Andrew Torba promises a lawsuit:
GAB.AI, INC.,

Plaintiff,

While I hate to disappoint those who are hoping that Gab will strike back at me, I'm afraid you're going to have to... think different.

You can't play victim when you continue to register in a nation which has literally passed arabic blasphemy laws.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/act-parliament-passes-religious-vilification-laws-20160804-gqlagu.html

It's fairly easy to find the large targets, do a /whois, and go with their registrar, or go with a startup anti-censorship registrar. ICANN's accreditation guidelines require registrars follow local laws, and that's it, which means any nation with "hate speech" law is off the list of nations where it's safe to register your domain.

At this point I've come to the conclusion gab is posing on the same level as Zoe Quinn of GamerGate fame: Torba is making a grandstand con of internet conservatives.

Anonymous Justin Bailey September 13, 2017 3:22 PM

Torba is mad about the libel situation, but it would be silly to burn his capital on revenge lawsuits. I'm glad he's going to Think Different, that's where his focus should be. The Stormpoopers will be angry however, they want Gab to waste all their energy goodwill attacking Vox for them.

Anonymous krymneth September 13, 2017 3:26 PM

To be clear, the legislation was not passed by the Australian Federal Parliament, but by the Australian Capital Territories (ACT) Parliament. ACT is roughly the Australian equivalent of the District of Columbia.

It's not like Apple's motto was ever "don't be evil".

And it's finally a smart move from Gab. Apple is more vulnerable than Google but if they get a legal judgement against them it will make things a lot harder for Alphabet.

Anonymous johnc September 13, 2017 5:01 PM

But they're not denying Gab access to their stores on the basis of Gab's skin color, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.

Doesn't a store have pretty broad freedom to decide what products they sell?

Francisco Franco was an old school fascist, and embraced corporate socialism. So he would be of the left.

Augusto Pinochet left businesses and the Bourgeoisie the hell alone, and merely spent his entire reign hunting down socialists, and giving them the choice of immediate exile or execution. So he would be of the right.

I'm a little curious about what Google says about this.

Let's ask Google!

Monopoly Law and Legal Definition. Monopoly is a control or advantage obtained by one entity over the commercial market in a specific area. Monopolization is an offense under federal anti trust law

Gee, I don't know.

Does that sound like how the app store treats App producers?

I mean Apple only demands that little companies give their Apps away for free.

Apple is a hippy commune, so of course giving Apple everything you own for free is the price for doing business with them.

Like I said, their motto never was "don't be evil.

Blogger JACIII September 13, 2017 5:07 PM

I worry that Apple will take one look at Gab's altretard soiled carpet and have a good business case for denying the app. I don't know if that can save Apple from losing on "accommodation" grounds or or whatever Torba has com up with, but it can't help.

Blogger Anno Ruse September 13, 2017 5:10 PM

Torba is a genius. Sue Apple while defending the rights of fake Nazis. There's no way he'll lose, especially once he himself gets into court and shows his poise and dignity and ability to handle people disagreeing with him.

Both were warring against Communists.
Pinochet, IIRC, was called by Chilean Legislature. Pinochet never had intention of extending his rule to his children nor entrench a military rule.
Franco was protecting the Catholic Church and Spanish traditional institutions. Franco aimed at returning to the monarchy.
Pinochet was not of the right, Franco was of the right. Both were war time leaders.
Neither were fascist, although, the social aspect of the Catholic Church might be considered socialistic/paternalistic.

They were only fascists in they fought Communists.
I am sure they also agreed with 2+2=4

Anonymous Hezekiah Garrett September 13, 2017 5:10 PM

Incorrect. Franco inflicted wage and price controls on Spain, and appointed government officers to control companies, just like Mussolini did, and just like FDR wanted to.

The wage and price controls didn't get rolled back until he was nearly dead.

Anonymous Ages September 13, 2017 5:18 PM

A store does, but the Apple Store is a marketplace, merely providing a space for others to sell things. Since iOS is a closed ecosystem, and apps can only be installed through that store, they have less latitude of what they can deny.

Certainly they should not deny an app because of user generated content, like Gab. Slap an 18+ restriction on it and only screen for illegal content at most.

Yep - who was more effective in the long run? Pinochet.

Torba is full of public posturing that is stupidly dangerous as a CEO. That's a shame. He's acting like a juvenile, bragging to everyone to come to the parking lot after school to see his fight. But if Torba is dropped with one punch, or if he...gasp...doesn't even show up, he potentially takes Gab down with him.

Torba wants to cloak this behind free speech ideology, but the way he is handling the dispute with teases and taunts screams that it's more about a juvenile ego and bragging rights than about solid principles.

At any serious company, the board of directors would already be removing a CEO who frivolously postured like this. All those people who just invested in Gab should be justifiably scared.

Neither Pinochet nor Franco were Fascist.
Franco was a Catholic Royalist who considered himself to have saved Spain from the communists. He was not particularly good at governing, not least because he had to negotiate between his various blocks of supporters, and avoided killing people.

Pinochet was a traditionalist who was exterminating internal enemies of the Chilean people. He did not have any particular economic programme, but tended toward the Conservative. He did an amazingly effective job of removing Commies, to the point that post-Pinochet Chile actually implemented many Libertarian policies.
