The construction of rhetoric

In last night's Darkstream, I noted that the most effective rhetoric tends to have something in common: it is based on mocking an aspect of the target's self-identification.

For example, the reason Social Justice Warrior is effective rhetoric that triggers the emotions of SJWs while derogatory terms like Social Justice Bully and Social Justice Crybaby do not is because "warrior" is a term that the SJWs gave themselves, and more importantly, it is how they see themselves. To hear the term used contemptuously, as an open form of mockery, is what causes the emotional pain that triggers them.

Fake News, which is arguably the most effective rhetorical term ever deployed against the media, is almost exactly the same. It is a term originally coined by the media, but stolen and deployed against them, and one that strikes at the very heart of their self-value and self-identification as devotees of truth and accuracy.

So, as an exercise, let's see if anyone can utilize this principle to come up with a rhetorical term for moderates that would serve as an alternative to Cuckservative, which is itself already an effective tag that is a play on a self-title rather than an actual one, but nevertheless strikes powerfully at the conservative's self-image as loyal and moral.

Telemoderates - because they derive their centrist opinions from broadcast television "news" owned by the 6 media corporations, which "moderate" the public debate to advertiser-acceptable norms, as dictated by the SJW-regulatory axis.

Essentially, they are mental TV dinners, lightly nuked to lukewarm.

Mediocre. Tepid. Mincing. Prim. Dainty. Querulous. Flaccid.
They are all of these. Cowardly faggots wielding fallacious arguments while clutching their pearls.

SJWs wanted to see themselves as "warriors", mocking them works because they AREN'T warriors, they overreached and lied to themselves. SJW's can be mocked using the term they created for themselves, because they claimed to be something they are not, and they know it.

But moderates appears to define themselves by what they are not, rather than what they are. Their self identifty is really "I'm not X". That's why the Left's tactics of calling them something (sexist, racist, etc.) works -- because they will bend over backwards to show they are "not X".

So they can be mocked by calling them mediocre, tepid, mincing, dainty, querulous, and flaccid. Call them pearl clutching faggots. Their response will be "No I'm not!" followed by "You're mean/vulgar/an asshole etc."

So maybe: PCFs. Pearl clutching faggots.

Guardians of the Galaxy? Really people? If you are going that way go with Knights of the Old Republic instead. Think about it, it works. The Republic they still pretend to defend is as dead as the fictional one in the SW universe.

How about Dissenters? They are great about not liking our ideas, they don't like Socialism (or they claim they don't...) but they don't ever seem to have a position of their own, just objections and long explanations of why anyone else's ideas aren't any good.

Probably way too clever but how about Acela Globetrotters? Washington Generals don't work, remember it has to be something they might embrace until they think about it or see how it is being used. But obviously they ain't the Globetrotters, and they KNOW it, they know their purpose is to lose and thus any use of the term is ironic.

So things like The Decorum Group or The Tone Police work as moderates are proud of their tone. But you have to say it in a voice that implies that tone is all they have, i.e. no principles, no backbone.

Maybe The Tone Critics, which implies they just snipe from the sidelines.

I propose "family men".

It's family men that want to make peace with the nihilist left. Family men that just want to not make waves and live in peace. Family men who think that if they do the right thing, then that's enough to guarantee their kids a future. Family men just don't get it.

Thinking about this some more:

The qualities moderates pride themselves on having or being:

Forward Looking
Problem Solving
Non Dogmatic

So if we're looking for something like "Social Justice Warror", we start with those terms. BMRs or Bimrs (Bipartisan Middle of the Roaders), BCs or BiCs (Bipartisan Compromisers), MMMs (Moderate Middle of the Roaders), MRMs (Middle of the Road Moderates), EMMs (Extremely Moderate Moderates), EEMs (Extremely Extreme Moderates), OSM (Oh So Moderates).

We might also take a quality they're proud of, and just shorten it:
Prags for pragmatists;
Pracs for practicals;
Probs for problem solvers;
Compros for compromisers;
Centros for centrists;
Sensies for sensibles;

I like the idea of using "Bi" at the beginning, as a mockery of their supposed bipartisanship, and the suggestion of bisexuality. "Bimoderate,", "Bicenterists" or "Bicentered," "Bicompromised," "Bipractical," and "Bisensible" all have promise. "Bifective", suggesting defective, has a really nice ring.

"Cuckservative" works because it's so close to "conservative" that you instantly know who is being referred to, as well as striking at conservatives' self-image. So "moderatti" might work. Or take the end of "moderate" and something on the front to mock them with: Mincerates, Mediocrates, Muddleheaderates. For words not starting with "M," Surrenderates, Nonsenserates, Ineffecterates,

For rhetoric, my 2 winners had to be terms they might adopt themselves...

* Nice Guys (the bandit @510) - Winner. You kept trying to accessorize it, but it's the ultimate male kill shot and every female will pick up on it instantly as = sexually undesirable and creepy. Guys get it viscerally as a failure tag. Just use it as is, in quotes or as a hashtag. It's perfect.

* Safe Middle (James @322) - Could become the winner as moderates adopt it for themselves. And then you just emphasize the word "Safe" to shame them for picking safety over right/principles. If it seems sub-par because their choices are unsafe... hey, SJWs ain't warriors.

In certain cases...

* Decency Dhimmi - Mine, but didn't see its better as an immediate insult. Their #1 plea plus its consequences, all wrapped up to go in a dismissive assault on their manhood or womanhood.

* Global Patriot (Forge the Sky @278) - Effective in limited cases but then very effective.

Honorable Mentions, wouldn't go wrong using...

* Pearl-clutchers (Bellator Mortalis @609). Insulting to males and females alike. Also useful against FOPs (see below), and already in use by Kurt Schlichter.

* Defenders of All Virtue per Dove @284 - Hard mockery, gains extra heft if it's also shortened to "DAVs," which could also be seen as short for "Davos" or "Davoisie" to swipe at the globalist predator class. DAV is already in the Urban Dictionary as a relatively cool geek, a cool person... and "Deep Anal Visit," which just adds to both the chances of self-identification and the later hilarity.

Conservakillers: Since so many ideas were spawned, if you want an alternative weapon against conservatives....

@200: FOP (A_Lurker @200, but change meaning to Fail On Purpose). Winner. FOP cuts right to the heart of their Low-T affectations, and Fail On Purpose conveys treason and bad faith while describing a common behavior. They can't help but be insulted, and the failures are already an uncomfortable awareness in their heads. Mainstream this as a parallel to cuckservative for adoption outside the Alt-Right.

Also liked Aeoli Pera @171: Runservatives and @180 Failservatives

Finally, thanks for the insights to:

* @117 Cail Corishev re: fear as their base, and @257 for correctly IDing the exercise target as moderates not conservatives.
* @531 Ominous Cowherd re: their immediate outrage is the test.
* @555 swede re: it's about self-image not consequences.
* @609 Bellator Mortalis re: core of moderate self-identity being a "not-X".
* @153 Emmett Fitz-Hume for humor: "Although, whoever brought up Steeler's Wheel now has Stuck in the Middle With Jew running through my head constantly. Thanks."

Moderates respond poorly to rhetoric directed at them (to say nothing of the difficulty in coming up with good nicknames for bland people who don't particularly stand out in any way). Cuckservative and SJW work because they attack core values of distinguishable partisans. There's nothing similar to attack in a moderate. You win the moderates by shifting the overton window. That means attack the cucks and SJWs and make the moderates look more and more extreme by comparison with the old status quo. They will then move to the new normal on their own, like they did with gay marriage.

He lives in Italy. He is:

Blogger Megamerc July 04, 2017 5:52 AM

Several I liked and why:

Judas-Americans - Really pulls from the story of Judas betraying Jesus with a kiss for silver and puts it in context of American politics. Most moderates are probably Christian, or at least familiar with Christian stories. That one will bite.

Progressive Lefter's Lonely Orphans Club (or Lonely Orphans Club) - Orphans belong to nobody, and lonely orphans try so hard to get people to like them. Adopt me please! But they'll do anything for the left.

Bossy Middle Schoolers - We all knew that kid in middle school who wanted everyone to get along by doing what he/she said, and who eventually cried if you didn't, pleading with everyone that "the teacher will get mad if you keep fighting, just let him have your toy!" Also plays on moderates'"middle" school of thought.

New Native Americans - They'll totally win that war. Prize is a reservation. And they are totally native--new too.

Runner ups:

Moderate Know-it-alls (the wise ones ALWAYS do nothing, wu-wei guys)
Sincere Flimflammers (you know, cuz swindles are so much better when sincere)
Peaceful Lemmings (can't everyone just get along and go with the flow?)
Midiots (middle + idiots)
Fair and Impartial Traitors (they carefully weighed all the data before betraying everyone)

A veritable swarm of bowtie-clad, pearl-clutching Respectacles who read the op-eds of the Carlos Slim and Jeff Bezos blogs with the avidity of an aspiring actress searching for her name in a review of a drama club production? Blogger Gapeseed July 04, 2017 9:45 AM

There are some clever comments here, but nothing seems to pack the sting of cuckservative or social justice warrior.

I think the effectiveness of rhetoric depends in large part on the target, and moderates are harder to roil because they are far less emotionally invested than progs or conservatives. Basically, the culture war doesn't interest them, so they adopt a split the difference strategy in the hope that they aren't dragged in by either side. They'll take some flak from both sides for being quislings but will gladly pay for the occasional barb in order to pursue other topics that interest them more.

Blogger Shawnesy July 04, 2017 10:46 AM

The more that I think about it the more I think that "Bowtie" should be used. It mocks them for posing as common man types but we really know they're from a class of sheltered, entitled idiots who have no clue about and want little to do with life on Main St.

The best part is that you can mix it up a lot: Bowtie Republicans, Bowtie Conservatives, Bowtie Democrats, Bowtie Liberals, the Bowtie Class, the Bowties, "you're lecturing us from your Bowtie Pedestal", etc.

You can tie Democrats and Republicans together so easily that even Low Information voters would get it.

The irony is that they are always [claiming to be] seeking the truth, yet never seem to actually find it, or be able to recognize or accept it when they do. They are perpetually looking for that greater truth, and will therefore never accept anything as true no matter how much evidence they are provided.

Open-minded.... garbage in / garbage out.

The key is to lead with what they like, and the kill shot is following it by calling them out for what they are:

Principled Losers

High-Minded Losers

Middle of the Road ==> Yellow-Striped Ones (i.e. cowards)

Principled Surrender-Monkeys

Civilized Losers

Polite Losers

Compromisers with evil

Polite Appeasers of Evil

Nothing, really.

So they are Nothings. You're not a moderate, you're a nothing. A moderate position is a nothing position. A moderate republican is a nothing republican.

Way late and will probably never even be ready.

What we are looking for is a derisive term for someone who acts like one thing but chooses to be abused by that which he ostensibly stands against.

I propose "Peggies"

It's amazing how many of your commenters still think good rhetoric is just making insults or puns for people that already agree with you. Like RINO is used by the cucks. I like the suggestions of Respectables and True Conservatives. Conformatives is good too, but not really rhetorical in the same way as SJW.

Virtue Signallers

The Safety Patrol - I like the idea of comparing them to little kids that are supposed to police other little kids.

Something involving "sportsmanship" - playing by the rules. Just not sure how to construct it well.

Eventually-Trumpers (instead of never-trumpers)

Moral Police (looks good when juxtaposing with republican scandals)

The Nice Guys/The Good Guys

White Knights - this is how they see themselves, but would make them cluck at the racist meaning too.

Principled Defenders

Non-partisan Diplomats.

I think diplomat describes their self-identification as a moderating influence like the SJW thinks they are warriors for justice.

Non-partisan is a placeholder, trying to think of a suitable adjective that captures the moderate's inability to choose sides, which he sees as a virtue.

Bonus acroynym: NPD

Global Nationists would drive the multi-cultural globalists mad because it comes close to calling them nationalists by identifying their singular nation.

Blogger cloom July 12, 2017 1:05 PM

A sub-class of moderates, so they think, are the homosexuals. They claim themselves victims of extreme oppression, thus deriving their moderation self-identity.

Call them homosexualists, instead of the liberal's alphabet labels, so as to isolate them like a political party which they chose, rather than letting them claim victim status, like a race or handicap, which is not chosen.
