They're bad. Really, really bad.

The Zman is unimpressed by the edgy edgertons of conservatism posturing as if the Left is, or ever was, even remotely threatened by them:
So-called Movement Conservatism is a zombie movement, shuffling along until someone has the decency to put it out of its misery. That does not mean the army of people who have made a living peddling it over the last few decades are going to retire. They are looking for some way to weasel their way into the new thing. They look over at the cool kids raising hell on-line, building their own thing and the old guys of Conservative Inc are naturally jealous and want to be a part of it.

This is not an easy task. Buckley Conservatism was revealed to be nothing more than the candy coating to the Progressive nut inside the prevailing orthodoxy, when they went all in on the NeverTrump nonsense. It’s not that the cool kids will not forgive them. It is that there is no point to it. These are yesterday men with nothing to offer. National Review is one of those abandoned houses in Detroit. It’s only purpose is as a reminder of past mistakes. Otherwise, it can be plowed under and not one will care.

The current relationship of this new thing on the Right to the old conservative movement is a lot like what David Horowitz described as the relationship between the New Left and the old reds from the previous generation. When the New Left got going in the 60’s and people noticed it, suddenly every old commie in the country was trying to get in on the act. They were rejected not because they were old, but because they had nothing to offer.
The Movement Conservatives took over the Reagan Revolution and the Tea Party because neither of those movements had a strong philosophical core, which permitted the cucks and cons and neocons to run their usual scams. The reason the Alt-Right will not be taken over by them is because our nationalism and historical realism is utterly anathema to them; they would rather make common cause with the Left with whom they share a common utopianism.

As always, it comes down to Plato against Aristotle. If you are willing to ignore the world and embrace the ideal in its stead, you will sooner or later side with Plato. If you are willing to accept the world unflinchingly, you will eventually come down on the side of Aristotle.

The Alt-Right is the only Aristotelian alternative at this point in time. All the other Rights, from neoconnery to constitutionalism and civic nationalism, are riddled with Platonic accommodations. All the other Rights require you to knowingly profess falsehoods.

The modern left is a parasite that is specifically evolved to feed on and destroy mainstream conservatism. That is because conservatives still believe in being respectable while the Enemy controls the terms of respectability. So conservatives are always forced to fight on terrain of their opponents choosing.

Only by a complete and utter rejection of the Enemies narratives and a refusal to ackonowledge thier right to determine what is acceptable can the right revive itself. At this time that is only found on the alt-right.

Here is a man who understands what we are doing and why the old conservatism failed.

The rabid purity circle of the left has helped shine a light on how impotent conservatism has always been. The left went down the rabbit hole with Black Lives Matter, gay marriage, and tranny rights within a very shrot few years and the right blushed liked an up-scale whore before joining in on the festivities. The normies on the right finally noticed National Review "principles" couldn't keep mentally deranged men out of little girl's bathrooms and that is the end of movement conservatism.

Blogger dc.sunsets March 01, 2017 1:20 PM

All versions of the Left are now clearly visible, including the "Loyal Opposition" with whom Leftists repaired to the bar after work to share a cold one and laugh about the rubes enthralled by Kabuki Theater.

Those who made their living as part of the Left System (including those in Conservatism, Inc.) are dyed in the wool Leftists (at best, leftist-lite.) They are not Rightists. It's that simple.

They have as much to offer the Engine of the Right as Typhoid Mary had to offer public health officials.

Hello, fellow "Alt Righters"! Are you not yet exhausted about the winning? Trump Trump Trump USA, right? Wooo!

But I did want to raise one concern about that, though... shouldn't we, like basically let anyone into our country who wants to come in because it's morally right and stuff? Enrichment?

I mean, don't get me wrong. Trump Trump Trump! "Alt Right", woo! I've totally believed in that for a long time, since, like, before Vox Populi existed. But I just can't get rid of the concern that maybe we should, you know, compromise with the left at every available opportunity, right? I mean, right? Isn't that the way forward to real governing?

Saw this, sadly, happen to my own father. As he aged, he hit a point where he'd habitually lie over the most trivial things. He's 82 now and wouldn't even tell me the truth when I checked in on him and his house smelled like urine. His toilet was broken and not flushing correctly, but, for no reason other than being a habitual liar, would not admit it until I checked the toilet myself.

I had Lowe's come and install a new one. I dunno... maybe divine providence provides us negative examples to learn from.

This is the hurdle LRC libertarians must overcome to make it to the alt-right. The issue isn't that anarchism is an impossible ideal. They already know it in their hearts. The issue is that everything else breaks the moral code, and they'd be lying to themselves and violating their own morality to turn their back on it.

I say this with regret, not contempt. ;)

Blogger Alan Roebuck March 01, 2017 2:22 PM

One quibble: I don’t buy Aristotle > Plato although, like every important error, it contains an element of truth:

(I assume we’re not speaking of their strict doctrines, but of the general tendencies they epitomize.)

The ideal world is just as real as, and fundamentally determinative of, the empirical world. But the ideal is harder to grasp, and therefore much easier to get wrong, than the empirical.

Take religion for example. Just about everybody knows there’s a God, but since He’s non-empirical (except for God the son), He’s easy to get wrong. But He’s more fundamental than the empirical world.

Anonymous Damn Crackers March 01, 2017 2:27 PM

Absolutely correct. However, there is a rider. (Recall the famous punchline to the great joke: "Ah, very brave: death. But FIRST -- Chichi!")

You can't have 100% Aristotle wifout a li'l Plato thrown in, it doesn't represent reality as humans experience it. In absolute terms, (if you could have 'em, which you can't) Aristotle would win without a fight. But there's no such things as absolute terms. Confucius vs. Lao and Chuang Tzus, that sort of thing.

Movement conservatism didn't lack hard realist voices. They had them and then they fired them for speaking the truth. Movement conservatism didn't just happen to be stupid. It fought against truth-talkers as a matter of policy.

Ann Coulter, John Derbyshire, Mark Steyn, Robert Weissberg, Patrick Buchanan come to mind and I am sure there are plenty of others. Those folks never lost the tune. They were banned.

And thereby anyone else thinking of saying something interesting was forewarned.

Only dull voices remained.

As always, it comes down to Plato against Aristotle. If you are willing to ignore the world and embrace the ideal in its stead, you will sooner or later side with Plato. If you are willing to accept the world unflinchingly, you will eventually come down on the side of Aristotle.

Here in the present we see through a glass darkly. At our best we desire the liberty of the ideal, and are repulsed by the ugliness inherent in a fallen world. At our worst we celebrate evil and call it good; mocking, rejecting and blaspheming the good.

When we act, why we act, is subject to constant scrutiny of our fellows. Are we at our worst, or our best? Only action rooted in reality really achieves the ideal. As a Christian I am thankfully constrained to measure my motives and deeds against the canon of God's written revelation. I ask myself, "is there a precedent for this action in the Bible? Does it apply in this case?" On not a few occasions my family was confounded by my decisions. Once my exasperated sister sputtered, "Do you mean to tell me your allegiance to the Bible is more important than your own flesh and blood?" The temptation as one who desires the ideal is to cede the present while ignoring the written word that applies, thinking, "O I'll make it up to God later." We don't, the situation changes then to the worse, "Hah, when push comes to shove, he doesn't really believe the Bible, or else he would've stood by it." Better to follow God's written instructions in the present though we may garner a measure of grief in the meantime.

Historical trivia: The National Review fired Anne Coulter way back in 2001. She was fired after September 11, 2001 for saying terrorists should be converted to Christianity. Talk about cockishness!

After September 11th, George W. Bush had a 90% approval rating. He could have tightened the border majorly. But he was and is, as we know now, a determined enemy of civilization.

Oh, I forgot another great mind thrown out by National Review: Jason Richwine.

Indeed the National Review has been blessed with many brilliant seers. All were fired for the crime of seeing.

Why don't you ask Hillary how viable a movement it is? She has plenty of free time to answer your questions.

You do know that Bathhouse Barry-O's "golf" consisted of giving and receiving Lewinskys in the back seat of the limo, don't you? Trump's problem is not really so much his civic nationalism (though that certainly has its weaknesses, as has been mentioned) but the fact that he's practically alone. The entire Gay Old Pedobear Party, from the Kentucky undertaker in the Stable of Incitatii to Paul CuckRyan in the House of Whores, are cuckservatives - an enemy fifth column. Holder belongs in jail, and there should be a wave of firings for all Federal bureaucrats elevated by Hussein - a Marxist, black-supremacist. That will be a cold day in hell thanks to the likes of McConnell and Ryan - who can't assume the supine position fast enough.

The guardians of the Imperial City of the Banana Empire don't cotton to outsiders. The upside is Trump doesn't give a shit and is a good candidate to declassify details about House page rapes and the hidden Keating Five tapes.

Is this not the essence of the American Hero Ideal? To prevail against all odds?

Did you notice Trumps hair and how he says "Thank you very much?"

Trump is NOT alone:

Buckley Conservatism was revealed to be nothing more than the candy coating to the Progressive nut inside the prevailing orthodoxy

This may be the best definition of the TrueCon movement that I've ever heard.

Progressives make progress, and conservatives conserve the progress progressives make.

Blogger Cecil Henry March 01, 2017 9:57 PM

Conservative INC was a co opted subversive movement from the start. William Buckley booted out anyone not toeing the neo con line, and destroyed Sam Francis and Pat Buchanan at the behest of the ADL. These people are poison

Blogger ZhukovG March 01, 2017 9:57 PM

Movement Conservatism was extremely successful for decades. It accomplished its goals year after year. It achieved precisely what it was always intended to.....

And they would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those pesky Alt-Right kids.

Blogger Doom March 01, 2017 10:35 PM

Yeah, I can buy that.

At this point, I only look for ways to destroy... whatever. If you say it, they say it, I say it... I'm looking for how to kick it's legs out and smash it down. If nothing else, I will test... if I see a weakness. Or I will grow stronger if it can be defended better than I can destroy.

It's not a game now. It's life. And much of the theory, and ideal, and philosophy, even science due to corruption, must be burned away. Broken. It'll stand or fall on it's own.

Yet so many who claim to do so reject the scientific method and its confirmed results.

Humanity is fucked in so many ways.

Progressives make progress, and conservatives conserve the progress progressives make.

@93 Retrenched
Or as G.K. Chesterton put it:

“The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected. Even when the revolutionist might himself repent of his revolution, the traditionalist is already defending it as part of his tradition. Thus we have two great types -- the advanced person who rushes us into ruin, and the retrospective person who admires the ruins. He admires them especially by moonlight, not to say moonshine. Each new blunder of the progressive or prig becomes instantly a legend of immemorial antiquity for the snob. This is called the balance, or mutual check, in our Constitution.”

Blogger Doom March 02, 2017 1:11 AM

Lazarus,

If you choose that, then go for it. I see those as bottom feeders who will be crushed under their own weight, and the weight of the collapses from above, in short order. When pensions are gone, when benefits are ended, when the costs of the fiction arrive, then I will deal with the realities, which I am preparing to survive.

There really isn't much work that can be done within the formal government, or often within the formal church, education, or other institutions. They have to burn. The only thing now is to figure out how to survive as possible, defend, and rebuild. Go blow hot air all you like. The time for that is gone.

Fantastic article, and I especially love him tying this right-wing divide to the one between the old-school, well-educated, upper middle-class, largely economic Communists from the 40s and 50s versus the violent New Left of the 60s.

The New Left back then also had a vague philosophy and a number of utterly different, mutually exclusive ideologies within their ranks, but were united by a desire to smash the right-wing.

A great parallel to the New Right/Alt-Right today, except in the opposite direction. Let's hope we can match or surpass their success.

Ten out of ten on your pop culture trivia ... but based on partying with the annoying little skid he was in high school, minus several hundred for accuracy. Michael J. Fox after a bottle of tequila does, in fact, have a good bit more than most people of Elvis in him.

"Buckley Conservatism was revealed to be nothing more than the candy coating to the Progressive nut inside the prevailing orthodoxy"

Before Buckley and his crowd, leftism was seen (quite correctly) as an existential threat to Western civilization and ordered liberty by the Old Right of that day.

After Buckley, it became a game, a forensic battle of ideologies. We have seen what this game has gotten us since 1960.

This is not to say that Buckley and his imitators has not put forth some good ideas -- read some early issues of National Review, its candor would make even the Ilk blush. These good ideas will be absorbed into the Alt-Right while Conservatism, Inc. is scrapped as obsolete, like a derelict automobile with some good parts left.
