The triumph of oligarchy

Michael Lind has an intriguing and deeply historical article on what he calls the New Class War in the American Affairs Journal.
If I am correct, the post–Cold War period has come to a close, and the industrial democracies of North America and Europe have entered a new and turbulent era. The managerial class has destroyed the social settlements that constrained it temporarily in the second half of the twentieth century and created a new kind of politics, largely insulated from popular participation and electoral democracy, based on large donors and shifting coalitions within a highly homogeneous coalition of allied Western elites. Following two decades of increasing consolidation of the power of the managerial class, the populist and nationalist wave on both sides of the Atlantic is a predictable rebellion by working-class outsiders against managerial-class insiders and their domestic allies, who are often recruited from native minorities or immigrant diasporas.

Will the result of the contemporary class war among managers and workers on both sides of the Atlantic be a revival of fascism? In some countries in Europe, populist nationalist parties have emerged from tiny fringe fascist parties, or have attracted their supporters. But talk about Weimar America or Weimar Europe is based on a misunderstanding of history, which blames fascism on populism. In reality, despite their populist trappings, most interwar fascist movements were favored by military and economic elites as a way to block social democracy and communism.

It is not the Weimar republic but the banana republic that provides the most likely negative model. In many Latin American countries, politics has traditionally pitted oligarchs versus populists. A similar pattern existed in many Southern states in the United States between the Civil War and the civil rights revolution.

When populist outsiders challenge oligarchic insiders, the oligarchs almost always win. How could they lose? They may not have numbers, but they control most of the wealth, expertise, and political influence and dominate the media, universities, and nonprofit sectors. Most populist waves break and disperse on the concrete seawalls of elite privilege.

In the American South, most populist politicians gave up or sold out. In some cases, like that of Texas governor and senator W. Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel, a country music singer, they were simply folksy fronts for corporate and upper-class interests all along. The few populists who maintained some independence were those who could finance themselves, usually by corrupt means. Louisiana governor Huey Long could battle the ruling families and the powerful corporations because he skimmed money from state employee checks and kept it in a locked “deduct box.” In Texas, anti-Klan populist governor James “Pa” Ferguson, along with his wife Miriam “Ma” Ferguson, who was elected governor after her husband was impeached on the slogan “Two Governors for the price of one,” sold pardons to the relatives of convicted criminals. As billionaires who could finance their own campaigns, Ross Perot and Donald Trump could claim, with some justification, to be free to run against the national establishment.

Those who believe in liberal democracy can look on this kind of political order only with dismay. Most of the time, coteries within a nepotistic elite run things for the benefit of their class. Now and then, a charismatic populist arises, only to fail, sell out to the establishment, or establish a personal or dynastic political-economic racket. Formal democracy may survive, but its spirit has fled. No matter who wins, the insiders or outsiders, the majority will lose.
This is broadly in line with my own expectations, but it tends to contradict anacyclosis and the Ciceronian political cycle, which sees tyranny following democracy rather than aristocracy. Of course, an elite that has learned the importance of keeping its head down may have had the wherewithal to simply skip that aspect of the cycle in favor of the amorphous vampire squid ink of the corpocracy and rule by artificial  judicial persons, each of whom can support thousands of oligarchic insiders like a legal form of Lovecraft's Nyarlatothep.

The section on Hobson's predictions is almost alarming in its prophetic accuracy. It's long, but definitely read the whole thing. I've seen what I personally call "the pirate class" in operation myself, descending upon every promising young corporation and seeking to either drain it dry or personally profit by offering it up as a sacrifice to a larger entity.

Marx was never wrong. Our gentile elites sold us down the river for shekels. Just like the african elites sold their kin into slavery centuries ago. Just like the indian elites made merry with the East India Company.

The aristocracy becomes effeminate, less tribal, intermarries with the other aristocracies and in time, becomes rootless cosmopolitan.

The real history of the 20th century is german aristocrats funding hitler to take out communism and British/American elites happy at the thought, not 'appeasment' which is for the proles to understand.

In time you will see Austrian/libertretardian economics as an ideological tool with no empirical basis. Then the alt right can become truly populist.

Hard not to be demoralized by that analysis VD.

And its worse than he says; they haven't just sold us down the river for profit, they intend to exterminate us after making us obsolete with automation.

I will note a couple things Lind misses, not that it makes the outlook rosier.

The populous movement favors the new developmentalism import substitution strategy. We see this in Trumpism and also in the re-localization movement (which spans the political spectrum).

Also the export oriented strategy could work for us in that we can produce a lot of two things the world cant get enough of: food and oil. Those being low value commodities it doesn't fit Lind's model. However it is a strategy that worked well for the Gulf States. Granted they were client states; but we have the geography, technology, and military power to maintain a superior position.

There's no pockets in a shroud. The grand illusion of temporal success buckles under the burden of actual science. Christianity wins. Like gravity. Yet how? As those walking on the ashes after the apocalypse.
As Chuck Missler says we tend to think of the future as a linear progression of existing trends. So why panic if Vesuvius starts rumbling? It's all happened before - right? Those on top deck of the Titanic played with the ice that fell onto the deck from that giant growler. Play time on the Titanic. But the growler's bite was worse than its bark. Success got very quickly redefined.

Lind states that the managerial class brokered a cold war settlement with the labor class; which was only broke in the post cold war period. This is a shallow understanding.

Going back to the 50's they were in covert war with farm labor; which they succeeded in defeating during the 80s farm crisis; breaking the back of rural America. This freed up the labor needed to decrease wages/bargaining power and the capital needed to further automate.

This was premeditated and intentional:

http://normeconomics.com/AN%20ADAPTIVE%20PROGRAM%20FOR%20AG.pdf

They planned to eliminate 1/3 of all farmers in a 5 year time span; and then successfully did it.

Its ag specific but highly enlightening as to how intentional this all was and how radically engineered our current society is.

This concept of the managerial elite isn't abstract political theory trying to understand events; it actually and literally existed as a conscious conspiracy among the industrial elites.

Blogger Robert Divinity May 22, 2017 6:07 AM

Lastly, it is conceivable that the powerful industrial and financial classes of the West, in order better to keep the economic and political mastery at home, may combine to reverse the policy which has hitherto been gaining ground in the United States and in our white colonies, and may insist upon the free importation of yellow labour for domestic and industrial service in the West. This is a weapon which they hold in reserve, should they need to use it in order to keep the populace in safe subjection.

Hobson's prescience here is jarring. Given low skill labor almost all can be automated now, the primary purpose of mass migration is suppression of the local population. Muslim and African violence are features and not bugs in this context.

Your last observation above, Vox, is dead on. Lind apparently does not see we already are well into the transition to tyranny Plato described. More than the spirit of democracy is dead now.

I didn't know about the Battle of Blair Mountain before. So what makes Bashar Assad's bombing of his own territory bad and the U.S. government's warfare against its own people good? Is it the fact that Assad is bombing the bad guys and the U.S. bombs the good guys?

Last paragraph:

And as long as geopolitical conflict does not escalate into the horrors of world wars, restrained rivalry among great-power blocs is a price worth paying to preserve a politically diverse world.

[that is, if things don't get screwed up, everything will be fine]

In the words of Hobson in 1902: “The hope of a coming internationalism enjoins above all else the maintenance and natural growth of independent nationalities, for without such there could be no gradual evolution of internationalism, but only a series of unsuccessful attempts at a chaotic and unstable cosmopolitanism.”

"independent nationalities" = Trump style nationalism??

"chaotic and unstable cosmopolitanism" = globalism??

Democracies never truly exist. The Logos runs the cosmos. The Logos, or Natural Law, runs all things. Democracy seeks to subvert the Natural Law.

The Natural Law is "Cream rises to the top". In the state of nature, which is a state of war, all nations/races developed into warrior societies. Monarchy and Aristocracy are warrior systems. Militaries are by nature caste societies and form social caste societies. Nature ALWAYS ALWAYS forms caste societies. Democracy seeks to subvert that.

The Enlightenment is about countermanding Nature in producing a "classless republic". They don't exist because Nature always always forms an elite. The elite always control society. What the Enlightenment did, was destroy the racial Warrior Society and replaced it with Rule of the Poor, modern republicanism. The Poor were convinced to get rid of their Warriors classes, and so Nature abhors a vacuum, and so another elite, the Industrial/Academic (the managerial class), arose in its place. Since the Renaissance, cosmopolitanism, a Jewish idea, infected all and so it betrays the racial state. The Poor were used as weapons against their natural racial leaders and adopted Judas goats.

Always Always, if one doesn't accept the Truth, one accepts the doppleganger which is an evil mirror. Democracy is just that, an evil doppleganger that mimics. Either one accepts one racial leadership, or one accepts cosmopolitan elites. Either or, there is always an elite that democracy can't get rid of. Democracy never truly exists. And that is why it always fails.

It appears that the desire to quickly subjugate Russia and China, even at the risk of nuclear war, is related to a desire, by Globaists, to prolong the current economic order.

I have noted that a number of Russian Nationalists have actually been pleased with the West's imposition of sanctions as it has helped fuel import replacement within the Russian Federation.

China has likewise been trying to develop a growing internal demand for the products she produces.

Lind does not address the vast quantity of endowments and foundations which lie outside the tax base - extremely influential foundations populated with 3rd, 4th and 5th generation trust-fund babies who want to save the world, just not in their own back yards.

In addition to "you must go back", I'd like to see trusts taxed like any corporation as well as aggressive trust-busting.

@13 Spectrum

The "Middle Class" is a wholly Western creation. We've never really seen a revolt from there and, in classic Western fashion, they also have most of the guns on the face of the Earth. The "Ruling Class" only survives so long as no small group of Western Men decides they should cease to exist.

Highly interconnected organizations always have massive weaknesses. A Revolt in a Western country will be rather short. Mostly because you can only protect just a few at the top; everyone below is cannon fodder.

Some Dude comments;
"The real history of the 20th century is german aristocrats funding hitler to take out communism and British/American elites happy at the thought, not 'appeasment' which is for the proles to understand."

This is historically false, and is a lie that was created by marxists in the 1930s who wished to push the narrative that Fascism was a movement favoured by the elite (Michael Lind seems to have also fallen for this argument).
The NSDAP's funding model was primarily based around tithes coming from lower and middle class members of the party, in fact the NSDAP only had one hugely wealthy donor, whereas the Jewish-bolsheviks had several millionaire Jewish bankers who helped bankroll them.

The Book "German Big Business and the Rise of Hitler" (New York: Oxford University Press, 1985), deals with these issues well.

"The 1985 book rebuts the standard claim that German big business financed and promoted the attainment of power by Adolf Hitler. It demonstrates that the extent of big business support for Hitler and the Nazi Party has been greatly exaggerated, even falsified. Emil Kirdorf and Fritz Thyssen were the only captains of industry who actively supported the Nazis. Actual sources of financing for election campaigns and party activities came mostly from membership dues and contributions by small and medium-sized businesses. According to William L. Patch of Washington and Lee University, Turner’s conclusions “are now accepted by nearly all specialists in the field.” - Andrew Hamilton.

"Note that freedom from large subsidies enabled the NSDAP to propagate an extremely radical message unpalatable to elites then and now—apart from the PC radicalism of philo-Semitism, anti-white racism, and Leftism that has always been acceptable to elites. The NSDAP thereby satisfied the genuine needs and aspirations of its white constituency and generated an intensely loyal mass following."

Some Dude also comments
"he establishment are the rich. It just so happens we live in a world where most of the rich that are not trust fund babies are jewish."
Again this is false, I suggest reading The Culture of Critique by Kevin MacDonald or some his articles over theoccidentalobserver.net
No doubt whites exploit other whites, but never to the extent that we are seeing today. Jews do not have the genes which predispose them to altruism like whites, they don't have the cultural assimilation and instead their identity is based around be the chosen ones, destined to read over the goyim.
Examples of this;
In 1915 Lothrop Stoddard got his PhD in history from Harvard for his racialist study of the Haitian revolution. He was an avowed racialist and wrote extensively about the racial differences in intelligence and temperament. His books "Revolt Against Civilization" and "The Rising Tide of Colour" are excellent examples. When exactly did racial science (which protected working class whites) collapse? It happened in the late 1920s when (((Franz Boaz))) and his gang of semites took over the anthropology departments of the Ivy league through nepotism and vicious lying and bullying. The poor polite Anglo-Saxons never had a chance.

we could go on; immigration, race-mixing, hollywood, feminism, pornography, stock market manipulation. An all white society wouldn't be perfect, but it would be a lot better than the Jew one we have today.
And for anyone who's under the impression that Jews are in these positions of power because of the schmarts. Remember this;
Whites make up 70% of national merit scholars, Jews 6%.
Jews outnumber whites in Harvard.

Popular unrest is a lot easier to keep under control when you have a low IQ, low agency population.
We can see that peasants mostly have unsuccessful revolts and only when they actually get hungry.
The middle class is nearly inert.
The upper middle class and prospective elites is where the danger lies. They're the ones who start revolutions every time.
In a nation with decent human capital, you start with popular unrest which is harmless by itself but it signals to the educated classes that the rulers are vulnerable to being replaced.

From 1858 to now, so almost 160 years, we've been able to communicate from the West Coast to Eastern Europe generally within a Day. Now we can do it in under a second. This has linked the "West" together in ways that were never possible previously. We're coming to an end of that understanding because the coordination & control it offered is no longer exclusively held.

The great trends of History move ever onward.

The anakyklosis, the "turning of governmental change" is the product of human character. Government is only the symbol of the people it represents. Virtue is very necessary for the keeping of good government. When Virtue disappears, is when democracy and tyranny arise.

Remember: "Every fascist is a nationalist---but not every nationalist is a fascist". Fascism is the combination of socialism with nationalism: nationalism + Socialism = fascism. Fascism, or National Socialism is a reaction to International Socialism; i.e. Socialists that wanted to remain patriotic and rejected internationalism. A monarchist is a natural nationalist for the Monarch is the racial leader.

Hitler was a Leftist; he was part of the Los Von Rome movement; he was a part of the modern republican movement; he was for "revolution"; he hated monarchy and aristocracy; he was an egalitarian; he was a vegan. He was an idealist and hence a socialist.

The Father of Socialism was Hegel who was a Kabbalist. German Idealism was influenced by the Kabbalah. Hegel is the father of both International Socialism and National Socialism.

From that point on,[ the 1886 Supreme Court case of Santa Clara County v. Armed with these “rights,” corporations increased control over resources, jobs, commerce, politicians, even judges and the law.

Per this, I was just a few minutes ago reading this, from the closing pages of the "Imperial China" chapter of The Oxford History of the World:

"At a certain level of intensity and success [rebellious peasants] these might win support from the gentry and officials, from prudence or sympathy. When that happened, the end of a dynasty was probably approaching, for Confucian principles taught that, although rebellion or relocation was wrong if a true king reigned, a government which provoked insurrection and could not control it ought to be replaced, for it was, ipso facto, illegitimate." @#7. "Lind apparently does not see we already are well into the transition to tyranny Plato described."

Similarly, when I read, " In an economy with low or no productivity growth, landlords, bankers, and other rentiers might displace the managers of the industrial sector as the dominant class."

I did a double take and thought "might"?

He seems to be well behind the curve here. Finance capital captured western governments one, perhaps two decades ago. TARP anyone?

To anyone that followed the ins and outs of the EU's dealings with Greece a couple of years ago it became blatantly obvious that the EU is the political tool of the banks.

The old colonial model is still alive and well in agriculture; probably other places if you know to look.

In agriculture all profits go to the chemical companies who own the seed and fertilizer rights. Farmers are subsidized just enough to keep them afloat but most of that gets sucked up by the bank or the landlords. Your typical farmer fails to make even minimum wage for his time.

@35 Part of the problem here is we have no real community anymore. No grassroots life reality to add continuity.

Occasionally we all get fed up enough to coalesce around a cause but inevitably we filter back to being consumer individuals. What organizations we create soon enough become part of the problem.

This probably has its root cause in our immigration experience and lack of family clans. But that wouldn't apply to other countries so I'm not sure the bigger problems.

Blogger DemonicProfessorEl May 22, 2017 11:41 AM

Hmmm...This is oddly optimistic, even if pessimistic for the short term.

I agree with Vox that the Alt-Right will continue to grow as the elites continue their barbarism and become ever more forthright with their intentions. I mean, their intelligentsia outright advocate white genocide these days, with little repercussion.

Why the particular demographic of Europeans? Because Europeans believe in self-determinism (to varying degrees) and ownership of their own property/productivity (I make a table, it's my table). You replace them with a pliant population (low-IQ inbreds) to get utopia.

The globalists vs. populists is not a new thing. It's the landed peasants and bourgeoisie in the middle ages fighting corrupt and dumb/insane kings and nobility (Magna Charta, for example). It's the sans coulottes, merchants, and army overthrowing Robespierre and Jacobins. It's the citizens of Rome overthrowing the corrupt Senate (that restricted land use and job growth in favor cheap labor/slavery, latifundia systems).

Who ends up winning these? Who is the Alt-Right? The elites do learn their lesson - Marx wanted to disarm those who opposed the Utopia Kings, Cultural Marxism adapting from economic Marxism. This is an old story of pain, struggle, blood. The midwit elites have a "destiny" to rule over the peasants and don't want their power interrupted by mere upstarts.

However, the old elites, as cynical as they were, had a metaphysics behind them: the gods favored them, Divine Right, certain aspects of predestination.

Only now, that has been abandoned for "scientific" materialism - the elites rule because they have the power to. They are Nihilists to the "T," and this is their downfall. Their only legacy is their own power and the "utopia" they create. Their whole power structure is built on keeping a productive class productive. But if the latter are replaces with robots that nobody knows how to operate repair, what will happen?

In the long view, the elites have hit an endmark - they know if they don't seize the power now, they can't for long, long time. These are the attacks of a cornered, wounded beast. Still very, very dangerous, but deceptively weak.

I don't think we're in for happy times for a while.

the article glosses over the impact of 3d printing, AI, robotics, and algorithmic driven feedback loop robotic ecosystems which will inevitably explode productivity and allow for large scale wage increases for the domestic service economy. There also will be a explosion in the need for security services if low IQ immigration is not curbed in 1st world economies.

That can be automated also.

Tangentially related:

Progressivism by definition denies Anacyclosis (as it denies most of the evidence and lessons of history)

Progressivism requires that trajectory of mankind is linear, not cyclic. (Mankind "progress")

To be a modern "progressive" is to have made a leap of faith that mankind is "evolving" towards an ever brighter future. Traditions/religions are therefore bad and all changes are for the good (even if they are clearly not) because: end of the rainbow.

If you need a reason why liberals/progressives are still freaking out about Trump/Brexit/the rise of nationalism and refuse to accept it, it's because their very religion has been shown to be false.

While Lind's history is interesting, I don't see how it is determinative. We have in the West a power struggle in society, as all societies have such struggles. With the current set-up in the West, with the current technology (information flow to the people) we have struggles along the lines of where power is easily gathered and implemented.

However one important point I see not addressed is the delusion of the elites and their complete loss of the ability to think or act in reality. Think of the Bush and then the Trump derangement syndrome and add the taught religion of Gaia and environmentalism and we have a priesthood not a managerial class. The priesthood/clergy may preach PC, intersectionality, 32 genders, and recycling instead of the old religions, but this is not the technocratic thinkers of Burnahm. Instead of a meritocracy that the theorists Lind referenced, we have something else that does not bode well for the functioning of society.

Priesthoods thrived in lower civilizations and we are rapidly falling to become a place where the new on will thrive.

Somehow Lind makes it though that whole piece without namechecking the elephant in the room: Sam Francis' epic tome "Leviathan and Its Enemies".

the oligarchs almost always win. How could they lose? They may not have numbers, but they control most of the wealth, expertise, and political influence and dominate the media, universities, and nonprofit sectors.

Some pessimism upstream about Lind's analysis, but the seeds for the oligarchs' defeat lie in that last sentence. Acquire new wealth. Kerryman86 mentioned 3d printing. Write code, strengthen your Maker/DIY skills, and be entrepreneurial. You can be far more nimble than a giant corporation barnacled by an HR department can ever be. Strike when the oligarchs' wealth collapses in a bubble or hyperinflation. Communicate using new media. Boycott the old media. Let the university bubble collapse. Etc.

Vox, is this pirate class the same as the "Great Pirates" that Buckminster Fuller wrote about?

All the lefties who hate capitalism are doing capitalism's bidding by supporting open borders.

Mention to a leftist that Cesar Chavez opposed immigration. That labor unions opposed immigration. At best you'll get silence.

Leftists have to demonize the people they are destroying, in their terminology, "other" them. If they didn't they might have to acknowledge that what they are doing is for their economic benefit at the expense of others.

@11

"All the lefties who hate capitalism are doing capitalism's bidding by supporting open borders."

Technically speaking, that's a feature, not a bug. The old school Communists believed that their day would not come until capitalism had prepared the way by reaching the fullest extent of its capabilities. They were hardcore internationalists...that's why their organization was called "the international". It went out the window with Lenin and Stalin, but it has always been there back in the leftie genetic makeup.
