Yeah, so, about that....

Fornax has a great idea: BAN VOX DAY FROM FANDOM (pdf):
The Nerd & Tie blogger had an idea for handling the pretentious delArroz: Don't invite him to a convention ever again. That sounds like a great idea. From now on, fandom needs to shut out those like del Arroz, Correia, Hoyt and their leader Vox Day. All those who wish to trash fandom for both fun and profit should be kept out of fandom functions, such as conventions, that can accord writers and others publicity and public standing in the world of science fiction. Either you are on the side of fandom or you are against it. No middle ground.
I think it is fairly apparent that I am very much against the decrepit collection of obese, sickly, and mentally ill individuals who collectively make up what passes for fandom in science fiction. I make no attempts to write for them, sell books to them, or appeal to them in any way, shape, or form.

My contempt for them is overt and unconcealed. Even the forthcoming Alt⭐️Hero  line of comics openly spits on them and their social justice values.

I have attended precisely one science fiction convention in my life. I was a panelist at the grotesque freakshow called Minicon once about twenty years ago and I have never attended another one since. I have participated in precisely one other fandom function, a book signing at Barnes & Noble with other writers such as Gordon R. Dickson, Dave Arneson, Joel Rosenberg, and David Feintuch.

While it was the most successful book signing in that bookstore's history, the fact that none of those four writers are still alive should tell you how long ago it was. I have not done another book signing since, nor do I have any plans to ever do another one, because I don't like signing books, I don't like fandom, and I don't like public events.

I acknowledge the possibility that some of the other writers the SF-SJWs propose banning from fandom might actually care about it. In my case, however, I can assure them that any such ban will meet with neither objection nor protest from me.

No Eduardo, they didn't kick him out. They "forgot" to put the expulsion to a vote of the membership.

Vox Day is an SFWA life member in good standing, and has never been expelled.

They cain't quit him.

Also, how behind the times is the fellow? Everyone he listed has been persona non grata with the WorldCon crowd for years at this point.

Anonymous Nathan September 21, 2017 1:59 PM

The people who are drawn towards the convention scene tend to share the same affliction:

G. R. R. Martin? Legendarily late on his next book. John Scalzi? Late. Scott Lynch? Late. Pat Rothfuss? Somehow even later than Martin. This doesn't count the legion of Tempests who haven't written anything for five years yet still demand that readers follow their whims. In comics, Twitter primadonna Dan Slott is known for treating deadlines like a suggestion.

It's getting to the point where fans unaffiliated with either Puppy or Kicker factions are getting angry with Martin and other writers who would rather be big men on the convention scene than write their next book. SFF of all genres would be better off if the convention scene dries up and vanishes as productivity would increase.

Blogger James Dixon September 21, 2017 2:02 PM

Ban specific attendees from publicly hosted events? While possible, I believe they may find that there are some problems with that concept, especially when the specific attendees area protected minority, say Hispanic.

There were more than 251 at that event. I probably signed over 100 myself. Spacebunny had previously set one up there for the Rebel Moon release that went extremely well, we had over 200 that night. Which was probably why I was included in the big SF one with Dickson, Arneson, Bujold, Rosenberg, and everyone.

@Jagi,

I imagine it is because she's called out various members of SFWA acting badly before--including Mary Robinette Kowal, she was vocal in the SP2-3 years in overturning the White male Mormon narrative, and she "led" Sad Puppies 5. That, and she's a bit more memorable a persona than Kate Paulk or Brad Torgersen.

Has to be due to leading Sad Puppies 5. Clearly they have no idea about Vox and Hoyt's back and forth on Hoyt's support for Magic Dirt Theory seeing as she was born American in Portugal, and her story in Forbidden Thoughts was the least "forbidden" as the anti-abortion message was washed away by her pro-scadinavian-girls-should-burn-the-coal & genetics-has-nothing-to-do-with-human-behavior" messages, which are pure SJW/cuck. Yeah, she's clearly in line with Vox.

But hey, Sara is not sufficiently left of Che Guevara, so to these fandom twinks, she has to go. The same will happen to you if Superversive ever gives even an inkling of a challenge to the degenerates of fandom. Thankfully, Castalia is taking the lead and should keep you guys out of the hate light.

Blogger Heian-kyo Dreams September 21, 2017 3:07 PM

Anonymous Durandel September 21, 2017 3:23 PM

Mr. Rector is interesting with this edition. The beginning pieces of the eletter/zine are very SJWish, especially the piece on Hoyt and how her article at PJMedia spews hate, everywhere, and on everything because it just does and it is 2017, or something. Then at the bottom, he has a review for Danger & Play that is mild and seems to give a general approval of the Unz Review. Maybe he just has a trigger spot for those who call out liars and fixed awards?

Boring newsletter overall. How did you stumble upon VD?

Even Jim Butcher, who maintained quality for an awfully long time, seems to have been eaten by cons and side projects. Last Dresden book was 2015 (and the next one won't be here until at least 2018, possibly later considering the next summer release of the second short story collection) and no word on Cinder Spires whatsoever. The procrastination in fantasy is something that deserves an explanation, because despite the fact people like making fun of Martin for it it isn't just him.

Blogger LP9 September 21, 2017 3:52 PM

Who's Fandom again?

Fandom never placed fans first.

People dont understand the man doesn't do public events, he said so many times. We've seen the gross pictures and even mcrapey whom grooms his daughter to be a feminist, play a song on ukulel at convention, its cringe worthy.

Cosplay is (not great poor fashion, terrible hair) from ages 16 to 21, its stops in adulthood, it has too unless halloween.

Convecs unless semi formal or required or really important are misery; depressing, germy, unsafe, obesogenic, loony for pretty people anyhow.

I would go to a deploraball for a gown but nah. Throwing a Trump party every 8th of the month is enough fun.

Blogger Chris Lopes September 21, 2017 3:55 PM

Most real SF/F fans (that is, the people who buy books in enough quantity to keep their favorite authors in lawn care products or ammo) don't go to conventions. They are usually too busy leading their lives to travel a 100 miles or so to play dress up. For them, SF/F is a form of recreation, not a lifestyle choice.

If your average author really had to depend on the con goers as their sole audience, most would need 2nd jobs working at Wal-Mart. Working authors understand this. It's the ones who see writing as a hobby that insist on playing to the con goers.

Blogger Demonic Professor El September 21, 2017 3:59 PM

Meetups in meatspace are fine, but cons are...cons. There are fans, and there are "fans."

Like anime - there are people who've seen a couple, thought they were cool, etc. Then there's ANIME! fans - who think it's real and derive their philosophies from it.

OR: Any group who thinks George RR Martin has anything insightful to say about humanity is not a group I'd want to be around...
