Media Con #2 in action

You may recall that I mentioned the three cons that reporters run on people they want to submit to playing punching bag for an article. Bre Faucheux turned down Rachel Poser of Harper's Magazine three times, prompting this threatening variant on Media Con #2.

Your name appears in the piece and it is my responsibility to make sure you and your views are represented accurately.

To help put this in context, consider this little glimpse behind the media curtain.

When I told my editor at Literally, Darling I wanted to write a story about conversations I’d been having with a white nationalist, she told me she thought it would be a good idea, but wanted to be careful that we didn’t “normalize” him. I understood this to mean she wanted to make it clear nobody at Literally, Darling supported or condoned Mr. Patriarch’s views (we don’t).

Neither the reporter, the editor, nor the fact-checker is even remotely interested in ensuring that the target or his views are represented accurately. To the contrary, they are very careful to make sure that neither the target nor his views are portrayed as positive in any way. So, what they do write the story in accordance with the negative narrative, then cherry-pick a kill-quote or two, then attempt to get the target to confirm the accuracy of the kill-quote.

What they are attempting to do is to bolster the narrative with the assistance of the bamboozled target. Bre was wise to turn continue to turn them down, because there is absolutely no benefit to her from bolstering the Harper's narrative about the women of the Alt-Right.

I'm digging how she gave Bre three options for response although I don't really get the "No I am not" box?

Do you have time for a phone call this week?

No I am not.

Blogger The Z Blog June 28, 2017 9:53 AM

The way I look at it, when you agree to do an interview or answer questions for a story, you are giving something of value to the interviewer. You may do it because you think they will, in turn, give you publicity. You may do it just to be polite. No matter the reason, you are helping that person and their organization.

If that person or organization is committed to your destruction, you're basically giving the enemy a gun and promising to stand still for them. Worse, you are encouraging them to take aim at members of your team. If one of us agrees to go on CNN, for example, we are helping an organization dedicated to destroying us. There's a word for that.

The only way out of this is through solidarity. Support the media that supports you and deny the media that opposes you.

Anonymous Rfvujm June 28, 2017 9:57 AM

What if you agree to the interview but just no-show, to annoy the journalist and waste their time?

Yes, it's childish and petty, but it's also minimal effort.

Anonymous VFM #6306 June 28, 2017 9:58 AM

Andon, the MSM has been openly acknowledged as deceptive to the root at least since Marshall McLuhan.

It is collapsing now to the point where youtube e-celebs routinely beat CNN for ratings, and primetime viewership is less than one-half percent of the population.

Now, they are freaking out completely because they can't even set the Narrative consistently.

Why do you want to replicate this model? Fox News has shown that that just isnvt a relevant model for the truth anyhow. Just starve it and let it die.

Honest media is all around. Just cite and support that instead. It doesn't have to look like Walter Cronkite sucking at Jane Fonda's teat anymore. The dinos are doomed.

I hope the recipient of that email didn't choose the [No I am not] option. In fact, simply should not have replied to the email at all. There is a trick some less than ethical companies/charities are using with voice calls, namely asking a harmless question to evoke a (spoken) ''yes'' or other affirmative answer. The ''yes'' is recorded, then used out of context to say you OK'd whatever they were actually pushing:
I.E. ''Is it morning where you are?'' (call at 10am) ''yes''. Then (caller) ''Would you like our wonderful offer?'' (your prerecorded) ''yes''.
Replying in any way is the same thing, no reply and all they can legitimately say is ''calls/emails to [blah blah] were not returned in time for this article''.
Any reply (including [No I am not]) can and will be used against you.

Uh, no.

That's why I sort of hate most people my age. Sometimes they sit there wondering in frustration about things that they could solve by taking out their phone and searching for 10 seconds.

And they have zero understanding of technology. I'm the big computer guy in their lives, so they call and ask "when I try to run ProgramZ, it errors, why it do that?" and act confused w3hen, no, I can't diagnose their random problem with a random piece of software on their random operating system over the phone.

Or they are astonished that a high speed digital designer for spacecraft systems doesn't know from memory every local electrical code for rewiring their stupid garage.

About 18 yrs ago, some kid in my neighborhood was selling magazine subscriptions for school. I took pity on him and took a one yr subscription of a teen girl's mag and one of those ladies' home magazines,(Family Circle?), I paid for the full year for both, at the time.
Fast forward to this week, and I've just stacked them in with the other garbage that still arrives in my mailbox every week, for no obvious reason. I've never even received a bill asking me to pay for these magazines again, (of course I wouldn't), and twice I've torn out the cardboard card inserts and marked them with CANCEL and sent them back, & yet, they continue to sent these useless wastes of paper. The teen magazine is filled with degeneracy and SJW Marxism, the old lady mag is filled with ads, subtle SJW stories, "exotic" recipes, suggestions of "foreign" travel, and expensive & useless home decoration, in case anyone is interested. One note about the teen girl magazine, of the girls featured either in the stories or ads, only about 20-30% are white, inverse to the percentages 18 yrs ago, when I first got the magazine for my daughter.

Reparations demand is a subtle way of pushing the idea to jihad that, even though they get the tingles making innocent strangers suffer, we are keeping tabs. And if we are keeping tabs, then maybe their god isn't necessarily in the right.

Now all this depends, of course on us having enough clout to make these demands. But still way better than the base grovelling the jihadist sees us doing (thus encouraging more attacks).

Here's how they reason it: it's not cannibalism if you eat a non-Muslim, because non-Muslims are not actual people. Therefore Muslims are not cannibals.

Fast forward to this week, and I've just stacked them in with the other garbage that still arrives in my mailbox every week, for no obvious reason.

Magazines' most important source of income is advertising; they break even (at best) on newstand sales and subscriptions. Advertising rates are base primarily on subscription numbers (with some input from newstand sales rates). That's how you can pay $1 or less an issue for a subscription to a magazine that sells for $4 or more on the newstand.

Blogger tublecane June 28, 2017 5:42 PM

I found myself immediately offended by the name Literally, Darling, so I inquired into my mind as to why. I presume it's a play on "literary darling," which I think is a phrase I've heard before. "Literally, Darling" may be a phrase no one's ever uttered before.

What is the meaning of this playfulness? Well, "darling" has feminine connotations. But it isn't a word females use with eachother, I don't think, unless they're being ironic. Then there's that word "literally," which gets thrown around an awful lot but in the title of a blog I would associate it with hipsterism. Therefore, this thing is probably a blog for hipster females. Probably feminist and SJW-y, too.

That's just my Holmesian deduction based on the name alone as to why someone would pick that name. On its face, the phrase means nothing to me. Deeper down, it also means nothing.

It's wordplay without an object, except to get people's clicks. Why is it that clicks are so often got through annoying people? Or making them think they're missing out on the joke? Why can't they come up with something that's actually clever?

Or maybe I actually am missing out on something. But for all I know, it makes me want to wretch.
