Alt★Hero FREESTARTR is back in business

Freestartr has fixed the system that I broke and you can now safely back the campaign and make additions again. If you are one of the six or seven people who backed the project in the last 12 hours since the last database backup, you will be contacted to confirm that the amount of your backing is correct. Both of the new Rewards, for the Rebel Figurine alone and for a single Poster, are now functional, although you'll need to scroll down to the bottom of the Rewards until they get them arranged in order later today.

In other news, we have decided to remove the 150k Stretch Goal of the 15-minute video and replace it with the creation of an Alt★Hero web site, complete with forums. I spoke with the producer, and we decided that rather than do a small video now, we'd prefer to concentrate on building a strong foundation for the series, then crowdfund a more ambitious video project next year that will be written by Chuck Dixon and me. This means that we can spend more of the resources that the backers are providing us on actual comic art and books rather than on a single video that is too short to serve as much more than an expensive marketing tool.

In the meantime, by popular demand, here is another image of Rebel. She does not cuck or cower.

"adding a new Reward of a single Poster"

Excellent news. I really want a map.

This is great. A complete hero list, broken down by group affiliation and with their profiles and a bit of great art should be instrumental. Perhaps in wiki form, so the fans can maintain it?

I'd also like to reiterate my previous question about any new things the really high backers might be receiving that isn't in the description - I think you mentioned the novel ebooks, but are there plans for anything else (eg. posters)?

I'll second being interested in the map.

Anonymous 5343 Kinds of Deplorable October 20, 2017 7:40 AM

This art is absolutely stunning. Every one of his pieces is poster- or cover-worthy May we take it from the frequency with these images of Rebel are popping up that this "third" artist is not the one who has found himself unable to sustain the pace? [hopes and prays]

Blogger The Observer October 20, 2017 7:42 AM

@3. It's not, thankfully. Jinjerzilla publicly announced himself bowing out of the project a few days ago. This isn't his work, that's for sure.

Its funny... sometimes an appendix or roster is the best part of a given hobby. Its like how we all spent more time reading the Monster Manual than we did actually playing D&D. The most read comics I owned as a kid were the Marvel Universe comics that were basically like the Monster Manual for Marvel.

We plan to give them one of everything.

Blogger Duke Norfolk October 20, 2017 8:02 AM

About that image. I generally love it, but her right eye looks wrong. I understand what's going on there, as she looks to her left we see more of the white of the eye and her iris/pupil get lost in the "mask". But it looks kind of creepy. Especially combined with shadowing of the left eye that makes the white of her eye disappear unless you go close up.

I'm no artist, but I'd say it would be better to show a bit more of the colored part of the right eye and lighten the shading on the left part of the face, to avoid the dead-eyed look that is my impression.

Blogger Duke Norfolk October 20, 2017 8:03 AM

I think the replacing of the video is a great idea. Much better use of resources for now, IMO.

Anonymous Killua October 20, 2017 8:14 AM

A forums sounds awesome. Great idea.

As Duke said, the right eye looks wrong. The eye's shape itself is different from the left eye.

Hope Freestartr fixes it soon, I was finally getting around to throwing in my share as well.

Blogger #7139 October 20, 2017 8:46 AM

I logged onto the Freestartr system and looked at my original order.

My $75.00 contribution for the hardcover of Vol. I, II and III, placed on Sept. 29, has been changed to a T-shirt.

My $65 contribution on Oct. 4 for the 2nd hardcover has been changed to the original hardcover.

My $65 contribution on Oct. 8 for the 3rd hardcover has been changed to the 2nd hardcover.

What ever has happened has definitely impacted the current database and my order. Everyone who has contributed might want to check their order.

Blogger VD October 20, 2017 8:50 AM

No. Don't check your order and don't do anything to it. They are ALL going to be screwed up in the exact same way. The worst thing you can do is try to fix it yourself, because they are going to go back to the previous backup before I added the new reward.

As I said, just leave everything alone and let them fix it.

Anonymous Causal Lurker October 20, 2017 8:52 AM

I appreciate sweet tea; it simply tastes too sweet, so I politely ask for unsweet tea if courtesy permits. However, I would never decline sweet tea offered by a Southern Lady.

Agree with Nate, that the appendices and listing is a big attraction. I'll admit to the same response to the Monster Manual, back in the day. The info and the "whats" make you want to add more to the genre. The website, forums, and background info then become the base structure for something wonderful.

This makes more strategic sense, to build the art, books, and literary source for the Alt-Hero Mythos. This also starts up sentry posts, traps, and mines to deter and attack entryists. Go elsewhere, unless you want ridicule and a place on the villain list.

Anonymous badhairday October 20, 2017 8:53 AM

Glad to see the standard of artwork is continuously improving.

Blogger tuberman October 20, 2017 9:26 AM

Bugs like this usually happen with something new. I'm chill on this, and even surprised it has gone so smooth.

The website and forums is an honestly improved idea for interactively not just "getting the word out," but also getting constant feedback. It will need good monitors.

The stand alone poster will likely keep me from making a choice between 3 posters or another hardcover, as I can probably afford a second hardcover and a single poster (the map).

Blogger Thot October 20, 2017 9:40 AM

Wait, so I can't "design a hero" for $0? Shoot, I was getting excited(joking). Is the website stretch goal going to be 150,000 or will it be a bit less? I'm not saying this won't reach 150k but I believe a website will be essential to keep people talking ,increase/solidify culture, and keep the communities enthusiasm up while the campaign is over and everything is starting production. So not having one if the 150k mark isn't met, I think would be a shame. This is just my opinion on it.

Blogger Dave October 20, 2017 10:17 AM

Day-um! Vox broke it.

I completely agree with changing the $150k stretch goal. Also maybe consider changing the $200k to $185k or $180k.

Question for comics diehards: anyone use Amazon's Comixology? Is it worth trying on Android smartphone?

Blogger horsewithnonick October 20, 2017 10:18 AM

I dare say.

Blogger Thot October 20, 2017 10:37 AM

A buddy of mine uses comixology. Says its worth it. Can't give you any first hand experience on it, I stopped buying comics when marvel killed Peter Parker in the Ultimates line and replaced him with a black Hispanic. That was the sign for me on where marvel was heading.

At some point, as a nod towards her domestic facility, Rebel should be shown working at her sewing machine on her costume. And the machine should be a Singer Slant-O-Matic 503a "Rocketeer."

Anonymous Aeoli Pera October 20, 2017 12:43 PM

The monster manual thing reminds me, Vox and Chuck should mine Allum and Milo's SJW bestiary for content. I'll post it later when I have time to hunt down the link.

Both of the new Rewards, for the Rebel Figurine alone and for a single Poster, are now functional, although you'll need to scroll down to the bottom of the Rewards until they get them arranged in order later today.

Some of the $ amounts are still goofy; $165 Hardcover #3, $1500 Rebel Figurine, $5000 Be a Villain, $2500 Figurine Only, etc

My contribution history shows the correct $ amounts including $30 for Paperback #3 (on campaign page right now is $35)

Blogger Dave October 20, 2017 1:16 PM

My bad: Hardcover #3 is shown as $150 not $165

Anonymous Pax_Romana October 20, 2017 1:22 PM

I don't have the money to support this right now, but I am so excited with every new teaser you give us, that I'm putting it on my Christmas list. (that said, if I finally book a commercial audition, I'm 100% going to be a backer!)

Blogger J Van Stry October 20, 2017 1:28 PM

As soon as my next royalty check shows up, I'm backing this. Definitely.

Anonymous VFM #6306 October 20, 2017 2:10 PM

Is the website stretch goal going to be 150,000 or will it be a bit less?

This thing is going to crush $150,000, so the question is academic.

Blogger VD October 20, 2017 2:38 PM

It should all be correct now. Have a look.

Blogger Dave October 20, 2017 3:17 PM

Everything appears now to be proper on the campaign page.

I see we're up to three Be a Villain backers. You've already provided the identity of two of the Design Hero characters to the backers; are you going to identify all of the Hero, Villain, and Cameo characters to the backers or some kind of credit given? The Cameo's will probably be obvious.

Blogger Dave October 20, 2017 4:54 PM

Kinda stale Chick. You really need some new material.

Blogger roughcoat October 20, 2017 5:13 PM

The total just dropped almost $19,000 and number of backers by, I dunno, 75 or so?

Database issues, perhaps.

Blogger The Observer October 20, 2017 5:15 PM

@40: That's probably just the thing recalculating after the backer levels were fixed.

Also, will Markku or someone come over to clean up the poop?

Blogger VD October 20, 2017 5:21 PM

Only if you weren't logged in. Anyhow, while everyone's card is verified, no one is charged until the campaign ends, for the obvious reason that if a campaign fails no one can be charged.

Anonymous Spunkin' Donuts October 20, 2017 5:21 PM

Jeeezus... what the fuck is going on over there?

Blogger Dave October 20, 2017 5:29 PM

roughcoat are you logged in? If not their caching is funky. I'm still seeing $130k+ and 1345 backers.

Anonymous Eli October 20, 2017 5:33 PM

I see that there are 5 top backers at $5000 dollars but it still shows only 4/5 for design a hero. Is that a mistake?

Blogger roughcoat October 20, 2017 5:38 PM

Yes, I can see the numbers properly now that I logged back in (I never logged out, but perhaps they force logged-out everyone). It is odd that I needed to hard refresh my browser to get the page to recognize that I had logged in, however.

It's possible whatever change they made just nuked my funding tracking script. Guess I'll find out in the next couple hours, if it doesn't update anymore. If they're playing these weird caching games for the reason I suspect they are, they need to upgrade their database guy.

Blogger Dave October 20, 2017 5:41 PM

@Eli somebody just donated $5000 to the cause; didn't select a reward.

Anonymous Eli October 20, 2017 5:50 PM

Gotcha Dave. People surprise me with their willingness to give without thought of reward. I know we are dealing with comics, but it's still very impressive.

Anonymous Anonymous October 20, 2017 6:16 PM

Looks like the total is still down considerably, even after logging in.

Blogger roughcoat October 20, 2017 6:23 PM

I think it's back to normal now. I'm seeing the right numbers while logged out and so is my server. Hard refresh the page (usually Ctrl-F5) if you're still seeing the old numbers.

Blogger Thot October 20, 2017 6:25 PM

When I log in and go to backed campaigns i see the total at over 130,000 in its graphic for alt-hero but if I then choose to go to the actual campaign/funding page it drops back down to a bit over 111,000. At least Alt-Hero is tracking down their bugs for them.

Blogger Starboard October 20, 2017 6:34 PM

It looks good to me: $130,501 and 1346 backers. Is that the most current information? I’m looking forward to the comics and the novels. Thanks!

Blogger Dave October 20, 2017 6:40 PM

@48 @50 It's something between your side and Freestartr. The latest number is consistent on the Alt Hero campaign page, Vox Day's page, and the Comics category page. $130501 and 1346 backers

Anonymous Golden Snitch October 20, 2017 6:41 PM

@50 Wonder what kind of "bugs" will occur when they charge those credit cards?

Blogger Thot October 20, 2017 6:54 PM

Just hopped from one cel tower to another. And now the counts back up. Maybe my phone was using a previous cache or cookie? Anyway all good and its payday. I can upgrade to hardbacks now.

Your script is providing very reasonable numbers for the graph -- thanks again for making that system available. Current graph.

Anonymous Just another commenter October 20, 2017 7:58 PM

@55 - Thanks for the updated graph, Man of the Atom. Just eyeballing it, it looks like if the current trend (last ten days) holds we'll just barely stagger across $150k. If the long-term linear fit hold it will clear that goal comfortably. But we have only one more big $5k "buy a hero" item to use. Of course, if the rest of the figurines get taken at $80 each that's ~$25k.

It is looking good. Very, very good, indeed.

Blogger Dire Badger October 20, 2017 8:13 PM

Does anyone know what Rebel's powers will be?

My money is all tied up in paypal until the end of the month, which means I will miss adding any more donations, but I really want to support it in some way... So I figured some Fan Art might not be taken amiss.

Heck, if Vox likes it I will even donate original prints to backers.

Blogger roughcoat October 20, 2017 8:13 PM

@55

No problem. I'm glad it's been holding up without my having to tweak the original code at all, since I didn't include even basic error handling when I wrote the scripts.

As far as the final total, others here have said the last few days of a campaign usually bring in a higher rate of funding, so it'll be interesting to see if that holds true for this project. If so, $200k seems just barely possible.

Blogger James Dixon October 20, 2017 8:23 PM

> Wonder what kind of "bugs" will occur when they charge those credit cards?

Your concern is noted. Why don't you make a donation and find out?

@7 The one eye needs to show a bit of the iris and not just the pupil, other I need one tiny bright spot of reflection off the eye lens.

But you're basically pointing out a spelling mistake in the John Wright novel. That's one fine picture.

Anonymous Eli October 21, 2017 1:54 AM

I'm really hoping that it can reach that $150,000 mark with only 8 days left. I was hoping for a website being created from the start.

Blogger Bodichi October 21, 2017 4:39 AM

@eli

This is a good idea and many people are behind it. If the project does not reach the 150k mark i would be willing to help with a wiki if the althero team gave their blessing. Perhaps others on here would be willing as well for a contingency plan

I did some quick research and website upkeep looked to be around $6000 a year if it has moderate traffic and a market place. Seemed a bit high but I've never ran a business website. I hope we get there too. Something for people to check out while the books are being worked on. But you know the forums will constantly be attacked by SJWs. Maybe have an "Arena" section on the board. Anyone who is wanting to just screech about moral outrage or fight about politics would be welcome to do it there. Post that stuff anywhere else on the board and you get the ban hammer. So basically a place to contain the various SJW personality disorders.
