The dark side of entrepreneurial genius

Many will rightly look at this as a wonderful example of the sort of energetic immigrant entrepreneurialism that they believe to be of great benefit to America. But, as it happens, there is a very real and substantive downside to it as well:
The Uberpreneur: How An Uber Driver Makes $252,000 A Year. Uber may not just be a disruptive platform for transportation, but one for small businesses.

“Absolutely,” Uber spokeswoman Kristin Carvell says. “One of the greatest things about the Uber platform is that it offers economic opportunity for a variety of drivers — full-time, part-time, veterans, teachers, artists, and students — in more than 260 cities around the world.  Supporting and fueling the local economy is important to Uber and our driver partners help us to achieve this goal.”

His passengers seem to agree. Gavin’s ratings are 4.85/5.00 on Uber Black, 4.87/5.00 on UberX and 4.95/5.00 on Lyft, which he also uses. Those ratings have held up over time; Gavin drove over 3,829 passengers in the past 18 months.

These passengers include “executives who people pay thousands of dollars to meet at networking events,” Gavin says. He’s met Vogue fashion editors and Silicon Valley’s top brass, including legendary investor Shervin Pishevar.

“I’ve had a lot of amazing drivers, but Gavin is one of the best,” Shervin told me. “I was in his car with my daughter when I saw his jewelry designs. I thought they were wonderful and gave him a lot of encouragement to pursue his dreams.”

It's these tactics that translate to sales. In the past year, Gavin designed many jewelry pieces for passengers, averaging $18,000 in transactions per month. Adding the $3,000 monthly gross earnings from Uber, he made $252,000 last year. Gavin used the income to expand his business, buying three more cars and hiring six new drivers.
It's an absolutely brilliant idea. This guy is advertising far more effectively than any social media or Madison Avenue campaign, taking advantage of the direct one-on-one time he has with his riders to let them know about his business, which quite clearly is a genuine interest to a sufficient percentage of them. This guy is a bona fide entrepreneurial genius.

However, it's not all rosy good cheer and future GDP growth on the horizon.
But Gavin’s growing business doesn’t tell the full story. As he’s become more successful, he hasn’t forgotten about his fellow Filipino immigrants. “I reach back to my roots,” he said. “When hiring new drivers, I find underemployed Filipinos and give them the jobs first. Most don’t know much about smartphones — and that’s okay. I teach them about Uber and Lyft. I teach them how to use the internet so it can help their lives in other ways, too. I let them use the cars to run errands and pick up their children. It’s not about squeezing every dollar from them. It’s about empowering the community that you came from.”
So much for American meritocracy. Gavin is so grateful for the opportunity that America has given him that he's actively helping his fellow Filipinos in preference to Americans, even when they are massively less-qualified.

This is precisely why the civic nationalist notion of only bringing in the best and most productive foreigners is as harmful to the nation, and arguably more insidiously so, than importing a parasitical class of welfare recipients.

Reasons like this are why it was impossible for me, and most other young men I knew, to find work as a teenager in my hometown. I had to join the military, and many just sold drugs until they got into university.

Blogger AdognamedOp September 29, 2017 6:33 AM

Fk the "underemployed" flips and this Uber sht. There are numerous, established car service companies that employ just about anyone with a valid drivers license. My former drummer drove a cab just to supply the weed for our jam sessions at one time.

There's also the issue that the Western Empires have been pillaging the best & brightest from their home countries, who tend to bring in family from their home country. So you end up with a colony of foreigners along with removing the extremely capable from their home country.

It's actually bad for *both* countries, but it serves some party's bottom line and/or prestige.

Let's imagine how this story would be cast if we changed just one detail:

'As he’s become more successful, he hasn’t forgotten about his fellow white Americans. “I reach back to my roots,” he said. “When hiring new drivers, I find underemployed white Americans and give them the jobs first.'

Yup, that'd go over great. Remember, everybody is allowed to help and prefer their own people, except evil whitey.

Anonymous Eduardo September 29, 2017 7:40 AM

@9

Actually Zaklog... If you change white with, let's say, Anglo-Americans from a certain region, you will look as harmless as they do. (For the normie view I mean)

Because you would hide the skin color.

For instance, you say: "yeah I came from a small English immigrant town (which was here before 1776) and I really wanna give back to them, it is all about helping your community!"

You don't sound so racist this way. As a matter fact, you sound like a run of the mill progressive nice guy. Sure the English are white, but you are not highlighting it, so only uber racists on the other side will be bothered.

Another perfect illustration of an alien (legal, but like that matters) who uses America as a beachhead to empower HIS people while farming the American people like they are dairy cows.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 29, 2017 8:21 AM

However, it's not all rosy good cheer and future GDP growth on the horizon.

For many conservatives and lolbertarians, that's all that matters. If GDP goes up, we all get wealthier. If you can't figure out how to get your piece of it, you're a loser, and Kevin Williamson says your community deserves to die and to be replaced by an enclave of go-getter Filipinos, or whoever will work hard to bring down the cost of living of urban opinion writers.

The owner of Chobani is touted as a "savior" of the rural economy of upstate NY. Its accepted , as holy writ, that he's a self made man who by sheer girt pulled it all off. However, looking behind the curtain ,we find that he used dozens of govt. backed loans and his arabic background to get the NY Political Machine to force the schools to serve his sugary estrogen bombs in not only the NY skools...but skools across the country. This, fascist business model, is what accounted for his initial success.
You can bet if he was a middle age white guy, the machine wouldn't have given hime the time of day.
Hes also an arrogant b**tard..insinuating that no one in this country knew how to make "real" yogurt until he - the smelly arab - arrived.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with looking after your own people; in fact it's admirable.

You gotta stop being angry at this and start looking for opportunities to do it.

Blogger wreckage September 29, 2017 8:51 AM

@13, except that of course, as social and cultural cohesion breaks down, transaction costs go up fast and hard. No balkanized state or region ever made it on the rich list.

For immigration to boost (any given value), you need a stable ethnic and cultural base; you need an actual nation for the person to immigrate INTO.

In a borderless world, immigration and trade aren't maximized, they're meaningless.

Blogger Desdichado September 29, 2017 8:51 AM

Let me tell you my story: I'm a South African trying to get into the US legally. I'm white, conservative and I was born way back when we were a 1st world country. In this regard I see myself as a unique snowflake because I actually wanted Donald Trump to win the election and I hate progressive politics with a passion. Also I like guns and titties. The only way you'll tell I'm not American is because I sound like a cross between Arnold Vosloo and that guy from District 9.

In order to make 252000 per year one would have to make around 5000 per week. Even working 7 days a week that would be around 700 dollars per day. Even keeping all the money unless the driver has a license to sell other things in his car he wont come anywhere close to 700. The most i ever collected from passengers after taking out gas driving a regular cab was around 250 dollars. People were crazy generous tippers that day. I would say driving 7 days per week 12 hours per day which is really miserable in the summer a driver keeping all the money can maybe expect if every day people are crazy generous (250×365) 109500 per year

On the other hand, it might make it easier to deport them home, because they may be able to go home AND not fall into the base poverty of their people. If we can 'sell' it that they've now got the education and some skills -- on OUR dime -- it's not so 'sad' (NOT sad a tall!) to throw them out of OUR country!

I've actually partly reached a few of the unconvinced -- that the DACA illegals have received a gazillion-times-better education and grounding in civilized (and business) life than if they had been raised 'at home.' So now, when they ARE sent home, they won't be helpless and hopeless. (Well, at least no more so than for their own kind...) Kinda like (grrrrr: we PAID for them to attend) a 'biz school for the non-American'?

"I thought it was clear from the article that he made most of that money from his custom jewelry."

It did. It gave the precise math, broken down between jewelry sales and driving.

This is, of course, nothing new. Even white Americans have always behaved like this (used to be centered on birthplace rather than ethnicity, in many cases). They usually still do, they just use proxies instead of strict ethnic ties.

The concerning part is that this comes as a surprise to anyone.

But they are also super tribal in hiring.

Anonymous BuildTheWall September 29, 2017 11:47 AM

That's a nice piece of additional evidence pointing that Tribal loyalties (Irish, German, Jewish, Filipino, etc.) come before National identity for most immigrants (not all, like Sarah Hoyt, for example, for whom "tribe" means something very different than her culture and nationality of origin).
I used to buy into the narrative that Magic Dirt created the lovely melting pot of the USA, but now I realize that the melting pot notion I was fed as a child was flavored with blue-pill.

We see the same phenom with black coaches in the NFL. They hire homies, and if they have abusive, felonious backgrounds, it's all good, because the NFL is just a work-release and rehabilitation program.

The worst has got to be Marvin... I mean, Warden Lewis of the Cincinnati Bengals. No crime is beyond his magnanimity.

And this one-dimensional idea that blacks are better because they are speedier - well - it's just one-dimensional thinking. Plenty of white players would be better and more effective in a certain role or position sometimes - but the job goes to the black. White Americans be damned, go sell insurance.

Watching Gronk run over Adam Pac-Man Jones was comical. Pac-Man looked like a kitten on a bulldog.

I note that the Patriots coach doesn't seem to hate whites as much as the rest of the NFL brass.

I think Belichick is just smart enough to say the right things publicly, but privately is likely much more Gran Torino than the Pharisees of the NFL realize, or would admit. And the Pharisees of the NFL are probably very jealous of Belichick's success, tactics, and brilliant mind. (He should be very careful of possible secret recordings that might be attempted)

I look at public statements with cameras rolling made by men in politics as maybe 25% true, and powerful corporate men at best 50% true.
