Google's gold, Google's rules

I don't know why anyone expected it to be any different. Google is paying for results, not research:
The New America Foundation has received more than $21 million from Google; its parent company’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt; and his family’s foundation since the think tank’s founding in 1999. That money helped to establish New America as an elite voice in policy debates on the American left.

But not long after one of New America’s scholars posted a statement on the think tank’s website praising the European Union’s penalty against Google, Mr. Schmidt, who had chaired New America until 2016, communicated his displeasure with the statement to the group’s president, Anne-Marie Slaughter, according to the scholar.

The statement disappeared from New America’s website, only to be reposted without explanation a few hours later. But word of Mr. Schmidt’s displeasure rippled through New America, which employs more than 200 people, including dozens of researchers, writers and scholars, most of whom work in sleek Washington offices where the main conference room is called the “Eric Schmidt Ideas Lab.” The episode left some people concerned that Google intended to discontinue funding, while others worried whether the think tank could truly be independent if it had to worry about offending its donors.

Those worries seemed to be substantiated a couple of days later, when Ms. Slaughter summoned the scholar who wrote the critical statement, Barry Lynn, to her office. He ran a New America initiative called Open Markets that has led a growing chorus of liberal criticism of the market dominance of telecom and tech giants, including Google, which is now part of a larger corporate entity known as Alphabet, for which Mr. Schmidt serves as executive chairman.

Ms. Slaughter told Mr. Lynn that “the time has come for Open Markets and New America to part ways,” according to an email from Ms. Slaughter to Mr. Lynn. The email suggested that the entire Open Markets team — nearly 10 full-time employees and unpaid fellows — would be exiled from New America.

While she asserted in the email, which was reviewed by The New York Times, that the decision was “in no way based on the content of your work,” Ms. Slaughter accused Mr. Lynn of “imperiling the institution as a whole.”
Now we have Fake Funding to go with Fake News, Fake Traffic, and Fake Ads. I don't have any problem with Google expecting the people it funds to obey them and sing from Google's songbook, only with the pretense that things were ever going to be otherwise.

Ah. I have worked with Slaughter personally. She's two-faced as an old penny and always willing to be picked up by any and all comers.

For these people, funding is life and life is funding. Education is a sidebar to legitimize their hustling money to stay in business. Point out any inconsistencies and they're happy to advance your career in any area far, far away from them.

I know of one industrial family that is willing to donate for charitable programs that vividly demonstrate the harm their products can do when used as intended.

I don't know of any other donors willing to make donations "against interest".

Funding and donor politics are one of the reasons I'm turned off to an academic career. It was recently revealed that a researcher at a think tank I used to work at was submitting articles under his own name that had been ghostwritten by Monsanto. I know academics who have received grants through Open Society Foundations run by Soros. They can get by writing about politically correct pablum or arcane historical subjects, but no way is anything remotely positive about nationalism or the threat of globalism getting funded.

Academia is arguably even more leftist than the mass media, at least in the latter you have sites that counter the narrative, while the former is monolithic. What else is there besides Hillsdale College and individual departments at a handful of universities? A big future project is Alt-Education, its about time that you can get a solid degree online, outside of a propaganda factory university. It may not offer degrees right away, but I'm signing up for Voxiversity day one :)

Ha! So what, he smelled bad?

Ms. Slaughter accused Mr. Lynn of “imperiling the institution as a whole.”

Well, if it wasn't the content of his work, was he perhaps a smoker and she thought he might set the place on fire? How does a worker imperil his employer if not through his work?

What a bad liar. She should have just said something about how his work didn't coincide with the "values" of the organization. That's the script most places are reading from these days.

As long as Americans govern themselves, this will eventually end. I tell my clients in response to EU's attacks on tax saving strategies they acknowledge are perfectly legal, that as long as Europeans govern themselves, there the differences, anomalies, inconsistencies between the individual tax codes that we can mine to save them taxes, will always exist. Same concept in reverse.

What has become apparent to me through the years is that disinterested opinion is not common. And the same conclusion holds for research when it comes to social policy considerations. The people who have a history of producing the desired outcome get hired. Same thing with experts in courts of law. The people who habitually side with one side or the other habitually get hired by the side they favor.

The only difference here, apparently, is that Google is more blatant. A sign of the times unfortunately.

(it appears they are being DDoSed at the moment)

What the cuckservatives and losertarians don't understand is now that Google and the rest of SV has tasted power, they won't stop until they've destroyed everything including themselves. We are watching an electronic Kristallnacht, and I almost pity those that still think any form of reasoning will work. Jews should have left Germany the day after and went anywhere that would not send them back. But most elder Rightists grew up before the post 1965 demographic shift took over where reason and evidence worked and they only had an occasional purge like Sobran (NR) or Rothbard (Cato). But the game has changed and surrender means slavery or death - of your soul if not physical. Even not to fight - you don't want to get bloody or dirty - is to surrender now. They may be capable of reason, but they can't believe they are dealing with mindless virtue-signalling death drones. They will find out the hard way.

Right now at the SJW level it requires inflicting enough emotional pain to exorcize the thought demons, but that is not overlapping with something worse.

Some people won't respond to neocortext reasoning, or mammalian brain emotion. You don't try to give an alligator or snake bad feelz.

Only physical pain - yes violence - will work against some who have no care to use violence against you. They are already moving from pepper spray to deadly weapons.

Where are the police? The National Guard? We'll see but I think it will be unsafe for white christian males in blue areas.

I don't kjnow if it was covered here in the comments, but worthy of a Blog post: 4 chan/pol has declared war on Google, #OperationGooGone - using an ad-blocker named "Ad-Nauseum"
https://adnauseam.io/

Clicks on every ad on every webpage/popup you visit, sending a false "click" (response blocked by the built in ad-blocker, nothing will show on your device) - destroys Googles business model by de-valuing the price of keywords/1,000 clicks that Google can charge, towards zero, and forces them to refund money to complaining Adwords customers. /pol has scripts that target the top selling keywords in a Google search (but never install a script from 4chan lol, write your own).
http://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2017/06/27/most-expensive-keywords

De-monetize the scum, now. Works on Firefox, Chrome, Opera. Install it and do your part to put "Do Evil" Google out of business. I hear rumors similar are in the works for Facebook and others.

No, but I am tired of the dishonest and ideologically driven witch hunts the left has been going on since the election to try and destroy anyone and anything that supports Trump in any way or even attempts to produce non leftist slanted fake/cherry-picked news.
As I noted before, when all you do is stare at the posterior of things you don't like, they all look like a**holes, a crude form of the blind men and the elephant but apropos to the current environment in the MSM and its leftist foot soldiers. They only see what they have chosen to see in the worst possible light.

Anonymous TheTruthIsNeverAcceptable August 30, 2017 2:31 PM

De-monetize the scum, now.

The left, the SJWs, the MSM just don't understand the can of worms they have opened. This whole mess can spiral down very quickly into very serious consequences: financially, socially, and physically.

Once they literally toss out the social contract that has kept the society operating, a reasonable live and let live approach and seek only to destroy what they don't like, they fracturing the very ground on which they stand.

This is becoming suicidal.

Things are certainly working a lot faster than I ever expected. Attacks like Adnausium and other, more sophisticated next generation ones could put Google down far faster.

Much like Saudi Arabia had hoped their $700 billion cash reserves would allow them to take down the Iranians and Russians by crashing the price of oil while giving them a comfortable cushion, Google may be counting on their multi billion dollar horde to cushion them against the coming upheavals.

However, the Saudis didn't fully take outside factors (US Shale Oil and fracking technology) into account, and I don't think google has any idea of just what sorts of disruptive technologies and activities are going to be rolled out against them (I know I only know and understand a small fraction of the weapons being deployed against Google and other converged companies).

As the Chinese like to say, we will live in interesting times.....
