4 days left

And less than 5k to go to the role-playing game. But we're not just sitting around with our fingers crossed, we're continuing to make progress on every storyline. Here is a snippet; to see the full page sketched out with updated dialogue, visit the campaign and scroll down.

We will have a new draft page or image up there every day until the campaign ends, plus a very exciting new Reward that will be announced on the second-to-last day. There are also some interesting possibilities to discuss here; it turns out that it would be possible to publish these in conventional 24-page black-and-white paperbacks through our conventional channels.

This won't be part of the campaign, but would there be any potential interest in those if they sold for $5? They could either be b/w or color; they wouldn't be a conventional comic book cover, but a regular perfect-bound paperback the same size. I'm NOT saying we intend to do these, but it is genuinely doable.

This is really OT, but I found it too random to not be perhaps an act of divine meaning...
They know what they are trying to do, and in no certain terms will tell you if you think you're not really paying attention.

I personally wouldn't be that interested in the paperbacks for personal use, but as others have pointed out, cheap copies to leave all over the place might be an excellent idea.

The number of backers goes up so fast, that you can only manage to grab a particular number by madly refreshing the browser until that number minus one comes up. Snooze for two minutes, and it's gone.

No, we can't determine that because it can EASILY be a legit donation, who wanted to be able to say on /pol/ that he became the 1488th backer. But it's convenient enough that it may be wise to check the card as quickly as possible.

Of course we have everything already exactly negotiated and budgeted. All the stretch goals were just a question of do we give the project green or red light.

Blogger Markku October 25, 2017 4:52 PM

Before a new stretch goal is even announced, we have already negotiated the price tag for the project. That's why the number is what it is.

Anonymous DO4Harambi October 25, 2017 4:54 PM

@51 Why wasn't the RPG offered as a stretch goal from the get-go?

Blogger Markku October 25, 2017 5:04 PM

Because we had not been approached with the proposition yet. When you have a 100k pile of money, rapidly growing, you tend to find more enterprising spirit around you than when you merely have ideas.

Anonymous DO4Harambi October 25, 2017 5:08 PM

@53 Ah! Personally... and i know Vox is clear that you guys are on the ball... i am surprised that an entire game complete with a 250 page book (which i assume will be illustrated to some degree) is a mere stretch goal. Seems like it is as big an undertaking as the whole comic line.

Blogger Markku October 25, 2017 5:11 PM

I'm pretending to not know you're not Jason so I don't have to delete you. In this case, the system was already there, it just needed a good license to attach to it. And Alt-Hero works nicely together with what already existed.

Blogger Ingot9455 October 25, 2017 5:12 PM

@54 From the hints we've been given (haven't been listening to the Periscopes) it's a reasonably well-known RPG pro. When you're talking reasonably well-known RPG pro, you're talking someone who probably already has notes on how they would write a superhero game; or who might have already run test campaigns for their starter group. I wouldn't imagine that this entire game is being written ab initio, completely from scratch with no prep of any kind.

Blogger Markku October 25, 2017 5:16 PM

(Scratch the second "not")

Anonymous DO4Harambi October 25, 2017 5:22 PM

@55 So if I read you correctly, you are licensing Alt-Hero to a game creator, he is not making it for you from scratch. You don't need to raise funds for the game, because the licenser is paying you?

Blogger Alfred Genesson October 25, 2017 5:24 PM

@VD 5 each for 24 page is a little high. Perfect bound helps. Would going to the size of the free trade debate allow for higher page count at the same price? If so, I'd recommend that instead. If not, it's still ok, as you won't have ads.

Blogger Markku October 25, 2017 5:26 PM

Not entirely from scratch, in that the base game mechanics already exist. Obviously there is a lot of creative effort in worldbuilding, adventures, and so forth. And no, it works the other way around. We hold exclusive license to the final product, though not to the base game mechanic underneath it. In other words, that can be re-used for other products. So, we are paying for it, but only for the adaptation of what exists, to the world of Alt-Hero.

Blogger Markku October 25, 2017 5:28 PM

In software engineering terms, you might compare it to a developer having a framework, and you ordering a full CMS solution for your company that uses the framework.

Blogger Markku October 25, 2017 5:30 PM

That is going to be a LOT cheaper than saying, "I want the code to be created from scratch, and I want to own exclusive license to all of the code in the project".

Blogger S1AL October 25, 2017 5:32 PM

Mechanics can't come under copyright, anyways. That's why D&D finally gave up - the only thing they could maintain was unique terminology.

Anonymous Avalanche October 25, 2017 5:32 PM

@6 'Just had a vision of masked men breaking into public school libraries "

This reminds of me a wee 'action' I took some years ago. I made "bookmarks" -- about 6"x1.5", and protected with clear packing tape. I put on both sides some data from the CDC (referenced, so the kids could look it up if they wished) specifically on STDs in blacks as against Whites. Ended the data (it's pretty horrific!!) with the warning: "DON'T date outside your race!"

Would go to the local library, look over the young adult teen romance kind-of books, especially any with miscegenation, and slide a bookmark into the book, not sticking up; but in the book. My theory was the teen girl (of course) would check out the book, get it home, and when she began to read, find the bookmark. Just a way of 'ringing a bell' that the girl could not then 'unhear.' And, by providing the CDC ref, she could go look it up if she wanted to reassure herself about (or 'disprove') the information.

So, definitely, an inexpensive version of Alt*Hero for handing out, leaving around, would be good... except I think B&W wouldn't attract. If there were a way to do an inexpensive color version available only in mass(-ish?) quantities to, say, to schools or churches or 'social' organizations (teen clubs?!) -- and to Alt Righters with the spare cash? -- the color version (maybe even an edited-down one?) would be great.

I'm thinking of doing (if okayed), once the comic has come out, a single page "flyer" (two-sided) -- like the first page posted with Dynamique, which is what made me -- a non-comics person -- throw in chunks of change and actually look forward to it. That first page (or such a page as suits) with "where to see more"; and the other side a page from one of the others comics, with "where to see more." That (for me) is the kind of thing to "accidentally leave behind" on the bench in the gym locker room or on the library table. To hand out to someone I see reading a graphic novel, or looking at them in the supermarket.

Anonymous DO4Harambi October 25, 2017 5:35 PM

@60 Thank you for clearing things up. Another question: is the nature of the "volumes" (I assume this means "issues") changing, as indicated at the top of this thread? Vox is now talking about 24-page B&W books, but the pledge drive is for nine 48-page stories, in color, correct? Three paperbacks of 144 pages each?

Anonymous Avalanche October 25, 2017 5:39 PM

@18 "Guess what backer number took the 5k slot? Somehow I don't think that's a coincidence. https://i.imgur.com/LgJVdsO.png."

FANTASTIC!! I had to go look twice cause I didn't get it at first. Thanks Markku for pointing that out!

Blogger Markku October 25, 2017 5:43 PM

We just talked about this today. Yes, those numbers are correct. However, we were just offered more reasonable prices for 24-page books than we ever imagined. So, now we're thinking, make one 48-page volume from TWO stories, 24 pages each. That gives a huge amount of freedom in production. 24-page product, 48-page product, and three volume omnibus.

You see, since you've been gloating so much about Diamond, and we received an excellent offer for American logistics from someone we know, that gives me certain ideas. Yes, the 60% wholesale discount IS a bit of a pain. But now I want to do it just out of evil spite. Since we actually have all the pieces together and it's only a question of the wholesale discount. If it's just one of the three sizes, it shouldn't cannibalize our main sales too much.

No decisions yet. But I REALLY want to do this now.

Anonymous Avalanche October 25, 2017 5:44 PM

What's the general feeling around here? Maximize profits? That's money to fund more Castalia projects. Or maximize blood vessels popping in SJW brains from seeing triggering products in safe spaces? That's a more daring strategy. It still may end up moralizing our side, and hence lead to better crowdfunding success in the future. But money in your pocket is always money in your pocket.

Blogger VD October 25, 2017 5:56 PM

It strikes me that splitting maybe the first few stories into smaller volumes, at a lower price, and then sell them in packs as well as singles. This allows people to buy a pack of 5 or 10 and give them away.

Though I think what might interest a lot of the readers of VP would be having the cheaper volumes shared among the friends of their children.

https://www.freecomicbookday.com/

Next one appears to be May 5th, 2018. The Ilk that know their local comics shop could have deliver 5-15 copies to be included. It's guerrilla Trigger-Marketing. Though the volume really needs to hit home.

Blogger S1AL October 25, 2017 6:21 PM

There are a lot of smaller comic/hobby shops for whom cheaper versions are a huge deal. Throwing a quarter of the cost at an unproven product line makes it infinitely more palatable for those guys.

Blogger SmockMan October 25, 2017 6:36 PM

Anonymous Causal Lurker October 25, 2017 6:49 PM

Trigger, by all means. Make money and build interest for the full color editions, both with great stories.

Then put the Jenrette shoots as an additional special line. Paris for lingerie, Milan for medium and high fashion, and Corfu for the swimsuit issue. Many poses per issue would be similar, so it's the clothing finish that changes. REEEEs from the swimsuit issue would trigger a supernova event.

I feel for the Captain, after that B&W page. I wonder which intervention page ends with him clapping hand to head from the shriek of "... and I chipped a NAIL, you dog!"

If the mystery RPG designer hasn't been revealed, when will that happen?

Anonymous Man of the Atom October 25, 2017 8:23 PM

VD -- consider that 1960/1907 comics were often collected, manga-like, into B&W volumes.

Example is Wally Wood's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents. The color comics were 48 to 64 pages, but B&W paperback editions featured two comics in one book.

In the 1980s, Marvel also published paperback-sized color reprints of early issues from the 1960s via Pocket Books -- each book had 5 to 6 color issues.

Sales figures? Dunno. They hooked me, but I'm one data point.

Color artwork that translates well to B&W is key -- Wally Wood, Alex Toth, Gil Kane, Steve Ditko, Russ Manning, and others are examples.

It's often too difficult for public or school libraries to order "kickstarter" books. So if this format from Castalia means we can get it from the same distributor that gets us SJWAL and Law Dog Files I can (and assuming it passes muster) will order it.

Also, I'm working with a friend on getting a teen RPG club going at one of my branches. I've already promised them a copy of MHI to play with. Sure hope we can get AH as well!

Anonymous Bastiat October 25, 2017 10:43 PM

@70 Markku: Extra monies should go to recruit Mr. Wright to write a campaign for the RPG. Reading through Somewhither, and Count to a Trillion, it sometimes felt like the characters he has are from a campaign he did: with his family creating wacky characters which he then masterfully weaves a backstory around.

Or maybe just a short story anthology with a bunch of Castalia House & friends writers jumping in the AltHero world for a story or two.

The rate of people backing the campaign has definitely jumped, although I'm not sure by how much.

@91: You know what would help? Someone streaming their sessions. It's easier to do when people are using a tabletop simulator or some sort, but there are those who simply put a webcam at their table.

It really makes a difference seeing people actually sitting down and playing the system and seeing how it works; those unfamiliar with a system can pick it up much easier by watching others play.

If backer #1488 is declared legit we'll have to throw a celebratory gay Jew dance party because that is some epic-tier trolling. What a magically timeline this is.

The cheaper you can get the better on a newsprint edition. If you're going to do an actual line off comics at some point you might look at a buck fifty edition like I saw on Diversity and Comics Scrimshaw was the name of the comic.

So if this format from Castalia means we can get it from the same distributor that gets us SJWAL and Law Dog Files I can (and assuming it passes muster) will order it.

It will be the same one. They're actually very excited about it.

Now that the monthly royalty checks are rolling in I can finally pony up some cash.

With the way the reward levels are being smashed through, this might be a good one at the 200K level. ;-)

Change your nick to "Subversive". You've earned it.

Apologies if this is old news. I wanted to bring the following Android game to your attention, in case you need it on your radar re: copyright/trademark/naming collision reasons:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://play.google.com/store/apps/details%3Fid%3Dcom.PureSky.AltHero%26hl%3Den%26referrer%3Dutm_source%253Dgoogle%2526utm_medium%253Dorganic%2526utm_term%253Dalthero%26pcampaignid%3DAPPU_1_zD_yWZKALuPd0gK1zIPYBA&ved=0ahUKEwiSlojwio_XAhXjrlQKHTXmAEsQ5YQBCDkwAw&usg=AOvVaw3w0qQFeWsUQS1-tSyimZjG

It describes itself as "Alt Hero - fastest level up RPG".

Completely different font and look with no star in the center. Since it's different media I'd say there's no conflict, but then IANAL,

If Vox wanted to release a video game based in the universe, then there might be a problem.
