Trump nails down Pennsylvania for 2020

The only Steeler to stand for the national anthem, Alejandro Villanueva, a former US Army Ranger.
Alejandro Villanueva was the lone Pittsburgh Steelers player who appeared on the pitch and sang while the rest of his team remained in the locker room as part of a silent protest that’s sweeping the country’s football pitches. The player, who has served in Afghanistan, has become a simple of patriotism — and now sales of his jersey have gone through the roof. It jumped the Steelers jersey sellers league on Fanatics.com, and now stands at one of the top sellers for the entire league, behind Carson Wentz and Aaron Rodgers.
This will not end well for the NFL. It's going to be very interesting to see how the Week 3 TV ratings play out. Based on the hints from things such as Villanueva's jersey sales, I would guess we'll see a decline of 20 percent or more.

That made me smile. I'm sure active duty and former military would back me up on this, deployments take a toll on your body. I remember a guy I talked to at a military base years ago who did several deployments to Iraq. His body was pretty beat up from jumping out of choppers with a full combat load on.

Villanueva got an appointment to West Point, commissioned, did three tours (two of which I understand as a Ranger), two of which happened after he didn't make the cut for the NFL, then finally gets signed to the Steelers.

I started off watching the Colts yesterday before changing the channel. So many people taking a knee. Then Villanueva was like screw it, I'm going in. Add on top of that that stupid play by the Bears at the end of the first half and it was an interesting day.

Last year they blamed it on the election. Now they're blaming it on the hurricanes. Do they even believe their own lies at this point about ratings dropping?

Right out of the blue this AM it seems the president injected the word "race" into the latest political theatre, now I assume the news cycle will be about nothing but race.

It does seem that Mr. Trump knows how to pick a feud and what chumps to elevate to fiend status.

I'm not sure how long the conservatives can prop up the taboos that rule the latter day West.

Anonymous Trump September 25, 2017 9:50 AM

The Steelers actually decided to stay inside for guys like Villeneau. He specifically mentioned not wanting to be singled out, then he goes and does this.

The headline perfectly expressed my thoughts on the matter. Yesterday the left does what it does, comes out guns blazing and tried to declare victory. I'll be one of those burning what little NFL gear I have on Youtube. It will be a small fire seeing as I've never been one to let my wife dress me up in matching jersey's, so I can watch football with her...oof. But I think the symbolism is important.

When the TV listings for NFL games include "possible protest by players, owners, and Commentators", maybe I'll tune in to see how politics and the NFL convergence are coming along. Until that time, I think it's important to make my own counter protest: If you make something that is supposed to be recreational\entertainment\enjoyable into a political statement in any way, I will no longer support you. Originally hailing from WNY, I have a pretty good read on what people from Western PA are all about. I suspect They will react strongly to the disrespect shown to our Country, but they will do it in their own good time. They will not forget.

“Yeah, I certainly disagree with what he said. I thought it was just divisive," Brady said. "Like I said, I just want to support my teammates. I am never one to say, ‘Oh, that is wrong. That is right.’ I do believe in what I believe in. I believe in bringing people together and respect and love and trust.

I had respect for Brady before, but he's just another product peddling pussy worried about his "brand". I don't expect a quarterback to alienate his teammates, but talk about a spineless coward mouthing the emptiest bullshit possible. He gave it away when his wife told him he couldn't visit Trump's White House.

Oh yeah and the whole team was in the tunnel standing for the anthem.

The mental gymnastics of the pro-kneelers is hilarious.

Four or five times on local sports radio this morning, a pro-kneeler said, "If people understood why people are kneeling, they wouldn't think they were being anti-American."

Well, dumbasses, we know for a fact that people who don't kneel during the national anthem aren't being anti-American, so perhaps you should brush up on your public rhetoric on company time.

The idiot Steelers hiding in their "safe space" so they aren't "forced to make a choice," is downright laughable.

Then they lost to the Bears. In overtime.

Funny side note: not only did they leave the tunnel late, but they retreated to it early at halftime, due to an epic Football Folly Volley.

Hey, wait a minute.

Thursday Night Football got 7.448M "viewer/streamers" in Week 3, an increase over 2016 Week 3 of +47%.

Thursday Night Football 2016 Week 3 had 17.5M viewers, 10 million more than 2017.

How does that work?

Blogger Cail Corishev September 25, 2017 10:18 AM

What made me chuckle was that, with a name like "Alejandro Villanueva," born on a naval base to foreign parents, the Left would love to be holding him up as a shining example of a Magic Dirt success story, but they can't in this case. I don't suppose they'll attack him the way they would if his name were Joe Smith and his family had been in Indiana for 8 generations, though.

Brady said. "Like I said, I just want to support my teammates."

There will be a lot of that. I said yesterday, don't expect minority (white) players to speak out against teammates, especially during the season. It's bad for the team. Villanueva is barely in the league at all, and according to his Infogalactic page, has teetered back and forth between football and a military career. The stars have a lot more to lose from division in the locker room.

Once woman are no longer socialized to believe that they are not as strong as men (cause physics and math and biology are tools of oppression) they will take their rightful place in the totally not competitive (cause competition is also a tool of the patriarchy) sports world. NFL has over saturated the market, so even 'premier' events like MNF, SNF and TNF often have dud matchups.

last year the Texans got torched by the Patriots 0-27. the 0-10 half time score might not have made people turn the game off but 0-20 before the end of the 3rd quarter means you're not going to have anybody bothering to watch the end of the game.

also, Brady was still on suspension. Osweiler's 196 passing yards lost to the Pats backup's 103. that game had to have been boring AF.

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2016092200/2016/REG3/texans@patriots#menu=gameinfo|contentId%3A0ap3000000707915&tab=recap

this year, Rams v 49ers went to the wire in a high scoring shootout, 41-39. so, good for the sports bars.

The worst SNF has performed this season so far, that’s an 8% dip from the early numbers of last week’s Atlanta Falcon’s 34-23 win over the Green Bay Packers. Gaining cheers and boos from fans at FedEx Field in Maryland last night, the third week of SNF for the 2017-2018 season declined 10% from early numbers of the comparable game of last year on September 25, 2016.

Ratings have been down during the period, but there are many possible reasons for that. I can give you at least 10 reasons why I've gradually watched less in recent years, none of which are the anthem protests.

I figure some people probably are watching less (or not at all) because of this, but it's hard to say how many, or how many will stay away and how many will find a way to be okay with it as it continues.

Anonymous Charlottesvillain September 25, 2017 11:21 AM

Blogger Nate September 25, 2017 11:22 AM

one likely scenario is that rating could be temporarily up due to the "what's gonna happen" factor. So you could see a viewership spike early... then a drop off as the game gets started. People could have turned off the games in anger over the protests... or... they may just not have cared.

the people I know who watch the NFL all the time... watched the NFL all day yesterday. And there were some awesome games.

Frankly the NFL's biggest problem right now is officiating. bad officiating kills fan interest way more than this protest crap.

What it would take for me to go back?

I am not sure. At one point simply fining those who did not show respect for the anthem would have been enough. But now seeing the players, coaches, owners, and sports media go full SJW... I think there is no going back in the near future.

Being from Detroit, I've not had a lot of interest in attending professional football games. I've been at a few but not in some time. If I went to a game and that crap went on, I'd stand for the anthem and then leave when it ended if the team hadn't stood for the anthem. Having served, my threshold is probably if any of them didn't stand, I'd leave.

Changing stations as the one I was listening to bled into another, I stopped on a black station where they were discussing it. I was not impressed or amused by their discussion. Fully on the plantation, crying about the injustice of living here. I'm thinking I'd be willing to foot the price of a one-way no return ticket to any country on the African continent so they can escape the oppression here.

The NFL should change their name to the PFL at the least. They may be professional (and that varies), but they certainly aren't National.

One of the local TV stations out of Dallas ran a news story last night analyzing the impact of NFL players' actions on viewership. Their in-depth analysis: apparently people who go to one particular sports bar - at the time the football games are being aired - are still watching football.

The media isn't panicking and running pro-football propaganda because it believes that viewership is unaffected by this spectacle.

Blogger Orthodox September 25, 2017 11:48 AM

NFL has the same problem as everyone: you can't be all things to all people, but that goes double in a diverse society. Instead of focusing on their core fan base and core mission, they are trying to appeal to everyone. How do you appeal to everyone? In modern America, it means appeal to core leftist beliefs because America is dominated by leftist institutions. Convergence can't be stopped at any institution that gives up on its core mission or tries to expand in a diverse, leftist dominated America. Institutions that stay true to their mission will be attacked for their non-convergence. Being apolitical = anti-leftist.

And then there are the leagues that can't win, like the NHL and Nascar. If there wasn't such an autistic reaction to "sportsball" the trolls would have already convinced Salon to run articles on "why watching hockey is racist." Nascar is already considered racist.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 25, 2017 11:50 AM

Frankly the NFL's biggest problem right now is officiating. bad officiating kills fan interest way more than this protest crap.

Yes. That's #1 on my list (pandering to women being a close #2). I tuned in late and tuned out for halftime, so I didn't see the protest stuff at all, but you can't watch the games and skip the bad officiating. My theory is that replay is making it worse, because refs are hesitant because they don't want to look bad on replay, and they figure replay will fix what they miss. And it has to be really hard to keep up and get in position to see where everyone's hands and feet and the ball are on close plays, so I don't know how much they can fix it.

So this could be a last-straw thing for a lot of people. They were already getting sick of the bad officiating (or other things), but the protests will be the thing that finally moves them and gets the credit.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a big drop-off next week (though they can do a lot to fudge ratings and attendance numbers), and then a gradual recovery to "somewhat down but still far more popular than anything else on TV." I'm sure most fans not watching right now are hoping it's a short boycott, and not really planning to give up the NFL forever.

the concussion issue is a bigger deal long term than this is. Just as an example... the local highschool team had 100 kids on it 2 years ago. Now... it only has 80.

This is a team that is on the rise and wins a lot. But they are having a hard time getting parents to let their kids play. Lots of kids opting for other sports now.

I suspect that trend is going to get worse.

I think people will walk away for a bit, but then convince themselves that it's not such a big deal and go back to watching. Maybe a 5-10% decline at the end of the year? I think however that that small percentage will have lasting effects. I've been a lifelong Lions fan...I still remember sitting in a buddies basement with 10 other friends watching Eddie Murray miss in 83 and the devastation that followed. The core is slowly eroding...that means the younger generation won't be sitting with dad watching the games on Sunday afternoon. Soccer (futbol) is a shorter man's game. Sure, you want a tall keeper or striker, but most of the positions favor Men just under 6' tall. The best athletes rarely dominant at the sport. (Also, at this point, if you haven't started training by age 8, you're never going much of anywhere with the sport.)

Rugby is seeing an uptick. Heck, the Men's National Team wasn't terrible for the first time in a long while. (Union Rugby.) I'd LOVE to see the AFL make it to the States, but that's a class-action liability lawsuit of epic proportions.

Lacrosse is getting big in College. And I think that's where things are going. It's a good watch, lots of fun to play and you can play it anywhere. (There's also a professional league as well, in the States.)

But the big one is the huge renaissance in Youth Baseball. It's, somehow, getting bigger across the country. (Also, note a lot of the big up & coming professionals? Yeah, there's a distinct identity issue involved.) So I think what we should expect is that Baseball is going to make an even bigger comeback.

If you have the opportunity, catch a professional Ice Hockey game in person. It's one of the best Arena sports. It's appeal really only extends to the parts of the country that gets snow, but it's a really fun time to watch in person.

I wonder if there are racial components even in this issue, as I read that it is more the white parents holding kids back because of the concussion issue. In that case the kids left playing are increasingly black, which might trigger white flight. I'm guessing that in football like life, many black kids would go out of their way to go after the white kids, and no one will worry about that.

It was the same way last year with Brandon Marshall of the Denver Broncos, who had an endorsement contract with AAFCU (a predominantly military credit union). I'm so glad I started watching golf. It's helped me drop the NFL and MLB and NBA, not to mention the college-level analogues, completely. Few dindus, high level of skill required, year-round action and a code of true civilized courtesy. Oh, the tour is trying desperately to find a dindu who can hit the ball 350 yards consistently and make 50-foot putts, but the brainwork required to analyze courses is a big obstacle. So they've tried female announcers and reporterettes but I don't think they're a big hit with fans.
The big thing is that long ago clear lines were drawn between the men's and women's games. Teeing off from different places makes the difference obvious. Of course now some tranny will sue to get into the LPGA and their racket will be crushed.
The international angle is a plus for the SJWs, but there aren't too many good golf courses in black Africa, so that's a problem.

I like watching hockey. Of all the sports, it's the one I can't play at all. I'm amazed at what can be done on a pair of skates. And the action is almost constant.

Lacrosse is really popular locally at the HS level. At the larger high schools. Smaller schools won't field a team because then they wouldn't be able to field a football team... Which is the reason my HS back in the 1970s wouldn't start a soccer team even though there were kids asking for one.

For some reason the rest of the world watches soccer. B-O-R-I-N-G. Playing it is OK, watching it not so much. I'd rather watch a chess match.

And baseball is still the American sport. If only they'd get rid of the designated hitter...

Hockey is really cool, but I think it's hard for people to get into since most have never played it at all. Most people have shot baskets, tossed a football around, and swung at a softball, at least. Hockey has a lot of little details like line changes that the casual fan doesn't even see. Then again, the casual football fan doesn't see a pulling guard unless the commentators point it out on the replay, so maybe that doesn't matter.

Oh, the [PGA] tour is trying desperately to find a dindu who can hit the ball 350 yards consistently and make 50-foot putts,

The golf media so desperately wants another Tiger (or the original back). They mope about how the players nowadays aren't superstars, when the truth is there are several superstars, so they keep knocking each other off the top spot. What they really mean is, "They're all so boringly white." Even Dustin Johnson appears to be reformed and respectable now (though he still hasn't married his baby-momma). Instead of taking advantage of that, they complain that there's not one guy destroying the field to promote.

another aspect of this is now BLM is trying to claim that the reason for the ratings drop is not because of the protests... but because blacks are mad at the NFL for firing that moron QB.

Nate wrote:"jeopardy: What is the first rule of SJWAL? Whole lotta covering up will be goin' on now."

its important to be brutally honest and objective. Objectively... these problems in the NFL in ratings and attendence predate all of these protests. So therefore we cannot objectively conclude that all of the effect is because of the protests.

Now the protests sure as hell are not helping. But there are many other factors beyond just the protests.

There was obviously a huge spike in the protests this week. But as I said before I believe the ratings for next weeks games will be more telling than this weeks.

The NFL's problems do predate the protests, but they don't predate the nasty message-fiction habit pushed by Goodell.

1 - Domestic abuse parajudicial clucking with massive on-field impacts.
2 - Grow the sport via demographics that don't give a damn about the sport (women, hispanics, Europeans)
3 - Compete instead of combat the lesser indoor football and XFL
4 - Distance itself from its natural Americanism
5 - Pinkbreasts but no boobshow
6 - SJW reffing minutae
7 - Having to come up with a matrix and decoder ring for spearing.
8 - Expanded playoffs
9 - Expansion followed by quasi LA contraction.

But see, all of that crap may be in the blender, but these kneeling morons just hit blend and the NFL has found its hands tied...by Roger Goodell, no less...to do anything to stop them.

I think the next stadium flyover should strafe the LA Chargers mid-kneel, but I don't know if there'd be any witnesses.

My city in Western Canada is too small for a pro hockey team but a lacrosse team from a larger city moved in a couple of years ago and it has become wildly popular. I only got out to one game myself but the stadium was packed, and the local cable shows some games so I like watching that. Also, college football is picking up in popularity. The city has been the host to some successful international baseball but has had a hard time supporting a minor league team lately. The Blue Jays have visited and been good to youth baseball in the city. I can't see too many hockey players taking a knee - too difficult on ice when wearing skates !

However - living in central PA, Steelers country - all local talk radio was about last night and this morning was the Steelers not being on the field for the anthem.

this is going to be a YUUUUGE problem for the Dems. Pitt and Philly have been Union Democrat towns since forever.

the problem being that blue collar Union dues paying guys ( miners and foundry workers especially ) tend to be hyper patriotic.

squatting out a big ol turd on their flag and anthem ... that's NOT how you make friends with them.

and Union boys know how to hold a grudge for Scabs.

Mike Tomlin:
"We decided to sit it out, uh, to not take the field, um, to, to remove ourselves from it, to focus on playing football."

*Kneelers lose to the fucking BEARS*

hey, Tomlin, maybe standing up for the anthem helps these porch monkeys concentrate? or maybe, just MAYBE, the White players on your team don't feel like giving their all for team mates who hate them?

Wht they are doing is holding football hostage and demanding that NFL fans choose between Social Justice and America. Some, like Nate, are happy enough to diss America anyway, there's no conflict for them.
The core audience of the NFL, however, are never going to do that.

Anonymous Sam the Man September 25, 2017 3:33 PM

A few points from a fellow that does not follow football that closely but whose parents did:

1) Football has gone from being dominated by folksy players (like Joe Montana, Joe Namath, etc) likable white guys who seemed like the better adult men in your community rather than a bunch of black thugs. For the primary white audience you simply do not connect with the players like you did 20 years ago.

2) A lot of young men I know are into computers now, they can find a much more interesting game or simulation to what for 3 hours on a Sunday. Fact is a lot of the younger guys I know that watch do so to spend time with DAD, that is when they watch the games. As dad dies that activity does too.

3) The over-saturation of the games: they used to be kind of a special event fall through winter, Sunday was reserved for football games. Now it seems their is a game every other night. This might have increased the amount of ad time, but the specialness of it was removed.

4) The amount of ads. It is just becoming unwatchable, and with political correctness there are not clever ads any more, they are all stomach turning.

5) The slow turn to the left wing politics in the NFL. Why was it last year that during the half time they were waving rainbow flags while cold paly played or the black nationalist crap with Beyoncé? Over the top preaching which, frankly regular guys are sick of.

6) Demographic changes: Chinese, Indians, metrosexuals, homos do not watch football like working class whites did. That does not explain the decline as the numbers of whites are pretty constant, but does explain why the NFL flattened out in the last decade.

I think the above issues all contributed to the decline. The NFL allowing anti-American crap last year and then doubling down this year is not so much the real cause, but the "straw that breaks the camels back". Folks were already not all that wild about the direction the product is taking, but now they have been given an absolute reason to drop the habit. Once they do so something will come to replace it and they will not go back if this fuss lasts long.

Which, if the above is correct, means most will not return, as none of the 6 issues above will change.

Which by the way shows Trump to be brilliant again. he has got his foes supporting anti-American activity, defending acts of disrespect to the flag. What idiots they were to reflexively double down.

Oh, the [PGA] tour is trying desperately to find a dindu who can hit the ball 350 yards consistently and make 50-foot putts

This is something that's been about as long as I remember: that certain sports aren't legitimate because they're "too white", or even all white. Giancarlo Stanton recently said Babe Ruth's numbers should have an asterisk "because he didn't play against black players".

The amazing thing to me is I have a ton of union friends that I know did not vote for Trump in 2016, that are rapidly turning into Trump supporters. They may not like Trump, but its an "enemy of my enemy" situation.

But my liberal acquaintances in the NYC area can't stop talking about how Trump really screwed up, and this is a disaster for him. There are central PA union Democrats posting videos on youtube burning their Steelers jerseys...but this is bad for Trump.

Liberals have built such an air-tight echo chamber, its almost incredible to witness. They literally have no idea how GOOD this is playing for Trump. I actually think Trump tweeting about linked arms being OK should be read "linked arms doesn't do as much good for me - please go back to kneeling or not showing up!"

In a contest between long-time censors shouting "Trump hates free speech" and Trump pointing out "they are protesting the very existence of america and people who died for your rights", the latter will always come off as far worse to joe sixpack, and it's absolutely hilarious to watch them completely empty the revolver into their feet.

The next time i need metal i plan on spending extra for stainless steel. I figure it will prove to be wise in the long run.

Stainless can be a good choice in many situations.

BUT.

common Stainless is not nearly as strong as most formulations of regular steel. for instance, you're never going to find a grade 8 bolt in stainless without spending a LOT of money.

I just realized that what is likely to happen to the NFL is a version of "White Flight".

I expect total year-over-year ratings to be down about 10% year this, just like last year, but the viewing type will change. Rather than watching 12-14 weeks per year, a bunch of people are going to watch, say, 6 games. The marquee matches will get views, but look for fall off in the local-type rivalry games.

In 2 seasons, when the ratings, aside from the playoffs, are down another 20% total, everyone will ask, "what happened to Football?".

Blogger Nate September 25, 2017 4:39 PM

We joke about Trump being the God-Emperor, but it's starting to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Somehow, a large number of very rich Men spent Sunday bowing a knee to Trump. They have, literally, "bent the knee" to Trump.

Trump high-grounded them so damn hard.

Ben Roethlisberger has second thoughts about the Steelers action. Time for a little make-up.

"I was unable to sleep last night and want to share my thoughts and feelings on our team’s decision to remain in the tunnel for the National Anthem yesterday," the Super Bowl-winning QB said in a statement. "The idea was to be unified as a team when so much attention is paid to things dividing our country, but I wish we approached it differently. We did not want to appear divided on the sideline with some standing and some kneeling or sitting.

He continued, "As a team, it was not a protest of the flag or the Anthem. I personally don’t believe the Anthem is ever the time to make any type of protest. For me, and many others on my team and around the league, it is a tribute to those who commit to serve and protect our country, current and past, especially the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice."

Anonymous RJ September 25, 2017 5:49 PM

Agreed. We know he got more than the $180,000 that Miss. St. offered him.

Barners need to realize that Auburn really is the Little Brother. Just can't compete with Bama, aside from a fluke upset every 8-10 years.

And what Saban has done is simply incredible, payments or no. Takes more than money to be that good every year.

When a player is on the sidelines he is at work.

Where in corporate America do they allow you to protest at work?

Also, there is no free speech at work. HR sees to that.

NFL has become a progressive institution. They have become a political organization by allowing
protests at work.

I've been watching rugby (union) for the past year and a half. I've found it to be enjoyable and I've cut down my football watching habit to only watching the local NFL team and my college team with decreasing interest in both. If you can appreciate option football, rugby is extremely fun to watch.

Being able to watch year round is an added bonus as well.

Yes, I DO stand with Alejandro Villanuev.

Been traveling today and just got back. I watched the start of Thur nite football; after the crap with the kneeling switched over to TBD netword, which is usually more entertaining than pro football these days. I rarely watch the pros any more. I do watch some college games particularly Clemson. I watch Alabama/SEC to see someone beat them. Bama does have a smoothly running team this year so they won't get beat often. My ideal would be Clemson against Alabama for the title again this year. And, yes, I am an Alabama native, and not an Auburn fan.

Question for the real NFL fans: do the players get a cut of their jersey sales?

I'd consider buying a Villanueva jersey (not a Steelers fan) but if it doesn't benefit the player, if it only benefits the league and the team, not a snowball's chance I'd buy one.

Nobody is denying they have a constitutional right to do whatever the hell they want. Donald Trump is not denying them the right to kneel. He is simply asserting that they are Fake Americans if they do freely choose to do so.
