The rarest of Pepes

That's one hell of a collector's item. Give him credit for being a good sport about it. And score one for the Dread Ilk, who are everywhere.

The question asked of him was glorious. And I'm betting money he lives to regret his answer to it.

There are even Dread Ilk in Africa. And I mean the REAL Africa, not just South Africa.

Anonymous Difster March 27, 2017 4:19 AM

His defense of his contract is pretty amusing. How late does he have to be before he's in breach and gets renegotiated? I don't know how these things work.

Blogger Markku March 27, 2017 4:33 AM

Now to get Vox's signature on the same book and it'll be so rare it may collapse into a supermassive black hole.

Blogger Calven March 27, 2017 4:36 AM

Sweet, sweet candy geysers to the ceiling. The smell of spun sugar and caramel delight the senses.

Anonymous SciVo de Plorable March 27, 2017 4:37 AM

Unless the direction is up, they can only ask to renegotiate. Such hubris. Wow.

That's one hell of a collector's item

Scalzi would be wise to buy a few copies, sign them, and then wait a few years. Collector's item indeed.

Give him credit for being a good sport about it

To be fair, the "feud" or whatever it may be called between him and Vox has probably raised his stock within his SJW circle and othersmall who lean left. He has every reason in the world to be a good sport in a situation like this. Vox has always said he was good at self-marketing (although I bet he was gritting his teeth after)

After watching it a second time, I am amazed at how the guy has almost no concern over Tor's financial standing and trends. Either a) he doesn't care what happens to his publisher, b) he has a back up plan and no loyalty, c) Tor is not in any financial difficulties, or d) he has no foresight whatsoever

Blogger Shimshon March 27, 2017 4:58 AM

A surprisingly good sport. His laugh sounded almost like a squee. Difter's right. There are certainly terms which Scalzi must abide as well. He's already late on his first book. Is it possible that sales expectations are not part of the contract as well?

Anonymous John Scalzi Unfinished Dante Project March 27, 2017 5:00 AM

When I had frittered half my advance away
I found myself within a shadowed debit
For I had lost the path of easy pay

Ah, it is hard to calculate what was lost
That savage lawn, emerald and dense
Of which I was proprietor and boss

Too bitter to lose--butthext is not more dread!
(I mean without booty lube) Discovered there
Were other marvels on which my mind was fed.

I cannot clearly tell how I wandered drear
My lawn, after I had checked my bank account.
I wondered if I would end up like King Lear

And bang my own daughter. I saw that on stage
In a very hip theatre. Too ignorant by far
Those ilky morons who quote the page.

Anyhoo-- when I’d reached the bottom of my checkbook
My heart was harried by so much fear
I decided to fuck terza rhyma, rhima, whatever, and get a beer:

But if you want to see how this pilgrim ends
You must hold your breath, don't get the bends.

Blogger Markku March 27, 2017 5:04 AM

Also to get Milo's signature on it, since he wrote the foreword...

There are still such things as book signings? Guess I'll have to put on my best velvet doublet, get in coach-and-four and go to one.

They rarely are. I have a relative who's topped 50,000 twice for major publishers. Her personal appearances are often scantily attended notwithstanding.

And she's WAY better looking than Scalzi ...

Anonymous Guy in the video March 27, 2017 6:34 AM

I'd estimate there were at least 100 people at the signing. Given that I didn't actually purchase his book, I was very near the end of the line. One of the bookstore employees walking back through the line aked, "You're going to have him sign an HP Lovecraft book?" I just shrugged; she obviously had no idea I had another book tucked away behind it.

Blogger Silly But True March 27, 2017 6:52 AM

Blogger JP March 27, 2017 6:53 AM

Get him to sign a copy of that photo of him in the dress. Or no, that one where he's in the stockings, doing the superheroine landing pose.

Anonymous Roundtine March 27, 2017 8:01 AM

To be fair, the "feud" or whatever it may be called between him and Vox has probably raised his stock within his SJW circle and othersmall who lean left.

I'm not sure anyone would know Scalzi outside of science fiction if it weren't for Vox. The feud elevated him on the left. A lot of the Alt-Right and manosphere are vaguely familiar because even Heartiste blogs about him once in a while. But Scalzi knows where his bread is buttered, and he probably earns more from satisfying Tor editors than from expanding his market with less political plots.

The former are usually Alpha and High-T.

Maybe Scalzi's instinctive reactions to these things are actually decent, but when he's given time to THINK about it, he goes and ruins it in a misguided effort to cater to his rabbit audience.

Thank goodness consensus underpins financial stability.

Anonymous DaveInjustice March 27, 2017 9:15 AM

honestly I don't think Scalzi is such a terrible guy. Gamma, Sure. Motivated by his insecurities, absolutely. But when he's put on the spot to react to something like this you see he actually can have a sense of humor about it and not let it bother him. The problem arises when he's in a forum where people are paying attention, like twitter or his blog (people are sorta paying attention), where he feels the pressure to respond with some cutting comment and not ever show any weakness that he melts down. Here he clearly just saw it as "well this is a silly situation" signed it, answered the question and moved on. He didn't even seem particularly uncomfortable because his gamma impulse to "Not Lose at any Cost" didn't kick in.

Blogger Mr Traumaboyy March 27, 2017 10:13 AM

OMG!!! His voice is exactly what I expected !!!! I bet there is a video somewhere of him saying "oh yeah I will clean that mess up" while his great white whale of a wife gets pounded by some hood rat.

Maybe. Or maybe he's the type of guy who shamelessly copies Heinlein, constructs a false Narrative about how he published the novel online and it went so viral that he caught the attention of Tor books later that week with his pitch to publish a book about how to copy a Heinlein novel, whereby they offered him a publication contract over the holidays...and know to always be "on" when contacting the public.

No one should be surprised he signed SJWs Always Lie.

Because SJWs always lie.

Concerning his voice, I always thought it sounded like a character from fractured fairy tales, cannot remember which one at the moment.
As for the video, I honestly thought he handled it well and I was pleasantly surprised. Knowing that he was being videoed most likely was the reason. If on his website or twitter he can act badly and not have to deal directly with the confrontation.

Anonymous Broken Arrow March 27, 2017 10:51 AM

He's faced worse at books signings without a doubt. He's a professional at this and it shows. I've never seen him, but from what I've read and heard he can be entertaining and does well with the crowds. This is one of the reasons Tor likes him, it's not all about writing skills in his position, it's knowing how to "play the game" as well.

Blogger Gordon March 27, 2017 10:59 AM

A guy can be a total dick in some situations, particularly when being egged on by sycophants. The same guy can be conventionally pleasant in others. This is not unusual. After all, even Malwyn isn't a sadistic gleeful torturous she-wolf ALL of the time. She has PTA meetings, volunteers at the local VA hospital, and makes children's toys out of the teeth she extracts from her victims.

Topkek. May 2001 commentary from Patrick Nielsen Hayden praising U.S. Appellate Court's three-judge panel removal of injunction on sale of The Wind Done Gone:
http://nielsenhayden.com/electrolite/archives/earchive_2001_05.html

PNH rightfully noted: "Since letting the injunction stand would have cast the status of all kinds of legitimate critique and parody into doubt, this is very good news."

Too bad whomever caused Amazon to bar sale of The Corroding Empire didn't share PNH's sensibilities on parody.

Anonymous Longtime Lurker March 27, 2017 11:36 AM

It's a good thing John Scalzi doesn't have a flag (like Shia L did), because Vox would own it by now.

Anonymous BBGKB March 27, 2017 11:43 AM

LOL he actually said "all I have to do is" when talking about keeping up his end of the contract. Even at the hospital I would ask an ambulance to take me elsewhere if I was shot in the parking lot so I wouldn't be caught dead there I cared about its financial standing & honoring my contract.

None of you guys ever convo'd with Scalzi on Twitter? He's an instant dick. One of the biggest assholes I've ever encountered on the platform. And he jumps right to it, no beating around the bush, straight to the snark and put-downs. Of course the Internet encounter is always a different thing than the personal encounter. On the other hand, it is also more revealing in some ways, all the "polite society" masks just aren't there. I bet the real Scalzi is the dick on Whatever and Twitter, not the one out hustling on the book tour.

Blogger Harsh March 27, 2017 5:37 PM

Scalzi is a great marketer. He has the chops. His problem is going too far, exaggerating and outright lying, then not admitting failure. He got as far as he did because he is good at selling. I give him props for that.
