SJWs ruin everything

Even classic chick flicks like Dirty Dancing:
The remake departed from the original in several significant ways. Most of the Dirty Dancing’s original themes — a hypocritical upper crust, social and class tensions, and frigid family dynamics — were watered down with heartwarming family reconciliations, interracial friendships, and empowered girls being empowered together.
Of course, they kept abortion sub-plot. Frankly, I'm only surprised that they didn't have Baby get pregnant by Johnny, then have her father perform the abortion after telling her how proud he is of her decision to not ruin her college prospects by having the baby and marrying Johnny.

The fact that Vox.com of all places ran the line "and empowered girls being empowered together" suggests that even the nominally left are getting tired of checklist writing.

Blogger Heian-kyo Dreams May 26, 2017 11:08 AM

From the article: "Despite featuring choreography from Hamilton’s Andy Blankenbuehler, the remake’s dancing in general failed to impress."

Oh, well there you go.

I'm surprised they didn't make Baby gay. "Nobody puts Baby in a closet"

Blogger swiftfoxmark2 May 26, 2017 11:10 AM

Sounds about right for modern Hollywood. The Academy Award for Best Picture this year was about a gay, black drug dealer. But after all that complaining from Will Smith and others last year, not a peep from them this year.

No originality in Hollywood. The only movies worth watching in theaters are superhero flicks, or American kaiju flicks (Kong Skull Island was really good).

Blogger Timmy3 May 26, 2017 11:12 AM

Couldn't be a worse SJW remake than Rocky Horror Picture Show when transvestism was switched to transgender. There's a difference. One was funny and daring and the other boring.

Anonymous Dack Thrombosis May 26, 2017 11:14 AM

The old square upper class whitey schtick was in practically every movie made in the 1970s-1980s. It was an attempt by certain somebodies to supplant the old ruling WASP class. Mission accomplished. You rarely see these themes today. They've moved on to interracial and gay stuff because the WASPs really aren't a threat now.

Anonymous basementhomebrewer May 26, 2017 11:15 AM

Vox.com is criticizing the SJW themes. When Vox.com starts sounding like voxday.blogspot.com you know you have gone too far down the rabbit hole with your SJW themes.

Blogger Benjamin Kraft May 26, 2017 11:24 AM

Blogger Johnny May 26, 2017 12:05 PM

Not my favorite kind of movie, but otherwise Dirty Dancing was an exceptionally well done production. For those who may not have seen it, it was young adults acting as they do in a highly stylized and somewhat idealized way. And in the new production, real life intruding on what was otherwise a light almost fairy tale quality production. What a shame they had to go and wreck it.

Blogger Mountain Man May 26, 2017 12:07 PM

Meh.. original sucked, the SJW’s just made it even worse.

Blogger Jeff Wood May 26, 2017 12:10 PM

Yes, the original was a chick flick, and my chick insisted on watching the video draped across my lap, so I had to watch it too.

I remember little of it apart from a few scenes, but I recall being impressed by Patrick Swayze's unapologetically masculine performance.

This was before I took up ballroom dancing, and now, as the Vox reporter says, I know too much about the discipline to even think, if I were a professional, to get involved in a remake. That way lies madness, as the review seems to think.

The water lift scene: Swaze was carrying a back injury, and did the takes in severe pain. Both he and Jennifer Grey caught their deaths of cold from the water.

Just as long as they don't touch Roadhouse.

Although that's not really true. They probably will remake it at some point, because that's what they do, and they'll try to ruin it with SJW crap. But it won't matter, because everyone will forget the remake in a few months, and the copy on my shelf will still be made of awesome.

They remade Robocop in 2014. Does anyone even remember that? If you make a reference to Robocop, everyone still thinks of the 1987 version, and that's still the one you get if you search for it at IG. They rebooted Mad Max -- and did a pretty good job from everything I heard. But what are you more likely to hear: a quote from Fury Road or "Again, you have made me unleash my dogs of war"?

They don't have anything new or interesting to say. They can remake things, or take old plots and dress them up as something new (reboots); but the more they deviate from the original and add their own ideas, the emptier and more forgettable it gets.

Off-topic but they're trying to ruin the Church of Scotland just now.

http://www.churchofscotland.org.uk/news_and_events/news/recent/church_a_step_closer_to_conducting_same_sex_marriages

Basically, the Church has accepted a report concerning the officiation of gay marriage, which will be considered by committee and reported on next year.

Rather annoyingly they lashed an apology to the report the Church accepted, which is providing headline fodder along the lines of 'Church of Scotland apologises to Gay people for discrimination' etc

The report, of course, is disgustingly one-sided and includes the sort of unashamed mental gymnastics you come to expect from the left.

Here is the report the theological forum presented to the general assembly.

http://churchofscotland.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/39573/Theological_Forum.pdf

Here is the debate on the report.

http://stream1.churchofscotland.org.uk/about_us/general_assembly/archive/report_of_the_theological_forum_1

The fact it passed intact doesn't bode well.

Should this go ahead, we may very well be looking at another schism, with the national Kirk decimated once more.

The original seemed to offer a mixed view of the abortion doctor. He was a hard man but he loved his daughter and family. The doctor also had a change of view about giving a large check to a young male character for medical school. Also when Johnny told him -nobody puts baby in the corner- he backed down. ...Once strong looking Johnny played by Patrick Swayze later appeared on SNL looking thin and borderline feminine looking and later still eventually passed. Rip Patrick Swayze. Matthew Mconahey though lacking the size and girth of Swayze has a lot to offer too and does a decent job of carrying on his legacy

The original Dirty Dancing wasn't exactly the best film ever. The abortion subplot was just handled very lamely and it was just such grisly subject matter for a light hearted movie, it didn't fit in with the rest of the story at all. I believe in one scene, a male character hands Baby a copy of the novel The Fountainhead and says in an attempt to justify him getting a woman pregnant, "Some people count, some people don't." Or some social justice warrior crap like that.

Ha, they banned me after I posted info on how many babies have gotten herpes in NYC the past few years from Rabbis performing male genital mutilation.

If you're smart, you'll figure out which hills are worth dying on.

It's going to be funny as hell when the Chinese take over Hollywood and it suddenly becomes pro-American for the first time since John Wayne.

Ending the practice of male genital mutilation is a stand worth taking.

Mine are mutilated. Compared to relatives who are unmutilated, I'm thinking I came off pretty darn well.

Silly but True
"RE: Fury Road
480 hours were infamously filmed. Yes. 240 separate 120-minute-long Fury Roads were filmed.

And from that, a movie was pieced together.

I mean at that point, production or even the art of filmmaking have no meaning. It's the height of excess and directorial laziness.

What we got was a series of cool shots edited together."

I don't know why I bother but here goes: you don't know ANYTHING about filmmaking. Far more is shot than what you see in the finished product. Multiple takes from multiple angles. That's true for EVERY movie and TV show, even documentaries. There's nothing unusual or "infamous" about Fury Road's shooting ratio.

When you don't what you're talking about it's a good idea to STFU, otherwise you just end up looking stupid. ;D

Crisis! Hollywood is running out of 80's movies to remake. Coming up soon, Top Gun 2.

@ 75: few interesting youtubers (Diversity in Comics, Capn Cummings, Englentine) are covering it. Arkham Las Vegas not so much.

Hey i just a whole bunch of liquour and i feel goooo oood. Another thought about Dirty Dancing. My Italian mother was arguably somewhat sexually repressed but sometimes we would watch dirty dancing as a family on cable in the late eighties she would literally make Micheal Jackson sounding noises like woooh and owww when Patrick Swayze would dance and take off shirt that was the most excited i ever saw my mom was when she would see Patrick Swayze

Yo Robby B DeMille, you do know there exists technology to view takes from multiple angles to find the shot that works?

That movie is a prophecy. They are afraid to touch it.

Robert,

When people talk about the process of making Fury Road they're not talking about reshooting a scene or two, and leaving one on cutting room floor dumbass.

Only an idiot thinks filmmakers are still splicing celluloid and constantly changing reels. Modern day film making is all digitalized and often too dizzying to enjoy. I tried to watch Jason Bourne tonight but couldn't keep my eyes on the screen, let alone get into the retread storyline

Dirty Dancing shouldn't be that hard to remake. It was driven by three simple, overlapping elements: nostalgia, dancing, and sex (or romance, as the chicks prefer to think of it). Nostalgia is a given for remakes, I suppose. But the original was about nostalgia for the period in which it was set, especially its music. I don't really know anything about the remake, but I bet they tried to capitalize by being nostalgic about the previous movie, which only gets you so far. It's like second-degree nostalgia. Oh, some guy's lifting some girl in a lake again. Or oh my gosh, he said not to put Baby in the corner. Whoopee.

They utterly forgot it was a period piece in the original whenever they danced. Suddenly it was a sexy MTV video. I assume kids still watch music videos on YouTube or whatever, but are they the absorbing, visceral, sensual delights they used be? I'm thinking of the Hungry Eyes, Cry to Me/These Arms of Mine, and Time of My Life sequences, here. Can they still manage to shove that kind of experience into a movie? Or did they go Broadway with it?

The romantic/sexual element leaves a lot of wiggle room. Especially considering the bar wasn't set very high with Jennifer Grey, though she at least looked like a dancer. Romance is a well-established genre, and people will enjoy them even when they're slapshod. As they will, for instance, give the benefit of their time to crappy horror or martial arts movies. For those who enjoy romance, anyway.

However, there was genuine chemistry between Grey and Swayze. Which is like lightning in a bottle, even with good actors. Plus, this one was missing Jerry Orbach and I presume Swayze's bravura performance of She's Like the Wind.

Stopping men sucking baby boy's penises is a hill anyone with morals would die on.

Good for you. How about instead of mutilating babies we wait until they reach adulthood and then let them decide decide whether they want to mutilate their genitals.
