Infogalactic Phase Two

This is the current state of Infogalactic development and the updated Road Map. Phase One is complete and we are now officially in Phase Two.

Phase One

FUND LEVEL COMPLETE

Image load speed improvement - COMPLETE
Search time speed improvement - COMPLETE (needs additional improvement)
Integration with Brave browser - COMPLETE
Operational ad server - COMPLETE
Additional administration and editing levels - COMPLETE

PHASE ONE COMPLETE

The reason we're not putting more time and effort into tweaking the performance is that doing so would involve spending more time refining the Wikimedia engine that we're in the process of replacing anyhow. So, now that the site is reasonably functional, we prefer to focus our development efforts on the new engine since that will provide both increased performance as well as the ability to incorporate the planned new features.

Phase Two

IN PROGRESS

DONTPANIC engine
Sub-sites wikimedia - COMPLETE
Sub-sites DONTPANIC
Ad server DONTPANIC
Dynamic page updates - COMPLETE
Improved Database categories
Relativity, Reliability, and Notability 1.0 algorithms

New members of the Burn Unit, please note that an email will be going out soon telling you how you can acquire your Burn Unit t-shirts. They've proven to be popular enough that we're looking into making Burn Unit athletic jackets and baseball caps available as well.

Nice to see some areas complete in Phase 2. Looking forward to the jackets!

This is good.

Great news.

Burn Unit Caps will Rock. I'm buying. Jacket too.

I find when I do searches, normally the Wikipedia entry is around #2. The nice part is it then gives me the same name structure and I put it over in IG. Working well, especially now that Forkbot is active.

15s of extra work to not have to deal with the SJW-infested site is quite nice.

The one thing that will simply take time is getting information into the search system. The baseline Wikimedia one is SO bad (as anyone that's seen low-line version of it working on other websites), but the large database of previous searches lets them get away with never having really improved it.

The baseline Wikimedia one is SO bad (as anyone that's seen low-line version of it working on other websites), but the large database of previous searches lets them get away with never having really improved it.

Pretty much everything they do is inefficient to the point of being brain-damaged, but since they have what amounts to infinite resources to throw at covering up for those inefficiencies, it works for them.

That's why we won't consider this actual competition for them until we get DONTPANIC going and can kill them on features. It would be ruinously expensive and/or a huge waste of time to try to match data and performance on such outmoded technology. As I have repeatedly warned, this is a long march.

But it's shorter than it was six months ago.

There will be, I hope, full eBooks or multiple volumes of same, detailing the history of Alt...whichever, including Info G, Gab, etc. Those will be required reading/possession.

@6 VD

Vanilla copies of the Wikimedia engine have that annoying problem where their baseline search function is little more than a letter match. Any time I ever come across one, I'm always just floored by how bad it is. Like 1998-level unacceptable. But approaching 2 decades of search data with even the most basic sorting algo at least makes things work.

I always got the impression it was "bad", even from the early, early days, but I never thought they'd basically never improve it. Their corporate customers are a huge vulnerability.

hehe :)

This is good news, VD ever thought about kick starting a search engine?

Blogger VD May 06, 2017 8:33 AM

ever thought about kick starting a search engine?

What would be the point? There is presumably a reason why Duck Duck Go and all the others have failed to gain any significant traction.

Besides, I'm just a little busy these days. If we ever do one, it will probably grow organically out of our Infogalactic development.

Anonymous TS May 06, 2017 8:59 AM

Oops meant web browser, though cornering both would be ideal.

Blogger VD May 06, 2017 9:08 AM

No, we support and work with Brave.

Anonymous Looking Glass May 06, 2017 9:14 AM

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/duckduckgo.com

DuckDuckGo has been making significant gains, especially every time there is a hacking scandal. I'm having trouble finding information, but realize it took Google until fairly recently to overtake Yahoo in actual pageviews. Yahoo's search was actually more popular than Google's for a very, very long time. Yahoo, being the terribly run company it always has been, had switched to using Google at some point years ago, but it was still run through Yahoo.

Habits take a long time to change, especially for something as highly integrated as search functions.

Oh, Brave just recently updated to work with LastPass & Dashlane. That's a big, big deal. I might start moving over to it as my semi-primary browser now.

VD

Thanks. I haven't used, or linked to, Wikipedia for six months. Like television (15 years), I've never looked back. Very happy about Forkbot's success, and yours.

Anonymous Leonidas May 06, 2017 9:17 AM

Will the new infogalactic engine be available open source (or paid, even) the way mediawiki is? I use mediawiki on a site now, but I'd dearly love to switch.

Blogger Resident Moron™ May 06, 2017 9:23 AM

Grats on the progress update.

Joined the burn unit yesterday. Looking forward to the jacket. "Fired up"

Anonymous Looking Glass May 06, 2017 9:35 AM

@15 Leonidas

I wasn't in on the formation, but my assumption, from a few comments, is the intended funding mechanism is to sell a significantly better replacement of the Mediawiki engine. Vox referenced some large Insurers with absolutely huge internal Wikis. The Valley's "disruptives" never thought it would happen to them.

@16 Resident Moron™

Seriously, make sure to get a shirt. The crypto.fashion shirts are really, really nice. And the BurnUnit one looks awesome.

DONTPANIC?

Anonymous Looking Glass May 06, 2017 9:58 AM

Okay, there might be a second-level joke to DONTPANIC that I didn't get. I was trying to find something else, and I came across a link to the Mortal Kombat: Annihilation soundtrack.

Psykosonik - Panik Control

Well played, Vox, well played. (It's also extremely good.)

As IG gains in popularity, and people understand the value of the planned preference filters, the SJWs will have no choice but to use it. A trusted source to justify your world view. People, businesses and politicians could even display their filter preferences on social media, perhaps eventually translating to real world freedom of association.

Blogger Dave May 06, 2017 10:21 AM

I wanna see some yuuge turbos on that engine.

Hats? YES preferably the metal sleeve adjustment, no five panel or dad caps.

Xapian is an excellent and damn fast search engine backend, if you need one.

Blogger Resident Moron™ May 06, 2017 10:59 AM

@Looking Glass

I surely will.

Only had enough in my discretionary spending last month for a t-shirt so I bought the Dark Triad Man one.

Also made last payment of a long series so knew there'd be more leeway this month. Hence joining the burn unit. Waiting for the email so I can order the burn unit tee.

@Vox

You're very welcome. It's a great thing you're doing and I'm glad to be able to support it. Courage is contagious.

VD, this page needs updating:
"Phase One has already been fully funded and will be completed before the end of 2016."

http://infogalactic.com/info/Infogalactic:Donations

You could use some better marketing, to get more donations. You could also use making them tax-deductible, with a separate U.S. non-profit, and another for Europe. I assume you don't need a private corp's legal benefits. And this charity incorporation is a lot of legal work... for whomever you hire to do it. So, it's really an investment. It would increase donations, I think.

Also, please prioritize the Quickfund feature. I want to make specific donations, not general ones. It's a millenial thing, I don't know why. Maybe it's how we were raised, with too many options and artificially high control levels. For some reason, it's much more exciting to have small, easier funding goals to support, such as a 'IG topic of the month' feature, like developing microbio pages in May, then sci-fi pages in June. Is this a good idea?

Anonymous Rabbit May 06, 2017 8:47 PM

Well, supposin' this wern't no charity, then wut? Didja ever think o'that?

Blogger Snidely Whiplash May 06, 2017 9:48 PM

What you really need, Vox, is for someone here to come in, with no background, no idea of your aims or future plans and no clue about why previous efforts have failed, to tell you how to organize your efforts and which particular overseers you need wielding the lash.

Anonymous Rocklea 4-3-6 (in training) May 07, 2017 12:16 AM

I think, barely in comparison, sometimes effecively, often not. 4gw in motion.

"He's 4-3-6"

Huh?; grrr; oh; ok. Several hours, and probably still wrong, but so what? What takes some a second, takes me longer, or never. It is what it is. Kind of liberating.

Blogger Dane Prywatne May 08, 2017 11:19 AM

Are you planning multilanguage support?

Anonymous WaterBoy May 08, 2017 1:51 PM

Looking Glass @21: "Okay, there might be a second-level joke to DONTPANIC that I didn't get. "

Infogalactic is your friend:

"In the series, Don't Panic is a phrase on the cover of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The novel explains that this was partly because the device "looked insanely complicated" to operate, and partly to keep intergalactic travellers from panicking. It is said that despite its many glaring (and occasionally fatal) inaccuracies, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy itself has outsold the Encyclopedia Galactica because it is slightly cheaper, and because it has the words "DON'T PANIC" in large, friendly letters on the cover."

Infogalactic, if I have my assumptions correct, is a riff on Encyclopedia Galactica. DONTPANIC comes from that same milieu.
