Marvel cancels Black Panther & the Crew

Not that it was necessary at this point, but here is yet another example of how selling to SJWs is a recipe for failure:
When Ta-Nehisi Coates and Yona Harvey’s Black Panther & The Crew launched earlier this year, it proved that big publishers like Marvel can, in fact, still tell timely stories about real world issues, like how police brutality devastates black communities. But now, after a mere two issues, Marvel has cancelled the series.

In this incarnation of the crew, Black Panther, Storm, Luke Cage, and Misty Knight gather in Harlem to investigate the murder of Ezra Keith, a civil rights activist who mysteriously died while in police custody. With lines drawn between Harlem’s residents and the police seemingly trying to cover up Keith’s death, The Crew find themselves fighting to maintain the peace while also serving justice, and learning about the unknown history of other black heroes who protected New York during the Civil Rights Movement.

Speaking to The Verge, Coates explained that Marvel chose to end The Crew due to low sales numbers, and that its current story arc would come to a close later this year in its sixth and final issue.
I wish there was an efficient way to bet against things like Black Lives Matter Superhero Comic and so forth. It will be interesting to see how well Alt-Hero fares once we're ready to launch the crowdfunding campaign on an Alt-Tech alternative to Kickstarter.

Question of the day: who is more intellectually overrated by the media, Ta-Nehisi Coates or Neil deGrasse Tyson?

Even in comic book format, there are only a handful of people on the planet capable of appreciating the staggering genius of Ta-Nehisi Coates. And given that that small handful is irredeemably racist, sales were inevitably low. Sad!

Tyson by far. They act like hes a black Newton. If you listen to him speak about anything outside of astrophysics--such as metaphysics or logic--its clear hes just trying to sound authoritative in order to be convincing even though he has little grasp on the subject. Listened to him try to explain to Joe Rogan the patently absurd concept that 'some infinities are larger than other infinities' and he made a mess of the whole thing. He fucked up the Heisenberg priniciple too by confusing it with the Observer effect; you'd think any competent astrophysicist would know better.

Also, in a discussion I was having with someone else (since it relates to this), there's a big market for "Explain things to the MPAI population that thinks themselves smart". Black Science Guy is the perfect example of it.

Though how much he actually acts like The Sphinx from Mystery Men is pretty important.

NDT by a very very long shot. Teh Genius owns his lack of education; NDT pretends he's an astrophysicist, and has cowed the public into completely overlooking the fact that he failed out of UT.

Blogger SteelPalm May 15, 2017 8:36 AM

As a scientist myself, I will go against the grain and pick with Coates.

The guy is a complete idiot with zero intellectual achievement.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson, while hilariously overrated by virtue-signaling fools with no understanding of science, is at least a scientist.

Not an accomplished or significant scientist, true, but an actual, genuine scientist.

By contrast, someone like Bill Nye is not a scientist at all.

So NDT is only the second-most overrated person in the scientific field, let alone the most overrated "black intellectual".

Anonymous noxious windy May 15, 2017 8:36 AM

TNC is far more overrated. Tyson is a clown and is played for laughs. Nothing about him is particularly interesting as he is government black stock. He would be working the line at a DMV somewhere if it wasn't for "science." Coates' writing shows that he has a few brain cells (or a ghostwriter) but there's no real punch line, just simmering resentment for white people. I'm sorry, "those who believe themselves to be white." Reading his columns leads me to believe that TNC (and the goons behind VerySmartBrothas, NegusWhoRead, etc.) believes himself to be both correct and a clever wordsmith, as he is sold to the prog hordes by the press. Tyson carries none of the false gravitas afforded to Coates and his ideas aren't directly in support of violence...yet.

Anonymous Darth Dharmakīrti May 15, 2017 8:37 AM

. If you listen to him speak about anything outside of astrophysics

The dude is like 27th author on half a dozen papers, sole author of just one single paper, and hasn't published anything since grad school.

His "contributions" to astrophysics are just as vapid and contentless as the rest of his oeuvre

Anonymous Stephen J. May 15, 2017 8:38 AM

I'd say Coates. Tyson gets more exposure but he actually is pretty competent in a respectably difficult skill (it's when he talks about anything outside astronomy that he goes wrong). Coates gets more public reverence than any mere essayist should solely because of his background and politics.

Anonymous Darth Dharmakīrti May 15, 2017 8:38 AM

Neil DeGrasse Tyson, while hilariously overrated by virtue-signaling fools with no understanding of science, is at least a scientist.

@22

How is he a scientist? What would you call someone that manages a museum in his hometown, and has published absolutely nothing since grad school 20 years ago?

Because NDT actually did his physics undergrad at Harvard in 1980, which was absolutely no joke back then, and later got his PhD in astro at Columbia, which isn't top-tier, but perfectly respectable.

His lack of significant research simply makes NDT an unaccomplished, insignificant scientist, a quality he shares with at least 90% of the world's scientists.

You're confusing "scientist" with "good/accomplished scientist".

Blogger SteelPalm May 15, 2017 8:48 AM

However, I might well agree that NDT is more insufferable than Coates, as are the idiot white SJWs who worship him.

Anonymous Looking Glass May 15, 2017 8:51 AM

This could get very interesting. It's going to come down to how you rate effects & areas of activity. NDT has far more cultural cachet, but Coates is more segmented.

In relative terms, NDT at least finished his degree and worked in the field. Coates has been massively over-promoted because he filled a niche. It's an interesting dynamic for the observer.

I wasn't comparing their college degrees. I was giving my opinion on which one was more intellectually overrated by the media.

Bill Nye is elevated to a level by the media so they can appeal to his artificial authority.

Tyson, on the other hand, is more of a "HEY! We found a black guy that got a science degree, therefor all White people are racist" level of narrative.

I was in B&N this weekend and happened on an end cap display of yet another attempt by DC to reboot their universe. I picked up Deathstroke out of curiosity and on the second page I was being told "no one cares when people are killed in black countries" followed by an African warlord saying that he's Christian and killing Muslims so the West supports him.

We're then treated to a flashback of Deathstroke being the "worst father imaginable" to his two sons because he's not coddling them.

This preachy bullshit is not what people who enjoy comics want to read. There's plenty of real world in the real world. We want heroes being hrroic, damnit, plus the occasional anti-hero to give perspective for real heroes.

Darth Dharmakīrti: NDT pretends he's an astrophysicist, and has cowed the public into completely overlooking the fact that he failed out of UT.

I don't think they're cowed so much as unaware. I've been at UT for 16 years, and for most of that time didn't know NdT had been a grad student here.

Years later, when asked to reflect on NdT's time at UT, some of the faculty said they knew he wasn't going to be a research superstar. Not everyone who gets a PhD is interested in research, which is why many grads go on to teaching or industry. It's tough bouncing back from a failure, so it's commendable that NdT got his act together and finished at Columbia.

I dunno if NdT can be held entirely responsible for the cult of personality that’s grown up around him. Atheist science-worshippers will erect their gods wherever they can find them. What he can be faulted for is a lack of humility about his limitations. There's nothing wrong with being a science popularizer — it’s a noble calling — but the problem with NdT is that he says astoundingly stupid things when he ventures outside of astrophysics. He’s not alone in this. Stephen Hawking is a true scientist who has made valuable contributions to the field, and also manages to say astoundingly stupid things when he ventures outside of physics.

Black Panther and the Crew is not TNC' signature series which Marvel launched to great fanfare.

It is the reincarnation of a 14-year old team book of D-list fringe supporting characters that originally only ran 7 issues in 2003.

The original was pitched by arguably one of Marvel's best editors and star writers - the relatively oddball Jim Owsley-turned-Christopher Priest. He started in 1978 and was responsible for all of the good Conan stories. And hit it big on some good Spider-man runs. He went on to do a ton of Marvel, DC, and Valiant stuff.

He's black and responsible for much of Marvel's good street stuff: original Falcon mini-series. All of the original good Iron Fist stories. And he owned Black Panther in 90s-00s.

His original pitch for The Crew:
"So I find myself having to say, more than what The Crew is, what The Crew is not. The Crew is not The Black Avengers. The Crew is not "A Ghetto Book". The Crew is not even remotely about race. Race is never even mentioned in The Crew. It is a complete non-issue."

It's clear Marvel has lost its way.

A reboot of the Crew was always a shaky proposition. A reboot of The Crew focusing solely on race would be like Marvel doing somethibg stupid like specifically replacing Captain America with a black guy and making the original a nazi.

The general plot idea (corrupt police) and heroes could easily be made intriguing and entertaining. Instead is is screechy preachy. The 70's had "black exploitation films". This is a comic comic version.

@59 " Sweden of all places, bans mandatory vaccinations:"

That likely was done due to negative publicity around vaccines as a result of a bunch of kids developing narcolepsy after being vaccinated for swine flue. That campaign was quite pushy and when the epidemic turned out to be nothing the contrast between children getting a debilitating condition for being vaccinated against a fairly harmless disease caused quite an uproar.

Dunno what the "Sweden of all places"-bit is based on. Outrage against government overreach isn't anything unusual or weird in Sweden. Not strange as we've had so much of it.

My biggest moment of WTF was when his dorky CGI ship goes to Titan, and we get several minutes of Tyson staring off stage at nothing in front of a green screen effect. I sat there thinking about how we had actual pictures of Titan's surface now. Why not show those? Why not go visit the team that made the Huygens lander happen? They want to encourage people to go into STEM, show show real people doing STEM work and accomplishing kickass things. The whole thing came off as a vanity project.

Quantum effects are important in astrophysics. That said, not every astro/physicist has a good grasp of the more subtle details. Even Heisenberg himself confused the observer effect with the HUP. But if you're a popularizer of science, you should be up on these things. And that comment about infinities... oof.

Regarding the status of Neil deGasse Tyson, to me as an active research scientist it pretty clear from his biography: He trained to become a scientist from 1978 to 1991, when he finished his PhD. He was actually working as a research scientist for five years afterwards, the typical post-doc period. Ever since then, after he took over the planetarium, his work revolves around the teaching of popular science. So while he might be a scientist in my eyes, he has been away from the hot edge of science for over 20 years. His views are probably nearly as outdated as the stuff in the school books.

We should just let Marvel comics die as a publisher. They haven't done anything great in years. This new stuff is just embarrassing. Go back and read the originals (or reprints) from the decades when they produced quality work that didn't attack their loyal readers. Excelsior!

Blogger L' Aristokrato May 15, 2017 11:58 AM

The problem is that Marvel and DC(which is just as bad) can't die.

They don't exist in a state where they have to operate as an actual business, or deal with the consequences of their bad decisions; Because they can be perpetually bailed out by their respective parent companies(Disney and Time Warner).
As such there's currently no incentive, much less pressure, for even trying to write anything remotely decent.

@74 and @78 re infinity

The issue is one of definition essentially. The mathematician uses a definition of infinity as a limitless function...an unbounded limit. If thats the definition we use then yes there can be different orders of cardinality between infinities...one infinity 'fills up' faster than the other.

But what if we think more in terms of a set with an infinite number of members...an actual or completed infinity rather than a limitless function. The problem with using functions to define infinity is that at every point every function always equals a finite number. How then could it be infinite? We certainly can't count to infinity; no matter what number you come up with, adding +1 to it doesn't equal infinity.

This is where Zeno's paradoxes would all fail. He'd claim that since we can take any finite distance and can divide it indefinitely then there must be an infinite number of distances within any finite distance, and thus motion is an illusion. Of course this is false, the reason being is that no matter how many times we divide a finite distance, we are still left with a finite number of distances. Even though there is no limit to the number of times we can make a division, and theres no limit to the number of distances we can create, at no point have we reached a non-finite number of distances. (and we forever remain infinitely far away from doing so.)

But if we think of an infinite set as one that actually contains an amount of members that is not denumerable, then there is no function that can possibly correspond to such an infinity. (The result of a function is always finite and thus numerable.) And if this is what we mean when we say infinite, then it is just a misapplication of language to say that one infinity is larger than another. For infinity would be beyond measure, and using the language of measurements such as larger and smaller becomes meaningless.

@91 Infinity isn't just a number we can use like any other. By plugging it into a formula for volume we reach an absurd result, namely that an infinitely large volume is smaller than another volume. By definition a volume of infinite size could contain another volume of any size and still have an infinite amount of volume remaining; it would contain all the volume of the entire universe and every other universe real and imagined.

If I take a cylinder of 1 inch diameter and zero length does it contain less volume than a cylinder with 1 meter diameter and zero length? Are some zero's smaller than others?

@96 If you're talking about the aspects of discrete math that deal with Cantor's set theory relative to infinite sets, Id again say that its just playing with functions--its just rules for creating infinite extensions. But a set with infinite members is not the result of an infinite extension, nor can an infinite extension ever create a set with infinite members. Apples and oranges. Or more precisely, limitless functions and sets with non-enumberable members.

The number of positive integers is infinite.
The number of negative integers is infinite
The number of positive real numbers is infinite
(Number of p-pints)/(number of n-pints)=1
(Number of p-reals)/((number of ints)=infinite

The number of deals more infinite than the number of integers. From 0 to 1 there are 0, 1, or 2 integers, depending on how you count, but an infinite number of reals.

@106 Dirk, you just did exactly what I said. You made a bunch of limitless functions. If I take the limit of x to infinity of f(x), then it approaches infinity. But at no point does the function ever equal infinity, for x is always and will always be a finite number. And if I do it for f(x+1) or f(x2) or any other function it remains the same...the function always is a finite number no matter how far down the list of numbers we take x. And I can apply this to every other set of numbers countable and uncountable but at no point do any of these functions ever reach an actual infinity...they fill up endlessly but are never filled. Limitless but finite does not equal infinite.

It's really funny when someone who is patently less smart than the person they're criticizing says their target is stupid.

It's easy to prove that some infinities are larger than other infinities.  Take the integers.  They're infinite, but countable.  How about the rational numbers?  Those are the same magnitude as the integers, because you can assign each rational number to an integer and count them the same way.  (Don't believe me?  Consider an infinite Cartesian grid where each crossing of integral X and Y values has the value of the Y over the X.  Now start at (0, 1) and go counter-clockwise in a spiral, assigning each fraction an integer as you go.  You can omit 0 as a denominator if you like.)

Real numbers are uncountable; you cannot assign an integer to each one as there are infinitely many of them between any two arbitrarily close values.  They are a BIGGER infinite set than the integers.

And that is where my knowledge of esoteric mathematics gives out.  Calculus, please!

Blogger OGRE May 15, 2017 3:23 PM

@112 Sort of like listening to a mathematician trying to explain metaphysics using numbers...

None of those examples are actually infinite. Limitless, yes, but still finite. Approaching infinity, yes, but still finite. I'm not disagreeing that some of these functions are larger than others; I disagree that any of these ever actually equal infinity.

If I start walking on the surface of a sphere I can walk in any direction indefinitely. How many steps can I take? I will never reach an end, but I never take an infinite number of steps. The number of steps I can take is limitless but is always finite. If my much smaller friend who has to take two steps for every one step I take walks beside me, travelling the same speed, he takes more steps than I do, but he never takes an infinite number of steps either. And no matter how long either of us walks we can never take one more step to reach an infinite number of steps.

My point is that--just as with Tyson and Rogan--we are discussing two different things here. The potential infinities of mathematics (which are *cough* infinitely useful in application) and the actual infinities of metaphysics. The mathematical functions always result in potential infinities as the functions can only approach infinity but never reach it; one simply can not define any actual infinity by way of a mathematical function.

Infinities are esoteric and interesting. When I learned there were three sets of infinity, number of rational numbers, number of all numbers, and number of curves on a plane. Don't know if a fourth has been added. Interesting subject to mathematicians, easily provable in math, but, AFAIK, no actual real world implications. So us non-mathematicians don't need to worry about it.

And while you described what you think is writing on one side, if you take that pen and start at one writing sample, you get to the other without crossing an edge, so the demonstration shows you're on the same side. A Mobius strip is real, with one side. Like a torus, it doesn't obey the 4 color map theorem. A torus can require 7 colors, a Mobius strip 6. Just an odd thought here that is probably not true in most cases. If management is secure and gets issued stock options, one way to make a bundle of money is to jerk up the company for a while, get the options when the stock price is low, and then straighten things out. But then who is to say, maybe this happens more than we know.

An example of this sort of thing that I watched happen first hand is Harley Davidson. They let motorcycle quality fall off, the management did a leverage buyout, and post buyout combined better quality control with numerous custom models that sold very well among us baby boomers.
