Your conscience is clear

You need not worry about the fate of Alt-Tech. Your departure is not hurting them in any way, as per Maximum Alpha Torba. I don't know to whom he is referring here, but then, I suppose it doesn't really matter.

UPDATE: I have been informed that hearing for the petition we filed is scheduled in Travis County for the last week of October.

What a narrow perspective Torba has. He may see you as a "cult leader" but a better viewpoint is that your're the "canary in the mineshaft." You focused attention on the toxicity that is Gab. Free speech is an admirable God-given right. But there's a world of difference between the free speech of intelligent men who disagree on important topics, and the "free speech" of young children hurling insults in the playground.

I was going to invest $5,000 in Gab, which is a really big amount for me. I figured that Twitter was going to get crazier and crazier, eventually Twitter would ban President Trump and he would move to Gab. Good thing I never quite pulled the trigger on that investment.

Blogger Elocutioner September 21, 2017 11:42 AM

Turning into StormGab causing numerous people to cancel their Pro accounts and turning away future customers, including a constituency that supported and promoted you for your first year, really doesn't in any way hurt the fledgling startup. How big exactly IS his lawn?

So which one of you will be the Black ranger? Come on... We need a Black one or Alpha Torba won't be able to use it's Fifth Member and pull the flaming sword out.

I will be your worthless Alpha 5 robot... Annoying as ever and can do chores around the secret base.

Anonymous Rum Raisin September 21, 2017 12:09 PM

Sun Tzu applies just as much when you are your own enemy. Torba doesn't know himself. He asks, why are people leaving Gab? He doesn't know the answer and pretends not to care. Gab's fate is sealed.

Anonymous Battlefrog September 21, 2017 12:10 PM

This is what zero self-reflection looks like.

I did not pull my $1.5K investment from Gab because of Vox. I pulled it because Torba has shown himself to be a complete and utter ass of a CEO. I'm actually quite embarrassed I invested that much on a mistaken reading of the CEO's character.

There is no sophistication in his thinking. He thinks he is running the Trump model only because he has idiot's understanding of the Trump model. And he seems incapable of adjusting. His misunderstanding of how to handle libel is forgivable. Acting like a character straight out of Idiocracy is not.

Yes Eduardo, we never had that. We had actual American heroes like GI Joe, Col John Matrix and Kyle Reese.

But on the flip side, my eight year old son loves Power Rangers, and each iteration of the show usually has some sweet young thing as the yellow ranger. So I can watch the show without totally losing my mind. But I'm a grown man, so YMMV.

Jeff,
Investments should produce a reliable income stream. Buying and hoping something takes off is gambling and there are far better options for 5k. We are programmed today by the regret we didnt get on board early mentality, now known as investing.

I knew that Gab was much more of a gamble than an "investment." Growing up in Silly-Con Valley you get the idea pumped into your head that the best way to get ahead is by getting lucky on a startup. It's amazing how in life often the best investments are the ones we don't make.

Blogger lowercaseb September 21, 2017 12:29 PM

You are 100% right. Hopefully, we can learn from it. This next week is going to be interesting out here when Milo and friends come back to Berkeley, but I don't want to go too far OT.

Anonymous Steveo September 21, 2017 12:29 PM

I did not foresee the failure of Gab to take a stand against profane, disgusting & childish - coordinated attacks against users. Given Gab's early growth phase, this will prove to be a serious obstacle. After a couple hundred mutes, your timeline will be meaningful again, but the incredible community that was the #GabFam was seriously harmed by the alt-reichtards. IMO nothing good was gained. This may prove to be an expensive lesson.

Thought experiment: I wonder if Andrew Torba would sit in a restaurant with his children & subject them to that verbal abuse out of regard for free speech, were it to happen at a nearby table?

Would he tolerate that abusive nonsense, were he the owner of the restaurant?

Would he return to the restaurant with his children knowing that behavior was acceptable & likely there?

The purpose of a Silicon Valley startup is not to make money. It is to extract money from investors. You get a huge pool of money, pay yourself a very nice salary, use your position to spread the money around to your friends and to buy influence, and eventually try to get bought out by someone who knows how to make money.
Twitter is losing money on $4billion revenue per year. Why? Because they're not trying to earn a profit. They're trying to get more investors.

Having seen 8 Chan lose their original name, and be told - go back to a US-based registrar for .net, where they respect property rights - it's an odd choice to have gone for the trendy "artificial intelligence" TLD instead of one that would have been within the American spirit of freedom of opinion... They must be really clever to have made this choice, as it looks like this battle was set up from that very beginning decision.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 21, 2017 3:42 PM

@85,

To be fair, no one was thinking about the registrars as a front in the battle years ago. (Gab.ai started in 1995, but I have no idea when the current owners got it.) We just weren't. Maybe it seems obvious now, but it wasn't then. If you worried about anything being taken down, you worried about your hosting, because your hosting company, unlike your registrar, actually stores and transmits the data in question. So you registered domains where they were cheap, where they had other services you liked, where you'd heard they were reliable and had good service, where your web designer suggested, etc.

Blogger LP9 September 21, 2017 3:53 PM

Someone poisoned Andrew Torba's mind in 2016 and in the current day against Vox.

However, I can fathom what The AT/Ustav strategy is. Its literally the perfect manner to make people with money, genuine interest, heart, pride leave in horror.

In the future, those 2016 matters should have been mentioned sooner. It would have been educational in watching younger people in business ignore good advice and ultimately associating with Anglin.

On another note, it spoke volumes to me when I joined, Annie (Coulter) is not active there. It was unfortunate to drag women into a man's dispute. I've honestly wondered if these people without kids do not understand the implications over the last few weeks of defamatory acts in addition to releasing alleged tape recordings.

Appalling.

Nothing to do with artificial intelligence.

He wanted gabai. Asia Registry (owner of the .ai TLD) is in Aus.

A Gabai is the official in the synagogue who selects the person to read from the Torah, and (sometimes) corrects mistakes in reading or pronunciation.

Blogger Noah B The Savage Gardener September 21, 2017 3:59 PM

@90 Domains have been getting yanked for years when crime is involved, so this isn't a new issue to those who are following copyright cases, for example. The new development is that domains are being revoked and internet services denied due to concerns of political correctness in the US, where no crime is even alleged.

In Australia, much of the speech that Gab wants to protect is considered criminal and has been for a very long time. So the threat to the domain should have been apparent.

Blogger Noah B The Savage Gardener September 21, 2017 4:01 PM

Blogger Cail Corishev September 21, 2017 4:12 PM

Asia Registry (owner of the .ai TLD) is in Aus.

The ultimate owner of .ai is the government of Anguilla. Asia Registry is just a place that resells it, and there are many others. There might not have been so many resellers back when they purchased it, though.

You can purchase .ai domains directly from the government of Anguilla, by the way, and eliminate one potential weak link. It sounds like more trouble, though, because they handle it manually by email and phone, and maybe more expensive.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 21, 2017 4:20 PM

So the threat to the domain should have been apparent.

I'll take your word for it; all I know is it wasn't on the typical web developer/owner's mind before now. It does seem that the Gab founders had an awfully naive idea about what they could get away with.

That's assuming they intended this policy from the start. I know they advertised it as a free speech site, but most people understand that has legal limits. I tend to think that their "and we mean it THIS MUCH!" stance now is more about rationalizing something their emotions drove them to do.

What's also funny... in the US, the post that Gab banned weev over is protected speech. Meanwhile they allow defamatory, non-protected speech to remain posted.

So while Gab is busy burning bridges everywhere, they're also failing at their core mission of providing a platform for constitutionally-protected speech.

It's bad enough to post under the influence of meth, it lacks class to adopt it as a nym. It's like if Torba was on Gab as @cokenose.

97 Honey do you need me to take your temperature? Please understand insulting the group, Day's, etc., is not an argument or common sense.

Something else rather cute was how gossipy men really are, its their guilty pleasure but they call it observations and tweets.

I'm so proud of everyone at gab/tw-tar, lovely. I hope to see Andrew Torba marinate on all this even more, he will gab it, be ready.

Blogger LP9 September 21, 2017 4:47 PM

99 yes Gab's complicit in breaking the law and challenging registrars that dont want to be hassled just run your site, do your own thing but no, didn't work out that way, there was peaceful smarter resolution that Vox offered they threw it away, the court date was swift, carry one gentlemen, very proud, supportive, etc.

And really, I was aggravated by the lack of respect for Jerry's passing.

@97

Just what kind of crutch are you on, Kryst?

Blogger Eric Mueller September 21, 2017 5:32 PM

Wow, what a dick.

I figured he got Gab.ai because Gab.com has a domain squatter.

I haven't cancelled my Pro membership yet. I keep hoping the membership will stabilize, but I guess that's not going to happen any time soon.

@VD I think y'all should make up ... http://matthewhopkinsnews.com/?p=5343.

I think y'all should make up.

A laudable goal. All Andrew has to do to make that possible is get rid of all the defamation of everyone there. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not even looking for an apology.

Until I am informed that has happened, there is nothing to make up.

I have expressed myself very clearly on this matter. The defamation will be going down one way or another. If Andrew prefers Gab to go down with it, so be it.

> I exchanged a message with StartEngine and they politely said they couldn't do anything and recommended I get in touch directly with Gab.

If you used a credit card and StartEngine has not yet billed it then they should be able to cancel the transaction. If they have, they are correct. You could try contacting your credit card company directly for advice.

Because (per Leibniz) we know that we are living in the best of all possible timelines, I am confident that this conflict will be resolved amiably (unless one or more of those involved are malicious actors).

Since everyone on Gab was mostly preaching to the choir, being banned from Twitter, is not much different from solely being on Gab. At least with Twitter, you had the chance of word spreading beyond the echo chamber. Gab hasn't even come close to becoming a legitimate alternative to Twitter yet, so it wouldn't be much of a loss.

Blogger Cail Corishev September 21, 2017 9:10 PM

the post that Gab banned weev over is protected speech.

As far as I know, the post by Anglin that started all this had nothing illegal about it either. To me, that's when the game was up, before they amped up the bravado, before Vox was even involved. Torba admitted that they couldn't keep a post up if an upstream provider (in that case the registrar) made it a dealbreaker. Caving in was understandable, because he had no choice; but it also made it clear that he couldn't guarantee anyone free speech at all, let alone to the radical level he's insisting on now.

"Maximum Alpha Torba"

That's Vox Gay using the sneering sarcasm of a gamma.

Power Rangers? The appropriate cartoon for such a team is obviously Voltron. Or maybe Thundercats.

Or this: https://youtu.be/SwSDLb7wzek

What a sick man Torba must be to be working with a cult leader. Perhaps he is buddies with one of them Indian street shitter Guru cult leaders?

I always found the Thundercats a lesser version of the Herculoids.

Anonymous Brick Hardslab September 21, 2017 11:22 PM

ThunderCats are lesser to no aliens! Does anyone else have the sword of omens? No I didn't think so.

Blogger Stan_qaz September 21, 2017 11:41 PM

weev's post https://archive.fo/D70Yr gets taken down but Amazon is still selling John Ross' Unintended Consequences book that makes it look pretty tame?

https://smile.amazon.com/Unintended-Consequences-John-Ross/dp/1888118040/ref=sr_1_16

Blogger roughcoat September 22, 2017 12:35 AM

What does Unintended Consequences have to do with anything?

You're comparing the behavior of two different companies. You're also comparing a gab-tweet about real life to a clear work of fiction (that's been out of print for well over a decade), a work of fiction which doesn't even cover the same subject matter as said gab-tweet. I haven't read Unintended Consequences recently but I'm quite sure it's not about "teaching Jews a lesson".

UC is not even an extreme example in its genre. Oh, it was at the time it was published--as I recall, it earned Ross some attention from the feds--but I can immediately think of half a dozen books that since pushed the envelope a lot farther than UC did. Bracken's Enemies trilogy, for example.

Anonymous Jack September 22, 2017 12:39 AM

@116 Agreed. Herculoids were awesome, used to watch them on USA Cartoon Express.

The best 80s cartoons were Thundarr the Barbarian and Robotech, IMO.

I've said before, there probably wouldn't be an AltRight if a generation of men now in their late 30s early 40s hadn't grown up on hero cartoons, hero tv shows, and action movies in the 80s. I must say, I'm pleased that the young'uns have rediscovered synthwave soundtrack music.

122 I was retracted I was in error, and removed my comment, I was mistaken; I stated that Amy called Vox a traitor, I was wrong, Mea Culpa - my error - I am sad that Andrew Torba as of today has not made things right when it would be so easy to do such.
