When evidence is not "evidence"

The media's "fact-checkers" are no more reliable, or credible, than the very media whose reputation they are attempting to restore.
It’s important to remember that Band’s email was sent privately, with little expectation it would be aired publicly. On the one hand, that might indicate he would be more open about possible conflicts. But he was also feuding with Chelsea Clinton and so might have been inclined to exaggerate or embellish his concerns.

Even the email, at face value, does not justify the hyperbolic news coverage. There was no reference to foundation monies, just “resources.”

At the same time, the foundation, the family and the wedding planner deny the claim made in the email. This was a major social event with 450 guests, something that has to run on clockwork — at great cost. The wedding planner paid the bills and submitted one bill to the Clinton family.

We can’t really award Pinocchios here, since no specific person repeated this allegation. But we can fault the news reporting — and label this as a claim lacking any evidence. Readers (or their friends) who viewed this as the “last straw” about Clinton corruption need to be more careful consumers of the news.

No Evidence
In other words, documentary evidence is not evidence because "money" is a subset of "resources". That's an attempted bait-and-switch almost worthy of Richard Dawkins and midwit atheists who claim that documentary evidence and eyewitness evidence is not evidence because it is not scientific evidence.

Almost.

This demonstrates why the media's rhetoric is so often ineffective. In this case, it is pseudo-dialectic based on a foundation of pedantry and deception.

They decide what is evidence on the basis of the Narrative.

What a grotesque spectacle, and by that I mean Chelsea's wedding. Never, since Gremlins 2: The New Batch, has a bride looked more off-putting.

She looks like the unnatural offspring of Incitatus and Alfred E. Neuman. How much rohypnol and Viagra did they have to ply the poor groom?

Blogger Shimshon July 12, 2017 6:12 AM

@2 Clasping one's hands together is striking an odd pose for a wedding picture. Like he's recoiling from something. His "bride," perhaps?

> There was no reference to foundation monies, just “resources.”

What resources does a foundation have that don't involve money? Staff are paid for their time with foundation money (I can't see anyone volunteering to work the wedding). Buildings are rented or purchased with foundation money. What else is there?

Blogger Mr.MantraMan July 12, 2017 6:27 AM

I wish this was the biggest story out there

Anonymous Steve July 12, 2017 6:30 AM

Shimshon - the poor bugger. Prometheus had a kinder fate. If it was my son, I'd have hired the A-Team or Dog the Bounty Hunter to get him out of that wedding. Then we'd have high-fived and gone out for blizzards.

Blogger Shimshon July 12, 2017 6:52 AM

Steve, as Obi Wan might say, "That's no bride."

Blogger ZhukovG July 12, 2017 6:55 AM

The wedding makes more sense when viewed from a somewhat Medieval perspective. Connections made, boxes checked etc...

Blogger Shimshon July 12, 2017 7:04 AM

@8 ZhukovG That's more my thinking. In 2010, it seemed the Clintons could only continue the ascent. They all must've assumed even then that her rise was inevitable. But that was as high as it got.

Blogger pdwalker July 12, 2017 7:09 AM

@6 Steve, the groom made his deal with the devil. No need to feel sorry for him.

Blogger 4499 July 12, 2017 7:11 AM

Looks like the groom said "Beetlejuice" one too many times.

I believe we should refer to a collective group of journalists as a "coven." As in, "a coven of journalists."

Anonymous Avalanche July 12, 2017 7:26 AM

Quotes from the article:

"...does not justify the hyperbolic news coverage.
The only U.S. newspaper that reported the story was the New York Post...
The story also was picked up by British tabloids, Fox News, Russian news agencies and various right-leaning websites. ...
But otherwise the story did not get mentioned on other networks or newspapers, except for reference to it by conservative columnist Hugh Hewitt on MSNBC."

One of these things is not like the others. One of these things doesn't belong.

"Hyperbolic"? I dunna theenk this word means what you theenk it means....

Future power/money-career for a dweeby male lined right up! Which one is the other one's "handler" -- or is a complementary mgmt deal?!

To quote Henry Kissinger (referring to women I suppose), power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.

I didn't realize there was such an artifact as a -12 Ring of Homeliness. Family heirloom, perhaps?

I'd much prefer hypergolic news coverage. Burn it all with fire, then burn the ashes.

Readers (or their friends) who viewed this as the “last straw” about Clinton corruption need to be more careful consumers of the news.

This was all about salvaging a few votes of people who should have been solid for the Dem nominee. The "fact" checker is acting as a lictor in the forum.

Blogger Robert Divinity July 12, 2017 8:22 AM

"Fact checkers" are nothing more than "enforcers." There was a half-hearted attempt at ombudsmen that started in the Eighties and early Nineties. They acted as intermediaries between readers and the editorial staff, and even they were mostly defensive. The earliest forms of alternative media had cast doubt on the propaganda organs as far back as then.

Ombudsmen were followed by fact checkers with the advent of the digital age. Suddenly any reader could fact check, so print propaganda needed someone to cast doubt on public critics. The diminution of media influence and loss of monopoly is the greatest threat to date of communist subversion. It's almost as big (if not bigger) of a threat as Trump himself.

Statement From the Office of Donald Trump, Jr.: For Immediate Release to All News Organizations
Also CNN

Mr. Trump, Jr.:

"The meeting I had with the Russian lawyer during the campaign was completely innocent.

We simply discussed my father selling Putin another 20% of America's uranium supplies while I would be giving speeches in Moscow for half-million dollar payments to the Trump Foundation.

Additionally, our campaign manager would become business partners with Putin in the energy business and accept million-ruble payments from Putin. If caught, those assets could be secretly transferred to a family member. And other family members could lobby for Sanctions Relief on behalf of Putin's Sberbank.

We also secretly conveyed a promised the Russians to be more flexible after the election on missile defenses in Poland.

Furthermore, we cut a secret deal with Putin: if he would help give us political cover with the Iran Deal, and supply our Iranian friends with uranium and missile defenses to protect their nuke factories, we would, in return, allow Russia to run amok in the Middle East and establish military bases there for the first time since America ran them out in 1973.

All these practices--and more!--are all standard, widely-accepted and approved practices in Washington, D.C..

They are completely unremarkable, commonplace collusions and occurrences that require no investigation whatsoever.

In fact, they are the hallmark of Good Government and All That Is Decent, Pure, Good and True(tm).

When Democrats do it."https://donsurber.blogspot.com/2017/07/cnns-cuomo-not-embarrassed-as-russia.html?showComment=1499780657297&m=1#c6896597389416688209

I looked up John Coleman the other day. The FIRST THING that pops up on Google is a Snopes "fact check": "Weather Channel co-founder denies climate change" FALSE.

Right under that agitprop are dozens of videos of him denying global warming. The Snopes weasel:

"Claim: Weather Channel co-founder John Coleman provided evidence that convincingly refutes the concept of anthropogenic global warming."

They weren't convinced you see, so he might as well as never said it.

It's [loss of media monopoly on info] almost as big (if not bigger) of a threat as Trump himself.

It is bigger - it is what allowed Trump.

``Fact checkers'' like Snopes as lictors? As in ``Snopes lict the booger off the window?'' If it's supposed to be as in ``guarding Authority,'' they're failing.

@Robert Divinity

"Ombudsmen were followed by fact checkers with the advent of the digital age. Suddenly any reader could fact check, so print propaganda needed someone to cast doubt on public critics."

An interesting take on it. Perhaps more and more people have begun to realize that the legacy media serve as secondary sources at best, and that the proper attitude is to remain agnostic to any of their claims unless and until you have actually researched them yourself. So the "fact check" meme is an attempt to short circuit that process. "You don't have to bother, goy-- we'll double check it for you."

the "jew media cartel"

Anonymous Franklin Jefferson July 12, 2017 12:47 PM

What a humiliating thing for a "fact checker" to publish. It was more important to him to publicly signal loyalty to the corrupt Clinton Foundation than to make any sense. Money was directly referenced twice in the single sentence about "resources." (Paid to campaign, paying taxes). No one involved even denied the allegations. Not Brand, not Podesta, not Chelsea, not her parents, etc. Any legitimate fact checking org would have fired this guy for even submitting this.

The media establishment is so stupidly insular that a high school kid puts them all to shame in tracking down Secretary Mattis and getting an interview (and a really good one too):

http://www.newser.com/story/245494/how-a-high-school-newspaper-scored-an-interview-with-the-defense-secretary.html

and the interview itself:

http://mihsislander.org/2017/06/full-transcript-james-mattis-interview

Next time anyone tries to tell you about the "professionalism" of the Legacy Media, let them know a high school student showed them how its really done. Too bad President Trump does not call out this student as an example of how real journalism is done (and it would be hilarious to have the White House call him at the next WH press briefing to give him the first question).

Anonymous Eduardo the Magnificent July 12, 2017 10:03 PM

What other possible "resources" could they have used other than money? Gold bullion? Cattle futures? Sacrifices to Baphomet?
