RIP Chris Cornell

The lead singer of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave has died at 52:
Chris Cornell, lead singer of American hard rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, has died aged 52. In a statement to the Associated Press, his representative, Brian Bumbery, said Cornell died on Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death “sudden and unexpected” and said his wife and family were shocked. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause, and asked for privacy.

Cornell had been touring with Soundgarden, and was tweeting upbeat messages about a sold-out concert the band played in Detroit just hours before his death.
I never met him, but our band was scheduled to play on the second stage after Temple of the Dog at the Chicago Lollapalooza in 1992. Our singer got lost, so we didn't play, but it was a great day for music in the sun, with Soundgarden and Pearl Jam playing the main stage prior to Ministry and the Chili Peppers.

But when I think of Chris Cornell and Soundgarden, I think mostly of playing Road Rash on the 3DO. What a perfect soundtrack for that game!

how terrible. man those days when soundgarden and nirvana and STP ruled were some of the best times of my life.

Blogger Xmas May 18, 2017 8:02 AM

I'm thinking fentanyl too. Maybe even accidental contact.

I remember hearing Hunger Strike for the first time on the radio. It was a major shift, something genuinely new. RIP.

Blogger YIH May 18, 2017 8:10 AM

@4
When that was announced I quipped ''$5 says OD''.
A smidgen of Fentanyl is all it takes.

Rusty Cage, awsome.
I bought the triple LP Telephantasm a few years back, it will get some play today.

That what is suspected in Prince's demise. Many have died not knowing that it was included their drug experience.

Audioslave is going to get heavy rotation today in my truck.

Anonymous David-093 May 18, 2017 8:29 AM

Well this sucks.

Blogger Midnight Avenue J May 18, 2017 8:38 AM

OD was my first reaction. He had drug problems, in and out of rehab.

Soundtrack of my high school years was basically the Lollapalooza '92 lineup. RIP.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan May 18, 2017 8:46 AM

Now does he get included in the stats of "White Death?"

I doubt it. All his friends are brown and red.

Cornell, Cobain, Weiland, Staley. Four of the big five of Grunge/Alt Rock singers are now dead. That leaves the only one who I can't stand even for a second still alive in Eddie Vedder. It figures.

Blogger YIH May 18, 2017 9:38 AM

Now it's being reported as a possible suicide.
Maybe not needle russian roulette.

Lololol! That made my day Vox.

Hopefully he's saying hello to heaven.

I didn't like his band's music, but the man's voice was amazing.

I worked at Best Buy a long time ago across from the video game dept and they had a 3do set up with Road Rash on an endless demo loop. Agree with Vox that Soundgarden was an awesome
Soundtrack for that game but I can't ever hear Outshined without feeling the itch to offer a warranty on that Whilpool dryer.

Also RIP Robert Miles.

Different genre, but probably as familiar.

I saw him in 2001. Excellent performer. Sad stuff.

Blogger OGRE May 18, 2017 10:28 AM

@18 my thoughts exactly. we're not even 50 and all our musicians are dying off already

Blogger DAMN SON May 18, 2017 10:42 AM

Five of five. Andy Wood was as formative to grunge as anyone and he died in 1990.

I still listen to the dream version of "children" from time to time. Fantastic melodic instrumental.

RIP, big disappointment, was finally gonna see soundgarden live, not to be

Funny how all the 80's party rockers tend to be still alive and the younger grunge types are dead. Still, Cornell was the best of them. RIP.

Anonymous fop May 18, 2017 11:57 AM

That video for Black Hole Sun still creeps me out.

Blogger Dave May 18, 2017 12:15 PM

Incredible voice and songwriter. Wore out more than a few of his CDs back in the day. RIP.

Blogger Sam Spade May 18, 2017 1:23 PM

Soundgarden is my favorite band from Seattle. So much talent in the songwriting, and creativity and power in the performance.

Superunknown is their masterpiece, but Down on the upside is very underrated with killer tracks and songwriting complexity and harmonic perfection you don't see anymore on mainstream rock.

Cornell is a fucking legend, RIP.

Anonymous DeeJay May 18, 2017 1:29 PM

Great musician. Of course, his output with Soundgarden speaks for itself, but Cornell's solo work was great, too: he wrote one of the best James Bond themes in decades. Plus, wasn't it one of his conditions when Audioslave was formed, that the Rage bandmembers put a lid on their political BS? Chris was all about the songcraft.

Blogger YIH May 18, 2017 1:57 PM

His death at 52 was ruled a suicide by hanging, the Wayne County, Michigan medical examiner said Thursday.

Blogger Retrenched May 18, 2017 1:59 PM

Road Rash, now that was a great game. I had it for the Playstation myself. Good soundtrack overall but the Soundgarden songs were surely the best on there.

RIP.

Drugs are bad.

Blogger Matt May 18, 2017 4:21 PM

Wow he killed himself.

Blogger Stg58/Animal Mother May 18, 2017 5:23 PM

Sucks even worse that he killed himself
The Audioslave albums are fucking genius.

Legendary. And yet that Amy Schumer cunt and The Dunham Horror still plague us...

well, yeah.

they don't have any standards.

Legacy media says Cornell hung himself; a grim death if true. You'd think he would OD on smack like a proper rock star. Always considered him a pretty boy caterwauling turgid, bombastic, pretentious, meaningless lyrics. Albeit I haven't heard a lot of his oeuvre, never saw him perform live and don't wish to rain on the elegiac parade of those genuinely moved by his work. Salūs

hanging yourself has been a proper rock star death ever since Michael Hutchence.

Anonymous MongoJimmy May 18, 2017 6:26 PM

Too grisly. Lacks the romantic gentle slide into oblivion.

Did you ever play Detroit on tour in the early 90's? St. Andrews Hall? If so we met. I was a bouncer and local roadie at that place and did a lot of stage work.

What happened to the other post about CC?

Blogger frigger611 May 18, 2017 11:27 PM

RIP. My favorite singer, a rarity. A great modern poet.

"I am The Highway" is real art. Whaddyall think? Here is a guy begging you not to think of him as a hero, he wants to recede into the background.

"I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night"

Give it a listen, most worthwhile.

Blogger tublecane May 18, 2017 11:57 PM

I listened to Superunknown about a billion times back in the day. Not when it came out ('94?), but a little later. I wish it was less dark now, but I found its mood comfortable when I was an angry teenager.

Soundgarden was my favorite Seattle alt-rock band. I think of them more as heavy metal than grunge, which is in line with my taste.

I see you try
I see you fail
Some things will never change
...
Bow down, bow down
Bow down, live your life.

In the Soungarden
At the Temple of the Dog
We lay to rest this Audioslave
