A well-executed SJW hit

This is what happens to people who don't read SJWAL and fail to understand exactly what they are up against when they question the sacred Narrative. Rod Dreher chronicles something called "the Duke Divinity crisis":

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

On behalf of the Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Standing Committee, I strongly urge you to participate in the Racial Equity Institute Phase I Training planned for March 4 and 5. We have secured funding from the Provost to provide this training free to our community and we hope that this will be a first step in a longer process of working to ensure that DDS is an institution that is both equitable and anti-racist in its practices and culture. While a number of DDS faculty, staff, and students have been able to participate in REI training in recent years, we have never before hosted a training at DDS. Those who have participated in the training have described it as transformative, powerful, and life-changing. We recognize that it is a significant commitment of time; we also believe it will have great dividends for our community. Please find the registration link below. Details about room location will be announced soon.

Duke Divinity School will host a Racial Equity Institute Phase I Training on March 4 and 5, 2017, 8:30—5 pm both days. Participants should plan to attend both full days of training.

“Racism is a fierce, ever-present, challenging force, one which has structured the thinking, behavior, and actions of individuals and institutions since the beginning of U.S. history. To understand racism and effectively begin dismantling it requires an equally fierce, consistent, and committed effort” (REI). Phase I provides foundational training in understanding historical and institutional racism. It helps individuals and organizations begin to “proactively understand and address racism, both in their organization and in the community where the organization is working.” It is the first step in a longer process.

ALL Staff and Faculty are invited to register for this important event by which DDS can begin its own commitment to become an anti-racist institution.

Workshop capacity is 40 participants. Registration is FREE to DDS employees and students.

Snacks, breakfast, and light lunch will be provided. A 7:30 am liturgy will precede the Sunday training for those who wish to participate. Child care can be made available upon request.

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

I’m responding to Thea’s exhortation that we should attend the Racial Equity Institute Phase 1 Training scheduled for 4-5 March. In her message she made her ideological commitments clear. I’ll do the same, in the interests of free exchange.

I exhort you not to attend this training. Don’t lay waste your time by doing so. It’ll be, I predict with confidence, intellectually flaccid: there’ll be bromides, clichés, and amen-corner rah-rahs in plenty. When (if) it gets beyond that, its illiberal roots and totalitarian tendencies will show. Events of this sort are definitively anti-intellectual. (Re)trainings of intellectuals by bureaucrats and apparatchiks have a long and ignoble history; I hope you’ll keep that history in mind as you think about this instance.

We here at Duke Divinity have a mission. Such things as this training are at best a distraction from it and at worst inimical to it. Our mission is to thnk, read, write, and teach about the triune Lord of Christian confession. This is a hard thing. Each of us should be tense with the effort of it, thrumming like a tautly triple-woven steel thread with the work of it, consumed by the fire of it, ever eager for more of it. We have neither time nor resources to waste. This training is a waste. Please, ignore it. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Paul

Dear Colleagues,

First, I am looking forward to participating in the REI training, and I am proud that we are hosting it at Duke Divinity School. Thea, thank you for your part in helping us to offer this important event. I am deeply committed to increasing our school’s intellectual strength, spiritual vitality, and moral authority, and this training event will help with all three.

On another matter: It is certainly appropriate to use mass emails to share announcements or information that is helpful to the larger community, such as information about the REI training opportunity. It is inappropriate and unprofessional to use mass emails to make disparaging statements–including arguments ad hominem–in order to humiliate or undermine individual colleagues or groups of colleagues with whom we disagree. The use of mass emails to express racism, sexism, and other forms of bigotry is offensive and unacceptable, especially in a Christian institution.

As St. Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, regardless of how exquisite our gifts are, if we do not exercise them with love our words are just noise.

Sincerely,

Elaine A. Heath, Ph.D.

I didn't have to read any further than this to know how it was going to end.

According to a source close to Griffiths, he has resigned, effective at the end of the 2017-18 academic year.

No word if he apologized or if he simply resigned under pressure. Either way, another manufactured crisis, another noble conservative scalp for the SJWs. And as for the saccharine cuckiness of the virtue-signaling Christians both in the comments and at Duke, well, even the devil himself would want to spit them out of his mouth.

Amen! I totally agree! There is lots of literature now on white color blindness as the new racism.

The day they run such a test on me I'll turn out to be Hitler.

At some point (((they))) are going to fulfill their own prophecy and they will end not with one, not with two, but hundreds if not thousands of Hitlers.

I admire Paul. He went in on them, big time. In my opinion though, he failed to understand that he was dealing with "race jihadists" (the name "Thea" certainly caught my eye). The "race jihadists" are fanatics and will defend their sacred narrative to the last man. The moment Bro. Paul decided to fire his shots, he should have already had a response ready. It's easy to anticipate their "counter-rhetoric". Paul had no plan "B". This is not to say that he would have escaped unscathed. In all likelihood, the outcome would have been the same.

Paul probably should have devised an excuse as a means of opting out. Perhaps say "Oh dang, this training is 'hot to death!' Unfortunately, I've already committed to attending a [insert social justice event described with Marxist sounding terms] But peep this, hit me up when the next one drops. Word! In the meantime, could anyone who attends provide me with any literature from this enlightening training? Peace out family!"

Paul sincerely believed in free inquiry, and thought he could speak his mind, and be accepted for having a difference of opinion. 'Cuz that's what educated people do.

I don't know where he's been the last 25 years. These people are on a jihad, exactly. He should have figured that out by now.

My guess is he's retiring at the end of 2018, and told them as much.

Infogalactic sez:

A struggle session was a form of public humiliation and torture used by the Communist Party of China in the Mao Zedong era, particularly during the Cultural Revolution, to shape public opinion and to humiliate, persecute, or execute political rivals and class enemies.

In general, the victim of a struggle session was forced to admit to various crimes before a crowd of people who would verbally and physically abuse the victim until he or she confessed. Struggle sessions were often held at the workplace of the accused, but were sometimes conducted in sports stadiums where large crowds would gather if the target was famous enough.

I'm currently reading The Case of Comrade Tulayev by Victor Serge (set during the Stalinist purges), and the exchange above would not be out of place there (see in particular the letter from Elaine A. Heath Ph.D., Dean, which is at the link). The only difference between Heath's letter and Serge's fictional account of what happened in Russia in the 1930s is that Dean Heath doesn't have the power to sentence people to death for ideological impurity.

Also worthy of examination is the Racial Equity Institute, the organization contracted to deliver the above mentioned "Phase 1 Training".

As others have said I think this adds credence to the theory that he was already planning on retiring and thus he felt free to say whatever he wants. Unfortunately, while that mindset might shed some light on long standing problems, it usually doesn't involve very good strategy.

Hmmm. Not the natural response for me if I can't be fired.

Is he a Never Trumper? Wanted to "make his principled statement", then bow out for the "good of the community"?

Fight or don't fight. Why rush onto the battlefield and fall on your own sword, besides a martyr complex?

You seem to understand his choice. Could you elaborate? I don't get it.

Is it just that he didn't realize how hard they would come after him? Didn't realize the professional cost?

I don't understand your comment, just from my understanding of your perspective.

You say he resigned because they couldn't fire him. Don't you argue that they *always* try to get you to quit, so that they don't have to take responsibility for firing you? Even if they could fire him, they'd pressure him to quit first.

Blogger Chris Lutz May 09, 2017 7:12 AM

He should have immediately filed a complaint for a hostile work environment after Heath's reply to his email. He then should have immediately gotten a lawyer. You can see he is trying to be smart (not meeting with Heath alone, asking for a written description of the complaint, etc.) but doesn't seem to realize the whole university apparatus is designed to work against him.

As a technical matter (meaning, this man is not the man to join in a foxhole), can a tenured faculty effectively withdraw a resignation? What are the rules, if he resigned, then withdraws his resignation, does he still have protections of tenure, or do they 'accept' his resignation, and 'reject' his withdrawal of resignation? If Mr Griffiths or someone else in the same spot were to discover a backbone, some principles, and fight, could he?

Could we end up with a tenured professor offering "Alt-Right Principles and Practices" at State U because their 'rules' of tenure to protect radical marxists are turned against them?

I don't disagree, just going off what I have observed of that mindset in the past. It is usually highly entertaining, but ultimately ineffective. The person perpetrating it is thinking " I am going to wound my enemy and they can't do anything to me". If you are thinking like that then any minor wound is a victory. It usually doesn't involve planning to make a real, lasting, long term change.

The Alt-Right is not the only operative force in reversal. People everywhere are balking at the maniacal zealotry of this absurd deity-less religion.

As I note constantly, fiat money, (seemingly)limitless debt-fueled spending and a pervasive belief in unlimited resources are All The Same Thing with Equalist dogma.

They spring from the same deep mental processes, and they'll more-or-less reverse together.

Blogger dc.sunsets May 09, 2017 8:20 AM

My impulsive response is that this is yet another signal that this will come to violence because the zealots will never relent.

My reasoning mind suggests that when the turn does come, the zealots will either dissolve into the woodwork or shift their zealotry to other things, possibly even joining the Right (and pushing the Right too far, just as they do the Left.)

I hope I live a long life and the 40 or so years I'll have left will let me answer this question.

I think for some people, coming to the full realization that the people you work and socialize with don't just disagree with you, but really do hate you and want to destroy you for your beliefs, is so jarring that they just want to get out of there. They don't want to stay and fight, because they don't want to stay around those people anyway.

John Galt also stood up and said his piece and walked out. But as a brilliant engineer, he abandoned work that could have saved that company from its own destruction. A divinity professor can't harm his institution by leaving, except by allowing it to become a tiny bit more converged.

It's a shame because the dude went in hard against Thea and the REI. I'm a bit surprised at the tone; terms like "intellectually flaccid", "bromides", and "amen corner rah-rahs" were deliberately chosen. He could have easily softened his commentary and expressed measured reservations. Instead, he denounced the entire affair as "totalitarian" and referred to its core ideas as "anti-intellectual".

I am of the belief that he may have thought he gave a knockout blow but didn't understand that SJWs don't surrender kinda' like the Black Knight in "Monty Python's Holy Grail". The retort from Elaine Heath is typical of SJW responses: name calling and doubling down on groundless premises embedded in the larger narrative. I don't think dude was prepared for that. As many have said, he wasn't prepared to return fire and he may have gotten demoralized under the belief that his "knockout punch" didn't produce the intended result.

The dude got them good in my opinion because all Heath could do was to return fire with name calling and doubling down. She was stunned but SJW narcissism would have none it. She returned fire but was shooting blanks, and the dude mistook her bark for an actual bite. He probably had a bit of self doubt. He probably hesitated instead of reloading, and was eventually consumed by self doubt.

Griffiths needs to attend a seminar on trolling so he understand how it all went down. I can envision Ricky Vaughn, Vox, Sargon, and Stefan being akin to Shaolin Masters sending Griffith through the 36 Chambers armed only with a Twitter account and a Pepe avatar. Maybe someone should find the dude and send him a cryptic communication and get him on the road to self redemption

When intelligent people(actually intelligent, not just degree holders) speak the truth of Christ, it is naturally attractive.

I think they took more offence at his brave statement that these kinds of things are not consistent with Christianity.

He was tenured. He could have stood considerably more firm. That's why he resigned; they couldn't fire him.

Isn't that the whole point of academic tenure?

From Infogalactic:
Academic tenure's original purpose was to guarantee the right to academic freedom: it protects teachers and researchers when they dissent from prevailing opinion, openly disagree with authorities of any sort, or spend time on unfashionable topics.

I liked the guy's initial response, but flaking out when it got rough seems to me actually an example of the same "victim" mentality so beloved of the SJ hive-mind: showing ones virtue by losing in some kind of imaginary purity of character. If he's hoping to be canonized as a martyr, it seems doubtful.

And a female dean of a "divinity" school? Truly, "women ruin everything." I am increasingly convinced they simply haven't the capacity to understand the sort of subjects that are the proper focus of a "divinity" school. And the woman promoting this nonsense is a "Doctor of Philosophy"? Well, we can only hope that over-the-top insanity like this will start waking people up.

Women want total freedom, or rather – to call things by their names – total license. If you allow them to achieve complete equality with men, do you think they will be easier to live with? Not at all. Once they are your fellows, they will become your masters. (Marcus Porcius Cato (the Elder), 234-149 BCE)

This is all wonderfully stated. And, if I may add, women (not speaking for all, but many I have observed) have little inclination about conserving pillars of foundation. For instance, outside the Catholic church I attend in Idaho, there are always college age girls holding signs outside stating that , "Jesus was a refugee. You would not turn him away, right?" This is regards to resettling Syrians in our beautiful state. Also, you can find "Blue girl, Red State" bumper stickers all over the place here. These people are always pushing the latest SJW issue du jour, and whenever a camera is around will be protesting, or demonically chanting that issue. It seems that they support anything, I mean literally anything, (feminism, LBGTQ,Muslim immigration, Illegal immigration, an ever expanding government, etc..) that is the antithesis of Western Civ. You misunderstand on two counts, what we perceive and what we want.

We perceive that, as you note, SJWs lack self-restraint. Their gloating will cost them the moral level of the 4G cold civil war, leading to it going hot.

And they won't be able to stop themselves, even if they read this, because as midwits they are not systems thinkers and cannot see what is in potentia.

Even Nobel Prize winners extrapolate trends out forever, but it is only a trend 'til it ends, and whatever can't go on forever won't.

What we want is practically irrelevant. The systemic forces are like a tidal wave; you can ride it better or worse, but it would be an insane folly to imagine that you can turn it.

That's a very common misconception about tenure; people with tenure can be fired for a number of reasons, just not incompetence. The most likely event is that he was shown how he was going to be fired (and humiliated in public) unless he quit.

On the very few cases when there's no way to effect a firing, there's plenty of harassment that can get anyone to quit the job, no matter how cushy. And to be clear, I'm not talking administrative annoyances. Just lookup the treatment E.O. Wilson got after publishing "Sociobiology."

When someone with tenure or a Nobel Prize "quits," that quitting is usually as voluntary as paying taxes.

@55 "I think for some people, coming to the full realization that the people you work and socialize with...really do hate you...they don't want to stay and fight, because they don't want to stay around those people anyway."

Very likely. This is what happens when a moderate falls off the fence after years and years of going along to get along. He finally saw all the incense he had to burn. He beheld the shriveled remains of his soul. A little ember of hate began to glow within him. Maybe he started to hum, "One of these days I'm gonna' blow my top and that sucker, he's gonna' pay, Lord I can't wait to see their faces when I get the nerve to say, take this job and shove it, I ain't working here no more.." or maybe because he's an aging boomer he hums, "I try my best to be just like I am, but everybody wants you to be just like them, they say sing while you slave but I just get bored. I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more."

Maybe he saw the trajectory--that one day they'd hunt him down like a dog anyway, 'twas only a matter of time.

I've done this myself in a family relationship. One day it's like, "Whelp, I'm taking back a piece of me. Hand me some gasoline, hand me some matches." There's no real intent to change anything. You just want your say on the way out the door. You just want to incinerate the bridge.

Mao's self- incrimination sessions are modeled on the Yale Theological schools examination of conscience sessions that became popular during the 'perfectionists' time- early 1800s. They sent missionaries to China for one hundred years, all of them soaked in these practices. Mao's wife was educated by missionaries.
Mao's innovation was to take this obscure religious practice and apply it wholesale to an entire country in political practice.

At the conclusion of the conference, a tribute to Comrade Stalin was called for. Of course, everyone stood up (just as everyone had leaped to his feet during the conference at every mention of his name). … For three minutes, four minutes, five minutes, the stormy applause, rising to an ovation, continued. But palms were getting sore and raised arms were already aching. … However, who would dare to be the first to stop? … After all, NKVD men were standing in the hall applauding and watching to see who would quit first! And in the obscure, small hall, unknown to the leader, the applause went on - six, seven, eight minutes! … They couldn’t stop now till they collapsed with heart attacks! …

The director of the local paper factory, an independent and strong-minded man, stood with the presidium. Aware of all the falsity and all the impossibility of the situation, he still kept on applauding! Nine minutes! Ten! In anguish he watched the secretary of the District Party Committee, but the latter dared not stop. Insanity! To the last man! With make-believe enthusiasm on their faces, looking at each other with faint hope, the district leaders were just going to go on and on applauding till they fell where they stood, till they were carried out of the hall on stretchers! Then, after eleven minutes, the director of the paper factory assumed a businesslike expression and sat down in his seat. And, oh, a miracle took place! Where had the universal, uninhibited, indescribable enthusiasm gone? To a man, everyone else stopped dead and sat down. They had been saved!
… That same night the factory director was arrested. They easily pasted ten years on him on the pretext of something quite different. But after he had signed Form 206, the final document of the interrogation, his interrogator reminded him: "Don’t ever be the first to stop applauding."

There was an email that went out identifying the height, gender, and race of the person (tall black man). Of course it all exploded as a giant email exchange. However, once all the blacks choose tribe over reason, many of the lefty professors told them to pound sand. There were a few funny email exchanges of lefty professors telling the diversity coordinator she was basically retarded. The dean eventually sent out the consolatory email saying the crazy people had some good points and maybe we all needed diversity training, which would be optional.

It is about ensuring and maintaining ideological control ov er the public values of the institution.

"Modern" Churches have all clearly opted for SJW values as their highest truth values - when Biblical and SJW values conflict(as they must) their ostensible "Christianity" gives way to their REAL highest values.

It has always struck me that the theological rationale of contemporary "updated" churches tends to boil down to - "if Jesus came back today he'd be just like me" (an utterly conventional post-Christian progressive circa 2017)

Hilarious. And so breath-taking in its narcissism.

Nevertheless, just like Islamic theocrats, SJW's DEMAND SUBMISSION FROM NON_BELIEVERS as well as members of the religion. This is why SJW's feel no shame in literally legislating their personal values and using state power to enforce them.
