A presidential pardon

President Trump Pardons Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Today, President Donald J. Trump granted a Presidential pardon to Joe Arpaio, former Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. Arpaio's life and career, which began at the age of 18 when he enlisted in the military after the outbreak of the Korean War, exemplify selfless public service. After serving in the Army, Arpaio became a police officer in Washington, D.C. and Las Vegas NV and later served as a Special Agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), formerly the Bureau of Narcotics. After 25 years of admirable service, Arpaio went on to lead the DEA's branch in Arizona.

In 1992, the problems facing his community pulled Arpaio out of retirement to return to law enforcement. He ran and won a campaign to become Sheriff of Maricopa County. Throughout his time as Sheriff, Arpaio confirmed his life's work of protecting the public from the scourges of crime and illegal immigration. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now eighty-five years old, and after more than fifty years of admirable service to our Nation, he is worthy candidate for a Presidential pardon.
Good on the God-Emperor. This sends an important signal to the pro-American movement.

The biggest problem President Trump has is the hatred of the corporate Republicans.

This also sends a clear signal that he's not shy about using the power vested unilaterally in the presidency. If they don't read it as a clear warning they're freaking idiots.

While the President's life is a lot easier with the support of a parliamentary majority, he's far from powerless without it, and he has a massive bully pulpit with which to do them immense electoral damage.

Styx says:

Trumps pivot:
1. Shed "fringe" cabinet.
2. Negotiate with insiders (negotiator in chief.)
3. Retain border wall/trade/taxes as core issues.
So basically, my "money president" prediction is also coming true. He will fixate on these issues.
Senate GOP gets watered down healthcare fix, Trump gets wall/NAFTA renegotiation. Dems get nothing but confused.

Maybe Trump isn't /ourguy/ after all. He's as close as we'll ever get though.

Depends upon why Gorka has resigned.

Trump may be figuring that cycling through his officials and seeding them out (like Bannon into Breitbart) may be the better strategic maneuver. It's not like there aren't thousands of highly qualified Americans eager and willing to help Trump to the best of their abilities.

Blogger Phelps August 25, 2017 9:35 PM

Blogger Frank Brady August 25, 2017 9:37 PM

Donald Trump achieved his success as a delegator, not a hands-on "doer". Successful executives surround themselves with the most qualified experts they can find and rely upon them to make day-to-day decisions and to formulate decision options for the executive's consideration at the policy level. As his critics are quick to point out, Donald Trump had no previous experience in government as an executive. Understandably, he decided to apply the same formula that worked so well for him in the business world to the Presidency; hire the best possible experts and put them to work.

Trump's problem was that he needed experts in complex and unfamiliar fields of federal government policy. He instructed his campaign team to find those experts and, as this article explains, "Trump Team's Go-To Vetting Process Was 'A Quick Google Search'". Not surprisingly, Google's "best possible experts in the fields of federal government policy" all turned out be denizens of "The Swamp".

This would be funny if the result was not so tragic. While the fifth possibility does not put us or the world in a better situation, it does at least offer some hope that Donald Trump is simply an honest man who has been trapped by his decision formula and dishonest advisors. Unfortunately, the explanation does not provide a clear path to a peaceful solution.

See http://gatetoliberty.blogspot.com if you would like to see more on this. This describes a factor that has caused me to rethink my anger at the President's behavior. I think it explains a great deal.

Breaking: Sebastian Gorka Resigns From Trump Administration
AUGUST 25, 2017 By Mollie Hemingway
Sebastian Gorka is resigning his post as Deputy Assistant to President Trump, multiple sources familiar with the situation have told The Federalist.

In a blunt resignation letter, the national security and counterterrorism expert expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the Trump administration. “[G]iven recent events, it is clear to me that forces that do not support the MAGA promise are – for now – ascendant within the White House,” Gorka wrote. “As a result, the best and most effective way I can support you, Mr. President, is from outside the People’s House.”

Anonymous Looking Glass August 25, 2017 9:40 PM

@21 VFM #7634

There's also the subtle issue that Trump needs to remain the Lightning Rod. This isn't some small-level issue; it's a key part of the Strategic Media War. Further to that end, he also needs significant help outside of the WH that will burn away the debris.

The other thing is that Trump is clearly taking a "Kitchen Cabinet" approach to his advisers. Being in or out of the WH isn't like the old days. People forget he keeps the portrait of Pres. Jackson around for a reason. Along with going out of his way to give remarks at the 250th birthday celebration.

Trump is operating like a Boss Character that absorbs damage and then returns it on his enemies. The MSM only has to stop attacking for the approach to no longer work. Issue? They can't. They *cannot* stop themselves. That's the massive strength of the approach.

Yup... sounds like a near-carbon copy of Bannon's resignation. That would support my take on what Trump is trying to do. After all, being a senior White House official doesn't really amount to much if the President has already figured out what's what.

Cohn has apparently already submitted his resignation letter (though that doesn't mean all that much in any WH), but I recall a point I made a while ago.

"But, DJT, Cohn is an idiot. Why did you hire him?"
"Exactly."

Trump knows how to deal with the Vampire Squid.

I have long considered "Mueller is secretly investigating the Clinton foundation rather than attacking Trump" to be a theory simply too good to be true, but this is a bit difficult to square with the theory that he is just out to attack Trump. I'm sure that if he was just a Clinton proxy to attack Trump that the word would be put out that nothing Clinton gets subpeona'd, if only to ensure there's no risk of things leaking out that shouldn't after they are collected. (Plus as the non-Left media slowly grows stronger and stronger, the Left and the Clintons will resume needing message discipline. They've actually been practicing it fairly well anyhow, I think, but for a long time it was sorta optional because the media would ecstatically fall over themselves to be the ones to bury it the hardest. It's slowly-but-surely ceasing to be optional for them. *)

I still have to admit I'm in the "that theory is too good to be true" camp, but I'll concede my position that he is really is an attack on Trump has taken a hit here.

*: While the non-Left media is still not capable of driving a narrative on its own well enough, I have noticed as I cruise the other leftwingish bits of the net, that the Left is now forced to propagate talking points out to its followers to chant at anyone who raises certain issues for things that it would much rather have simply pretended entirely never happened at all. It may not be much, but it is definitely a crack in the monolith.

In similar news, while I'm at it, this is sort of interesting: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15101668 Reading a community gestalt is hard, but in the last 5 years or so Hacker News has turned hard left overall, and to see Hacker News basically come to the consensus that a white man is probably being harassed under the cover of a Code of Conduct is quite interesting. If it weren't for double standards.....so let's examine the characters and histories of Obama / Clinton era pardonees and quickly move to a conclusion of whether this person could immediately be rejected because he's much worse. I hold, he cannot. There is undeniably a political component to his prosecution, and arguably to his conviction.
Second: Whether you like him or not, many of his constituents are steadfast in their support. Whether you like him or not, he's 85 years old and in imperfect health. Again - against the sliding scale range of past pardonees, where does this man's character land. Is he worse than a convicted pedophile, or better? I contend he is no outlier. And I am no supporter of Sheriff Joe. It's high time we started replacing rhetorical invective with constructive didactic dialog.

Blogger Cail Corishev August 25, 2017 11:05 PM

@45 krymneth,

I think a full investigation and prosecution of the Clinton cabal is still too good to be true, and some kind of stalemate or compromise is more likely. But I'm convinced Mueller hasn't really been investigating the Trump/Russia thing for a while. It doens't take that long to investigate nothing, and we've known it was nothing for months. So he's been digging into other areas where the investigation led him. Several MSM outlets started signaling a few weeks ago that the Russia narrative should be dropped. There's also something out there I don't fully understand yet, about the Podestas recently doing some kind of retroactive filing with the DoJ about Russian connections.

That doesn't mean it's going to lead all into Pizzagate and Haiti and every criminal aspect of the Clinton Foundation (though I hope it does), but there's a lot there to choose from. Bring in the Awans, who had access to the files of 80 different Democrats, and no one really knows what dirt they might have had on whom in both parties. An investigation that sticks to fraud and mishandling state secrets would be huge all by itself.

Bottom line: I think Trump keeps his promises, or at least tries to. I don't think "Lock her up" was just campaign fodder, and I don't think he's forgotten it. The rest follows.

BOMBSHELL: New Evidence Suggests Charlottesville Was A Complete SET-UP

At least one law enforcement officer in Charlottesville, VA has come forward to clear his conscience and reveal the truth — or at least his version of it — that what went down in the city was not only condoned by city governance but was intentional, orchestrated and may have been planned as long ago as May.

The as-yet unidentified police officer has said that the Charlottesville P.D. were specifically instructed to bring the radical left and right wing groups together to instigate violence and then to told to “stand down” once violence ensued in a deliberate effort to ignite a race riot. Hear his words:

1. Already convinced they know the truth.
2. Irrational.

For some reason, it's a hill that many of America's enemies have decided they'd like to die on, so they should be obliged.

@66 James: "good luck with that "constructive didactic dialogue" with someone that doesn't already accept your opinions, like you, or respect you."

Heard this expression on a recent Sargon video to the effect that you cannot have a discussion with someone who demands the last word, because that means that person gets to decide the truth.

That's just a bare minimum baseline for our nation to be considered collectively sane.

There's a huge difference between having your nuts blown off in the line of duty and having your nuts voluntarily cut off because you have a serious mental deficiency that causes most sane people to rightly question your judgment.

Not sure why you feel it's a bare minimum to change course. It was a bare minimum to say no in the first place.

Usually some scumbag gets pardoned at the last minute.

I'm wondering that too. Usually these are all done in the lame duck phase (with some exceptions, no doubt), especially anything politically controversial.

Once again, rare courage shown.

At the end of every Godfather movie the Moe Green type characters take a fatal shot to the eye or other essential body part. I'm expecting a lot of fireworks near the end of the GE's first term. The sequel will follow in 2020.

Yep. Which may be even more important than the other benefits.

And the veterans, though there's some overlap there.

They have to move quickly on these things because if they schedule it 6 months out, half of their model trannies will be dead.

into the El Mirage, Arizona child sex-crime cases mishandled by Maricopa County
Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office

Are you saying Sheriff Joe didn't punish child raping wetbacks enough for raping wetback kids? Because wetback parents being OK with it makes it harder to press charges.

Now if Trump can just tell his daughter and hubby to go back to designing clothes and hustling the 401ks of little old ladies

Even better make them ambassadors to Israel

Cohn knifes Trump in the back publicly, and Gorka is the one who is out of the White House.

TRUMP's best action in his first 100 days was handing out the sunglasses from THEY LIVE.

You are either A government agent or an idiot Must have never meet any govt workers if you think that's exclusive.

Jessica Sandton everyone loyal to Trump that he has your back no matter what, even if what you are doing is illegal

Oy Vey a jew judge said he was bad because he arrested more wetbacks breaking border laws than Canadians. Groids in Philly attack the statue of a former Chief of Police Rizzo because blacks commit more crime

For something like Clinton's pardon of (((Marc Rich))) while he was a fugitive from justice, yeah. But Barry started in right from the beginning.

https://www.justice.gov/pardon/obama-pardons

Obama granted executive clemency— pardons or commutation of sentence)— to 1,927 people. Of the acts of clemency, 1,715 were commutations (including 504 life sentences) and 212 were pardons. Obama granted more commutations than the past thirteen presidents combined.

Interesting piece by Don Surber on the larger implications of Arpaio's pardon:
In pardoning Arpaio, President Trump sent a message to those under investigation by two dozen Democratic lawyers -- the biggest boondoggle since Solyndra.

The message of his pardon is: Donald Trump has your back.

Nobody will be hung out to dry like Scooter Libby. (And Trump ought to pardon him too.)

This is terrible news for the Swamp Critters.

No one will roll over on Trump to avoid Mueller's charges, because people now know Trump can and will pardon them if they remain loyal.

Trump just nuked the Mueller Inquisition

Blogger DonReynolds August 26, 2017 6:13 PM

Obama passed out nearly two thousand pardons in his eight years in office. Nearly all were to people who richly deserved to be in Federal prison, some of whom have already re-offended and been returned to their cell. The Leftist Liberals never uttered a peep in protest.

The first Trump pardon went to a man, widely admired in this country as a Patriot and Faithful Servant, whose only crime was Contempt of Court, when ordered to look the other way when Federal crimes were committed. The Leftist Media screams like they were gut shot and claims it is a "direct assault on the Constitution".

This was not a pardon, it was a rescue mission, to recover an 85 year old Patriot before he could be crucified. Now he is safe within our own lines. Yes, this man was worth saving.

He's really 85? I would have guessed 20 years younger, good for him.

When I saw the first complaints about Arpaio, it was about his using 'tent cities' to house inmates, I laughed. From Dec '90 to Jun '91 in SWA (South West Asia aka Saudi Arabia/Kuwait/Iraq) a tent was a blessing. At first it was cold, very cold especially away from the coastal areas where the temps were moderated by the water. Once out in the middle of nowhere, day temps of 70F would be 25F by 0400. Once things started moving, most slept on the ground under trucks or on the ground. The Humvees we got on arrival didn't have any covers, so it was under or outside in the rain and cold. When we returned to Saudi, the tents were like heaven! Wood floors, heaters, what else could you ask for! Then April turned to May, and the daytime temps would hit 115f-120f. Trying to rest after lunch was not much fun. It was 115f outside, the tents were canvas, green, and even with the sides up, it wasn't much better than being out in the sun. Flies would come and crawl up your nose or in your ears while you just sweated and sweated away. Thank god for the night, the temps in the 80's felt like the North Pole compared to the day. The worst was being on nights. You worked all night and then had to get some rest during the day. When you turn off fans because it only make you fell hotter you know it's really warm. The night shift were like zombies, unable to concentrate due to days of sleep deprivation. I have to say that even after another trip to the area in 2k3, I felt more uncomfortable after losing electricity for weeks after hurricanes in 2004 in FL. The humidity was brutal at night, no fans, just bugs everywhere while you tried to sleep. I'd take the desert over the tropics any day, at least the temps drop at night and very little humidity.
I had it pretty good in SWA, both in 90-91 and in 2003. Many lived a much harder and shorter life than me. I was lucky. When I see people who have lived a life so privileged as to equate living in a tent 'torture', I think of the those I called friends who never got to flush a toilet again or fell the cold air from an A/C unit keep them comfortable. Those who live a life of real privilege can't imagine what it takes to keep them free to enjoy what many no longer can.

Blogger Abyssus Invocat August 26, 2017 11:52 PM

People who say that Potus was "technically" able to pardon Arpaio drive me batshit. The Presidential pardon power is plenary, specific and deliberate. It's there to protect against exactly the kind of political prosecution that happened in Arpaio's case.

They have.

@55 There was a pic from Phoenix the other day of a handmade sign that said "Hurry Up, Mueller".

I keep wanting the God Emperor to announce: "okay Mueller, you have 30 more days then I'm shutting you down! There is nothing there, and if you haven't found a SINGLE THING in (how many?) months, time to shut it down."

Anonymous Avalanche August 27, 2017 10:16 AM

When you(r country) has actually slipped below the surface, just getting your NOSE above the water is absolutely A WIN! Take a deep breath, and realize we're surfacing.. .oh-so-slowly, but better than drowning!
