What's the opposite of Han Chinese?

Han Solo.

Billion dollar question though...will they also shoot first?

Thank you, thank you. I'm here every night.

I wonder if the Asian peoples distinguish between the various national character sets (assuming they exist) as we Occidental people distinguish Cyrillic, Greek and 'murican.

@4 is that a serious question? Reverse the question and answer it yourself.

This is Japanese, right? The organization of the symbols does not look like simplified Mandarin.

If Japanese, I really wish I had learned the kata better. I only learned the alphabets since everything in town had the letters above the kata.

It is simplified Chinese.

@4 The Chinese differentiate between provinces and cities. They think everyone from Henan province are criminals for instance.

Too bad the Chinese don't know you like I do, Belloq.

Yes, too bad. You could warn them, if only all dot blogspot websites were not automatically blocked by the Great Firewall.

Extremely so.

They are much more aware of these things than most Americans are.

Of course Asians distinguish between written Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, not to mention all the other Asian languages that use funny little circle shapes like Burmese. Written Japanese is based on written Chinese, such that readers can often get the meaning of a written text, though they wouldn't be able to read it out loud because the sounds in each language are completely different. Ditto for the different dialects of Chinese like Mandarin and Cantonese - same writing, different pronunciation, though not as different as Japanese.

Fun fact: the pejorative "gook" comes from the Korean word for "country" and stems from U.S. soldiers in the Korean war (the first one?) being asked "What country are you from?" They kept hearing "gook, gook, gook" and so it stuck.

I thought they kept saying my gook (beautiful country), not too different from putonghua (standardized PRC Mandarin I learned in undergrad): 美国 (mei guo, literally beautiful country; America)

Mrs. Wright. thank you for your kind reply. To my eyes it is all 'sticks' with nothing that differentiates them (at a casual scan).

In English, Spanish, Italian....The shapes are the same, yet their arrangement differs. Place Greek or Russian or Laotian together on a page next to Italian, English, etc and the contrast is amazing.

I was curious if the Oriental contrast was as striking as my latter example or as nuanced as my former example.

In some future idle time I will make a point of placing Japanese, Korean and Chinese passages side by side and see if I can perceive the obvious distinction in forms.

Thank you for answering and a blessed Easter to you and Mr. Wright.
