Announcing VOXIVERSITY

To support Voxiversity, please visit the Voxiversity project at the new crowdfunding site, Freestartr, which combines the functionality of Kickstarter, Patreon, and Indiegogo, but without the SJW thought-policing. There are six levels of support, each of which comes with different rewards.
  • Subscriber
  • Supporter
  • Advocate
  • Champion
  • Brainstorm
  • Foundation
Voxiversity is a series of educational video lectures by bestselling political philosopher Vox Day.

Castalia House reaches tens of thousands of people through the medium of books. The ideas first presented in books such as SJWs Always Lie, 4th Generation Warfare Handbook, and The Irrational Atheist have penetrated even those institutions most converged by social justice, such as academia and the media.. But Castalia’s reach is limited to an audience of people who enjoy reading books.

Video offers the ability to reach millions of people in a very short period of time. But the distribution of video is entirely different than book-selling, as most people who watch videos expect to do so for free. Video production is also more expensive, and the combination of those two factors is why it is necessary to crowdfund the production of videos containing the same kind of viral information that one so often encounters in Castalia’s non-fiction books.

The videos will be 20-minutes long, and subjects that require more detailed analysis will be addressed by multi-video series. The videos will also be released as podcasts for those who prefer audio to video.

Voxiversity will change the way people think.

UPDATE: Thanks very much for the staunch support. Our objective is to exceed expectations. In the meantime, I think this was the most amusing reaction.

I suspect that your success will be proportional to your ability to restrain yourself from telling people how much more intelligent you are then them when you fail to explain something clearly. Having said that...I wish you the best of luck :)

Subscribed! One tiny thing people might run into though--for the user name, it's only alphanumeric characters. You can't use dashes or spaces or special characters, but the error message won't really tell you that.

In any case, can't wait for the knowledge-bombs.

Need some acoustic padding in the room for the mic. You're getting that wall-based flat echo effect.

This is related, but I see everyone make this mistake a lot. So it's worth pointing out: With online Video, the Audio is more important.

A lot don't get that clarity in the audio is how people think about a video first. People watch videos from 240p to 4K now, but if the audio is "off", it ruins the experience. But it's also hard to do with equipment because our ears are used to isolating position rather than quality in audio. When you limit position (by fixed speakers), you notice the quality issues.

A random point, but if anyone is thinking about doing Video stuff, keep that in mind.

Anonymous Looking Glass September 12, 2017 4:29 PM

@S1AL

Funny bit is the "Hello, Fellow Christians" stuff is the most blatantly obvious, as they clearly know nothing about the faith. They clearly can't fake that part, which might make it more hilarious.

Anonymous VFM #7916 September 12, 2017 4:32 PM

The ability to troll does not translate into any other skill well.

If all you've got is rhetoric it's not much of a plan for the future.

Another reason why the #fakeright is not on our side.

Being able to put forward a logical and positive philosophy is superior in all measurement time periods, especially opposed to certain ideologies that have to lie, misdirect, hide, or otherwise conceal what they're really after.

#fakeright can't learn.

I don't care about the Periscopes. They were mostly just to see if I could do video anyhow. I don't expect to do them as often now that we've launched Voxiversity.

And if you watched the video, you can see that I have a real camera and a real mic. I just don't use them for Periscope.

I laughed when a Christian guest on an Alt-White podcast talked smack about Vox Day, on the grounds that "what has he ever done to support Christianity?" Guy couldn't even Google a bibliography.

I'll laugh even harder when Vox does a video on, say, Aquinas' perspective on immigration, and how the Cuckchurchian perspective is anti-Christian.

Blogger Orville September 12, 2017 4:52 PM

And if you watched the video, you can see that I have a real camera and a real mic. Video is definitely better as I could read many of the titles on your bookshelf. Looking Glass brings up a good point about audio though.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 12, 2017 4:56 PM

With online Video, the Audio is more important.

I didn't understand most of what you said there, probably because I know nothing about either. Rather than divert this thread, would you have a link to a good intro on the topic? Most of what I've seen about video/podcasting either says to use whatever you have on hand, or to buy a good mic, but not much beyond that.

Blogger SmockMan September 12, 2017 5:01 PM

I backed it. Looks good. There were issues with the audio. I had to lower my volume for the intro music, then increase it way up to hear you speaking at the end.

Blogger S1AL September 12, 2017 5:01 PM

@Cail

Would you rather watch a slightly disjointed video with good audio, or good video with sightly disjointed audio?

The former is mildly annoying, the latter gives you a headache.

Blogger Dave September 12, 2017 5:07 PM

I expect good video and good audio. End of discussion.

Blogger Salt September 12, 2017 5:14 PM

VD wrote:We were mostly concerned with the audio.

I'm guessing that your office/library has a high ceiling. The room is a little over-reflective in the acoustic. Gives it a tinny edge.

Anonymous Looking Glass September 12, 2017 5:17 PM

@Cail:

I've not seen too many good guides, as I haven't had much reason to work in the space lately, but it is a pretty straight forward issue. Audio can be repurposed to other ends, while Video is just video, while at the same time it's actually what people are responding to. If you don't believe me, try watching a video with bad voice acting that's subtitled. You'll be so horribly distracted by the audio that you'll either start laughing a lot or turn if off.

Though, with audio, there's always an issue of "good enough". Vox has studio experience, so he knows how stupidly difficult getting good audio can be, but for most purposes a decent external microphone and some sort of noise filtering on your walls will cover the details. Most will be fine sticking to USB-based connection types.

The problem becomes when you start using "pro" equipment, then the costs skyrocket. As you need really good converters and connectors, which makes aligning the audio & video occasionally problematic. If audio & video are desynced by about .1 to .2 seconds, you'll get a migraine after a few minutes. So, there are hurdles.

I used to be a strictly reading person, but in the last few years, I've grown to prefer videos. Many of my friends, family, and colleagues are the same way. I dunno what it is -- the Jordan Peterson effect? Or maybe the oral tradition is just a more natural way for us to learn, and now tech has facilitated its return.

What's encouraging for those who want to branch out into making videos is how knowledge, sincerity, and passion trump just about everything else in a presentation. Peterson isn't particularly suave, and doesn't have a radio-quality voice, but he's an undeniable YouTube phenomenon. It's confirmation of what a successful public speaker once told me. The formula for success is: know what you're saying, believe what you're saying, love what you're saying.

Anyway, I'm very much looking forward to Voxiversity, and believe you have a great shot at success with this. If I can help out in any other way, let me know.

He comes across as authentic, and his content is exceedingly helpful to a lot of people. The fact that he sounds like Kermit and shoots himself from below on his laptop half the time (lighting him like Frankenstein's monster) is of no concern to his viewers, among whom I number myself.

Yeah, Vox should do well.

Fortunately, Stefan Molyneux usually explains what's ON the charts and graphs, so I squeeze by with audio even then.

However, from the trailer, I may make an exception for Voxiversity, as it is impossible to convey a good Warhammer 40K meme through audio.

Blogger Deeed x September 12, 2017 7:38 PM

Looking Glass,

Thanks. Like Vox and others, I'm becoming convinced that audio and video are increasingly a necessity. I convert things I download to audio whenever watching isn't required, and I don't suppose too many people do that, but a lot of people probably play the video and just listen. I should probably get a mic that doesn't pop so much, for starters.

Anonymous Eduardo September 12, 2017 8:21 PM

Usually people like to see things if it has a visual content associated with it. When it comes to ideas, is more a question of making it easier to create a mental image, just like those 50's educational videos.

Blogger Forge the Sky September 12, 2017 9:22 PM

I've done semi-pro video production for Youtube for over a decade.

Very solid pre-rendered portions of the video; money well spent. The video of you in the study looks good but sounds poor. Part of this is, as people have noted, just due to your voice. But that is quite workable. It just takes good use of equipment and environment. Making a low-echo studio is important. You can also greatly improve that as well as other issues by having a more directional mic closer to your mouth/throat - either with a lapel mic or by biting the bullet and having your face partially obscured by a larger mic and pop shield. Also, try dropping a few of the mids one by one on your equalizer, see what sounds best. It's a bandaid but you can often get rid of some of the 'boomy' sounds that way.

If you go for sound dampeners, they don't need to be terribly expensive. Lots of diminishing returns in that market.

Audio is important, as this is how you convey your actual information in this medium.

Blogger Raben Wulf September 12, 2017 9:25 PM

Friendly recommendation.

-Lavalier Microphones are worth the investment (clip on, surprisingly affordable). For a great sounding option that wont require much, check out the Purple Panda Lavalier Lapel Microphone Kit on Amazon ($20)

-Softbox studio lighting kits. The kind of difference they make is huge! Both combined can be found for less than $100 and it will drastically up the quality or perception of quality of these videos.

There are some low to mid range canon camera's that can really offer some nice video capture as well... and with the lens you can usually get a good depth of field effect. Your content is good, so I would love to see more people get drawn into watching it.

Blogger maniacprovost September 12, 2017 9:46 PM

I wonder what Vox will do in 20 minutes. There should be a Darkstream drinking game. When Vox talks about IQ take a drink. When he bans someone take a drink. When his point strikes home like the answer to a riddle you should have known but just didn't chug a lug.

Darkstream with more focus and depth I can send as links is my wish. Well, actually, I wonder how my friends would react, probably pass it off as one of my annoying caveman quirks. Hey, I'm doing better, used to be a dinosaur, moving up is moving up.

Humans are suckers for metrics. Show me the man who criticizes Vox's reference to IQ who doesn't regularly trot out numbers about his favorite sports teams and athletes, authors, movie makers, guns, his own age or height or bank account, or the age of the whisky and number of libations it took for him to get a hangover from this hypothetical drinking game. And if there's one thing that Boomers have taught us it's that merely thinking for a long periods of time =/= wisdom or intelligence.

Blogger wreckage September 13, 2017 3:19 AM

SThermite, thinking for long periods of time works well if you're systematic and you're building a framework, so that you're not working back over the same ground over and over. You only need decent IQ and workmanship to follow most things at a level that will put you well above average in terms of working comprehension.

Also, I think the IQ jibes were for yucks.
