Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Google's CEO cancels a scheduled company-wide "townhall meeting" for fear of the public knowing who is doing what there.
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai has cancelled its much anticipated meeting to talk about gender issues today. The move came after some of its employees expressed concern over online harassment they had begun to receive after their questions and names have been published outside the company on a variety of largely alt-right sites.

“We had hoped to have a frank, open discussion today as we always do to bring us together and move forward. But our Dory questions appeared externally this afternoon, and on some websites Googlers are now being named personally,” wrote Pichai to employees. “Googlers are writing in, concerned about their safety and worried they may be ‘outed’ publicly for asking a question in the Town Hall.”

Pichai was set to address the search giant’s 60,000 employees in 30 minutes in an all-hands meeting about a recent post by recently fired employee James Damore.

Several sites like this one [literally, this one -VD] has been publishing internal discussion posts and giving out information on those employees. In addition, in a move that many Googlers found already disturbing, Damore did his first major interview with alt-right YouTube personality, Stefan Molyneux (ironic, I know, since Google owns the online video giant).
It's cute they think we're not going to find out what their internal discussions concern. Google spies on us, we keep an eye on them. Seems fair.

They'll strike back soon enough. We're expecting it. My prediction is a "surprise" leak of their critics' embarrassing emails and URL histories.

Classic 4g error. Googlag is in the role of the State Military versus guerillas. They should de-escalate instead of turn more neutrals into insurgents.

I think it was good the new Chief of Diversity put out that condemnation announcement in a hasty manner.

Their position is locked in. Easier for us to maneuver. When they attack us for our views, we point out 1. the power imbalance in the left's favor, 2. the left's demonstrated intolerance and 3. who is ready and willing to offer real solutions.

Are we sure he didn't cancel it after "googling" for facts to include in the presentation about differences in gender and discovered that James Damore was right. Their own search engine failed them when looking for facts to backup their official corporate policy.

James Damore did nothing wrong.

Interesting that their own employees don't trust the company to be able to keep internal discussions private. I mean, we know they can't, but it's funny that so many of them already know it too that they had to cancel.

It's not outside hackers they're worried about, either. It's that 1/3 among them that said Damore had a point. Just think: every pink-hair is looking at the two people in the cubicles next to him and thinking, "Which one of them is it?" So much pain.

Actually the HR spreadsheet with all the compensation would be more disruptive.

One of the side problems is even Sony couldn't keep their stuff secret, and all it takes is a few frustrated firewall maintainers and log readers. I would expect most of their top coders would no better, but the diversoids would fall for the my little brony USB stick in the parking lot trick. I forgot who - I think it was a financial dept woman in RSA - RSA! - that was phished. And that is just the external threat.

The more interesting thing will be to see if they have technical problems with some of their top sites.

HB Gary found out what it is like to have hackers think you are evil. In cyberspace, everyone will hear you scream on the livestream.

Oh, and Wired's <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/internal-messages-james-damore-google-memo/>coverage</a> mentions the internal Meme GENERATOR which I assume was the infamous Meme Gender, but in this case they ended up being the same thing.

Google Moderator (AKA Dory) Launches

Last night Google released Google Moderator, a tool to organize “tech talks” or question and answer sessions. It is a free service that Google used internally, but now made public. Matt Cutts said Google calls this application Dory “after the fish who asked questions all the time in Finding Nemo).”

To me, this seems like a more interactive version of Yahoo Suggestions, which is actually a closed tool to just Yahoo feedback. Matt Cutts said Google may be using this tool for future Webmaster Chat sessions. It will allow people to submit questions and then have those involved in the session vote up user submitted questions. Seems like a great organizational tool.

Zunger has recently posted on his FB another supposed well-reasoned essay by William Pietri as to why Damore wasn't worth debating. A fellow named Owen Vajk has publicly rebutted this in an excellent post below his; perhaps if we all simply liked his rebuttal in mass quantity this would go some way to bursting Zunger's current bubble of smugness?

Vox kinda O/T, or well, not really. I was just listening to Ryan Faulk on Tara McCarthy's podcast/youtube.

Can you at some point, write about what you think the future of the Alt-Right (Or White America) will be, and/or how to get there? I'm curious your take. I get the "sense" that we are turning a corner--and that very soon, it will be as normal to be "well of COURSE I vote what's best for Whites" (like blacks or jews do), as any other group--but then I think I may just be in an echo chamber.

Ryan Faulk brought up a claim that more White Conservatives are having children than any other racial group in the US (except foreign born Hispanics). He talks about the partition/succession of/in the US, etc etc.

I have not seen your thoughts on this, per se, as far as top 5-10 trends, or top necessary things, etc. I have seen your 16 points about the Alt-Right.

Anyhow, just thought I'd ask.

When will old angry white men like you realise that your time has past? We are the future and you're dying out!

When will you acknowledge that your privilege has had consequences for disadvantaged and historically oppressed groups?

When will you apologise for the suffering you have inflicted on the world?

When will you accept that the death of whiteness, maleness and heteronormative standards of "normality" is the only way to a better and more tolerant future!

Stop being jealous of the power and magic possessed by people of colour, they have earned it through years of oppression.

Stop hating people who don't fit into your narrow gender roles. They have found freedom you only dream about.

Stop hating women, the pain caused by thousands of years of patriarchy will take thousands of years to heal.

Why do you hate tolerance? Is it because you're scared of losing your power? Do you secretly know deep down that you benefit from a system set up to give you unearned dominance?

Throw off the shackles of whiteness! Cast off the fetters of maleness! Smash the chains of heteronormative! Join with your brothers, sisters and people of no gender and all genders against the system of imperial oppression that has promoted inequality, poverty, slavery and war!

The CEO cancelled a townhall online meeting with 60,000 Google employees because people outside the company MIGHT find out what was being said. Such a waste and all for nothing. Google will never again have a private meeting with 60,000 employees. There are too many of them that would take careful notes and blab to the world.

Then the really cute part, where certain individuals were actually credited with their own contributions to this excitement, and now they fear for their own safety on the internet? What in the world can ever impact your safety on the internet? Lemmie guess....the Attention Pigs no longer crave attention because they might be called "fat" or "ugly" or "stupid", on websites they never visit, by people they do not know, without them being a party to the conversation....or being able to make a complaint. Boo Hoo. Pass the kleenex. I am about to get all misty eyed.

Random thought that might be useful for meme war. Would enough people get the meaning, without having to stop to explain, if we always refer to the Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator types as Political Officers? Because it occurs that is what they are, right out of the Soviet Army. Not even the CEO can question or overrule them, their actual purpose is political policing and they can apparently fire at will. Or in the recent case order the CEO to fire. Seems to fit. Just not sure it sings.

@70, That's probably the extension called AdNauseam. It blocks ads from being displayed, but clicks on all the ads on a page in the background.

That doesn't stop them from tracking your movement at all, and more clicks actually means more money for Google in the short run. In theory, in the long run, more clicks that don't turn into sales will hurt Google by reducing the value of using Adwords, but that's very long run. Probably better to spend one's effort spreading the word and memes, encouraging people to stop using Google altogether.

Yeah, but those words are spoken by a fat, interstellar weeaboo.

I prefer the Operative:
"If your quarry goes to ground, leave no ground to go to."

Come to think of it, he's a pretty good model in what he says:

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: [the Operative has politely asked Mal to return River] You have to open with payment.
The Operative: That is a trap. I offer money, you'll play the man of honor and take umbrage; I ask you to do what is right and you'll play the brigand. I have no stomach for games.

Or how about...

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Why? Do you even know why they sent you?
The Operative: It's not my place to ask. I believe in something greater than myself. A better world. A world without sin.
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: So me and mine gotta lay down and die... so you can live in your better world?
The Operative: I'm not going to live there. There's no place for me there... any more than there is for you. Malcolm... I'm a monster. What I do is evil. I have no illusions about it, but it must be done.

No, they are not, Wormtongue. Some of us don't preemptively surrender. And if they do, they do.

Do you really think I'm not prepared for the possibility?

And the sneaky girl? The guards have been paid off in the same coin.

There's more to the infamous passage from Juvenal's Satire VI, BTW, and it's highly relevant.

More to the point: who will be the one to throw the bolt to lock them all in?

James Damore is pitch perfect in a media messaging sense. Softly spoken, timid, a simple logical and relatable communicator. DTTTM does not apply to this kid. Watch him on Bloomberg here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4WoeOkj2Ng

Such an exquisite position of weakness compared to the big mean global conglomerate, which he openly professes to love. Like I said, pitch perfect. (My inner Xer cynicism says too perfect and is looking for the other shoe to fall, too many spy novels)

Sundar's got his work cut out for him, every single Googler sympathetic to James's point of view, IS James Damore.

Perspective is google's new artificial intelligence you can embed in your forum or comment section, to make sure everything people are allowed to say is "fair and balanced", as you can see from the above.

I played around with it the other day and figured out this censorship platform is completely converged but not very smart (Surprise, Surprise on both counts).

Example, SJW is 10% toxic and ok. SJWs is 90% toxic instant ban. Social Justice Warriors is 10% toxic again. So basically, Anita Sarkeesean and her friends are loading key words into a filter and doing a sloppy job of it.

Who is going to get fired at ABC? They actually put a clip of the Molyneux interveiw with Damore on the nightly news. There has to be a corporate policy against acknowledging Molyneux exists unless you are taking him out of context and trashing his reputation.

I think everyone would understand "Commissar", and it has a nicely menacing quasi-military feel. What would the Nazi equivalent be? Gauleiter? You know they hate Nazi references far more than Soviet references.

I find Sundar Pichai unbelievably detestable.

He comes from one of the most genuinely misogynistic countries on Earth, and I don't toss that term around lightly. Women in India are quite literally the property of men and female infanticide is the norm. Homosexuality is illegal.

Will Sundar Pichai say anything about India, and where as India's most successful and prominent expat he could make a huge difference? I am guessing that will never happen.

For Pichai and others like him, it is all about signaling his virtue. If these issues mattered to Pichai at all, he'd have a tremendous amount to say about India, which is one of the world's worst actors. Girls are killed en masse for sport and women generally aren't even permitted to drive.

In Sundar's case, use Rajah.

How about Political Oversight Officer?

If it's a woman (and it usually will be), I'm going with VP of Snacks. Rhetoric, remember. It's supposed to be true, not literal.

Blogger Wanda Sherratt August 11, 2017 9:18 AM

@99 - I think you're overstating it a bit. India's no shining light for women's rights, that's for sure, but women not allowed to drive? Maybe you're thinking of some very backward Muslim enclaves, of which there are many. But there are many Indian woman in politics, and they were led by a female prime minister, Indira Gandhi, for many years. I lived there for 3 years, and while I fully recognized how hard life was for women there, compared to Muslim women, Hindu women are FREE. Nothing is as toxic to women as Islam.

one of the most genuinely misogynistic countries on Earth

I watched some of the early seasons of The Amazing Race, and every season they would go through India. The players would be horrified by the smell and the crowding when they arrived, and try not to show it on camera. Then at some point they'd need to take a city train. India has separate trains for women, but that was a problem for boy-girl teams or girl-girl teams who didn't want to wait for a women's train. (Also they have a cameraman and soundman with them, who would probably be men and unable to go on the women's train.) So they'd get on a regular train, which was always so packed that men would be hanging off the sides, and they'd have to shove their way in. Then these American women -- usually attractive, because it's TV -- would be groped by the men smashed up against them, sometimes crying, until they arrived at their destination and could get away. I was surprised the show, which was pretty progressive, even showed it.

Companies like Google want to fill half their seats with those men, and the other half with women.

I'm sure part of the concern was a call Sundar got from legal, saying, "You do realize that everything that's said will be available in discovery, right?"

Anonymous Dan August 11, 2017 10:03 AM

@102 -- I have been to Chennai on three different occasions for a couple of weeks each time. Chennai happens to be where Sundar Pinchai is from.

I would be surprised if 1% of the drivers on Chennai's roads are women. Women can legally drive, and yet they almost never do, that is the culture. Do go yourself if you are interested in actually knowing.

Here is a fun stat for all those on this blog who are just so fond of pedophilia:
* In India, almost half of all women between the ages of 20 and 24 years were married off before the legal age of 18.
* In several Indian states, 6 in 10 girls marry as children.
http://unicef.in/Whatwedo/30/Child-Marriage

I haven't even begun on the female feticide and infanticide statistics.

Islam is misogynistic, but no I am not getting India confused with Islam.

Blogger Wanda Sherratt August 11, 2017 10:03 AM

Irony -
- Company culture claims to allow open and frank discussion
- gets a paper about blowback and exclusion to unpopular opinions
- they don't like it so they fire the guy, thus proving his point brilliantly
- now a meeting called by the firing company to have an open and frank discussion about open and frank discussions is canceled
- because people are afraid of blowback from people who don't like their opinions stated in an actual open and frank way.

Way to define lack of self-awareness and irony

I'm wondering if there is a retro-sperge among them that knows short-hand.

Anonymous Dan August 11, 2017 10:30 AM

@Wanda -- Ok, I missed you say you were there. Did you not notice that virtually all the drivers on the roads are men?

In Iran, 2/3 of the University students are women. In India, 1 in 3 women are illiterate, which is far higher than the male rate.
http://indiafacts.in/india-census-2011/literacy-rate-india-2011/

All over the world, women get more education than men. India somehow bucks this trend with dramatic female illiteracy. Probably related to the girls who are married off before finishing elementary school, to satisfy the pedophilia of Indian men.

Execrable virtue signaler Sundar Panchai will never focus on THAT.

This, but not the way he was expressing it. The purges are coming and anyone who is even suspected of not toeing the line can expect to be given the boot. So of course employees are concerned for their safety and being "outed" for daring to ask a question.
