Volume V is go!

Thank you, Alt★Hero backers! It looks as if we will not be needing to hold a vote on which of the first three volumes will be continued, but we will see how things proceed from here. At this point, the video producer may need to start thinking about voice

And we will hold a vote on which of the first three volumes are made into a video. Unless, of course, we have to add more stretch goals to account for more videos. To celebrate this milestone, we have added a third page to Dynamique's story on the Alt★Hero campaign page.

"Welcome to the Global Justice Initiative."
Milo Yiannopoulos weighs in on Alt★Hero:
It's no secret that SJWs are ruining comics. If trends continue, they'll make Superman into an obese disabled pansexual Muslim woman by next spring. And who wants that? Fortunately, our friends at Castalia House still remember what comics are supposed to be about: Highly attractive heroes in skin-tight outfits who beat people up for America.

This may become more fun than Gamergate...

Blogger Cataline Sergius September 30, 2017 7:29 AM

The "Reeeees" are becoming deafening.

I swear to glod it honestly looks like this editor just dug up an old #gamergate screed and replaced "developer" with "creator."

Creators have been subject to relentless online harassment, doxing, phone calls to their homes, public ridicule, verbal assault, and even death threats. These behaviors frequently rise to the level of criminal misconduct. More often than not, the perpetrators target creators who identify with one or more minorities.

Prepare yourself for a shock, an SJW is lying. Nearly every word of that is a lie. Some Marvel writers have been subjected to honest criticism of their work for the first time ever. Now if you are an SJW I will grant that honest criticism is a horror beyond imagining. No one has ever done such a thing to us before and how dare anyone do it now!

...

I did chuckle at this very telling phrase, "creators who identify with one or more minorities." Just being Black or Brown doesn't do it anymore. You have to be a biracially Transexual Muslim lesbian born in the #WrongSkin to get any kind of competitive victim status these days.

Cool, will be waiting to see panel 3. The triggering has to be at least at Ridiculous Speed by this point, essentially one day to reach TWICE the goal and the unlocking still continues? The REEEEEE output will reach stellar levels (B supergiant) soon.

Reading the comments on the Alt Hero page, I saw a recurring them that can be addressed probably in Volume XXII, where the super-heroines marry and have children. They go into reserve or special call status (similar to "The Incredibles"). The episode where someone tries to harm Dynamique's kids or their friends will end badly (and hopefully fast). One does not wish to make Madame ... angry.

Blogger Dave September 30, 2017 8:27 AM

Cataline Sergio's: That's insane.

Blogger The Observer September 30, 2017 8:48 AM

Interestingly enough, note that the SJWs are trying to shift the narrative.

Before it was "no one will support this/there's no market for this", with the clear success of the crowdfunding they've moved onto "the art sucks" and "Vox is a con man out to scalp you gullible fools".

The panic, it grows.

I have a question: This 5000 design a hero option, for how long will it be avaliable? I have a character I would love to include, but I don't think I can get 5000 dollars this year. Will that option close at some point, will it get more expensive or what?

Keep up the great work. And expect some fanart from me either today or tomorrow ;-)

It's only planned for the next 29 days, b considering that we now have to do two more books, and will probably have to do more than that, I suspect we can save you a spot. If you can handle the Cameo level, back that, and we'll allow you to upgrade when you can afford it.

As a backer who did not read comics in the past, I have a question about the story telling style. In the frames with the guy who takes out the illegal alien child predator, there are no "acoustic" narrations of the action. With the Dynamique frames, we have acoustic narrations left and right. Is acoustic narration the norm?

I don't think we've settled on a norm yet. We're now in the process of working out all sorts of details.

Blogger Lovekraft September 30, 2017 10:02 AM

re #8 Stone:

another Dave Sim anecdote: when he was starting out, he was very self-critical, especially in how he drew hands. His mentor, Gene Day, simply told him not to be over-critical and that they are simply Dave Sim hands (his style, in other words).

Another D Sim aphorism: first you get good, then you get fast, then you get good and fast.

Funny thing about jabs like Stone's is that smug, urban hipsters who criticize art are all the same, even though they claim to be unique and daring.

Anonymous maniacprovost September 30, 2017 10:03 AM

Is acoustic narration the norm?

Yeah, usually. Or else maybe some sound lines or explosion bubble or something, it doesn't necessarily have to be the word "BAM!"

I thought that was more of a narrative sequence / flashback and we weren't necessarily hearing the sound. Been a while since I looked at it.

The Ess Jay Double-yew
Suffered from a scalzied view.
Xe threatened the monster with a torch:
A burning man, Kirby's corpse
Whom they held aloft, en masse
And swore to kick the monsters ass.

At the monster's moat,
The bloat of fen went wallowing
But an old forgotten one was following
He took up the torch and passed it to
The anti-ess jay double yew.

The monster benched the burning thing,
Laughed, then curled it with a fling
He hurled the fire into the moat
And turned the fen to creosote

The ancient man was named Stan Lee
The molten fat screamed MAKE MINE REEEEEEE--

Don't forget the fact Marvel pushes dealers to order over 100% of their needs, or they get nothing. How much inflation is in that data? 5%? 10%? 25%?

Claims are 50% or greater over-order is required on some popular titles. Here is what is going on with the current "Legacy" bait and switch. Why "bait and switch"? Only some legacy heroes come off as anything but dupes and stooges.

Wow, surprising behavior, Current Year Marvel.

What might be in a larger game of driving comic shop owners out of business? Is it similar to the Big 5 publishers desire to see B&N tank? Will this dial go past 11?

Marvel "alludes" to digital sales numbers, but chooses not to release them. I suspect that much digital content from Marvel is obtained by torrent, then quickly disposed of in the bit bin.

I suspect the digital readers are likely more discriminating than hardcopy readers due to the media, and more likely not to overlap with traditional collectors. Not good news for Converged Comic Companies if true.

I know Diamond Distributing has a stranglehold on distribution, afaik. Not to mention their massive $ cut is another turn-off.

Also, when you say volumes 1, 2 etc, do you mean issues (which are normally around 26 pages)? Or by volume, does each one comprise something in the neighborhood of 100+ pages.

I mean digital issues, which will be 48 pages. The paperbacks and hardcovers will be collections of three or more, so a minimum of 144 pages. Also, we will print on Premium Color 70 lb paper, which I understand is better than either Marvel or DC presently use.

Also, is there a release date on the digital format?

And if Digital Readers get IV, V and VI (assuming all those goals are met), I would include that in the description, because reading it as is I'd only expect to get I, II, and III regardless of what goals are met.

Criticizing the art - (locally) we dont do that, I celebrate it via a show. I provide or offer a haven for artists so skilled in a myriad of venues/genres within our association's worldview to sell/feature their work with a car show so their parents with classic cars can feature that to draw a larger aud.

Yeah, and such a novel approach. Totally different from "Trump can't get the nomination" to "Trump will lose to Hillary" to "Trump is conning you suckers!" for example. It's almost as though SJW's have cramped minds, so they filter everything through a narrow straw and always react the same way. If some guy wrote a book about that I bet he'd sell a lotta copies.

Blogger Wuzzums Fuzzums September 30, 2017 3:24 PM

There is an in depth documentary called "Rise and fall of the comic empire" by SF Debris. Can't really speak of the current state of affairs but at some time in the past all distributors were ran out of business save one which had strong ties to Marvel. This led to a monopoly which greatly affected the relationship between creators and sellers. It's pretty though to run a business when the supplier makes you order books with not much demand.

Blogger Wuzzums Fuzzums September 30, 2017 3:35 PM

They also offer a great deal of digital comics for free. Their plan is to hook you on the story so you'll pay for the rest. But not even the greatest drug dealer could push their crap. It's also a sign of a dying book. In order to clear their storage they will offer free issues; whomever buys for example the last three issues they will receive the prior ones for free. Years ago I had a newsletter to one of the big 2 and received coupons for free digital copies regularly but never once bothered to claim them.

I am looking forward to the Reeees, and now that I've backed...

I think the 'bad art' crowd is focusing on the Captain EU/GJI character. His muscles come off looking like balloons with his outfit. The artist is also a bit inconsistent with details in that there's some sloppiness in the linework/things to improve, like I'm not quite sure what's going on with Jaenneret's hair highlights often times. Mostly looks like said artist is going for speed and could use some hard practice, particularly on defining anatomy and highlights/shadows. There's valid critiques to be had, which gives the SJW crowd their cracks to delude themselves into thinking it's all terrible.

Because the EU artist definitely has the talent and is clearly able to produce. That goes a very long way. Quite like some of those panels and he's pretty adept with character emoting too, so looking forward to see him grow and solidify his style as time goes on.

Which some comic artists never manage. I've seen the memes. The terrible anatomy in comics at large is surreal at times. Same for abuse of artistic techniques to cover for weaknesses.

And that said, the art style for the US group with the bent Abrams cannon is more my cup o' tea. Highly polished and detailed - Yes Please.

Anonymous maniacprovost September 30, 2017 5:22 PM

I don't know if the artists are 20 year veterans of the comic industry or just experienced amateurs...

Since we're talking art styles, manga isn't necessarily better (usually less detailed and majority black and white, with lots of generic pasted in backgrounds/patterns), but there are some really good references. If I were drawing comics, I would try to steal some of their style to differentiate my work in the US market. Particularly, the rendering of movement in action scenes, and panel layout.

Vagabond, Game Cock, Hajime no Ippo, etc.

Blogger Wuzzums Fuzzums September 30, 2017 5:42 PM

Westerners can't really draw manga and vice versa. You can spot a "fake" so to speak from a mile away. It's something to do how the two perceive the human body/face. Westerners read/illustrate expressions through eyebrows, mouth, and body stance. Asians through eyes and movement. I wish it were just a matter of practice but Udon Entertainment is a great example, although it is certainly unique visually.

Blogger VD September 30, 2017 7:17 PM

If we compare Alt-Hero to the best comic book art out there: Rust, for example (http://tinyurl.com/y6wofwdl) or Stand Still Stay Silent or Kabu Kibuishi's stuff, it's going to fall short. But those kind of stories aren't Alt-Hero's competition.

Batman, X-men, Spidey and Wonderwoman are. And for that, all AH has to do is be as good as the average Marvel artist, while managing to tell a story that people besides Kool-Aid drinking social justice warriors want to read.

Alt-Heroes artist does not have a high bar to clear, granted, but so far it's looking decent.

Manga has proven that okay art + awesome story sells better than fabulous art and niche story (Naruto vs Mori's The Bride)

My question is, is the back history of this universe going to be explored in depth?
Was the 1939 Ouster of Hitler a direct response to the 'useless eaters' Euthanasia law? Or the assassination of Certain Italians? Are stories about the very first superhumans going to make the rounds? Or why Stalinism was defeated so early?

Blogger Brad Matthews (Deplorabard) October 01, 2017 12:44 AM

Dire,
Probably. I doubt Vox is going to repeat the mistake of Image Comics and cram the entire universe in the first issue.

Blogger Dire Badger October 01, 2017 12:53 AM

Oh, obviously, I hope not... but assuming this sells well, and lines can get expanded, I would hope that history of the world would not be 'off the table' as 'too boring for contemporary comics'.

Vox, Im very happy that this project exceeded its goals. The very fact that it did so might be a signal to some in the comic book industry that there is a vast hungry market for non-SJW titles. Probably not but hope springs eternal. But the art is well below comic standards. I would like to say its on the level of "adventures" books which are usually marketed to, intended for children; but it isn't. Every image you have released so far has been at about the level of a webcomic. I have no doubt the writing will be compelling and interesting, having read one of your books and several stories you have edited; but the art is simply not up to snuff.

Blogger wreckage October 01, 2017 6:57 AM

Serviceable and consistent art in a clean, simple style is exactly what a project like this needs. Systems approach.

Why, given everything you know about all of my projects, would you think that you should judge the nonexistent final project by what is literally the first step in putting it together?

Do you intend to critique the video quality of Voxiversity as well? That's even farther along, after all.

How do you think we are going to produce product that is superior to those of the market leaders in business for more than 60 years before we even start?

Knowing me, it will probably end up being a series of 900-page novels.

I can't, but presumably Freestartr can. I tend to think it is a useful sign of the importance of the project.

Can you moderate the SJWs vomitting word salads of pejoratives toward backers on the freestartr.com page? Or should we leave them up, b/c the triggering is funny to read?

Anonymous 0007 October 01, 2017 9:20 AM

Tried to send you an email. Microcrap wants me to sign up for outlook 20007. Can't do that because it wants info that I don't have. I don't deal well with computers and they hate me. If my user name connects to my email address can you ping me with and email I can reply to?

Seriously? Get a gmail or other throw away email account. There are lots of them out there.

Or just download something like Claws Mail: http://www.claws-mail.org/

There's no need to use Outlook for email unless you're trapped into it at work.

Blogger Dave October 01, 2017 10:45 AM

@0007

When you click the Email Vox link on Vox Popoli your browser will try and open an email program, typically Outlook, and insert the email address.

If you're just looking for his email it is voxday at gmail dot com

That's funny you think Captain Europa takes into consideration what is or is not a felony to the EU.

Captain Europa might be asking how many EU felonies are being committed in the name of democracy right now in Catalonia.

I don't see anything approaching the need for moderation, unless, of course, Freestartr has been moderating the items you're referring to.

Just pledged, really looking forward to seeing the Rebel figurine. I thought I'd heard it all and then Vox posted about Marvel removing cigarettes from the cover art of re-releases. These comics SJWs are Stalin's children. They'll erase anything they don't like out of history, including ME, YOU and YOUR FAMILY.

No. Don't care.

I don't. but if you can't compete better you know now. This art doesn't even come close.

Sorry, but you are looking at different modern comics from the ones I see. The art is haphazard at best. More commonly it's pure crap, far worse than what Vox has posted. At least the humans in Alt-Hero have human faces and normal skeletal articulation.
But ultimately the art doesn't matter. have you ever watched Rocky and Bullwinkle? The art was literally terrible. It wasn't even amateurish. It still survives, it is still quotable meme material because it was well written.
The story is all that matters.

Blogger James Dixon October 01, 2017 5:50 PM

You obviously haven't looked at the comics produced in the past decade. This art is far better than most of them. Is it great? No, but it's acceptable.

Many "artists" in comics are merely 'rotoscoping' photos of models and adding costumes and other features to produce characters, as seen in this post by John C. Wright on 'SJW Marvel'.

Weak sauce art rarely kills a book that has a strong story, but coupled with SJW unreality, Grade C art like this funk from 'Legends' will drag a book to the bottom.

Dave@100 Got it, thanks.

Blogger Markku October 01, 2017 8:23 PM

What I meant about repeating the success of the first campaign is, I'd much rather get the comic as quickly as possible to the normal way of funding the next one from the revenue of the previous ones. Every crowdfunding campaign expends an amount of goodwill of the Ilk and other fans, which is not infinite. I'd rather use it for GENUINELY new things.

Also remember that we aren't actually profiting from the raised funds AT ALL. Everything goes to paying for the project. If we raise more, then we do a bigger project. But we don't actually pocket any of that money. We only profit from the normal sales of the actual comics that the project creates. So, for any of this to make any financial sense to us, we have to make it actually sell. If we just constantly raise money with crowdfunding it, then yes, there will be a point where we have a big fat company bank account, and can pat ourselves in the back for a while. But in the end, with all bills paid, it will come down to net zero for the company.

For this to be sustainable, we have to constantly make sure that the comic remains profitable on its own merits.

Anonymous Mr. Rational October 02, 2017 1:17 AM

Markku, if you're interested in profiting you'd be well-advised to un-bundle your limited Freestartr offerings.  You're making people choose between ordering the Rebel figurine and getting the hardcover editions, because an extra 50% is beyond many people's budgets.  If Rebel was her own separate item at $120 people could choose whether they wanted paperback for $30 (total $150) or hardback (total $195) on their own, and you could still limit the figurine offering as you desire.

I note that you still haven't sold out 150, let alone 500.  I would have bitten yesterday but now it looks like I'm going to give you a lot less money than I otherwise would have.

Blogger Markku October 02, 2017 2:19 AM

You're not getting it. Even if we made 200k from the Freestartr, we STILL couldn't profit on it because that would be a betrayal of trust. Crowd funding money is supposed to go into making the project happen. More money equals bigger project. The profit comes from then selling the product to customers OTHER than the backers.

Blogger Markku October 02, 2017 2:27 AM

We profit only indirectly from any funds coming from Freestartr, by virtue of then having more stuff to sell to the "normal" customers.

As for your suggestions, I haven't even seen the interface, so I can't say anything to that.

Blogger Markku October 02, 2017 2:47 AM

As for the figurines, this is not yet SELLING them. This is giving them as rewards for funding. The 500 number is because you need a minimum of 500 for the factory to offer the best quality manufacturing method. Whatever units we don't give away to backers, THOSE we will then actually sell. Probably from the Castaliahouse.com store. The promise with regards to the number is that we will not ever make another production run with the exact same model. Rebel, most likely, but not posed the same.

Anonymous Mr. Rational October 02, 2017 3:55 AM

Markku, you're not grasping what I'm trying to tell you about the value proposition to the customer/backer.  What you're trying to tell me is irrelevant in that context.

Blogger Markku October 02, 2017 6:33 AM

Ok, Vox would prefer to do this cleanly by waiting for Freestartr to implement the proper feature for this, but of course things don't always meet deadlines in software engineering. So, assuming Freestartr allows the same user to back the same project twice on two different levels (will have to make sure), what we can do is to add a figurine-only (plus digital editions but nothing else) tier at 115 USD. Then those who want Figurine + hardcover could do a workaround, and support once with 115 USD and once with 75 USD. Then, when the real feature arrives, we'll clean the unnecessary tiers up.

Anonymous Mr. Rational October 02, 2017 11:50 AM

And that works perfectly.
