Blog rankings

Again, I will point out that Alexa is a stupid and unreliable metric that doesn't even measure traffic. But because I'm one of the few bloggers who is transparent about my traffic - 103,968 Google pageviews here yesterday - we're forced to resort to it for the purposes of comparison.

Mike Glyer was under the impression that File 770 had a better Alexa ranking than Larry Correia's Monster Hunter Nation.

Let's look at the current US rankings for a few SF sites.
  • 323,236: File 770
  • 111,092: Monster Hunter Nation
  • 88,956: Castalia House
  • 63,207: Black Gate
  • 45,741: Whatever
  • 20,907: Not a Blog
  • 9,611: Vox Popoli
  • 6,506: Tor
Those are the facts. About the relative positions I would have assumed. I leave it to you to manage their interpretation.

Pageview methology has moved a long way since Alexa started.
Besides, Amazon owns it. Converged it is.

Blogger Jack Ward June 14, 2017 9:45 PM

If I read this correctly VD blog lower ranked than Tor?
WTF? Something is rank and just not in Denmark.

Anonymous VFM #7916 June 14, 2017 9:50 PM

Correia's fisk nearly brought me to tears of laughter while at work. Talk about an amaz1ng self-pwning by Glyer. Apparently buying all your traffic from Chinese click farms is not readily concealable.

OpenID turk187 June 14, 2017 9:51 PM

Larry pointed out the 92% of File 770's trafic is from China and probably paid for.

Anonymous Katchina June 14, 2017 9:54 PM

Tor's kicking the shit out of all of you. I guess that boycott didn't have much effect.

Blogger Migly June 14, 2017 10:06 PM

Thanks for clearing that up.

Anonymous Peter Grant June 14, 2017 10:23 PM

Well, I'll be darned. According to Alexa, my blog is ranked 75,392 in the USA, between the Castalia House blog and Black Gate. That I had NOT expected!

On the other hand, it's nice to be in good company . . .

;-)

Blogger Jack Ward June 14, 2017 10:40 PM

#5 Or, did Tor just spent a bunch more money than 770? My guess is yes.

Blogger Jack Ward June 14, 2017 10:42 PM

And, we can be sure Vox spent no money to buy traffic. Even so his ranking was more than respectable. After all, he has to pay for those umbrella drinks.

Blogger Mastermind June 14, 2017 10:52 PM

IIRC alexa measures rankings based on the people who use their toolbar. if chinese clickfarms don't use it, it would explain file 770's abysmal ranking. conversely, it would also mean that tor's ranking is probably legit.

Blogger roughcoat June 14, 2017 10:57 PM

Tor has a whole platoon of article writers and barely gets any reader engagement in the comments. Winning?

Anonymous DaveInjustice June 14, 2017 11:59 PM

hah, I was guessing you'd picked up on Larry's Pistol Whipping of Glyer.. more humorous was his pointing out that the higher "International Rating" was anchored by a suspicious ~15000 ranking in China. Curious....

Blogger David The Good June 15, 2017 12:28 AM

Those of you who think voxday.blogspot.com has a low ranking have absolutely no idea how high a ranking that really is. Try starting a blog and hitting inside the top 1,000,000 and see how hard it is. Inside the top 10,000 is a seriously big reach.

Anonymous Allabaster June 15, 2017 12:35 AM

Larry has been smacking him around like a red headed stepchild all day. Good times for all involved.

Blogger SteelPalm June 15, 2017 12:49 AM

I'll do my best in helping Castalia House surpass Black Gate. Hope Vox Popoli surpasses Tor soon.

Also, Larry Correia might be far more of a centrist than us, but damn if he doesn't have some entertaining rhetoric.

OT but Joe Carter of The Gospel Coalition, an Evangical network, in response to the SBC resolution controversy has written what may be the most accurate "mainstream" primer on alt-right ideology.

He evens quotes Vox more than Spencer and even mentions the supremacy rejection point of the 16 Points.

Obviously he still gets some things wrong though.

Man, Larry's post was great.

What is even better is where it appears when I search Mike Glyer on DuckDuckGo:

"the established scientific community"

Vox, I just cut and paste that from Wiki.
All you have to do is keep doing what you are and you should be able to inherit the earth and or pay cash for it. They are intellectually bankrupt, not just economically. Their science is a scam. Their morality criminal.

Washington Post are backing Mueller to drain the Washington swamp. It starts and finishes with how the Russians got their man in and all progress stopped.

The meek shall inherit the Earth. Meek in context means not "the established scientific community"

Point Vox, it doesn't matter which article page of Wiki I took that from. It represents that most destructive alienation from the Socratic Method. The inquiring teachable mind.

Blogger SQT June 15, 2017 2:17 AM

I followed the whole interaction between Larry and Mike on Facebook- it was fantastic. Larry *started* with "go f**k yourself" and went from there. It was the most fun I have had online in awhile.

Why buy traffic when you can buy a red-pill factory and give the pills away.

Blogger Nxx 14 June 15, 2017 3:56 AM

On the subject of blog rankings this may be of interest:

Alt Right Top 40

#13 Vox Popoli is rising and currently battling it out with Red Ice, Taki's and the Chateau.

A more compact ranking, one that is strictly Alt Right is at the Alt Right Portal

In this stricter ranking Vox Popoli is #6 but within a hair's breadth of #5 and #4:

4. Red Ice - 41 663
5. Chateau Heartiste - 41 552
6. Vox Popoli - 41 534

All traffic data is sourced from website.informer.com

Blogger Nxx 14 June 15, 2017 4:10 AM

I will add that Vox Popoli has a higher traffic level than the above stats suggest.

This is because its address changes based on the location of the user. For example the British version, voxday.blogspot.co.uk has its own, separate traffic stats:

Daily visitors:
826

Daily pageviews:
1 652

As a stand alone the British version of Vox Popoli would rank #37, just ahead of Ramzpaul.

Blogger Dane Prywatne June 15, 2017 4:51 AM

There is one note that you should think over, Vox.

"US rankings for a few SF sites." .. yours is no longer a SF site, yours is political site.

Blogger VD June 15, 2017 5:14 AM

That traffic data estimate is way off. This site averages around 95,000 pageviews per day.

Blogger Nxx 14 June 15, 2017 5:57 AM

That traffic data estimate is way off. This site averages around 95,000 pageviews per day.

Indeed your true traffic stat is about double once you include the non-American traffic.

For example, the Italian version (voxday.blogspot.it) has

Daily visitors:
3 768

Daily pageviews:
7 762

The canadian version (voxday.blogspot.ca) has

Daily visitors:
701

Daily pageviews:
1 339

And so on. One has to add them all up in order to get the true traffic picture.

This is a problem only blogger users suffer from because other hosts, such as wordpress.com, maintain a fixed address irrespective of user location.

Be aware that because of this all external traffic metrics, including alexa, only capture your American traffic, which is roughly half.

I use blogger myself but can't find any way to switch this feature off.

Blogger Cataline Sergius June 15, 2017 6:27 AM

Mike Glyer was under the impression that File 770 had a better Alexa ranking than Larry Correia's Monster Hunter Nation.

I would have assumed so too given how much he is paying his Chinese "click-farm" to boost his ranking.

I mean either he is paying for the clicks or for some reason his, written in solely in English blog, is extraordinarily popular with non-English speaking readers.

92 percent of his Alexa recorded readership is from China.

So, what about your claims of Tor's imminent failure? their blog alone gets more traffic than Black Gate, Castalia blog and File 770 together.

Anonymous sully June 15, 2017 6:33 AM

Take your time with your answer. I am itching to see how you can spin this.

Blogger Cataline Sergius June 15, 2017 6:36 AM

@30

6,506: Tor

Yeah, Tor is making all kinds of PewDiePie level bucks with numbers like that.

Blogger VD June 15, 2017 6:46 AM

So, what about your claims of Tor's imminent failure? their blog alone gets more traffic than Black Gate, Castalia blog and File 770 together.

They don't make money from their blog. I know they are in trouble. They are cutting contracts and releasing authors because they are under financial pressure. They have also gone to using cheaper paper and wider margins in their books.

Their mother company, Macmillan, is down. Tor's sales are down too. From Publisher's Weekly: "A Rough Six Months for Big Book Publishers In the first half of 2016, five large houses all saw sales drop"

If the site of the biggest SF/F publisher is only a little better trafficked/linked than my personal blog, they are in trouble.

Anonymous basementhomebrewer June 15, 2017 7:15 AM

What is with these SJWs and obsession with blog rankings? First Scalzi and now Glyer. The next argument is going to be "the quality of the people who visit my blog are better than yours. The guy at the chinease click farm always calls me sir when I talk to him. No one ever calls me that! I bet your fans never call you sir!"

Do you really think that the fact that it's barely doing better than some non-celebrity guy's personal blog needs to be "spun" as anything? Tor is supposed to be the #1 publisher of the entire genre fer cryin' out loud.

Blogger Jeff Weimer June 15, 2017 8:57 AM

And Glyer has it exactly backwards, Larry complained that he got almost no traffic *from* file770, not *to* file770. And this is an answer to a dick-measuring point Larry never made. *And* it it's a self-refutation proving Glyer's dick is actually smaller.

Not that Glyer's flying monkeys would know - Larry is a nonperson so whatever Glyer says must be the case.

Thanks for clearing that up.

notice how, even here, Glyer STILL can't knock it off with the passive aggressive stupid.

dialectically, what has Vox done?

he agreed and amplified what Correia had already stated.

has Glyer "thanked" Larry for clarifying the Fake Citations that Mike had made? no? why not? Larry was there first, wasn't he?

at this rate, Glyer is lucky he didn't screenshot his browsing tabs. we're verging on Eichenwald levels of stupid here.

uh, maybe you could try reading Vox's original post?

Vox gets results he expected to get, Sully expects Vox to find it necessary to "spin" reality.

SJWs always project.
SJWs always lie.

Slightly OT, but the guy who indirectly started all this, Jon Del Arroz, just published a piece on Alt-Tech over at the Federalist. It focuses on Brave, Gab, and Infogalactic(!).

http://thefederalist.com/2017/06/14/keep-online-browsing-unfiltered-political-propaganda/

Oh, and del Arroz is a public Christian, and a Hispanic, and reads Cernovich, and proudly cites Castalia House. And has a new steampunk book out! Seems like a good guy to help out.

All this talk about rankings made me curious, so I went and looked up the Alexa ranking of my main blog.

Between 16 and 17 million world-wide.

It probably would have been much higher when I was actively writing serious, in-depth pieces for it.  Now it's mostly there for reference, which is why it irritates the hell out of me that Startpage censors it from its search results even when I specify it as the site I want to search.  If I want to find anything there I have to go to Google or Bing.

Well, getting Canadian Immigration is not a big deal anymore if you have certain set of skills. Canadian Immigration is a perfect way to get immigration. They are offering it for immigrants of the world, because they need a lot of men to boost their economy. If you want to get it, these are the guys to select: http://immigrationexperts.pk/canada/
