Reminder: don't talk to the media

Jon Del Arroz didn't listen.
I didn't listen to @voxday. I gave an interview to unfriendly media. They trashed the shit out of me. Listen to Vox. I knew better. Fortunately, it's a site that has less traffic than my blog, and so I won't give them the satisfaction of linking and giving them clicks. Most won't ever see it.
The fact that there are exceptions does not mean the rule does not exist. The default position must always be "don't talk to the media". You may think you're prepared to take the heat, you may think you will somehow outwit them, but I can assure you, you are not and you will not.

See, here's the thing. I'm already on the ADL's list of 36 Hitlers. I've already been trashed around the world, everywhere from Le Monde and Entertainment Weekly to the Guardian and the New Zealand Herald. After 16 years of sporadic efforts, the media has exhausted all the tricks in its usual repertoire without being able to discredit or disqualify me. My friends and family openly joke about me being the epicenter of galactic evil, and I've made it very clear to all and sundry that I don't give a damn what they may think of my opinions one way or another.

But you haven't been through that crucible. You're not as emotionally antifragile. You're not as psychologically inured to what people think of you and your opinions. You still have friends and family and acquaintances and co-workers who would be horrified to see you described publicly as a Nazi, a racist, a sexist, a white supremacist, an anti-semite, and so forth. And that is what the media will do to you, no matter who you are, because that is what they do to everyone they don't like.

So, don't talk to the media.

I had a local rag reporter just today asked for my opinion on a local issue and I bluntly told I don't talk to the press ( a lesson from Vox I learned) and he was put off and couldn't or wouldn't understand why I refused to participate in his charade. I felt vindicated.

Blogger Factory August 04, 2017 5:03 PM

Agreed. Once heard a Canadian Senator grilled over a cherry picked misquote of mine by Anna Maria Tremonte (of the CBC). The media never once contacted me for clarification, and quoted each other 'quoting' me instead. That was 2014, so defend myself as naive at the time. But Vox is right. Even the 'friendly' media should be ignored.

Hah, every time I read another one of these posts about not talking to the media, I imagine that you are like the judge in My Cousin Vinny, who instructs the dull lawyer how to answer at the arraignment - telling him how he MUST NOT answer with anything other than "guilty" or "not guilty"

Then of course Vinny blows it, fails to do as instructed, reaps the sad consequences.

How can a conservative get the precious Smart Badge from the media if said conservative doesn't talk to the media, answer that smarties?

Anonymous Uncle John's Band August 04, 2017 5:14 PM

One thing that has always stayed with me from Paradise Lost is the way the Fall is contextualized in a larger framework of self-destructive pride. By choosing their own authority over God’s, Adam and Eve repeat Satan’s own decision to place solipsistic desire over the divine order, and turn from truth, or reality, to subjective fantasy. During the expulsion, Raphael foretells a future filled with dreary repetitions of that same error (Babel, Nimrod, etc.); the specific content varies, but the spiritually empty form is ever the same. This isn’t original, and Milton’s criticism was aimed primarily at Stuart crypto-Catholicism, but the force of this vision of pride going before the fall over and over throughout history is a powerful one.

Talking to the media generally places solipsistic desire over reality. I agree completely with this post, and would add that it is an alignment with reality that allows you to choose when to make an exception. Because you completely understand the media and their tricks, you have no illusions, and can recognize those odd occasions where the potential benefit exceeds the risk, or when a bait-and-switch is being attempted. For all the fantasies of hidden recordings and imaginary agreements, the secret king is just another Adam or Nimrod, pridefully imagining that they can bend reality to their dreams. Ultimately, they slam into the truth equally hard. Milton just highlights how depressingly common the impulse is really is.

Blogger Jan Minář August 04, 2017 5:17 PM

Learned that lesson first-hand at the tender age of 18. No-one can be so sheltered as not to know what a lying vindictive scum is in the employ of the media bosses. Yet the hacks are in the business precisely because they're good at being duplicitous and able to con both their readers and their subjects.

I'd first point fingers not at the credulous victims, but at the credulous nations who keep these orgs in business, or just allow their existence.

In my case, I just can't afford to not have a job yet. Financial independence is the hardest nut for most people to crack.

However, what could I possibly gain by talking to the media? What could they offer me that would make it remotely worth the hit job I know they would run. You just know they would start with "He's a regular poster on that Neo-Nazi blog run by Vox Day" and wind up with "He's a dumb hick from
West Virginia" (see http://twitchy.com/brettt-3136/2017/08/03/helpful-context-for-trumps-rally-from-a-pro-west-virginians-are-angry-easily-misled-lots-dont-speak-english/?utm_campaign=twitchywidget for current examples).

Sure, I might talk to Rush, Hannity, or Mark Steyn. But of the mainstream media the only one I'd trust is Salena Zito.

They're partially right about that...

Because they keep importing immigrants. For instance, Virginia has a huge MS-13 problem. What the f*ck Salvadorans are doing there is anyone's guess. You know, besides using kitchen knives in inappropriate ways.

Have you noticed they come up with the dumbest combinations imaginable? It's like Star Trek with Gene Roddenberry's idea of "infinite diversity in infinite combinations," but after eating lead paint on the Enterprise.

They take the sh*ttiest populations imaginable like Somalis and Central Americans...

Maybe we should put the Salvadorans where Spanish is already spoken? Oh, f*ck that. Try Virginia!

Let's take Somalis. Where do we put them? Some place warm? No. I know. I know... MINNESOTA!

Anonymous Reenay August 04, 2017 6:54 PM

Learned that lesson in college, and it wasn't even a political subject. They just cherry-picked my quotes and completely misrepresented what I said to the interviewee. Point being, Vox is right here. Don't talk to the media. Even for some seemingly benign thing, if they really want to write a story, they'll just come and observe what you're doing, then write about it.

Anonymous Johnny Mayonnaise August 04, 2017 6:57 PM

@12: Another illustration from My Cousin Vinny:

Sheriff: "At what point did you shoot the clerk?"
Billy: (confused) "I shot the clerk?"
Sheriff: "Yes. When did you shoot him?"
Billy: (still confused) "I shot the clerk?"

Later, at trial, the Sheriff testifies that Billy twice admitted to killing the clerk.

I've been misquoted, had swear words inserted into what I said, had the wrong website posted, been given the wrong name... the media, for the most part, are worthless. My own blog, YouTube channel, articles and books can speak for themselves. I have done some great interviews, though, recorded with podcasters. But that's on gardening. No one is editing in "carrots" when I said "beets."

Rush doesn't misrepresent himself. He wears his biases fairly openly. And I've never heard him do a hit piece on a scheduled interview. Have you?

> They're partially right about that... Because they keep importing immigrants

Not in WV. So far...

But I'd be willing to make a reasonable bet that the percentage of people who don't support themselves and/or don't speak English in WV is lower than it is in NYC.

Doesn't seem like a problem. I don't talk to fake news, so I won't explain to fake news either :P

"I had lunch with Rolling Stone a week ago. It was friendly, didn't have any significant gotchas, and probably will not be a generic hit piece. It won't run for a few months."

It was also about Castalia House's success rather than you yourself or your "political opinions".

What Vox just said is 100 percent. I am a lawyer, not always on a good guy side. Several times people have talked shit locally--'I hate you, I am going to get you, your family...'

But I am known as a decent gut for an attorney not always on the nice side. The family threat one, I told the homeboy dad to bring it (long and boring story), then called the asst pros I know and asked how dangerous dad was, and got him picked up on a parole violation. I actually called for cover when I shot him outside my house if he ever came out there, but yea.

I can't do that in the face of a media smearing, like Vox gets biweekly

I've experienced this in the past and again recently. It wasn't even a hostile outlet, but a young journalism student I know. I recommended someone to them to give a quote on a recent historical anniversary that has an influence on current events for a blog post. The person told the young journalist that their knowledge was limited but suggested a few ideas for them to pursue through their own research. The journalist never replied to the person to thank them, let alone mention they were going to publish anything, twisted one of the quotes into the opposite of what had been said (this wasn't malicious, but due to ignorance), and expressed surprise when I asked that he remove those quotes at the request of my friend, because he never agreed to their publication. Luckily he removed the quotes in the story which was of absolutely of zero benefit to my friend, but only could have caused harm if the right people had seen them. "No good deed goes unpunished."

Mike Cernovich (and Trump) are among the few people who have played this game effectively, but given the law of averages it's just a matter of time before it blows up in their faces. Media is integral to their profession though, for most of us we're just asking for massive trouble for almost no reward, just to get a minute of airtime or a quote in an article. I've come to believe that journalists are among the worst people you can interact with, when they aren't being intentionally deceptive, their stupidity and sloppiness in rushing to publish ASAP leads to mistakes that are always damaging to you.

Blogger Tatooine Sharpshooters' Club August 05, 2017 6:44 AM

You still have friends and family and acquaintances and co-workers who would be horrified to see you described publicly as a Nazi

This is the lever with which they can move a planet. Many acquaintances of mine are shocked enough to learn I voted for Trump and that I'm not a True Believer in the Proglodyte Dream. A seemingly innocuous letter to the editor can snap back at you pretty hard and I can barely imagine the nuclear level shunning I would receive if I was foolish enough to indulge a media hatchetperson's whimsy.

Blogger James Dixon August 05, 2017 9:40 AM

> I titally stopped listening to Rush (even though he is really entertaining and humorous) when he totally misrepresented Ron Paul's views on more than one occasion.

But was Ron a guest on his show at the time? There is a difference between his normal commentary and his guest appearances. I've never heard him be less than polite to a guest he has on the show, whether he agrees with their positions or not. If he doesn't agree he'll almost certainly give commentary at a later date, but if you've entered his radar space that will happen with or without the guest appearance.
