That might explain it

It was obvious that something with regards to North Korea had changed to concern the US, China, Japan, and Russia alike and convince President Trump to take action. It may have been North Korea's successful development of sub-launched ballistic missiles, which presumably now give it the ability to nuke coastal US cities for the first time.
North Korea displayed its submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) for the first time on Saturday ahead of a massive military parade in the capital, Pyongyang.

North Korea warned the United States on Saturday to end its "military hysteria" or face retaliation as a U.S. aircraft carrier group steamed towards the region and the reclusive state marked the 105th birth anniversary of its founding father.

State TV showed images of the Pukkuksong-2 SLBMs on trucks waiting to be paraded in front of leader Kim Jong Un.
Seeing as how North Korea is believed to be able to develop long-range ICBM that will reach the USA within four years, and SLBM that may be able to reach it now, this may be the last chance that the USA and China have to impose any changes on North Korea.

He may be less than alt-right, but an alt-right could never have gotten elected in this environment... He's absolutely amazing for someone that CAN get elected in this environment. He's the best we could hope for, and probably far better than we deserve.

As for the future? It's possible the NEXT president will be closer to what we really need and desire in a right-wing president... but right now Trump is making it possible for such a president to be elected in the future.

The more I've been thinking about, I believe Trump saw an opportunity with the assassination of the brother a couple of months ago. It's not secret The latest version of Kim hasn't gotten along with the Chinese. He had his uncle executed a few years ago and that guy was the top pro-Chinese guy in the regime. Killing his half-brother was an attempt to remove a possible pro-Chinese replacement. I think Trump recognized this and used it as leverage with Xi to get something done.

Blogger Jack Ward April 15, 2017 11:06 AM

How many subs does NK have and what are their range and do we know for sure they can actually do a sea launch? And, where the heck are they right now? If they hit us with a nuke or three, emp or direct city killer then, NK turns into slowly cooling glass. And, China's provinces near there are irradiated for some geological stretch of time. Yeah, you bet China's bell has been rung. Lord help Trump; he definitely has a plate full right now. If he stops this a constitutional amendment on number of terms may happen. Definitely gives reason to the sense of urgency. I wouldn't be too worried about their current capability, though. Even if they could make the transit without being detected, anything launched off the left coast would be in range of our defenses.

Good opportunity to petition congress for additional ABM assets.

MOAB is only for soft targets. Concentrations of troops along the border, for example.

Reinforced and deep structures will need to be struck with deep penetrators (bunker busters). They can also be lined up to play "follow the leader" for anything that is super tough.

Blogger Johnny April 15, 2017 12:16 PM

The MOAB was first built to collapse tunnels in Vietnam. These were relatively shallow tunnels in soft ground. Plus the thing will put a lot of hurt on anybody on the surface who is not in some way protected.

Where we are with North Korea is either accepting this nasty little country as a major global player, or taking out their nuke abilities. If we could pay the political price I would thoroughly take out all the nuke related development stuff, perhaps with a deliberately large amount of damage to the country and its citizens. We really, really should not be tolerating this crap from those people.

Pictures of the missile aren't that good, but if it is that size any pigboat will have to be at periscope depth or on the surface to launch it. The same technical assets that used to watch Soviet subs would work on Nork subs, and at snorkel depth or surfaced they'd be easily found with the right radar.

A 50 to 100 KT burst over any Japanese or West Coast US city would be quite ugly. It would also guarantee that Kim would be hunted down. So it's a Sampson option for him.

'impose some changes' is a euphemism for death and destruction.
The US 'imposed some changes in Iraq, Libya, Egypt, and more, and look at the result.
The family running Korea are not newcomers, they did not suddenly become more dangerous.
If they're developing nukes (if), it's because they watch the news and know that eventually the neocons will need a new war to fight, and their number will come up.
But as it's Trump at the helm now, Americans that hated the neocon approach are suddenly delighted. And they believe the #fakenews that is being fed to them. All of it.
There has to be war, at this point in the cycle, they will have their wars. The alt-right is worth very little if it supports an attack on North Korea.

So much for 'Every race, nation, people, and human sub-species has its own unique strengths and weaknesses, and possesses the sovereign right to dwell unmolested in the native culture it prefers.' (Unless the warmongers tell us you're a danger, then we will support imposing some changes).

I wonder if the reason that Fat Boy killed his half brother is that Beijing was grooming him to be their man in there and he was putting feelers around within the country. I don't think Fat Boy is "crazy" as Westerners are so free to say, but cruel and detached and the most like his Father who wanted Nukes desperately so he could do whatever he wants without interference. China would probably much rather see a normal vassal state there like they have in Laos that is modernizing it's economy. Fat Boy is continuing failed Stalinist economics and is building Potemkin Villages, the fake development in a few elite places like Pyongyang isn't based on real supply and demand economy but more like cargo cult airports. "If you build it he will come" is how the socialist mind works, fake diplomas for ghetto types is how we do it here, Fatboy thinks skyscrapers alone will do it.
Wonder if Trump is going to blow up one of these rockets on the launchpad? Call Fatboy's bluff. Is Fatboy really going to start a nuclear war over that? Or even barrage civilians in Seoul? I'm sure he'd try to blow up a S. Korean naval vessel or try to hit one of ours, but if he goes ballistic he knows he'll be wiped out and would also look like some punk who comes back to the party with a gun over some small "diss." He'd hide it from the public, but his regime would certainly know he got ground down to size and it might also destabilize his rule. His bloodthirsty reign suggests fear itself is the only thing keeping large numbers of the elites in line and away from trying something else to bring the place into the modern civilized world.

The Norks don't have a platform to reach the West Coast yet. Their missile submarine can reach Alaska, but they have no way to forward deploy it. (It'd also likely be found and sunk getting too close up there.) But that doesn't matter too much when we have Defense Treaties with South Korea & Japan.

There's still a question if they have a warhead to use, but that's mostly academic for a little while. You have a gangster with a nuke. That's pretty unacceptable.

Also, it means Japan goes Nuclear by 2020. That's going to piss the ChiComs off to no end.

@61 Looking Glass
A missile firing submarine can hit virtually every port city....East Coast or West Coast or Gulf Coast....even if the range is only a few miles.
.
I am actually more concerned with the FACT that ANY and ALL nuclear weapons can be carried on board a "civilian" airliner.

And no matter the weight of the warhead, it can be carried in the cargo hold of a merchant vessel and putter peacefully into New York, or Boston, or New Orleans, or Miami, or Houston before detonating.

Just as easily as San Francisco, or Long Beach, or Portland, or Seattle, or Honolulu.

But the real question would be....who did it? Because without knowing exactly who did it or who is to blame, how could there be any retaliation?
Who would do such a thing and blame it on someone else? Pleeeeaase.

Blogger DonReynolds April 15, 2017 6:21 PM

It remains to be seen how the USA would respond to a nuclear weapon being detonated over an allied capital, many of which are major port cities as well, thus vulnerable to attack. Seoul would be too obvious. Tokyo would be less obvious. London would be a complete mystery. Amsterdam? Athens? Buenos Aires? Manila? Gosh, there are plenty to pick from.

Anonymous Looking Glass April 15, 2017 6:55 PM

@63 DonReynolds

While the Norks have one operational Missile Sub, it's not a boomer. It's more than likely Diesel-Electric with enough range to make the Aleutians Islands or Singapore, but that's more than likely a 1-way trip. Which is enough to pull off the Gangster Shakedown they're after.

Which probably means coordinated Sub-hunting is the name of the game and why we have 3 carrier groups in the region. It's not the carriers that are so important, it's the fleet of Attack Submarines that we likely have converging on the area. Which leads to the only time I've ever asked "where's the Jimmy Carter"?

We might have upwards of 20 Subs of our own active in the region within a few weeks. The Japanese have 20+ of their own Subs on active duty. The Sea of Japan is going to be flooded with activity.

You raise an interesting point. When the Soviet Union dissolved, I recall seeing numerous pix of Soviet submarines of various classes tied beam to beam in the naval yards.

Were any of these shared with fellow traveling comrades, or sold, or traded for hugs and kisses? Even if they are worthless for Soviet use, the second string would love to have equipment like that.

Anonymous Clay April 15, 2017 9:42 PM

OK. So we used a MOAB.

That is basically designed to burst above ground.

The NORKS should worry about the "The GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) is a U.S. Air Force, precision-guided, 30,000-pound (14,000 kg) "bunker buster" bomb.[2] This is substantially larger than the deepest penetrating bunker busters previously available, the 5,000-pound (2,300 kg) GBU-28 and GBU-37."

Haven't used that one either in combat, so I understand.

Perhaps I'm late to the party, on this one.

And, yes Don. The Soviets have supplied many of their older diesel/electric subs to countries like N. Korea, China, Iran...etc.

There IS an entirely routine pre-deployment exercise for a Carrier Strike Group going on. It is normal. It is not secret. It has been planned for over a year. I know, because before I checked out on terminal leave a few weeks ago, I was one of the guys who helped plan it.

Guess what happens during pre-deployment exercises for Carrier Strike Groups? Antisubmarine Warfare Exercises, at all hours of the day and night.

Guess who participates in ASW Exercises with Carrier Strike Groups? ASW Aircraft. Also, our own submarines. Sometimes allied forces as well. And for Strike Group exercises, we routinely bring out a lot of assets to play.

BTW, as far as my post @71 goes, here's a primer. Much more info can be had.

I wonder...what is "too close", or "dangerous close" for a sub like the NORKS have, to our Carrier Group, to initiate retaliation?

I can remember the Turner Joy and Maddox taking out a few N. Vietnamese "patrol boats", as the beginning of hostilities. (so to speak)

@66 Lazarus
It is also being reported that up to 1000 people died in the MOAB strike in Afghanistan, which I find hard to believe.

The last number I heard on Fix News was 94

Don Reynolds, yes the PRE and POST USSR did sell weapons, but I would imagine that an SSBN woukd be something you keep close to your chest.

you dont give nuclear deterrent to just anyone.

Russia recently sold China an aircrsft carrier (Chinas first) and in 2010 China launched its first operational SSBN.

It would be very surprising if the NORKs had one.

Just saw the news of the NORK mkssile failure - what a joke.

FWIW, I think the NORKs saw this coming a few montgs back - thats why they had that half brother of KJI assassinated - they wanted to remove a potential successor who could be installed.

Not that the rest of the world would operate that way, but they probably are clueless. Being propped up by China for the last 70 years has a way of doing that to you.

Well, we don't have the access you do, so thanks for that, but we do not even know what a fleet's PAO office is let alone the phone number, so be a little aware, ok?

VP Pence supposedly flew into Seoul recently. I don't think they expect nuclear activity, if that is true.

Vox keeps warning us, "Don't touch the poop." Some people just never listen.

China Foreign Minister: All three parties, North Korea, South Korea and the US, have direct responsibility - the US in particular, for its recent military drills and aircraft carrier deployment off Pyongyang’s coastline.

In other news: Supposedly, NK’s Ballistic Missile test failed, which was and is to be expected. Back to the drawing board. NK’s nuclear program still in full swing. U.S.A. Kabuki theater continues.

What does dont touch the poop mean?

People with more sense than I have won't reply to you.

glasoli

I live in the upper midwest.

As much as I despise the Left-coasties ... allowing them to get nuked is NOT in my long-term interest. An attack by outsiders against one of us is an attack against ALL of us. Do you really think the Kims despise Californians more than those of us in the heartland? Do you? Punk.

Refueling en route is not exactly high technology. The Pacific is littered with island chains that have reefs which are perfect for such an operation as part of a larger operation to get one of their pre-WW2-ish diesel-electrics off of our coast.

Trump has stated he does not put China on the list of currency manipulators. The Chinese had better give him something definitive on North Korea in return.

Meanwhile it would be a good idea for the Navy task force to go hunting NORK subs and sink every one it can find. So much for SLMB's.

Alkukis,

They just have to bang those drums of war, and you all line up behind the drummer, every time, never questioning the *news* of your imminent demise, nor the threat itself.

There were no WMD in Iraq. Iraq didn't carry out 9/11. But no problem, they were still on the list.

The Kims don't want to destroy America, they want to have a means of defence against your elite. They probably know that the plan is to assimilate every nation on the planet, but it's only their sovereignty at stake, so let's get 'em.

Empire of Chaos, such an apt description of the set-up in the US, and guys like you support it. So sad.

Not saying YOU should have called them. But freaking Infowars sure the hell could have. And should have, instead of throwing out bullshit for people to freak out over.
