The crackdown cometh

Google is amping up and automating its YouTube crackdown:
Starting on Thursday, Google will police YouTube like it never has before, adding warnings and disabling advertising on videos that the company determines crosses its new threshold for offensive content.

YouTube isn’t removing the selected videos, but is instead setting new restrictions on viewing, sharing and making money on them. A note detailing the changes will go to producers of the affected videos on Thursday, according to a spokeswoman for the Alphabet Inc. company.

Google outlined these moves in June, but the implementation comes as debate about extremism and political speech is front-and-center in the national spotlight -- and when tech giants like Google and Facebook Inc. face deeper scrutiny over how they moderate information distributed through their digital services.

"These videos will have less engagement and be harder to find," Kent Walker, Google’s general counsel, wrote about the plans in a June blog post. "This strikes the right balance between free expression and access to information without promoting extremely offensive viewpoints." A Google spokeswoman declined to comment further on the changes.

The new restrictions, which target what Walker called "inflammatory religious or supremacist content," are expected to hit a small fraction of videos, according to person familiar with the company. YouTube says it uploads over 400 hours of video a minute. Videos tagged by its new policy won’t be able to run ads or have comments posted, and won’t appear in any recommended lists on the video site. A warning screen will also appear before the videos, which will not be able to play when embedded on external websites.
I've already seen reports that videos that even contain the word "SJW" in the video, not merely in the title or description, have been demonetized. So, it's not exactly hard to know which elements within Google are behind this.

So far, the saner elements are not prevailing.

This will, of course, have precisely zero effect on our plans for Voxiversity. We anticipated this and more.

Enjoyment of the decline: As the clock runs out on videos I want to watch, at least I'm finding that I it doesn't matter what I'm looking for - I can be looking for a carpentry video - I never see YouTube ads anymore. No wonder they are trying to push the subscription model - they done struck an artery.

Sometimes, you're just left speechless with what to say to such contradiction. "Strikes the right balance between free expression...without promoting extremely offensive viewpoints."

Ummm...that's the point, idiots. If you can't potentially offend anyone, that's NOT free expression. At all.

I heard they are also demonetizing prank videos if they cross the line. Many of these videos get millions of views but if the pranksters have no more incentive to go out and prank people, then those videos will stop being made. Viewership will decline. Google is killing YouTube and they either are too stupid to even know it or they simply don't care

Sounds like the right approach is two-pronged.

On the left prong, Spam new accounts and upload to them so hard it feels like a DDoS, so that they'll Nazi-down on potential new users, cutting their carotid. Preferably make it automated, since they are basically incapable of imitating that automation.

On the Right prong, Alt-tech.

If you can't embed them on other sites and they won't show up through YouTube's recommendation system, it's worse than useless. It means you would have to send your viewers there to watch it, which profits YouTube while annoying your viewers and possibly driving them away.

The only reason to still use YouTube was their recommendation system which gave you access to their large pool of viewers, and possible monetization. Without those two things, you might as well be anywhere else.

A keyword search using audio stream is not exactly the most sophisticated AI possible. It could even be a fat SJW in a cube farm skimming video. This is not the robot apocalypse. It doesn't even have to involve AI at all, now that I think on it.

The Romanian Communists kept track of every phone call made in the country by simply assigning enough low level Party members to listen to phone calls in every town's switchboard. Since there weren't that many phones it was feasible. I'm sure there are plenty of SJW's around the world who have volunteered to be content commissars for Goolag at no charge.

"The crackdown cometh"

"Cometh?" How's Murdoch Murdoch doing these days? YouTube put the ADL in charge of censorship more than 3 weeks ago. It's already here.

Not to mentioning the broader attack on all real alt right sites, of course-- a combination of demonetization, "hacker" attacks (Red Ice in particular), deplatforming, and outright unpersoning.

"Videos tagged by its new policy won’t be able to run ads or have comments posted, and won’t appear in any recommended lists on the video site. A warning screen will also appear before the videos, which will not be able to play when embedded on external websites."

(((They))) always focus on demonetization/ boycotts/ firing/ etc., but note also that they want to impede communication among those engaged in wrongthink. The warning/ disabling embedding plan also suggests that they may require Google login for videos posted by political dissidents. Just to verify age, of course.

There will be a lot of uncertainty until the dust settles, as well as low-level SJWs taking actions that their bosses may retract later -- or not. This reminds me exactly of old time newspapers, where people write "letters to the editor" or op-ed pieces and the newspaper decides what to print. Youtube is harvesting user content and deciding what to "print" (i.e. monetize) based on their editorial policy rather than the free market. Obviously the non-monetized videos still take up storage space, so it's not like a "page space" limitation. So it looks like it's more important to expound their editorial policy rather than make money.

Of course, the crackdown will not work, partly because they never work. By working, the crackdown would completely shut down anything with the scent of opposition to the SJW Leftist Liberal agenda. They will fail to do that, even if they abolished all comedy, there will still be those pesky microaggressions, which can be seen in everything by the paranoid moderators. This has gone well beyond banning mere words, now they claim the right to ban ideas as well and it is a half step from banning groups of people....not just individuals.

The crackdown will fail because crackdowns always fail. They vainly hope they control what people think and they can tailor what people think by not allowing those who disagree to speak in public. If they can ban disagreement, then they imagine that everyone will only agree. Gosh...harmony is so easy to accomplish, just ban every though except those that contribute to harmony. Poof...instant harmony.

Back when I was a kid, radio and television was strongly filtered for hard language, for perverse thoughts, for explicit realism, for the weird, for taboo. I do not believe that the censors ever thought they were banning such things from the reality of human existence or that these filters would work to keep those things from happening or that such thoughts would simply die out with the next generation.

The year I graduated high school, the Federal government banned a number of words from music lyrics, claiming that these were drug key words that fed into the illicit drug trade. One of the words was "horse" because it was rumored that "horse" was one of the street names for heroin. Therefore, we could not have music broadcast over the radio (or tv) that was about "horse" or "horses". Yes, it was incredibly stupid and there was a flood of music in defiance and in the end authority retreated...just as it will this time.

Republicans believe if you can make money doing something, it cannot be wrong. There are no wrong ways to make money. If they are particularly religious Republicans, their only limitation on making money is anything explicitly condemned in the Bible as sin. Monopoly power is not a sin.

Democrats believe that making money should be limited to those who agree with their policies, so they boycott businesses that do not share their viewpoints. We saw this in a glaring way during the General Motors bailout, when over 1,700 GM dealers across the country were cut off from the factory for having made donations to Republican candidates. That was perfectly reasonable to the Democrats and entirely consistent with Obama and the Chicago Way. The Democrats would have no problem with monopoly power as long as it was a monopoly that gives money to Democrat candidates and publicly supports Democrat policies.

YouTube is a money sink and even before the recent social hysteria , ad revenue was in steep decline . It is all over the web. Some of this "crackdown" is SJW posturing but a lot of it is cargo cult thinking, if we make it safe John Frumm will bring ad revenue

Also the algorithms they used to sort ads being constructed by H1B types mainly are poor and were unable to sort ads by content and were cutting off very harmless apolitical with high viewership videos as well.

Ad hucksters are claiming that advertisers are returning to TV but I doubt it and nor would I trust anyone in a business where stretching the truth is standard practice

My guess is that between convergence costs and wage arbitrage the US economy is shriveling bit by bit along with a lot of things like advertising. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle dies. Guess who buys the most ? Yep. The middle

Blogger DonReynolds August 25, 2017 6:10 PM

These days, I keep hearing people say..."How did we get here?"
The first thing I think of is Admiral Zumwalt, Chief of Naval Operations. The NYTimes says he is the person who "modernized the Navy". He was the youngest CNO in Navy history and assumed command in July 1970. He instituted a number of "reforms" to make Navy life more attractive to young men. One of those was to allow sailors to have sideburns to the "middle of their ear".

After Admiral Zumwalt issued that decree, a young sailor was called before the captain for having long sideburns, which were at the middle of his ear.
The young sailor protested to the captain..."Admiral Zumwalt says we can have sideburns to the middle of the ear."
This annoyed the captain a great deal. He rose to his feet to confront the young sailor, pointed to the top of his own ear and said...."THIS is the middle of the ear!"

Yes, I know...but it was a useful lesson
for those willing to learn it: It does not really matter what the rules say.

Years later, I found myself between two choices and either way I decided, I would be fired from my job. If I did my job correctly, I would be fired by the politically correct office pinkies. If I did not do my job, I could be fired for not doing my job. So I went to the boss and laid it out in a very simple way and asked my boss what I should do.
He said not to worry....
"If they want to fire you, they will, whether you screw up or not. If they don't want to fire you, they won't, no matter how much you screw up."
"So what should I do?"
"Do what they pay you to do. If you get fired you can get another job, but you don't want to say later that you got fired for not doing your work."

It's not that they don't care, it's that the SJW infiltrators would rather have Youtube burned to the ground than be used by the Right.

With SJWs, Leftist power is all that matters. That's why they are a cancer to any institution.

You're talking about FCC Notice 71-205, which came out in 1971. It wasn't a "regulation", per se. Rather FCC notified radio stations that they were required to review the lyrics of every song they played (itself ridiculous, if you've ever worked in a radio station) for drug references and implied very heavily that playing any songs that glorified drug use could violate the "Public Interest" responsibilities of an FCC licensed radio station.

FCC is and was restrained explicitly by their founding law from censoring station content. Notice 71-205 was an end run around the law, to get stations to censor themselves. And it worked. It worked to the point that station managers outright banned any records they had not personally vetted. It worked to the point that explicitly anti-drug songs, like The Pusher by Steppenwolf and Acid Queen by The Who were banned at many radio stations.

A great many people, including one of the FCC commissioners, said that he rule was a blatant attempt by the Nixon administration to tamp down on anti-war protests. The courts steadfastly refused to address the issue, denying standing to everybody who filed suit.

Eventually (and two hours of digging through the internet hasn't revealed when) the FCC moved the penalty from "lose your license" to "pay a fine, like for obscenity".

So, the rule is still in place, just temporarily unenforced.

Does that make you feel safer? Me neither.

Well I knew the Pot TV people at one time and they used Peer 1 IIRC. (Of course they all lie like a rug so who knows, maybe it was bartered for cheese pizza.)

Say, is drug use and sex verboten on YouTube too? Will our Heroes™ be policing those Elsa and Spider-Man videos too? A serious question, unfortunately.

Notice that Youtube can vet content for forbidden thoughts, but not for copyrighted content. The claim before was that they made good faith efforts to reduce copyright violation, but it was basically impossible to catch. Does this open them up to lawsuits from Viacom and GE?

The echo chamber is about to get a lot more echo rattling around.

If I ask google to show a video of a wedding between a Christian man and woman, will they decline to post it?

Modern Liberalism
needs to be stopped before they get mind reading technology.
Because then they will be throwing people in jail for thought crimes.
(in some countries they already do).

Puritanism in panties. Fixed it for you.

It appears that SJWs do indeed double-down.

So if I do an "art project" like a hard core autist:
(1) Create 20 or so gmail accounts (x2ev98sx@gmail.com etc.)
(2) Create 50 or so "art videos" (7 minutes of camera looking at a wall titled "wall", 19 minutes of camera looking at a can of soup on a table titled "soup can on the table", 14 minutes of camera looking at old shoes on the floor titled "old shoes on the floor", etc.) Note - I bet the video generation could be farmed out to a community college art student.
(3) Create channel with one email account and upload all 50 videos
(4) Repeat #3 above 19 more times

Of course this description is for a manual process...what I don't know is how to create scripts that would create gmail accounts and youtube accounts, and upload videos to the youtube accounts. If it could be scripted, why then hundreds of channels could be created per day, and thousands of videos could be uploaded per day. The process could be considered "performance art".

Because that would be an interesting art project. I wonder what that would cost youtube in storage costs, in database costs tracking videos and accounts, in SJW labor...
