Dynamique is unimpressed

Thanks to all of the 445 backers and counting. In the meantime, Disney bans smoking in all Marvel films, and presumably, comics.
Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist Tony Stark has got some pretty bad habits, like drinking too much, sleeping around, and accidentally inventing genocidal artificial intelligence. But one thing he's never going to do is light up a cigarette, says Disney; they will “absolutely prohibit” the depiction of smoking in all Disney films with a PG-13 rating or under, including those made by Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm.

Chairman and CEO Bob Iger reiterated Disney's current policy at a shareholder meeting yesterday (March 12), noting that the only exception is when films depict real-life historical figures who were known for their tobacco habit. “For instance, we’ve been doing a movie on Abraham Lincoln, he was a smoker, and we would consider that acceptable,” he said.

This isn't the first time the Avengers have shied away from cigarettes, of course. When Joe Quesada first stepped up as Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics in 2001, he implemented a similar ban for all the main Marvel characters -- having lost a grandfather to lung cancer, he believed that depicting smoking in comics encouraged the behavior. Issues in the Marvel back catalog remained unchanged, but recently new trade collections have had their cover art altered to reflect the company's anti-smoking policy.
Dynamique is unimpressed. She finds fascist anti-smokers to be unendurably ennui-inspiring. The only thing she hates more are flats. Stand with her and support Alt★Hero.

As promised, we've added a second page to Dynamique's story. Check it out on the campaign page. Check back every day for new pages, character sketches, and quite possibly, new rewards and stretch goals.

According to http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/910-agriculture:

But while De Lyon cherished great expectations in that direction, the Jews of Georgia in general found the production of indigo, rice, corn, tobacco, and cotton more profitable (ibid. p. 12). In fact, the cotton-plantations in many parts of the South were wholly in the hands of the Jews, and as a consequence slavery found its advocates among them.

So, it seems that once they have milked an economic area they don't want others to be able to use it?

So Vox... When will the Alt-Hero movies come out? I mean not like you have to rush or anything! I mean it is not like the comic book companies will eventually check out leaving a certain Finnish publisher to rule the Land.

But in all honesty... I am not in favor or cigarettes all that much. Going through the smoke tunnel in the "admission test prep school" was pretty annoying, only one bloody entrance and we had to go through them, despite the fact there was more then enough street for then to smoke at, nope, it had to be at the doors, right on the porch getting in your way, and making sure that there a fine mist in the entrance. I get the idea that you do what you want, but isn't smoking intentionally near other people, a cohersive action? I mean is like when I played video late at night a pissed the neighbours! Hey I was in the Wrong there!

At least the pool bar was fun! (Oh the pool bar... Have to back there.) The cigar smell sticked to the clothes pretty badly though, but playing pool was awesome.

@7 "only one bloody entrance and we had to go through them, despite the fact there was more then enough street for then to smoke at, nope, it had to be at the doors, right on the porch getting in your way,"

Back decades ago when I worked for Boeing in Washington (state), I was delighted to find that they actually forced the smokers to LEAVE the door area... They did NOT want their (non-smoking) folks to have to walk that gauntlet, so the smokers had to go a couple hundred feet away. (And it rains a LOT in WA state! )

"Frikkin scolds. Next they'll be after alcohol, caffeine, and finally meat. It's always the same with these people."

See, you may THINK you're joking.
From Yahoo! Style (Canada):
Eating meat makes you a snob (and racist)
“We came to the conclusion that, just as in the case of vegetarianism and veganism, there is an underlying set of beliefs underpinning the eating of meat,” said study author Dr. Tamara Pfeiler.

[...]

The study looked at carnistic defence eaters (meat eaters who legitimatize the practice of eating animals) and carnistic domination eaters (meat eaters who support the killing of animals for their meat). Researchers found a correlation between people who believe in their right to eat meat and an attitude that approves of dominance within social structures.

Researchers also found that both carnistic defence eaters and carnistic domination eaters had attitudes that approved of right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation, “but only carnistic domination was related to symbolic racism and sexism.”

The three things they don't want us to do that I am in agreement with are getting grossly obese, wreckless driving, and smoking. The only downside is that they tend to be pushy and often sell the cause using lies.

If Disney wants to discourage smoking they should forbit it for the hero unless it is somehow part of the brand, as, say, with Shirlock Homes. (He used some narcotic in the original verson.) But really there is no reason for not having a vilain or bit character puff away. That does not sell the habit.

Now if you want your heroine to flip the bird to the anti smoking Nazis now and then it is fine with me, but I surely hope you don't have her puffing away as a regular habit.

Otoh, it's no more stupid or filthy than a whole list of habits these same people not only tolerate but celebrate.

@2 Crew:

So, it seems that once they have milked an economic area they don't want others to be able to use it?

Sure, they're peddling other drugs these days. From the same paragraph you quoted in the Jewish Encyclopedia:

On the virgin soil of America the Jews were among the pioneers of Agriculture. While Louis de Torres introduced tobacco into use for civilized mankind, Jews transplanted the sugar-cane from Madeira to Brazil in 1548…. During the seventeenth century the sugar industry was monopolized by the Jews, and with their expulsion from Brazil it was transplanted to the West Indies, where, in 1663, David de Mercato's invention of new sugar-mills benefited the sugar-trade in Barbados.

Just as an aside here, caffeine helps a little with diet also because it is a stimulant. Plus it will not give you lung cancer. Even better is Garcinia Cambogia, provided you follow directions and take a big enough dose. In trials they used 1.5 to 5 grams daily. (or 1,500 mg to 5,000)

The man is the king of short term gain long term loss. It is just that the losses haven't piled up yet.

No matter how successful Marvel or Star Wars are, the brands are distinct from Disney's. I am quite certain that Marvel films will continue to rake it in for at least the next ten years but I have a feeling Star Wars is going to start losing money hand over fist in the next five.

I must politely disagree with you.

In 1977 a chopped off, bleeding arm was almost never seen outside of an R rated movie. In addition, Vader broke a guy's neck in first five minutes. And Han famously and obviously SHOT FIRST DAMN IT!!!

ahem

My point is that Star Wars wasn't kid's stuff in the late 70's and early 80s.

It really wasn't. I was a kid back then and there was a lot of discussions in our house about whether it was at all appropriate for me to see this new movie. You probably have guessed where I stood on the subject.

The reason Star Wars and for that matter Indiana Jones are viewed as kid's garbage today is that Lucas turned both of them into kid's movies in the later sequels. He was an old guy who was worried about what his kids would think.

But back then, no, no the weren't. In their day it was pretty gritty and daring stuff.

Theoretically, the cigarette machines were only in bars, which were theoretically off limits to kids.
Not that it ever actually worked out that way. A bar wouldn't card unless you actually ordered a drink. If you wanted to drink coke, and you didn't look like a kid, no-one cared. Hell, up until the Clinton administration, the drinking age was 19 in a lot of places, like Idaho and 18 in New Jersey. Stop for a beer on the way home from school? Who cares? It's your old man's problem, not mine.
The cigarette machines were in the vestibule or just inside the door, or, at the local bowling alley, just outside the door of the lounge. Better sales that way.

And no-one cared.

Imagine a world in which no-one cares.

Blogger Robert Pinkerton September 29, 2017 3:43 PM

Most of us start with cigarettes; but as soon as I caught the knack of the pipe, I gave cigarettes over for good-and-all. I consider cigarettes an abuse of, and an abuse against, good tobacco. For the last fifty-six years to date, I had rather not smoke at all than smoke cigarettes. Too, goo pipe tobacco is free from artificial aromatic ingredients, artificial flavoring, combustion accelerants, or moisture preservatives.

That we're hitting the $40K mark within 24 hours bodes well for hitting $100K in 30 days. The lowest reward tier $15 for 6x comic issues is a steal.

I detest and despise smoking in confined single ventilated spaces, and I think smokers were idiots. As an athlete back in the distant day, I only had to try it once to realize it was inimical to performance.

But what was done to the smokers was wrong. They yielded a little, at first reasonably, and then to increasingly unreasonable and irrational demands. And by the time they realized that there was a near total ban in the offing (see LA -- can't smoke indoors if children, can't smoke outdoors because fire. Can't smoke in your car because children, etc.) it was far too late.

The same thing is true with MADD -- it's neo-prohibition.

The NRA sees this and fights restrictions tooth and nail. Good for them. Giving an inch really does yield a mile.

We should have cultural sympathy with smokers, even though we despise the habit.

Not a surpise: https://infogalactic.com/info/Motion_Picture_Association_of_America_film_rating_system#Substance_abuse
In May 2007, the MPAA announced that depictions of cigarette smoking would be considered in a film's rating.[32][33] The 2011 Nickelodeon-animated film Rango caused some controversy over its PG rating among anti-smoking advocates. It was argued that the film showed over 60 depictions of characters smoking in the film, and that because of this, the child-friendly PG rating was inappropriate.[34]
It's now believed that scenes that are not for historical purposes (for example, a film depicting Walt Disney himself, he was a heavy smoker) will bump a film's rating up one notch (PG to PG-13 for example).
The company overall has cracked down on smoking, prior to the mid-90's, smoking was allowed in Disney hotels (with 'smoke free' rooms available on request) and anywhere outdoors in the parks. Cigarettes could be bought in many places (Main Street USA used to have a Tobacconist). Now all hotels are completely smoke free with people who are caught smoking kicked out and charged a stiff ''cleaning fee''. In the parks there are now ''smoking corrals'' and patrons caught smoking outside them may get kicked out. And of course, the Tobacconists in Disney World and land have been converted to gift shops and tobacco cannot be bought anywhere on the property.

Great to see how successful it's being. Pledged at the hardcover level. At this rate you'll want to add more stretch goals because you're going to meet them all. 30-50% of a crowdfunding take is usually done in the first 48 hours. Ideally you want to have one stretch goal still unfilled on the home stretch to inspire more pledges.

Stretch goals for having the Hardbacks signed and another for the Paperbacks signed would be cool. You could also have stretch goals for narrated vidoes of the other volumes. Best of luck!

Out of curiosity ...

454 backers raised $43K. Taking out the 4 who bought the top tier, it's 450 for $28K, average $60 per backer. Ratio of ebook ($15/$50 tiers) to everything else is about 1:2, so 2/3rds physical.

Say it's a $125K stretch goal, and whale tiers sell out. Need to raise $87.5K from everyone else, about 1400 backers. Say 1000 paperback/hardcover.

10 sec to sign each book, 10K seconds is 170 minutes of signing to service that number of backers.

@64 Neither does vaping, as far as we can tell. And it's enough like smoking to keep the old habits that are so difficult to break.

The American CDC is lying through its ... smoking hole ... about vaping! They're afraid that, rather than helping people get off WAY more dangerous ciggies, vaping will encourage people to start smoking ciggies! So, despite the research and fact-and-figures, they're LYING and helping push to outlaw or control it as much as ciggies. (WON'T stop pushing tobacco cause the govt makes a MINT off growing and selling!)

"Or think about the crusade the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is conducting against electronic cigarettes (e-cigs). The weight of the evidence, I believe, supports the view that vaping e-cigs is much, much safer than smoking real cigarettes. CDC periodically publishes research on smoking and vaping. Some of that research arguably contradicts CDC's anti-vaping policy stance.

As far as I know the research is honest, but there are times when CDC is less than honest in how it interprets the research for the general public. One of those times is detailed in my 2015 column, "A Promising Candidate for Most Dangerously Dishonest Public Health News Release of the Year."

...CDC publishes unbiased e-cig research, then spins the results to support its anti-vaping bias. I believe CDC's opposition to electronic cigarettes is killing people. But CDC presumably believes it is saving lives. ...

Vaping actually doesn't bother me even slightly on the other hand. I'd be rather inclined to say that I like it, since all of the ones I've noticed actually smelled nice (and working in a shipyard, that's like having a mobile air-freshener around). I don't think it qualifies as gross or rude at all.

As for the health aspect of it, what I gather is that no one has actually found much of anything detrimental about it so far, if they had, guarantee you'd be hearing it from the rooftops. I think probably the only thing even moderately concerning about it is the people who do absurd custom rigs and abuse is, but they'd almost certainly be abusing something else if not this, so... whatever.

As far as it luring people into smoking? Probably the opposite. That'd be like saying that ambrosia lures people onto normal food (assuming, of course, that people didn't have to eat in the first place for the sake of analogy). People who started with vaping are probably people who were considering smoking already, and now that they've vaped they'd probably find smoking comparatively unpleasant.

Ironically, this would mean that kaboshing vapes would probably make many times more new tobacco smokers than just letting them carry on.

The volumes are each a single issue of a comic book.

Not to be confused with the paperback anthology which will have the first 3 issues of Alt Hero initially offered.

The $40K stretch goal unlocked the 4th issue, so all the $15+ backers get a bonus reward (ebook). The next stretch goals unlock the 5th and 6th issues.

The stretch goal after that unlocks the option of a second anthology containing issues 4-6.

Of course. They can't possibly have a safe smoking alternative. There goes 10% of their budget.

Allow me to quote a Wall Street Journal article archived at http://archive.is/2awR9:

Researchers reviewing the literature in 2009 concluded that smokeless tobacco was 99% safer than smoking. “Treating all nicotine products as equally dangerous is not just factually incorrect,” says Dr. Rodu, now at the University of Louisville. “It’s dangerously unethical, whether it’s applied to smokeless tobacco or e-cigarettes.”

and

In Britain, public-health authorities have encouraged smokers to switch to safer alternatives. E-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine as a vapor, are about 95% less harmful than smoking, according to a 2015 review by England’s health agency. The Royal College of Physicians, Britain’s pre-eminent medical authority, has warned that it would be “irrational and immoral” to discourage smokers from switching.

Oh, but Disney does distribute movies with smoking in them. Studio Ghibli movies have smoking in them. "The Wind Rises", the last film by Miyazaki--who smokes--has almost non-stop smoking.

Since Ghibli has a strict no-cuts policy for it foreign distributors, Disney had to tack on a tacky little anti-smoking vignette at the beginning of the movie.

Said vignette features a voice that is obviously 1) white, 2) male and 3) rural/southern.

So don't any of you dumb white hicks get any ideas in your head that smoking is OK.

I believe it is well established that cigarettes are the most dangerous way of getting a nicotine fix because they are the most mild and therefore the most likely to be inhaled. Cigars and pipes are generally safer, and guessing, e-cigarettes the safest of the inhaled products.

While I was stationed on Okinawa.

You could also get beer out of vending machines and I'm not joking.

Of course he's not. The range of stuff you can get from Japanese vending machines is legendary:
