Brains vs credentials

It was rather amusing witnessing a brief Twitter encounter between NN Taleb and the British historian Mary Beard. I commented on it.

Supreme Dark Lord @voxday
It's hilarious to watch @nntaleb  steamrolling the pretentious know-nothing @wmarybeard.  It's what happens when brains meet credentials.

Call me many thing. Pretentious may be No nothing, no. What is your view prof taleb?

Supreme Dark Lord‏ @voxday
It's all relative. The point is that you are resorting to rhetoric and attempting to debate via posturing. That doesn't cut it with Taleb.

She was still great in Tales From The Crypt

Blogger Thanks, J. August 02, 2017 1:45 PM

I always remember Mary Beard discussing how she was "raped" on a train or something during a trip in Italy when she was a young woman. It didn't seem like a rape based on her account; she was played fair and square is all. Anyway that was one of countless troubling instances several years ago where an old woman would publicly claim she was raped (when she was doable) back in the day. It seemed like a new badge of victimhood "honor" for these feminist wenches.

I don't know the logic if crazies are attracted to cats, or if they are the only ones that can tolerate them. I do believe that without other grounding in your life, a cat will drive one slowly crazy.
Case in point: I own a cat, for the purposes of reducing the rodent population. Recently, when it rained, I opened the door to let him in out of the rain. He sits under a tree and howls at the open door. Then when I go out in the rain myself to pick him up, he runs to the door, and has to wait at the (now closed) door in the rain while I come back. I almost threw him back outside. Completely irrational. If that was my primary source of social interaction, I'd quickly develop a warped view of the world as well.

Wikipedia describes her thusly:

"Winifred Mary Beard, OBE, FSA, FBA is an English scholar and classicist. "

She has three, three three-letter acronyms after her name. That's an academic hat trick, and clearly she's at least three times as smart as the rest of us.

Here in God's country, cats work for a living. I've known farmers to lose their minds over the loss of a batch of mouser kittens (they are sometimes eaten by Tom cats or the occasional rogue dog). You might as well take a match to the barn. Do you know how fast rodents can reproduce with heaps of feed-grain and piles of bedding? Real fast.

So I pity the skillful animals so vital to our food supply and bubonic-free way of life who've been katnapped by pussy-hat land mammals. It's sad, it's real sad.

I worry about dogs now too. From what I've seen the crazy women want an animal they can drag with them everywhere. They're dumping their cats, slapping bogus service vests on conscripted canines and turning those poor animals into proxy children. You see more doggy day-cares and bark parks here in the metro outer ring than anything (human) child related. It's chilling.

Anonymous Scott August 02, 2017 4:16 PM

@37 A couple years ago, someone I know in Los Angeles saw Bruce Jenner (in drag) walking around his neighborhood pushing a stroller. In the stroller was a dog.

When he realized it was Jenner, he yelled out, "Is that Bruce Jenner?" Bruce was not happy to not be addressed as Caitlyn.

I had a 6' royal python in high school, named Ecthelion. I'm embarrassed that I gave a reptile such a noble name. Anyway, snakes are possibly the most boring pets ever. The only thing Eccy was good for was scaring teachers -- I had some fun wearing it to school like a scarf. When the novelty of that wore off, I gave the stupid thing away. Vox IS more civil than most of the Ilk.

as a fer instance, i called out a churchian on Youtube the other day. in a commentary on Fury Road, he had presented a hypothesis comparing the pregnant one of the escaping wives to the woman and child of Rev 12.

he then asserted that Joe represented the Dragon, who is seeking to destroy the child.

one problem:
Joe is the father of that child.

to compare Wife, fetus and Immortan Joe to Rev 12 requires that -
the Wife be the Woman clothed in Sun, a picture of Mary
the fetus be Jesus
...
the Dragon to be the father of Jesus, Immortan Joe

only, the Dragon is a representation of Lucifer.

i think we can all see the problem here.

and lo, there was much butthurt in that thread.

and the churchian never did apologize for characterizing Jesus as the Son of Satan.

"What is your view prof taleb?"

A veiled attempt to bolster her reputation. She attempts to place the onus on her opponent to defend her reputation. This only (or mostly) just works for women when dealing with men, as its a call for help from a female needing protection; shes actively asking him to white knight for her. "Do YOU think I don't know anything, or is Vox a big meanie-butt?" is a simple rephrasing. Men can't get away with this. Its funny that she resorts to the plea for bolstering right off.

Blogger OGRE August 02, 2017 7:11 PM

@32 OBE is Order of the British Empire. She is most likely just a member; the higher ranked members can refer to themselves as Sir or Dame. Its not an academic credential like a Ph.D. would be, but it is a recognition of achievement. I'm not sure what the FSA and FBA mean though whether they are credentials or memberships or awards or just random letters strung together.

Yes, to be fair to the Asians in Asia, they also have dog farms like we have hog farms. It's not just stray dogs. And most of the dogs at the Asian dog markets and at the Yulin Dog Meat Festival are dead, true, but you can also buy live ones if you prefer to skin them alive yourself. Yes, live dogs are seen in grocery carts in public. Search 'asian dog eat' for instance, and don't forget to look at the images.

Indeed, if anyone uses British peerage as any kind of worthy credential just remind them of prolific pedophile and necrophiliac Sir James Wilson Vincent Savile, OBE, KCSG

If they argue, "Not all peers are like that!" mention fellow pedophile Rolf Harris CBE (stripped) and the 40 or so peers and MPs implicated in the covered-up Westminster VIP pedophile ring a few years ago.

The weight of evidence suggests that pedophilia is pretty much a requirement for any kind of position in the British establishment.

Not to blunt some fine rhetoric on a stone of dialectic, but British English diverged from American English, not the other way around, so - assuming we overlook the profound difference between archaic and modern English, Robin Hoods's accent would actually be more American than contemporary standard English, with a rhotic,"piratey" flavor:
