Alt★Hero: the novel

Thank you all so much for your remarkable support for the Alt★Hero campaign. I will announce the name of the co-author in an update to this post later today. I'm a little busy right now putting the final touches on a certain book that is going to be published on October 9th.

If you have ideas about new stretch goals or rewards, please feel free to suggest them in this thread. A number of people have already asked about the possibility of requesting a reward for the novel, either in ebook, print, or both.

As I mentioned in tonight's Darkstream, we're very pleased to announce that JON DEL ARROZ will be co-writing the first Alt★Hero novel with me, which will be published by Castalia House in ebook, audio, and paperback. He's got a brand new science fiction novella out called Gravity of the Game, so if you want to see if he has what it takes in the literary sense, do go and see for yourself.

Vox you will have to add fundraising to the list of things you are good at, Mr. I Just Happen To Be A Crack Pistol Marksman.

Had no choice but to back the 2nd hardcover, of course.

Also, artwork on that latest page = winning.

Anonymous Nathan October 05, 2017 11:24 AM

I'd rather see more content than knick-knacks. Perhaps a booklet showing the evolution of each Alt-Hero story and character from early concepts to final product? Or an omake/side story or two (not necessarily humorous in nature)?

Anonymous VFM #6306 October 05, 2017 11:26 AM

Audiobook reward.
Real wall posters.
Crypto fashion shirts.
Signed prints of pages.

Stretch goal - six Mantic miniatures - for existing generic superhero games.

...

Line of lingerie?
Uhm....$5000 new ship designs?

Anonymous Jordi October 05, 2017 11:27 AM

Signed Print Pages would be a nice perk (for heavy backers)

You know THOR is a character you could use. I'm pretty sure Marvel cannot copyright the name of a god that existed 1000+ years before the company was created. And (hushed silence) you could actually make him a white male with blond hair and a beard... just saying.

Anonymous VFM #6306 October 05, 2017 11:30 AM

Oh! A short free comic for Alt-Free Comic Book Day.

The current free ones on FCD totally suck and don't generate interest in the paid line. A free one that people could order in packs of ten for hand distro (distributor would pay for shipping) would be huge word of mouth and a cool stretch.

Blogger pdwalker October 05, 2017 11:34 AM

Wait, no one from the peanut gallery has come out today to explain what a failure this all is...

*cough cough*

FAILURE! FAILURE! FAILURE!

See people! This is what failure looks like. And everyone is doubling down, adding more money, more stories, more colorists! Don't you know when you've been beaten! There is no way that Trump can be president!

*ahem*

Sorry, I'm getting all confused here...

Blogger Quadko October 05, 2017 11:43 AM

Stretch goals or rewards, on the off chance I come up with one you all haven't thought of:

* Set cases/book series boxes for the paper backs & hardbacks with art
* character posters for wall
* digital character art for backgrounds or online avatars (marketing slanted?)
* game characters or art for virtual tabletops (i.e. iconic or isometric figures for VASSAL, 3d digital figures for Tabletop Simulator)
* ringtone catch-phrases by the voice artists
* display stand/backdrop for the collectable figures
* deck of cards with character art (was thinking game style character sheets more than poker, but either works!)
* art specifically for CafePress style printing - mugs & mousepads
* limited "help title the book / comics volume" backer level
* personal caricature "shaking hands with a chosen alt*hero" by the artists in the comic style
* upgrades to soft and hardcover print material quality like better paper or whatever
* "additional pages" in the novels - not necessarily story, but full page hero shots, environmental vistas ("the headquarters", "castle greyskull", etc.), fake ads, humor, appendicies etc.
* upgraded shipping for everyone
* framed lithographs or engraved metal plates with scenes

Hahahahahaha ROFLMA you haven't even come close to the last stretch goal yet! Whattabunch of losers. This project will never be completed. The backers are so screwed. Not to mention the Art Sucks!

Anonymous Looking Glass October 05, 2017 11:46 AM

@4 VFM #6306

Okay, the "New Ship Designs" got a solid audible cackle out of me.

Stretch Goal that came to mind would be some Alt-Cover type Posters with some Guest Artists. They could be add-on sales types. (Like 1 for $10 USD; 3 for $25 USD.) Boys love cool posters, and this is the type of project that could use a cool poster or three.

For whatever reason, the poster-style of covers from Kingdom Come ( http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Kingdom_Come/Covers ) came to mind. Not sure why. (Probably because I say a video praising Alex Ross, the artist, to high heaven one time.) So much of comic books to the normal American is actually images of the Covers, not the book themselves. (We've established people have "heard" of the comics, very few actually read them.)

Since we're talking Comics, this might be too far, but I'll put it out there: Foil or hologram, limited & numbered copy of Issue #1. Maybe as a joke, but those sold so well for quite a long time. Yeah, a gimmick, but as a one-off and not a standard approach? Might be worth at least inquiring the cost.

There is a Paying section of the fan base that's really big on limited & special edition goods. I don't think it should be your business model, but one-offs for something to kick start the situation could be good.

A 16-page Origin Story comic for one of the Main characters for Free Comics Day could be very interesting. https://infogalactic.com/info/Free_Comic_Book_Day is in May, so a lot of time before that. Something intentionally high-quality as an entry point (basically an intentional marketing approach) that's done as part of the Crowd Fund could be interesting, though it isn't a huge selling point.

For maximum REEEEEEE!!!!! action: Alt-Hero branded Soap, Shampoo and deodorant?

How agro should we go with these ideas?

Blogger Raben Wulf October 05, 2017 11:51 AM

An additional stretch goal could include A new web portal/website dedicated to the comic and/or Castalia House Comics (logo?) mirroring that of Image, Top Cow, DC..ect, that includes a database and bio on the heroes, setting..ect

Possible sale of Merchandise?

Anonymous The Video Producer October 05, 2017 11:53 AM

I would love a comic about Thor coming down from Asgard to kick the shit out of muslims and leftists in nordic lands.

OpenID crapulux October 05, 2017 11:59 AM

The comic isn't out yet, and already the plot is awesome. This is the first comic I know of which also comes with a worldwide real-life pre-release show! REEEEE!

Stretch goal suggestions:

- "Make Comics Great Again" hat with a Hero

- "REEEEEEEEE" t-shirt. The "REEEE" should circle the entire bottom of the t-shirt, because like Ouroboros, the Triggering has no end.

- Larger format for hardcovers & paperbacks, like French "bandes dessinées" ; I guess (correct me if I'm wrong) that most of the coqst will go into binding and printing, less into the actual area of paper used...

- Making-of video, with timelapses of drawings, creators interviews, etc.

- Mug with "SJW tears" on one side, and a Hero on the other side.

- Package deal with Anonymous Conservative's rK book (everyone needs to read this)

- Alt-Hero soundtrack

The art on the new "pentagon" page is fantastic.

Pin up wall poster - now with extra objectification

Anonymous Looking Glass October 05, 2017 12:01 PM

I'm trying to come up with stuff that could cause massive reactions and be enjoyable for the backers.

How's Castalia's Japanese? Japan is a country littered with highly underpaid artists. So there's a lot of options.

Oh, here's a good one. Mascot Character designs of all of the Main Characters. The chibi/super-deformed ones. Backers get vector graphics copies to plaster on things.

This one might take a tad more work, and possibly not doable, but Alt-Hero could use a theme song. A possible Psyoksonik reunion single? Or even in the vein of some of the better 80s/90s theme songs. I guess Power Ranger's would be most iconic? (And, yes, it's pretty much being setup as a ring-tone, but when we get to the Video stage, it's going to be needed anyway.)

Could have someone create posters of the Women doing old-style Pin-up poses.

Oh, ah, I've got something to produce even better types of REEEEEEE, yet also serves Alt-Hero's ends.

Find a good artist and make classy posters. Think the beautiful heroines in long, flowing dresses, and the heroes in well tailored suits. "A new Class of Hero: Alt-Hero". Basically go anti-hipster & anti-SJW. For some reason, I'm seeing one of the heroes in a nice suit, with a glass of bourbon and a cigar.

Some things are hard to plan out because we don't know who the breakout characters will be.

Have someone come up with patterns for Rebel's outfit so cosplayers can replicate it easily.

Thinking of add-ons or merchandise ties:

Rebel boot polish, some things just need a good kick to get set to rights.

"Throwing discs" (frisbees) with Alt Hero branding and colors.

Ghost Dancer dream (nightmare?) catchers for the crunchy set?

Alt-H tags and paracord for mil heroes - younger set may load up on these.

Looking Glass is onto something with the third Prize award. What about Belgian dark chocolate with a silvered foil wrapper? Requires a food-grade mold and a willing confectioner.

keychains, clothing patches were part of their tiers, so I could see a custom zippo working.

Need the write artist to do it right, but if you think in movie poster approach, there's a lot of good ways of going. Visual Storytelling always includes reinforcement of visual-information concepts. Much like music reinforces emotional concepts. Honor, Dignity, Dedication, Hard Work, Elegance, Grace or Propriety. Classic concepts of Class and Self-Control that are channeled into greatness. Real strength is forged, and it's an extremely strong anti-SJW & Pro-Western message.

Just to be mischievous, I called my local comic shop and asked if there was a chance that they would be carrying a comic that was about to be released, "Alt-Hero". They put me on hold for a moment then a dude came back and was like "Okay, this appears to be on some kind of 'Kickstarter' knock-off called 'Free-Starter'. I played dumb and was like "Yo, I'm still in the 1970s and technologically stupid, the last time I bought a comic was Spawn #1... I'm more of a speculator." Dude told me about the two funding platforms and how all that "ish" works.

@18 "Package deal with Anonymous Conservative's r/K book"

Or, for the free comic book day: an 18-page comic-style layout of the concepts from AC's book. Maybe alternating pages by concept for bunnies and wolves.

Concept 1 -- offspring:

Bunnies (fish, bugs, lefties, et al.) reproduce gazillions and let them survive or get eaten as Nature happens. Encourage lots of sex, early sex, lots of babies with little raising/early maturity.

Wolves (lions, Alt Right et al.) reproduce sparingly, and spend a great deal of time and effort raising and training the offspring. Encourage restraining sex till later ages to ensure fewer offspring have the best chance to survive and reproduce.

Concept 2: resource mgmt: ...

and so on.

People buy them because shooting automatic weapons--or at least simulating it--is really fun.

There are millions of conversions in private hands that allow semiautos to fire really fast without modifying them to be actual automatic weapons. How many have been even been used in crimes? This is the only incident I've ever heard of where someone used a bumpfire assisting mechanism in a crime. Clearly 99.999%+ of the people buying them are buying them for fun, not murder.

The idea that it's acceptable to punish law abiding people for the actions of a single evil person needs to die a hard death. It's ridiculous on a number of levels, not least because criminals don't follow laws. THIS! One million times THIS.

I've seen this movie before. If you give these fuckers one single inch, they will take a goddamned mile and you'll spend the next ten years getting it back.

Fuck that, fuck them, and fuck anyone too stupid to see the pattern that is close to a hundred damned years old.

We have drawn a line in the sand, and we must defend it, come what may.

People like us are why we still have AR15's at all, because we're willing to fight and hold the line.

Squishy "give something up to get a seat at the table where you negotiate your surrender" conservatives on the other hand are always asking "Is this the hill we want to die on?" and then running away.

End result? Men in women's bathrooms, rape witch hunts on college campuses, and people of faith being forced to betray that faith or have their lives utterly destroyed.

In other words, they've conserved nothing while "keeping their powder dry" and "living to fight another day", while we've conserved and indeed re-expanded our right to bear arms by simply planting ourselves in the road and saying, "Come Take Them".

The .gov might eventually try, but it will go very poorly for them (and probably many of us as well, but that's how it goes). They won't win, and those of us they kill will make them earn even that.

But this won't go that far. My read is that our people will melt their phone lines and email accounts and the politicians will realize they're risking the only thing they really care about (their jobs). Then they'll bluster and whinge and very quietly let all these bills die.

And if they DO by some chance pass something or change the regulations, people will just ignore it.

They banned "assault weapons" in NY and MA, and you know what the states themselves estimated the compliance rate at? Less than 15%. More than 85% of the people effected just ignored the new laws outright.

If they try to ban bump stocks or anything else, it'll be the same again, only across the whole US this time.

I ain't worried, not about this anyway.

"Actually, Thor has red hair" "Ew, who would want to read that?"

Picts and their descendants, presumably.

"Pin up wall poster - now with extra objectification"

Strong men, beautiful women. That people like those things is both real and healthy.

Granted, "how far is too far" is always a question, but from what I've seen so far, this is incomparably more restrained than things both Marvel and DC have done in the past. Heck, they used to do a cartoon version of the "Victoria" mascot stylized as Marilyn Monroe... having her skirt blown up by the subway vent. This was at the beginning of every episode of their TV Batman cartoon series, and this is only barely scratching the surface of what they've done.

"in the Marvel X-Men universe, why is it necessary to register and restrict Homo Superior?"

Because they have not yet exterminated "Homo Inferior".

"I didn't think he was this stupid and given over to emotion."

Basically everyone is given over to emotion, the only question is which one and of what quality, however many layers of obfuscation notwithstanding.

"Yes... but my Spider Sense tells me that "dicks mcdicks" might not be entirely on the level. Pledge-and-withdraw troll,"

My gut instinct as well. This is actually potentially concerning with regard to the remaining goals, because it's a threat to the "staying out of the red" tactics and strategy of CH unless there's something I'm not taking into account.

"Why would you ever want to fit your trusty AR with an apparatus which makes it worse for any purpose EXCEPT spraying aimlessly into a crowd?"

Is it a crowd of neo-scarcity "zombies"?

"Is this really the hill you want to die on?"

It's another lock on a door that never should have been closed (ish) in the first place, namely automatic weapons for citizens. The NRA has no business calling for greater restrictions, whether or not they want to fight them.

It's not us choosing a hill to die on, it's us telling the NRA to GET THE HELL OFF THAT HILL that they're preparing to commit hara-kiri on in a thoroughly dishonorable fashion.

The other problem is that a "bump stock" isn't remotely needed for bumping. You'd have to ban ropes, cords, leather thongs (read: belts), large zip ties and pretty much everything on Earth to stop someone from jury-rigging a bump in about a minute flat. This isn't about bump stocks or bumping, this is about the gun-confiscators getting to make the argument "Well, everyone agrees that bumping is bad, but there's no way to stop bumping, so we'll just ban all the weapons that can be bumped, including the pre-owned ones".

"Women's armor would kill them"

Probably not, because they'd actually fit (and yes I mean their assets too) into a normal (male) cuirasse. "Breast Plates" are for style only, not for armor value. Then again, I guess you could just say that "there is no such thing as women's armor" and you'd be basically accurate about that anyway.

When ATF approved the bump stock, I was convinced that they wanted one to star in a mass shooting or an otherwise legit defensive shooting that sends lead into everything, including innocent bystanders, occupied structures, and any vehicle that happens to pass in front of one's home. It only took seven years.

1. It's a mechanical aid to ensure you successfully fan the trigger. AKA "One spastic move away from a runaway gun."

What they should be doing right now is pushing to REMOVE restrictions on full auto. It will shock a lot of people, but it shifts the debate. The left does this all the frickn' time!

I'd love to see Frank Cho do a design of Rebel, but it might be too early to try and get those still working in the main industry too involved. There would be a cost to working with Alt-Hero right now, given the specific nature.

Though there's probably a host of EU-based artists that used to work in American Comics that wouldn't mind tweaking Marvel/DC while getting a paycheck, as it's much less of a risk to them.

Replying to 135. Looking Glass who asked what would be cost for a poster.

Not being a print or distribution expert I wouldn't know the actual cost, but having the art produced just depends on how much the artists charge.

Some artists are cheap to hire and some do things at a much reduced cost as a favor to people whereas others charge a huge fee regardless. So you never know what the quote is going to be. That's why you try to get a somewhat flexible quote from comic artists.

They are usually fair, but some art can cost thousands of dollars just for the pencils, and then there are inks, and then colors. And some times you might be able to get the whole thing done for less than $50. It just depends. And then some artists will negotiate for royalties and some don't care at all.

And sometimes the work is already considered a "work product" of art that has already been paid for by the company and so is already the property of the company and so the artists make literally nothing more for their art being made into another product than what it was originally intended for. Yep: Welcome to the comic book industry.

The main thing to remember is that because a poster is larger format it has to be setup differently than a regular page of a comic book or it won't print crisply.

So there are technical considerations but pieces I've worked on have appeared as calenders and posters before so I have a general idea of what is involved and it's not terribly expensive to have the art produced.

Usually they are just the same pages from the comic reformatted with a particular process to make sure the lineart remains crisp.

Because the art is reused it usually doesn't cost any more or only slightly more to have it made into a poster or a calender or whatever.

The major cost as always is printing and distribution. That's not my side of the business, but basically as long as the publishing company thinks it can make a profit they'll generally consider doing it.

A good way for a buyer to collect cool art just to look at is to buy outdated calenders. Sometimes you can find them on sale. ;)

How about foreign language translations as a stretch goal?
Or something else more "outreach" than personal-reward based?
I'd back that.

How about foreign language translations as a stretch goal?

That's not a bad idea for the digital editions, anyhow.

What languages? French and Italian tend to be good for comics, as I recall from the newstands. Faremmo i fumetti....

Mandarin and Japanese seem relevant to anything in comics.

Markku, Vox darling—

My mission is accomplished and I shan’t trouble you much longer. Since this thread is littered with responses from both you and Vox to comments that have been ghosted, I hope you will leave this up just a little while, both here and on the campaign page. What’s the harm? Haven’t you already proven that which I have never disputed, that you are raking in the green with your pledge drive?

(And anyway, the joke was always on me. The work on my own comic project has been greatly delayed by this week’s distractions, and as it is bound to have far fewer anonymous sugar daddies to support it, my labors are now increased.)

Let the record show that while I am suspicious of the overall quality of the final product that will be Alt-Hero, I have at no time suggested that Vox is duping anyone. And besides, a well-cultivated fandom willing to empty their wallets into one’s bank account at the tinkling of a small bell is the legitimate goal of all creators. The donors will learn for themselves whether or not they are the proverbial fools.

One thing that I have proven is that if you ask a question often enough, you can force an answer from Vox (though apparently you cannot get him to put it in a FAQ). And so we now know that yes, the written novel unlocked at 70k will be extended gratis to his six wealthiest donors.

This seems odd to me. I have never seen a crowdfunding drive where all or nearly all donors were not fed the fruits of the stretch goals they made possible. But if you consent to kneel before a “Dread Lord”, your expectations of generosity are probably a bit malformed.

I suppose I can recognize that using this devious crowdfunding platform of Freestartr was a smart move. At first I was surprised that Vox chose to lose an additional five percent of his funds (over Kickstarter) to a service with few if any tools to assist the donors. (According to one donor, you can’t even enter overseas shipping data… will that be the first of many hiccups related to shipping, I wonder?) However, since Vox chose to spread the Confederate flag all over his campaign, I guess he’s been proven shrewd after all. And the world itself benefits! Keep the campaign, like the comic book, inside the alt-right ecosystem. Never let it out.

But drip-by-drip, the donors to this campaign have revealed that they are yet under some illusions about what the final payoff of Alt-Hero will be, and I still insist that Vox owes these dedicated fans some clear answers. Several donors have now commented that they are trying to whet the appetite of their local comic shop owners for Alt-Hero’s eventual premier, as though it might actually wind up in their pull pile beneath the latest issue of the Walking Dead. Come clean with them, Vox. A FAQ from Day keeps the REEEEEEs at bay!

I was involved in that decision, so I know why Freestartr was picked. There have been cases of Kickstarter giving in to SJW swarm tactics and canceling a campaign purely for its political content. We wanted us and our backers to be absolutely sure that the crowdfunding site would respond to such tactics only with a middle finger. Even if it meant them taking a bigger cut. That difference is just the cost of doing business, as we see it.

Is there any doubt that Jason Youngbluth would lodge a series of complaints against alt-hero even if it meant he had to commit money to the effort?
Multiply that by 1000.

That would be stupid. Unlike you, we understand economics and math.

"That would be stupid. Unlike you, we understand economics and math."

To be fair, this is largely a matter of a brand-new venture versus an established one. Many indie gaming companies, for example, use stretch goals as an economies-of-scale incentive. It's the same issue as the Rebel figurines.

But most of those companies already have the design work and are using the KS for printing.

150. VD:
I was thinking that the sequence in which the 16 points were translated might prove a useful indication of places where translated versions might be appreciated.

@142 "I find it's really the book-binding that takes the most time."

Hot glue Vox, -- since these guys just KNOW you don't care about quality -- just run some hot glue up the spines...

(Preferably THEIR spines, if they had them, which they don't, to stick them to a tree trunk. But they don't. Still you could glue them to the ground, then do the tar-and-feather thing?)
