Is freedom possible in a culture where everything, even people, can be owned?

Blogger Jon Mollison March 28, 2017 4:08 PM

We're in a strange part of the technology evolutionary curve where it isn't entirely clear where 'being a fan who likes talking about books' stops and 'being an influential critic' begins.

Rawle is an author in his own right. Those of us in the early stages of a writing career are put in the awkward position of being both writers and reviewers. As some 'net rando with a low traffic blog it's not a big deal, but if the Guardian paid me to write a review for their readers - bet your ass I'd feel obligated to mention it.

I'd have zero objection if she posted that review on her own site. But on a supposedly neutral news site like Ars Technica, it's just wrong. It's an absolutely clear violation of journalistic principles and there is no way that an editor should have permitted it.

Nor should David Barnett been permitted by the Guardian to write about a fellow Tor Books author, particularly without disclosing that fact.

Blogger James Dixon March 28, 2017 4:28 PM

Well, yes, but then you're a "conservative" (in their opinion). They don't hold themselves to such standards. What is it Glenn Reynolds says, if it weren't for double standards they'd have no standards at all?

As odd as that sounds, I suspect this will seem quite reasonable to them very soon.

Blogger Feather Blade March 28, 2017 4:52 PM

@18: let me guess, the book does not end with the drug pirate repenting of her wicked ways which caused so much misery, and retiring to dry land to take up farming.

.. also the drug agent is not out to stop her, he's just out to cover her trail?

Urgh.

When you start tracking down Castalia House authors to complain about the conflict of interest when they write positive reviews of other Castalia House books, then we'll have a news story.

I am sure Tor would be happy to do so, but unfortunately, in order for Tor to publish Damien's work, Damien would actually have to write something. That is apparently a problem for him as for so many other would-be authors...

Anonymous VFM #6306 March 29, 2017 5:21 PM

Maybe if Tor gets into the blank notebook business, they can put Damien's name on the cover.

Although, if the notebooks are contracted through the public school system, that might pose a conflict of interest for Damien, as he is already being paid grant money to not write a novel.

Scatter, Adapt and Remember may have been an interesting concept, but it was crap as a book. I can't imagine a novel by her being ay better.
