Various and sundries

First, if you are an investor in Gab but would like to retroactively de-invest for whatever reason, there is a good chance you can still do so. StartEngine has not charged most credit cards, but the cancel button will not work if it has been more than 48 hours. However, if you contact StartEngine support, it is still possible to manually cancel the investment.

Second, the Production Editor of Castalia House is looking for up to four volunteers to help him produce print and ebook editions more rapidly. His list of requirements are as follows:
Basic requirements:
  • Command line experience in Linux or Mac OS X or a BSD, etc.
  • Experience with DVCS. We use Git.
  • Attention to detail. Much of the work involves correcting curly quotes facing the wrong direction, or italics that accidentally include punctuation, etc.
  • Concern for the way text looks, whether in print or in ebook.
For ebooks:
  • Markdown
  • Basic HTML and CSS
For print:
  • LaTeX (for marking up manuscripts, not writing new commands or environments).
  • Familiarity with basic typesetting concepts is preferred.
To help with tool development:
  • Experience writing LaTeX macros and environments
  • Python
  • Advanced Pandoc tricks (filters, custom writers)
  • Lua
  • Docker
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro (we'd like to customize some preflight profiles)
Please only volunteer if you really like doing this stuff and have at least a few hours every week to devote to it. We have a lot to do, we move fast, and our smooth operation relies heavily upon everyone doing what they do without requiring a great deal of communication or cheerleading.

@Nate:

The Good Ol' Boy system relies on not backstabbing people. At least too much. Thus, Women hate it deeply, which is mostly what killed it when they entered the work force. It's another case of "Women ruin everything".

Though, related, I think Vox's Employment Board is significantly more effective than most other Job Board systems.

Investing in GAB (shares) is not done by simply using a CC. SEC regulations require more in the purchase of stock shares. The time frame between purchase intention and being cleared for purchase is ~3 weeks. Then it's about a week and you own the shares.

Purchase of shares shows up on one's bank statement, not any CC statement.

Heh. I haven't done anything like that that I know of, but it's always a bit embarrassing to read something I put on the web months earlier and see a glaring error. I often make mistakes when I rewrite just part of a sentence; I'll either leave a word in from the phrase I'm rewriting or forget a transition word.

If I have to proof my own writing right after writing it, it helps a lot to read the text in a different font and color than I used to write it. Mistakes my brain was filtering out with the original appearance of the text tend to pop out when I change it. It's not 100% reliable but it's a useful trick. Getting mental distance from the work by working on other things helps a lot too, but that's usually not an option due to time constraints.

Blogger Assyrian Nationalist September 19, 2017 11:43 AM

It is indeed still possible to get one's investment in Gab cancelled. I thank Vox for prompting me to do so. I had previously presumed that once the August 31st deadline had passed my husband and I were stuck, but StartEngine's support said that the investment could still be cancelled as my credit card had not yet been charged. So that's all right.

Somewhere in between. You can't sell the shares for a year, and there is little chance the shares will be listed on any exchange after the year has passed. You'd basically have to find a buyer yourself.

There was an Episcopal woman minister who resigned after a few years. Stated roughly from memory, she noted that she simply couldn't handle the strain anymore. I noted to my wife that this was because she was trying to do the job herself. Being a minister isn't a job you do, it's a job the Lord does through you.

i don't even know how that's supposed to have "BTFO" Instra. Instra is the parent company to Asia Registry. Gab got a different Registrar ... just like Instra / AR told them to do.

The original deacons were handing out food to the converts, right? More waiter than leader.

In the church where I was a deacon, we deacons took care of business so the elders could quietly pray and listen to God. We kept the heat on and the bills paid and the parking lot plowed, and the elders told us on what we were going to spend money.

Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

regarding Phoebe, notice how deranged the translation has to become:
"For indeed she became a presiding officer over many, and over me also!
— Romans 16:1-2, The Source New Testament"

according to this, Phoebe held greater authority than an actual Apostle.

now, is it more likely that such translations are lying, or is it more likely that Phoebe was greater than one of the Twelve?

the actual meaning of 'diakonis' is "servant" and, at the time of the writing of Romans, had not yet been accorded as an office of the church.

"Payne´s theory, while not entirely impossible, is speculative in many regards, mainly because both the Greek term diakonos (possible meaning "servant" in a generic sense) and the Greek term prostatis (possible meaning "patroness" in the sense of being someone who provides financial ressources or legal support) may refer to activities, which are not connected to church ministry at all. Translation therefore must be based on context. It has been suggested, that Paul quite unlikely would have referred to somebody as his spiritual leader, since he was leading the mission to the Gentiles. Certain passages in epistles attributed to Paul seem to forbid women's leadership in the church (e.g. 1 Tim 2:10-14, 1 Cor 14:34-36), but ( Feminist ) scholars debate whether those verses are of genuine Pauline authorship.
"

Blogger Snidely Whiplash September 19, 2017 7:06 PM

If you allow women deacons, but not ministers, within a very short time, all distinction between deacon and minister will be lost, and the deaconettes will be preaching.

The position is a bit... unclear. The early church had deaconesses, though they weren't terribly common. AFAIK, every denomination treats the position differently. But the word itself just meant "helper or servant".

"Give them this and they'll destroy your church regardless. Ask me how I know."

They're mentioned and approved in multiple of the universally-accepted ecumenical councils. I leave further judgment to the individual.

Yes, Bishop (/Priest, long history there) and Deacon are completely different positions. Authority versus responsibility might be one way to look at it.

That's why I said "in the original sense". I can't account for every variant on the position that exists today.

You did miss a critical episode in it - the part where Gab went off the rails to attack those customers who a) took their advice for redress of defamation and b) started ridiculing those customers who had the audacity to #speakfreely against Gab's bad business practices.

Torba has gone publicly insane in real time, and the company is obviously collapsing under all sorts of pressure (some natural, some self-inflicted.) It really is nothing more than that. Vox was right (they needed professional level moderation, rather than emotion-based moderation), Torba was wrong, and now Andrew is leading his troops on a Kamikaze mission...against Gab.
