Avalon in effect

Such incredible support from the 1,700+ Alt★Hero backers. Some of you mentioned the traditional U-shape of a kickstarted campaign, but given the two mid-campaign bumps, I thought it was possible that we'd already pulled too much demand forward through our various announcements to see it play out in monetary terms. Alt★Hero is now one of the top 25 comics ever kickstarted, and may well be the one of the top three comics ever launched this way.

Thank you from me, Chuck Dixon, and the entire Alt★Hero team. We are extremely motivated to live up to the faith you have expressed in our ability to deliver a high-quality comic series - or two, really - and we hope to exceed your expectations. Some of these elements are going to take a while, particularly the RPG, but we will deliver them when they are ready. As a thank you to all of the backers, we are accepting Observer's suggestion to give one cameo to the entire backing community to decide. Nominations here on the blog and a deciding vote-by-email will be done after the campaign concludes.

It won't be up on the site for a few hours yet, but I can tell you what the $200k reward is going to be: Spacebunny cosplay and a photo of the cosplayer signed by the real Spacebunny included with every shipment to a backer that includes a hardcover Reward. If you are not still tired of all the winning and would like to help close out the campaign with a bang, you can do so here.

UPDATE: As the Alt★Hero campaign has now exceeded $194,145, it is the most-funded new comic book ever crowdfunded. Congratulations to Freestartr, to the creative team, and to all 1,751 backers and counting.

How about an original themesong?

Blogger The Observer October 28, 2017 4:49 AM

I'm happy to eat my words regarding my doubts as to the $185,000 goal, and being with the campaign through these last thirty days has been quite the experience.

I would personally simply prefer to let people bask in the glory of a job well done for now, but since the community has pushed so hard it seems right for something to be given back. Since there weren't that many cameo spots taken (2 out of 5), I'd like to suggest that one of the remaining cameo spots be put up to the community, allowing people to vote on who they would like to see in the comic.

How does that sound for $200,000?

Blogger #7139 October 28, 2017 4:57 AM

Since the Reeeeeees are now disturbing the space time continuum in 11 dimensions, no extra goal is needed. Still not tired of winning.

I think we'll simply agree to do it now as a gesture of the team's appreciation. After the campaign is over, perhaps on Monday, we'll start taking nominations. Then we'll send out five names to the entire backing community to vote on.

Looking forward to it! The God-Emperor should be getting a good showing, I imagine, if he isn't already in the comic.

On a side note, do allow me to plug the Alt-Hero Discord server's invite link once more:

We had quite a bit of fun counting up to $185,000; I do hope that those of the ilk who do use Discord can come join us.

Random English Person: who's that?
Me: to whom are you referring, Random English Person?
REP: On your incredibly cute T-shirt.
Me: Oh that? That's the Supreme Dark Lord of the Evil Legion of Evil. And his wife, Spacebunny.
REP: ooh. Where can I get one?
Me: you can't.

So is Dynamique's concept your brain-child entirely or was she a collab? I'll admit I was initially unimpressed with her, but she's grown on me with every panel.

Blogger VD October 28, 2017 6:26 AM

Most of the concepts have been entirely mine; the artists do several variations of outfits and I choose one. The exception are the Designed Heroes such as Soulsight, Ryu no Seishin, and Songbird. Those are concepts I develop with the backers; usually we start with their idea and I modify it into something that will work effectively within a viable narrative structure.

I read the description of the world again, and eliminating the Nazis in 1939 is a brilliant world-building approach. The "Nazis in X" storylines are so boring. (Actually, they've always been boring, but they subbed for "generic baddie 03" most of the time.)

Just part of the reason I'm happy to support Alt-Hero. I want to see writers have to avoid the stupid fall backs.

Blogger VD October 28, 2017 6:44 AM

The "Nazis in X" storylines are so boring.

Precisely. And more importantly, it permits the avoidance of the unipolar world. There is a reason people are still like wargaming the Balance of Powers period, it's just fundamentally more interesting. That's also why eliminating religion from games and comics is so stupid. The more points of conflict, the more interesting storytelling possibilities.

Anonymous Looking Glass October 28, 2017 6:45 AM

@13 VD

Non-Axis Italy & Japan are also some fascinating story possibilities. Shogun Tojo died in, what, 1990? :)

Enough, Avalanche. No one is asking for your opinion of every single artist's version of every character. Look at all the different versions of Batman, for example. That's how it works in comics.

Every illustrator will interpret a character differently. For Dynamique, Cliff Cosmic's version that appears in the colored and sketched pages on the campaign is the primary representation, as he's responsible for the two volumes that feature her.

Blogger pdwalker October 28, 2017 8:04 AM

I've got the two first edition hardcovers and I can't decide what else to get. Should I get the other two hardcovers as they will be limited editions? Or, should I go for the digital starter kit add on? Because that way you get the novels as well and the cosplay photos and the map of Avalon. Also thinking about the paperback novel add on. Decisions decisions.

One thing about smoking, well, Zippos really. At least I think that is what she's holding. Backer number 51943. Got the Alt-Hero volumes I, II, & III for $75.

I haven't collected comics for over 25 years. I noticed even back then that they were starting to suck (or at minimum get too repetitive). I enjoyed Peter David's run on Spiderman and the Hulk, but in retrospect I see that he was a proto-SJW. His later novels certainly cemented that stance anyway.

Looking forward to adding the first new books to my collection in decades!

PS - I can't seem to post via Brave from OSX. The publish button takes the click and disappears, but the anti-spam measure never displays. Safari on OSX doesn't even show the post box at all. I'm using Chrome on OSX for this post as it's the only one that works for me.

Haven't even started other than grabbing a few relevant URLs. We are doing a major Castalia House site design in December, this will be part of that.

More or less. Sure.

I vote for a Hollywood movie Blockbuster from Michael Bay!

The story begins with a Michael Moore mockumentary about the Homo Sequens, part of this farse is being done in good and 'ol Hollywood.

In order to fight the defamation, a Hero... Could be Rebel... Goes to investigate Hollywood in order to destroy La Película, and has to fight MS-13 gang members that are hired as securities for this shady Studio, that no one seems to know much about.

Rebel gains access to this Studio and it is revealed to be a huge Immigration Coordenation and Sex-Slave-children trafficking center. Yes we can go with Blue-eyes only on the children...

She is captured and is strip naked... Because of the Rebel flags on her costume got it?! No spare cloths...

She is interrogated by master interrogator: Not-Weinstein that wants to "know her" more deeply. Needless to say he fails and Rebel has now evidence of Hollywood's F'ed backstage.

Rebel spents 30 minutes beating the shit out of famous actors, actresses, directors, producers in order to gather more information.

Rebel attempts to get support from the people, hoping they will expel these monsters from their midst, but all they see is the Rebel Flag/Raciss Flag all over her. LA is pissed. LA is in Riot. There will be no peace until she is gone...

Politicians use the incident to push for Californian Secession, talking about Agents of Hate.

Rebel has to "Escape LA" (on a paraglider using an Uzi) in her mustang while fighting the sadness... That someone keyed her car. The movie ends Terminator 2 style, with the camera hovering over the road and Rebel saying there is a storm coming...

After-Credits:

The Hollywood sign is used to make a bonfire

California secedes in rage.

Rebel wet in the rain (storm) near her Mustang checking the car damage.

I would get the other two hardcovers because limited editions. You can always get the novels when they come out, and the map is going to be available as a poster.

Anonymous Locke October 28, 2017 10:27 AM

Contributed to the 1st hardcover early on and finally picked up the others (now 3) when you released the 4th edition option. Great way to support a new comic while showing there's a market for non SJW infested comics out there.

Excellent work.

Blogger SemiSpook37 October 28, 2017 10:40 AM

Well, just bumped that up to $194,160. Figured it was worth it. Plus, just found out that my contract is supposed to be awarded here very soon. Very frustrating to have a job hiccup when you're doing an actually good and appreciated level of work, and your subcontract is ripped out from under you the day before the actual contract period ends. Top that with finding out your management didn't exactly plan things out accordingly, and it's been a long month or so.

In the above case, you can smile and say, "For a small fee...."

Personally, I'd think that would be fairly popular on CryptoFashion, but...

Anonymous Deplorable Winning October 28, 2017 10:48 AM

By the way, if the campaign exceeds $194,145, it will be the most-funded new comic book ever crowdfunded.

Looks like we made it. The $194,145 project is something called Lady Death:

LADY DEATH: HER STORY

Lady Death is a supernatural, sword-wielding anti-hero who battles evil in Hell (and where ever she pleases). Once she was Hope, a teenaged girl who is deceived by demons in an effort to save her mother’s soul in Hell. She renounces her mortality for eternal life in Hell. To ensure her survival, she turns to the darkness within herself and begins a transformation into Lady Death.
WHAT IS THE NEW STORY, LADY DEATH: UNHOLY RUIN #1?

By choice, Lady Death rides alone. Having saved Jake – and Hell itself - from the insane treachery of Herr Reich, the rogue Nazi scientist...

Nasty piece of work, and "The "Nazis in X" storylines are so boring." Do gammas fund this stuff?

Is Lady Death a Marvel one? Also, now if only we could create a character as powerful as her in her entirety, since I'm pretty sure that she's a multiversal level abstract who just has individual fragments of herself that are universe+ in any particular marvel universe.

"BAN TIME TRAVEL STORIES!"

While I would agree, we NEED SOME time hax if we're gonna hack it against Marvel and DC on versus debates and prevent giving the enemy the joy of Alt-Hero being too weak overall to compete in any universe on universe conflict or above with either of the two. Time hax are a must in these kinds of things. Also, mind hax and soul hax.

Blogger S1AL October 28, 2017 12:40 PM

Time travel is only acceptable if it involves parallel universes.

Anonymous Man of the Atom October 28, 2017 12:46 PM

Time travel is a weak dodge for good story telling. Look how many time travel stories Star Trek has coughed up over the decades. Marvel and DC -- too many to count, and most useless "imaginary stories" -- also a cheap dodge.

NO TIME TRAVEL!

Incorrect. It's unacceptable in all forms. However, if we're to prevent Alt-Hero from getting smashed in versus debates and give Marvelites and DC-ites the satisfaction that at least their companies operate on a higher scale of power and could shitstomp Alt-Hero rather simply, we need, again:

1. Time hax.

2. Mind hax.

3. Soul hax.
