Alt★Hero: Vendetta

I used to work at a Conservatism Inc. institution with a $60 million/year budget, the ~$170k @Voxday Alt★Hero project will be more impactful than the past ten years of the aforementioned institution's activities combined.
- Nick at Instapundit

The image above is fan art contributed by a freelance pro who is supporting the project. If you'd like to see more of the real story, we've added another draft page at the Alt★Hero campaign, which has reached its penultimate day. And for those who may happen to be under the mistaken impression that I am laying it on a bit too heavily, please note that the threats being uttered by Captain Europa there are a direct quote of the Metropolitan Police in London via their twitter account.

The big news promised earlier is this: Chuck Dixon has agreed to write an Alt★Hero novel! Entitled Vendetta, the novel will be set in the city of Avalon and published by Castalia House in ebook, paperback, and audiobook formats. We've added two rewards so you can buy it today in either ebook or paperback format (as part of the trilogy of novels that have been announced) by backing the campaign. Vendetta is a new character he has created who appears in Avalon volume I and will be the protagonist of his first novel.

Also, due to more than a dozen requests for them, we have added two conditional Rewards. Chuck Dixon and Castalia House will commit to producing volumes IV, V, and VI of the Alt★Hero series Avalon if the campaign reaches the $185k mark, and we will provide the digital editions of those three volumes to all the appropriate backer levels. $23k in two days is a little ambitious, but the general consensus seems to be that it is reachable if people have the option of backing the 4th omnibus print editions.

$5.00
Novel Ebook #3
This is to receive a copy of Alt★Hero novel #3, Vendetta, by Chuck Dixon, in DRM-free EPUB and MOBI formats.

$49.00
Paperback Trilogy
This is to receive three paperbacks consisting of Alt★Hero novels #1 and 2 by Jon Del Arroz and Vox Day and Alt★Hero novel #3, Vendetta, by Chuck Dixon. The paperbacks will be 5.5 x 8.5 and 200+ pages each. Worldwide shipping is included.

$30.00
Add-On: Paperback #4
This is to receive the paperback omnibus that includes volumes IV, V, and VI of the Alt★Hero series Avalon, written by Chuck Dixon. You will also receive the digital editions of the first nine volumes if you are not already receiving them. Worldwide shipping is included. NOTE: This Reward is conditional. If the campaign does not reach $185,000, this Reward will not be delivered and backers will not be charged for it.

$65.00
Add-On: Hardcover #4
This is to receive the hardcover omnibus that includes volumes IV, V, and VI of the Alt★Hero series Avalon, written by Chuck Dixon. You will also receive the digital editions of the first nine volumes if you are not already receiving them. This will be a collector’s item with a cover that will only be made available to backers; it will not be the cover that goes into distribution. Worldwide shipping is included. NOTE: This Reward is conditional. If the campaign does not reach $185,000, this Reward will not be delivered and backers will not be charged for it.

By the way, one important aspect of supporting the #4 options is that this will create the material for SIX additional small comics, bringing the total we'll be releasing to 24. That's the equivalent of a full year of two comics series, which should help us considerably in kicking down the door of the retail channel.

UPDATE: Only $19k $14k 7k to go with 24 hours left.

Anonymous Trevor who was Trump October 27, 2017 10:55 AM

Sorry if you've already answered this, but is there anyway to back now at one of the cheaper options, but then increase my level after the Freestartr campaign ends? I want the Chick Dixon hardcover omnibus editions, but don't get paid till the end of the month. No worries if not, I can make do with just digital.

Great art; thank you, free-lancer!
The fact it's a direct quote is scary, and useful.

Anonymous Whitey Whiteman III October 27, 2017 11:33 AM

Maybe a new character...

"I’m a teacher at an all-girls school. We’re always cautious about predators. A young white man with short light hair walks into the courtyard. One of our administrators, Mindy, steps out to ask him what he’s doing on campus, as is protocol. Mindy is in her mid-fifties, a black woman with short straight hair and teal glasses, just under five feet tall. The man looks at her and without a word punches her across the face. I’m staring from just inside. I sprint out and before he even sees me, I choke-slam him against the wall, crushing his throat with my hand. I shove him against the wall and start punching, left, right. I throw him down and hammer my knees onto his shoulders, pinning him to the ground. His arms are splayed and he still stares at me silently; he hasn’t said a word the whole time. In fury, I grab the front of his hair, and slam the back of his head into the concrete. It makes an awful noise and I can feel blood on his scalp. I do it again. Mindy is still on the ground, but is looking at me, shocked. I tell her to come over and check to make sure he doesn’t have any weapons and then to call the police. I notice behind her there is a group of students standing in the doorway of the school, aghast, clutching their binders. They look at me with admiration and horror."

Ebook, yeah, but now I'm thinking hard about that paperback trilogy. Many times it's better to have the printed word, as easier on the eyes.

Thanks for highlighting my comment a the top of the post Vox. I mean it. Not only has Conservatism Inc. been ineffective in fighting the culture wars, they've actually been working against the interests of Americans on the right by creating the illusion that they are doing something worthwhile and siphoning off billions of dollars from what could have been productive uses. Of course there are some donors who know what they are doing, but many are conned into giving their fortunes away in their wills because they are older people who don't have a clue of what is happening right now and how useless or even harmful the establishment has been. I know a few of these donors and I'm going to try to convince them to send their money elsewhere.

I think Vox mildly surprised even himself when he hit 10k (or whatever it was) funding for Infogalactic in about 2 minutes from the OG. I don't think this is surprising him.

Kudos to Freestartr for rapidly helping me cancel an accidental double subscription for third HC; happily replaced it with one for fourth.

Also great they've added international address support. That must have taken a decent bit of rapid work and testing.

Faintly starting to wish I'd taken one of the 5k design a hero spots... no, therein lies madness!

No clue if this is going to alter the culture, but it's more than any thinktank is doing, that's for sure.

Rather a pity ... I was hoping you'd go the way of Warren Ellis or Alan Moore in a sense with graphic novels.

A future "Alt*Hero" movie would be quite the slap that some of these people need, and graphic novels might have made the pitch for that much easier.

Thanks for the graph. Exponential would curve in the opposite direction, though.

Reminds me of the output graph for a PID controlled signal when the input is stepped up. (see red line)

Checking the new reward backing levels:
ebook #3 - 39x, $195
paperback novels - 20x, $980
paperback #4 - 22x, $660
hardcover #4 - 67x, $4355

Total $6190 for new rewards. Project has raised about $21K since a $5k donor took us to the 150K stretch goal 2 days ago. New rewards account for little under a third of the increase.

Remainder would be new backers, or backers going for other reward tiers.

A graph of each reward tiers' backing over time would be great stats for tracking project interest and what worked and what did not.

Started out, "Oh, $30 is a cheap way to flip the bird to the comic SJW's, and I'll get some nice swag as a bonus."

Then Omnibus #2 dropped and I was like, "Well, need the whole set."

Then Omnibus #3. "In for a penny, in for a pound."

That $30 has turned into $120 and I'm thinking that Vox is a better salesman than the IRS and Billy Mayes combined.

I was only looking at the part of the graph right after the 150K stretch goal, but you're right that it has an exponential-ish shape when you extend the timeframe to the DDOS. A steeper curve, anyways.

On a side note, maybe I'm overthinking this, but the whole interaction between Cpt. Europa and Dynamique really does bring out the fact that VD knows what he's doing with inter-sexual relations.

Dynamique starts out mad at the Captain. He turns that around, extracts concessions from her, assumes the sale (never waiting to get an actual reply from her on whether she's actually joining), is almost unflappable save for one panel, and continually projects amused mastery throughout the scene. He's in control here, and he knows it. And though Dynamique is all huffy, in the last page she seems pretty pleased with herself when she thinks no one's watching.

This is the kind of insidious counter-programming the SJWs are terrified of - teaching men to act like men and women like women - while no one notices because it's buried beneath a good story. And maybe someday, an average frustrated teenager tries out what the good Captain does, and has surprising success. "Alt-Hero helped me pick up girls!"

Vox does love force multipliers, doesn't he?  Must be all that study of war that he's done.

I'm looking forward to the results.  I suspect they're going to trickle in over the next year, and I'm going to go "Oh... kewl, another one!"  On reconsideration, I expect Vox will announce things as they get sent out so they won't arrive as surprises.

Now ordered book four so I have the set. Full marks for marketing.

@59 - thanks once again, MotA.
Would be nice if such a graph were generated automatically by Freestartr.
Only $7k to go.

Blogger Off The Wall October 27, 2017 8:59 PM

Getting close. Congratulations on a great campaign! It would be awesome to see the number of backers get over the 2000 mark.

Can someone confirm whether the $150 figurine level "includes the paperback" means just the first paperback or otherwise? I'll invest a little more to make sure I've got the set.

Blogger Starboard October 27, 2017 9:04 PM

Just the first paperback. That's the one with Rebel in it.

Over $180K. I'm going to go bed and wake up to "Avalon, Achieved" at this rate!

So. Much. Winning.

Blogger Starboard October 27, 2017 10:32 PM

Whoop whoop! Less than $5k to go. I know this is the bread and circus portion of the long war, but what fun! Again, thanks Vox!

Yes. He's definitely taken somewhat aback by her reaction about smoking though.

I should note that the way he ever so casually mentions dental included when speaking of the health care package indicates to me that he's had to make use of it at least once in the past. I can understand why.

Just completed the Site-Hero add-on.

I thought Alt-Hero would hit $100K, but never foresaw it nearing $200K.

Make mine Alt-Hero.

@90 Hoping for more red meat with a side of REEEEs than bread. The REEEs alone make it worth the while, though I like red meat well done.

Added the RPG to the digital starter kit.

I contacted FreeStartr yesterday asking to up my contribution, but have not received a response. Should I try again, or hang tight?

Anonymous CoolHand October 28, 2017 12:21 AM

$7k?

Pfffft, try $2.6k

Still not tired.

Anonymous Siobhan October 28, 2017 12:37 AM

Help, I'm tired and confused:

If I want all the comics and all the novels in paperback, which item(s) do I back?

If I want all the comics and all the novels in hardcover, which item(s) do I back?

Sorry to be last minute, been busy, and trying to get in under the wire I'm now completely confused by all the add-ons.

Blogger Starboard October 28, 2017 12:49 AM

Siobhan,
The novels only come as paperbacks and they are the $49 paperback trilogy

Further down the line you will see Paperback, Paperback 2, Paperback 3, and Paperback 4 for $30 each these are the omnibuses of threecomic volumes each.

Further down you will see Hardcover $75, hardcover 2 $65, hardcover 3 $65, and hardcover 4 $65. These are the three volume comic omnibuses in hardcover.

I hope that helps.

@96 CoolHand. I’m getting tired(but not of winning). The question is: how late do I want to stay up watching the FreeStartr?

Less than 2k to stretch goal eleven.

For all the comics and novels in paperback, you want to select:

Paperback Trilogy - $49 (Novels)
Paperback - $30 (Comic Omnibus #1)
Add-On: Paperback #2 - $30 (Comic Omnibus #2)
Add-On: Paperback #3 - $30 (Comic Omnibus #3)
Add-On: Paperback #4 - $30 (Comic Omnibus #4)

Hardcover is a bit harder, as I don't think the novels are even offered in hard cover.

To get the novels in dead tree format and the comics in hardcover select the following:

Paperback Trilogy - $49 (Novels)
Hardcover - $75 (Comic Omnibus #1)
Add-On: Hardcover #2 - $65 (Comic Omnibus #2)
Add-On: Hardcover #3 - $65 (Comic Omnibus #3)
Add-On: Hardcover #4 - $65 (Comic Omnibus #4)

The RPG guidebook is also a hardcover (only available as a hardcover actually), so if you want that one too select:

Role-Playing Game - $75 (hardcover book)

You'll probably have to run through the whole process for each reward you want, as I don't think FreeStartr has a cart for things like this yet (I made several contributions, but never more than one on the same day, so I could be FOS on this score).

Hope this helped.

OK, you anticipated my next confusion! I can't find a way to "add on" the add-ons like on Kickstarter. So I just make a bunch of independent transactions in a row? I wonder if I need to call my credit card company, it may trip fraud detection if they place 5-6 charges in a row instead of one big one.

Yes, as they've got it setup right now, you've gotta run through the pledge process for each thing you want to donate for.

I have no idea if they will process each pledge as a separate transaction or just lump them all together as a single large one if you've specified the same payment method for each.

The card won't be charged immediately each time you make a pledge, as nothing is charged until the campaign ends and is successful (which this one obviously is).

I'm... not in the best of shape. All sounds like background noise, or the adults to Charlie Brown. What I am aiming at is two copies, hard copies, of the first six, which package(s) would do that? Can't do more until ss income is turned back on. After that, is there a package for ongoing in hard copy?

You want to select:

Paperback - $30 (Comic Omnibus #1)
Add-On: Paperback #2 - $30 (Comic Omnibus #2)

Select each one twice if you want two copies of each Omnibus.

Anonymous CoolHand October 28, 2017 1:20 AM

Forgot to add, that subsequent purchases made after the campaign would presumably be through the Castalia House website, just like everything else they publish.

There is no campaign reward that includes an ongoing subscription to anything.

$183,623, only $1,377 to go! Anyone want to be a villain for $1500?

Blogger Dave October 28, 2017 1:23 AM

@102 Siobhan

If you haven't already check your "Contribution History" under "My Dashboard" to verify each add-on.

FreeStartr probably adds up all backer contributions for a specific campaign and then charges credit card one time. Otherwise your talking about thousands of additional transactions they would have to process.

We're going to hit the $185k mark tomorrow. It is kinda interesting, we're averaging ~$110 per backer. I went for the first paperback only initially, and then added on the RPG pack, putting me at $105. I'll almost certainly pick up most of the others, but it'll have to be individually as they come out.

I took "hardcopy" to mean dead tree physical copies instead of digital, but I suppose he meant "hardcover" instead of hardcopy.

Chuck's going to be a busy man. Good work, all! I am heartened by the sheer number of backers. Prager's statement that there's only -- what? -- 400 of us or so is clearly off by a factor of ... well, something large. After all, the percentage of Alt-Right sympathetic individuals who like comics is probably almost as microscopic as in the genpop.
