Alt★Hero press release

This was sent out to over 200 journalists. I very much doubt any of them will actually do anything with it, but it might inspire an angry tweet or two like the last one did.
Alt★Hero Celebrates Record Crowdfunding

After reaching its initial funding goal in only four hours, a new right-wing comics series, Alt★Hero, concluded its historic crowdfunding campaign by reaching the $245,000 mark. 2,190 backers signed on to help the alternative superhero series wage cultural war on the social justice-converged comic duopoly of Marvel and DC Comics.

Alt★Hero is being written by prolific Marvel and DC Comics veteran writer Chuck Dixon and six-time Hugo Award Finalist Vox Day. It will be published by Castalia House, Finland's leading independent publisher.

The series is the creation of game designer Day, who is best known for being a member of GamerGate and publishing the political philosophy bestsellers SJWs Always Lie and SJWs Always Double Down. Alt★Hero features unconventional villains such as Captain Europa of the Global Justice Initiative and controversial heroes such as Michael Martel, a vigilante who drops off criminal undocumented immigrants at the local Immigration and Customs Enforcement office, and Rebel, an Southern girl whose superhero outfit incorporates the Confederate battle flag.

The breakout star of the campaign, however, has been Dynamique, a chain-smoking French model whose indifference to current events is only surpassed by her pragmatism.

"This is only the beginning," said Alt★Hero creator Vox Day, who is writing six volumes of the series as well as co-designing the role-playing game. "Fans and retailers alike despise how Marvel and DC are trashing characters they have cherished for generations. That is why it's not going to be too long before you're going to start seeing Alt★Hero games, and eventually, movies."

"I have an entire year's worth of continuity funded to build a cast of characters in a brand new universe. Very inspiring, Very exciting," said industry legend Chuck Dixon, the longtime Batman writer and co-creator of Bane, who is writing the first six volumes of the Alt★Hero series Avalon as well as a standalone novel entitled Avalon: Vendetta. "The city of Avalon is already a very real place in my mind. I think readers are going to enjoy visiting."

"Astonishing demand," added journalist Mike Cernovich on Twitter in response to the news that Alt★Hero had shattered the previous record for a new comic being crowdfunded.

In reaching 978 percent of its original $25,000 goal, the Alt★Hero crowdfunding campaign was the most successful in history for a new comics launch, and is the 22nd most-funded of the 10,553 historic comics-related crowdfunding campaigns.
Thanks again to all of you who made this possible. It really is just the beginning of a cultural revolution.

UPDATE: Who said there was no media coverage? The Springfield Daily has the honor of being the first mainstream media organization to cover Alt★Hero.

Vox, Congratulations, and thank you, and thank you to all who supported and contributed to this first of many successes. I am thoroughly amazed at your ability to orchestrate so much, and build such effective and high quality teams that you can mostly leave it in their hands, and move on to create yet another huge success.
One of these days, I would love to hear you fill the first couple of minutes of a darkstream by saying something like, "Vox Day, of Voxday.blogspot.com, and Alpha game, and Infogalactic, and Castalia House, and Alt Hero and Voxiversity ...and and and and...."

Vox, you rock! I've never been a fan of comic books, and I doubt whether I'll be a major fan of Alt*Hero for that reason, but I had to invest in your crowdfunding campaign, purely as a slap in the face to the politically correct SJW takeover of that industry. Here's hoping you'll inspire a reverse takeover of what they've ruined!

I dunno if there is a moderation queue, this may be a repeat.

But AltHero has brought me off the sidelines. I've been a lifelong comics fan but the past several years havne't read anything new. It wasn't sudden, it was a gradual tapering off of interest.

I backed early and I'm stoked to see how many other people are backing this, can't wait to see the results.

Congrats, Vox!

$245,000. Somehow, I get the impression that figure would be close to the serial/print comics profits for a best selling Marvel or DC title over the course of a year. Been some time since I bought a comic, but immensely pleased to back this effort. VFM #105

Blogger Lovekraft October 30, 2017 1:55 PM

@VD: so I just talked to my local comic store, requesting Alt-Hero. He couldn't find it, of course, but mentioned that in his experience, after the initial distribution goes out to the funders, about 30-60 days later, a second shipment is sent out through the main distributor (Diamond).

So, any word on whether alt-hero will be doing this, so I can follow-up with my store?

Blogger James Dixon October 30, 2017 2:06 PM

> Somehow, I get the impression that figure would be close to the serial/print comics profits for a best selling Marvel or DC title over the course of a year.

The monthly sales figures can be found at http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales.html

A quick look indicates the sales figures run from around 50K to about 150K and the prices range from $3 to $6. If you take an average of 100K at a price of $5 and multiply that by 12 issues/year, you get $6M/year. That seems like a reasonable number to work with. How much of that is profit, I don't know.

Marvel/DC make about 80 cents per comic sold into retail. They take no returns, so they all count as sold.

So as a ballpark figure about $1M/year for a top line comic then. Maybe as much as $2M for the very best runs. One off specials events, number ones, and series specials might do better.

Blogger James Dixon October 30, 2017 2:52 PM

I should add that $0.80 on an average $5 sale (16%) isn't actually a bad profit margin for retail.

Blogger Wuzzums Fuzzums October 30, 2017 4:03 PM

Let's not forget the ad-space in the comics which turn the product illegible, and their bullshit cover variants to sell the same comic under a different package.

Fans have lost such an interest in comics they're not even willing to pirate them anymore. Look at /co/, most threads are about children's cartoons. When MLP came out they had to make a new dedicated board because all of /co/ was nothing but horse porn.

I stopped reading comics years ago and the quality of the writing and artwork has dropped now abysmally. The current audience has been "hooked" 10-15 years ago and they're buying comics in the hopes of finally finding one that captures that childhood wonderment. Basically I think their sales are running on inertia. Diversity & Comics is emblematic of the typical comics buyer, he buys 10+ comics a month and thinks it's all been worth it when he comes across ONE good comic. The new batch of teenagers doesn't seem to be all that interested in comics which should have them on red alert however they did manage to hook them with their games and movies so the companies as a whole are still going strong.

It will be interesting to see how this Pedowood thing will pan out. If it does indeed manage to ruin Hollywood (fingers crossed) it will take out Marvel's only remaining lifeline.

I mean, Jesus, if I have to explain the stupidity of the common 'borg adaptation no limits fallacy' one more time and bring in the Silver Surfer into this again, I swear one day, during the Second American civil war, I'm gonna find Gene Roddenbury's Operation Mockingbird, CIA Asset ass, dig him up from his grave, and plant the flag of the Galactic Empire or the Imperium of Man on it before blowing it up with TNT or a tactical nuke.

"Either way, maybe someday there will be a Rebel DC or Marvel crossover issue?"

Why in immutable fuck would Alt-Hero ever have a crossover with two companies it seeks to destroy? For fuck's sake, Marvel and DC don't want to have a crossover event for some bafflingly insane and stupid reason even though fans have been pining for one since Marvel vs DC. So, what makes you think any side would be willing when there are considerably stronger ideological differences at play?

You already know one of the companies involved. So, I'm just wondering how in your mind this works into personal income for Vox Day. I mean, just based on what pieces you already know are on the chessboard, you'd have to be working from the assumption that Vox is in fact AGGRESSIVELY stupid, and goes out of his way to minimize his income and maximize his taxes.

Now, in reality it works even more beautifully than what you might think. But that's beside the point.

Anonymous Happy Pedo Goy Libtard October 31, 2017 12:10 PM

OF FUCKING COURSE Vox doesn't collect the money. You REALLY are under the impression that we are a bunch of amateurs.

Blogger Markku October 31, 2017 12:36 PM

Countries usually set their corporate tax rates in a sensible way, so that you don't have to pull the same stunts as when you're working with a business name, and so that companies wouldn't have to fear profit. And some countries are better at this than others. They only aggressively tax the money you eventually pull out of the company as compensation for whatever work you yourself put into the project. Europe is so much better at corporate tax than USA. Initially I looked into founding Castalia House as a US company, and in about five minutes I was all VADE RETRO, SATANAS!

He so doesn't care that he ...

Anonymous Happy Pedo Goy Libtard October 31, 2017 4:41 PM

@85 I stand by my estimate. Feel free to clear things up and tell me who your printer is, but we both know that these prices are in the ballpark.

@86 Someone's bank account receives that money. It is either personal income or business income. Either way, it is going be be taxed if not spent. No tax magic gonna change that!

Blogger Markku October 31, 2017 5:19 PM

You can't be this obtuse. I just posted you a photo of Vox's earlier book, Cuckservative. It's Lightning Source. My copy was printed in the UK, but we have access to all their numerous printing locations. So, your calculations of the shipping costs go in the trash. There are no overseas deliveries. If you Google around, you'll find that it is now very difficult to get a Lightning Source account, after they founded Ingram Spark for people like you, who don't know what they're doing. I can't reveal the unit cost because it's a special price negotiated for this project, but even if you think I'm lying on that, you can't deny the fact that there's "Lightning Source UK" printed on my copy.

As for taxes, corporate tax rate for profit is much lower than individual tax rate, and it's not progressive. In a two year window, the amount of taxes paid will come to the same number, whether we ship before or after new year, because if it's the latter, then our shipping expenses become that year's deductible expenses. What you mention, is only a problem if you are taxed progressively, so that the "income", which isn't really income, puts you in a higher bracket. Not so, when it's corporate revenue.

@91 If you think I have paid any attention to Teddy's other book projects, you must be nuts. But thank you for confirming that you are using Lighting Source which, after all, is only Ingram Spark dressed up, which, again, is only just a POD service.

As for shipping costs, well... a one pound, one ounce book delivered to a residential address still costs whatever the USPS charges for it. You must assume I believed you were shipping your products from Europe. Of course not. The price you were asking from pledgers was far too low for that.

As for your "special price", please give me SOME credit for knowing what printers charge.

Taxes, again, are your business. Only you know whether Teddy will be sent a 1099R when this is all over.

Blogger Markku October 31, 2017 6:50 PM

Lightning Source is both. If your title sells well enough to justify it, they may make the decision to switch to offset at no extra cost. Or, you can pay up front to have it be offset from the start, and then you will get a discount for unit cost.

And here we are, with this INITIAL order of a metric fuckton of books just to fulfill the rewards, never mind the actual sales. See how this works?

Look up Awake in the Night Land by John C. Wright on Amazon. Our first title.

Hardcover: 342 pages
Publisher: Castalia House (August 20, 2014)

That's how long we've worked with them. When we come to them with a big order - all paid up front - and share our plans for the future sales, they believe us. We've had over three years to establish a track record.

Ok, fine. I give you a full Credit Unit for being technically savvy enough to find a printing calculator online, being able to fill a HTML form, and even managing to click the submit button.

Blogger Markku October 31, 2017 7:22 PM

It's the submit button that always gets me. "Markku, the glasses are on your FOREHEAD." "What, what? I can't see shit. Click click click, why isn't it working?"

Anonymous Happy Pedo Goy Libtard October 31, 2017 7:32 PM

@96 Really? Three years?

Funny, because when I discussed repeat customer discounts with the printers I contacted, that's exactly the number of years I used for my hypothetical long-standing relationship.

I'm feeling better and better about my sleuthing! Between this and triggering one of your artists, this Halloween has been pretty rewarding!

Blogger Markku October 31, 2017 7:45 PM

A serious credit though: That caricature of Vox was really good. Immediately recognizable. I've noticed all the facial features you exaggerated, and probably could even draw each one in isolation, but I couldn't put them together in a coherent whole. I've tried the art, and can't do it.

That's why I'm skirting the line on moderation with you. You wouldn't BELIEVE the losers that we've had as regular adversaries. You at least have a genuine skill, and one I'm slightly envious for at that.

If only you weren't so prone to pulling crap like crossposting the link to ten different threads.

Anonymous Happy Pedo Goy Libtard October 31, 2017 7:54 PM

If you are so gracious, you should allow me one last link in your next Alt-Hero thread. I'm sure there are fans who have not made it to this dusty thread who long to see the fruits of my labor.

Blogger Markku October 31, 2017 7:57 PM

I'll look the other way if you don't post it with one of your original names, or a close variant thereof (like Darth Roy). But I can't promise anything about other moderators.

My main concern is not giving the impression to our other regular trolls that if you just persist long enough, we'll give up.

Oh, I would never want you to give up. I'm hoping for mass suicides!

vfm #0202,

Hmmmm. How about a ridgeback hog as an evil villain? Sorta like an alt-wolverine nemesis?
Would be cool.

Markku, your replies are giving me my first laughs of the day.

Thanks.

It's hard to be worse.

Vox is living in Italy. It's highly unlikely anything he makes will be considered US income.

> A serious credit though: That caricature of Vox was really good.

Yes, it was. It's obviously one of his strengths.

> Oh, I would never want you to give up. I'm hoping for mass suicides!

SJW's always project.

Why are we giving that weirdo a platform. He wants attention and we're giving him it. Ban him and ignore his blog.

Blogger Markku November 01, 2017 6:02 PM

It's a mutually beneficial arrangement, as I said before. Yes, he gets attention, but I'm almost certain that we did too. My feeling is that many gave more than they otherwise would have because of him. Because he annoyed them. I'm not going to allow it much longer, since the campaign is over. But, there it is.

Blogger Markku November 01, 2017 6:11 PM

Of course he got name out of this, but so did we. If ONE of my enemies benefits at the expense of all the others, and I benefit, then that's a good deal.
