Megan McArdle is astonishingly stupid

I've never had any respect for her; as someone who understands economics considerably better than she does, reading her articles have always been painful. But this is a new nadir for the woman:
On Monday, the New York Times published a jaw-dropping story, alleging that a 2016 meeting between a Russian attorney and Donald Trump's son and son-in-law had been arranged to discuss dirt on Hillary Clinton that a Kremlin-connected lawyer might be willing to provide to the Trump campaign. Donald Trump Jr. had been informed via email that this compromising information was part of a Russian government operation to help his father win the presidency.

Facing an accusation like that, Donald Trump Jr. obviously didn’t want to sit around while the Times dribbled out information bolstering the speculation that the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia. He rushed to confirm it himself, tweeting out the email chain. His response to being informed that Russia was trying to engineer the outcome of an American election, with efforts that included providing damaging information about Clinton? “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.” Son-in-law Jared Kushner was cc’d on the email.

Is this illegal? Does getting oppo research from a foreign power count as an in-kind campaign contribution from a foreign national, one that might leave Jr. and Kushner vulnerable to criminal prosecution? I have no idea, because as we say on the interwebs, I am not a lawyer. Regardless of whether these actions turn out to be legal, it hardly ceases to be a problem if this somehow manages to squeak through some hole in our federal election laws. What they did is so obviously wrong that a 10-year-old child would know better.

Social media indicates that there are some people out there still trying to defend the Trump camp's relationship with Russia, so it bears spelling out why this is, as the ethicists and public relations pros say, "not OK."

Donald Trump is an American. He is an American who ran for office under a slogan of patriotic pride and love of country. People who love their country do not help rival powers intervene in their country’s elections, even if that intervention might have the lovely side effect of getting them elected. Countries gonna country, and spies gonna spy. But Americans running for American office must pick sides: the will of American voters or the influence of a foreign power. Hint: You choose your fellow Americans.

What happened at the meeting could ultimately be irrelevant. The sin to which Donald Trump Jr. has already confessed is egregious enough. A decent person would not give an audience to a foreign power promising to help tear down the opposition. A decent person certainly would not contemplate and suggest timing of any document release -- which moves this revelation beyond merely “taking a meeting you shouldn’t have” and into the territory of “a presidential campaign actively coordinating with foreign agents.”

Even Trump supporters seem to be having trouble mustering much of a defense. There was a lot of irrelevant sputtering on social media this morning. One Trump apologist asked me: What about Aipac? (Unfortunately, Twitter offered no way to transmit my response: an astonished, incomprehending stare.) Others mounted standard complaints about leaks and sly implication. We are now past the point of anonymous sources and innuendo. Donald Trump Jr. showed us the primary sources, pleading guilty in the court of public opinion.

The president's supporters have already retreated to what now looks to be their last rhetorical stand: to say that this isn’t collusion, but just politics. They get creative and postulate that this isn't unlike what Clinton's campaign would have done.

Here's the reality: Once you are given the details of a Russian attempt to change the outcome of an American election, there is only one patriotic thing you can do, and that is to get on the phone to the FBI and say “I have some very disturbing news.” End of story.
Translation: Donald Trump Jr. is not a politician, did not do anything illegal, and did nothing more than what is generally known as "opposition research". The source is totally irrelevant, as should be obvious considering the large number of US-Israeli dual nationals who would otherwise be entirely barred from any involvement in the U.S. political process.

And to claim that "Trump's Defeated Defenders Can Only Whimper" is even more ridiculously stupid than the illogical argument she is making in the article itself. We're not whimpering, we're laughing at the desperation of the Never-Trumpers. Besides, we all know where tracking down the origins of this story is going to lead.

This is, indeed, utterly ridiculous. If getting "opposition research" from a foreign national counts as an "in-kind campaign contribution", where does it stop? Will we be subjected to the pathetic spectacle of American presidential candidates pleading with foreigners to keep their political opinions to themselves, lest a foreigner influence some American, somewhere in the world, to vote for them?

Blogger Chris Mallory July 12, 2017 8:21 AM

Unless of course that foreign power is Israel. Then candidates must keep wearing those beanies and kissing butt in Tel Aviv.

My favorite part of this story is that if this clumsy Email/meeting involving a British music producer is true, it sounds like a tacit confession by the left that there was no real connection between Trump and Russia. Because IF there was some kind of collusion between Trump and Russia, is this the way that it would happen? C'mon. Is the music producer a Russian agent too? Any thinking person can see what's going on here.

Statement From the Office of Donald Trump, Jr.: For Immediate Release to All News Organizations
Also CNN

Mr. Trump, Jr.:

"The meeting I had with the Russian lawyer during the campaign was completely innocent.

We simply discussed my father selling Putin another 20% of America's uranium supplies while I would be giving speeches in Moscow for half-million dollar payments to the Trump Foundation.

Additionally, our campaign manager would become business partners with Putin in the energy business and accept million-ruble payments from Putin. If caught, those assets could be secretly transferred to a family member. And other family members could lobby for Sanctions Relief on behalf of Putin's Sberbank.

We also secretly conveyed a promised the Russians to be more flexible after the election on missile defenses in Poland.

Furthermore, we cut a secret deal with Putin: if he would help give us political cover with the Iran Deal, and supply our Iranian friends with uranium and missile defenses to protect their nuke factories, we would, in return, allow Russia to run amok in the Middle East and establish military bases there for the first time since America ran them out in 1973.

All these practices--and more!--are all standard, widely-accepted and approved practices in Washington, D.C..

They are completely unremarkable, commonplace collusions and occurrences that require no investigation whatsoever.

In fact, they are the hallmark of Good Government and All That Is Decent, Pure, Good and True(tm).

When Democrats do it."https://donsurber.blogspot.com/2017/07/cnns-cuomo-not-embarrassed-as-russia.html?showComment=1499780657297&m=1#c6896597389416688209

The Democrats released a dossier on Trump by a former British spy. This dossier alleged the Russians had dirt on Trump. In order for this dossier to have that information either opposition research with Kremlin connected Russians must have occurred, or the dossier was knowingly fake. Either scenario is just as bad.

Just when you thought this couldn't get any dumber.

The Democrats invented the "Russians in our elections" narrative to explain away their nonexistent computer security, and later their election loss. They saw Trump-conniving Russian hackers behind every DNC leak and every ballot machine. Now, after months of digging, they find out there might have been a meeting with someone from Russia who had dirt on the Clintons, and they want to frame this as the Russian hacking scare they were talking about all along? When we already know the whole narrative was started by an actual Russian hacker working for the DNC?

Has it occurred to any of these geniuses what might happen if DJT Jr. comes out and says, "Yes, I had this meeting, and here's what they showed me. Ever heard of Epstein Island?"

So I am suppose to be outraged that there was a meeting between Trump Jr and a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin about something to discredit Hillary but nothing happened

But I am suppose to not be outraged and believe some British guy with ties to British intelligence claims that Russian hookers peed on a bed which was put out to discredit Trump.

So in fact the person with ties to the Kremlin did nothing to discredit Hillary, while a person with ties to British intelligence was actively trying to discredit Trump

Sounds like the British along with the Democratic Party and the MSM are trying to interfere with US politics.

In my mind, the best response is:

The Russian citizens claimed to have information about Hillary collusion with Russia. Either that information was used in the campaign to damage Hillary (i.e. Hillary did collude with the Russians), Trump Jr. wouldn't play ball and got nothing, or there was no information.

It has to be one of those three things.

Blogger buzzardist July 12, 2017 9:19 AM

Yeah, McArdle...stupid.

Democrats were more than happy to get the Trump dossier from a British (foreign!) agent, who sourced his info from Russian (foreign!) intelligence. That the dossier ended up being a pack of lies and unprovable assertions is irrelevant. That it came from foreign sources was a non-issue. The Left had no problem airing it and crowing about it.

And the Clinton campaign colluded with Ukraine to try to undermine Trump. It's the same kind of thing that Democrats are accusing Trump and Trump, Jr., of doing now, except that Clinton and Ukraine were actually in bed together in documentable ways, whereas the evidence against Trump for collusion is utterly lacking.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/ukraine-sabotage-trump-backfire-233446

But, hey, that's not a story because shut up.

Trump, Jr., was a chump for taking the meeting. The people offering the Clinton dirt were liars, and they set up Trump, Jr. Whether the set-up was meant to lobby Trump on the Magnitsky Act, test out how open Trump was to working with the Russians, or merely to get on record a meeting that could later be used to embarrass and undermine Trump, I don't know. But they were lying that they had dirt on Clinton, which means that they were likely also lying that Russia wanted to help Trump.

I do love the "it's unethical!" stuff. Are these people idiots? All of Conservative Inc. needs to be slapped across the face with a fish. Hard.

Anonymous Attorn July 12, 2017 9:26 AM

One of the things this all shows is that Trump Jr., Manafort and Kushner are way too dumb for words.

This also shows (again) that many in the Trump campaign are straight up liars. How many times did they claim we didn't meet with Russians, then changed their story when it was discovered they did. Trump Jr. said the meeting was about adoption (right, that requires he and Manafort and Kushner to attend), but when he found out the NY Times had the goods, he changes his story.

Finally, circumstantial evidence suggests that President Trump was well briefed on this happy meeting. Just 4 days after the meeting, Trump promised a crowed at a campaign event damaging and shocking revelations about Clinton.

The questions are these:

1. Just how compromised by the Russians is Trump?
2. Will Trump throw his son under the buss?
3. How many other shoes will drop
4. Why the need to lie about so many contacts with Russian?

Maybe the uniparty needs to re-learn the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do to you. Big deal, he met with a Russian lawyer, so now no American is ever allowed to talk to a foreigner now? Wait, that may be a good thing, since we now have a country full of Mexicans, they are unduly influencing our election process, so must be removed. I like that line of thinking!

Some of us are old enough to remember when the Clintons were hosting foreign nationals (Chinese, in the particular case) in the White House and renting out the Lincoln bedroom in exchange for campaign donations. But that was just one of the many scandals that got washed by in the flood of Clinton scandals at the time, when they came too fast for people to focus on one until there was a girl with a thong and a stained dress.

The other thing to consider now is the political side. There is now a slow turning of the political boat. Republicans are now seriously criticizing the administration and its competence, particularly in the way it has handled the Russia issue.

Question:

What happens when Republicans in congress and elsewhere begin to express their lack of confidence in the administration and how will this impact the success of the Trump agenda. When members of the GOP started to turn on Nixon in 72/73, the Nixon agenda ground to a halt.

On Monday, the New York Times published a jaw-dropping story, alleging that a 2016 meeting between 50 Russian hookers and Crooked Eye Clintons husband.

What they did is so obviously wrong that a 10-year-old child would know better.

Especially if that 10year old child was talking about Crooked Eye Clinton being face down in Haitian cheese 5 years ago.

OTOH I have meet blacks that couldn't understand things 8yo relatives were capable of.

Once you are given the details of a Russian attempt to change the outcome of an American election, there is only one patriotic thing you can do, and that is to get on the phone to the FBI and say “I have some very disturbing news.” End of story.

She is wrong, everyone who is by law a mandatory abuse reporter would take photos of the Clintons raping kids to the cops.

I'm with the Dems on this issue. No foreign national should have any contact with any American pursuing an elected office during an election year.

All foreigners must be purged from American soil before the 2018 campaign season begins. Any contact with a foreign official working in any capacity for a foreign government is to be illegal.

Her words:
"But Americans running for American office must pick sides: the will of American voters or the influence of a foreign power. Hint: You choose your fellow Americans."

If this is what the Dems want lets give it to them.

I assume this is because you've got no defense against this claim, nor the others I made, leaving you with nothing but vaguely ominous sports metaphord, which are very weak arguments.

This is a miserable foundation to attempt to erect a controversy on top of. Even you trolls are having a dickens of a time trying to weave a story out of this, as you are demonstrating through your own failure to do so. I also expect this to end up boomeranging against Trump's critics, as so many of their other mouse farts have as well.

Basically, it is likely that the faked DNS logs (so-called pinging from Trump Tower with the Russian bank) was used to get the FISA warrant, that got the spying going that intercepted Donald Jr.s emails.

There is nothing here that will lead to impeachment, plus the GOP led congress wouldn't allow it. The impact however is in the impression this leaves with Congress and Americans. Nothing about this is good. If and when more shoes drop on the Campaign and Trump's devotion to Russia over the U.S., things could change fast.

You have to admit that the optics are not good. I hate to resort to "the other side does it, too" defense, but in fact, the other side DOES do it, and has been doing a lot of it for a long time. Bill Clinton colluded with Chinese Communists, who used loopholes to donate thousands, if not millions to his campaign. Obama did the same. Al Gore received millions from Qatar, who bought out his failing TV network, and Hillary Clinton sold favors for donations to the Clinton foundation.

While it is unfortunate that the body of the text of the emails indicates that the dirt on Hillary was from the Russian government trying to help Trump, the reality is that the actual information offered was neither helpful, nor from the Russian government. Like I said, the optics are terrible.

But the reason Donald Trump won the Presidency is that he fought like the Democrats do, and Republicans need to get over their squeemishness about fighting fire with fire. We are in a struggle for the survival of Western culture. Apparently, some people still don't understand that. FDR made common cause with Russians against the Nazi's. Whatever it takes to rid the USA of the leftists is fair game as far as I'm concerned.

I've seen some retards screaming this meeting is treason. Article 3, Section 3:

"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."

Obviously Don Jr wasn't levying war against the states. So the question then becomes - did Don Jr give aid and comfort to an enemy? No aid nor comfort was given, just a simple hearing of a petition - the pretense of the meeting was damaging information about a domestic political adversary. Was this lawyer he met a designated enemy of the United States? Seems not since she was spotted during the ambassador's delivering of testimony before Congress just a few days later.

Furthermore, is Russia legally our "enemy"? I don't see how. How would defeating their paid puppet that they could easily bribe and control really providing them aid or comfort? Of course, these people also like to redefine common words.

The Dems have convinced themselves that there's going to be a massive blue wave in 2018. Kek.

Attorn, the very fact you're promoting Obama as an expert on health care policy is just another data point hinting that you are indeed an idiot.

I know progs like you don't mind one bit pissing away money on overpriced health care and health insurance, but enough of us do that it likely cost your favorite see-you-next-Tuesday enough states to lose the election.

Anonymous Attorn July 12, 2017 6:29 PM

"Wrong again Attorn. I refuted you when you tried to claim the President could be impeached for trivial reasons...aka toilet paper roll. You then lied and doubled down, trying to pretend you were talking about non-trivial reasons."

I'm not sure you actually understood what I said. So, this is easy to clear up. Do you agree that a president can be impeached for non-criminal reasons, for what the congress determines is dereliction of duty?

Anonymous andon July 12, 2017 6:31 PM

No...I'm right. A president (and judge) can be impeached for non-criminal offenses including dereliction of duty.

isnt he ^^^ right though? i thought i heard that Congress could basically impeach for anything they wanted

Anonymous Attorn July 12, 2017 6:34 PM

"Attorn, the very fact you're promoting Obama as an expert on health care policy is just another data point hinting that you are indeed an idiot."

I didin't say he was an expert. I only pointed a commenter who said he'd never head Obama say anything of substance about healthcare policy to a video of Obama saying a great deal of substance about healthcare policy.

Anonymous Precious July 12, 2017 6:39 PM

I'm not sure you actually understood what I said.

I did understand what you said...

a president can be impeached for...dereliction of duty

The above is not what you said initially. What you initially said and to which I replied was...

A president can be impeached for not putting the toilet paper on the roller correctly.

That doesn't mean impeaching for dereliction of duty, it means the President can be impeached for the most trivial of reasons. That is why I pointed out you are stupid and ignorant of the US Constitution.

Are you ready to admit you were wrong and lied?

Anonymous Attorn July 12, 2017 6:45 PM

"That doesn't mean impeaching for dereliction of duty, it means the President can be impeached for the most trivial of reasons."

But you DID respond to my comment about dereliction of duty. In any case, let me know if I can help you with the concept of metaphor.

Anonymous Precious July 12, 2017 6:55 PM

but you did respond to my comment about dereliction of duty

Where I refuted you by pointing out your lie trying to change your statement to avoid admitting you were wrong. You pretended you were talking about dereliction of duty when you were actually claiming any trivial reason would work for impeachment.

let me know if I can help you with the concept of metaphor

No need, I have already demonstrated that I understood your metaphor correctly, since you haven't even tried to claim your original metaphor about toilet paper was referring to dereliction of duty.

And now your third lie and attempt to double down is duly noted.

Again, why? It's the president's job to conduct foreign policy, including meeting with Russians. It's the candidates' job to ferret out things that the other candidates want to keep hidden, including meeting with Russians. If Trump didn't meet with world leaders including Russians before, during and after the election, I would be upset with him.

If there is unflattering information about a candidate for public office, I want that information publicized and documented, even if there are Russians involved.

I think it looks pretty bad for Hillary, the DNC and the whole liberal movement that they have been trying to push this RUSSIANS UNDER THE BED!!!!!!!!!11 nonsense since last summer. I don't see that it's a problem for our side at all.

It's not an either/or option. Both Hillary and Trump, Jr. can look bad. And I didn't say it looks bad for Trump. I said it looks bad for Trump, Jr., who happens to NOT be President, and NOT hold public office. The reality though is that he was acting on behalf of his father's campaign. Whenever a subordinate does something unseemly, it splashes the superior with mud.

I'm not ADVOCATING for punishment. I'm simply acknowledging it looks bad - as in the appearance is unappealing. It wasn't Junior's wording that looks bad, per se. It was the solicitation for the meeting, which explicitly states that the info was coming from the Russian Government trying to help Trump win. Although that turned out to be a lie, Junior's enthusiastic reply to the statement is what is unappealing.

So, if this was all just a trap, then you have to admit they were successful in catching Junior in their trap. It does NOT follow that they have been or will be successful in catching the President in their trap.

Also, the problem doesn't come from Democrats or media. It comes from Republican Never-Trumpers who are aching to find an excuse to slip the shiv into Donald Senior. The DANGER is on the right, not the left. It's why I left the Republicans in 2006 - because they'd rather virtue signal than win.

The reality is that Trump does not yet have enough solid support in the Congress to overcome these turds on the right who want to take him down - if they can find a plausible excuse to do so.

Anonymous Precious July 12, 2017 7:05 PM

I can help you with metaphor

You can help yourself by admitting you were wrong. Or you could try to explain how not putting the toilet paper on the roll is a metaphor for the President being derelict of his serious duties instead of a metaphor for the President messing up the most trivial of things.

But FYI, lying further about your metaphor won't help you.

Sure. Only, I want Trump doing this stuff. I want him to be digging up dirt on Hillary. I want him looking for that dirt where ever Hillary's slime trail leads. I want him to be communicating with foreign powers, specifically including the Russians.

To me, this looks like a responsible candidate preparing to be a responsible president.

"opposition research" is so well-known it has a name.

If "obviously" WRONG why do all political parties do it with impunity?
If it is illegal (which I doubt) Why are they not prosecuted?

@159 That is your fourth attempt to double down Attorn. Will you go for five?

They do it to diminish signal to noise. They aren't honest, they care not for your rgetoric or dialectic.

And you diminish yourself by engaging them. Foot soldiers like us gotta have discipline. If they break our square we can't fight.

No hard feelings. Save your ammo for worthy targets.

"Is this illegal? Does getting oppo research from a foreign power count as an in-kind campaign contribution from a foreign national, one that might leave Jr. and Kushner vulnerable to criminal prosecution?"

These aholes are unbelievable. Just yesterday they were still salivating over the supposed "russian dossier" about Trump.

Blogger tz July 12, 2017 11:29 PM

They are risking a hot civil war.
We remembered 2012 Ron Paul who was Cincinatus, Cato, Seneca, Solon, and Socratese, and they trashed him and his supporters proving nice guys finish last in the GOP.
So we worked diligently and insured Trump would have enough delegates by an unchallengable margin so he would be the nominee.
And we then insured he would win the electoral college by a similar margin.
I should note Trump was a great fighter, like Patton, and we were the troops.
After we win, they try to get the electors to break their oaths. That didn't work.
Meanwhile the NeverTrumpers and such are looking for any excuse to impeach or otherwise depose Trump or have a soft coup. If they succeed, they will merely prove clearly that elections, the constitution, and everything else is for show, votes don't matter, rules don't matter, nothing matters because the swamp will have one of their anointed.
And that will mean hot war.
The only thing worse or better is to "fail to kill the king". It will ignite all the evils of the hot civil war with Trump still in office.

Blogger Harris July 13, 2017 6:26 AM

Yes. That is exactly what they are risking.

@29 " (Instead of trying to write political stories she should be at home with the kids.)"

Oh, I dunno -- do you REALLY want her raising children!? Maybe breed her and farm the kids out to non-lying, non-liberal, non-corrupt parents? (Just how much of this leftie-lib insanity and stupidity is in the genes anyway? Maybe don't even breed her?)

Anonymous Avalanche July 13, 2017 8:30 AM

@40 "What happens when Republicans in congress and elsewhere begin to express their lack of confidence in the administration"

They will run out of time -- we're VOTING THEM OUT in 2018! Buh-bye NeverTrumpers, RINOs and lefties!

We don't CARE about the Rethugs in Congress "lacking confidence" -- WE have confidence -- and WE are the God Emperor's ARMY!!

(Oh, sorry, was that touching the poop again?)

No, you're engaged in ankle-biting. You're that annoying, ill-raised kid who keeps interrupting the adults who are talking talking by pulling their pants-leg and yelling,"look at me, look at me!"

Go to your room and play with your toys. We adults are talking here.
