Dreams of Avalon

This is genuinely exciting. It means that the author of the Alt★Hero series Avalon will be constructing a detailed city map of Avalon in cooperation with a highly skilled cartographer, bringing the fictional city to life in more ways than one. Later today, we will add a reward with various poster options, one of which is a full-color city map of Avalon. If you haven't done so yet, you can join the campaign here.

Speaking of Mr. Dixon, The Injustice Gamer is enthusiastic, not only about Mr. Dixon's involvement, but the specific way in which he is involved.
Chuck Dixon knows how to work in parallel with another writer. He also has been burned enough in the industry that if he trusts someone to put his name with a project, the deal is solid. What does his involvement with Alt*Hero mean? From what I've gathered from Vox's postings, Dixon's stories will be written in parallel, but entirely in a city called Avalon. In fact, that's the name of the book.

There's another well reputed book that features a city and its heroes. That's Astro City, written by very liberal Kurt Busiek. Now, Mr. Busiek hasn't sacrificed all his talent to preach SJW thought, but there's been more instances in recent volumes. So, I'm going to hope that in many ways, Avalon will end up being a response to Astro City.
My experience with city-focused fiction has been more literary than comics, but I'm familiar enough with the genre to be stoked about the possibilities this creates. And, by the way, in the event you are a very good illustrator, we've decided it would be a good idea to add one more to the Alt★Hero team. If you think you've got the necessary skills, please send me a link to your portfolio.

And in case you're interested, this is a concept illustration of one of our new heroes, Ryu no Seishin, also known as Spirit of the Dragon. She is another of our backer-designed heroes, and was designed by the very woman who will be cosplaying her.

What is "city-focused" fiction?

What a time to be alive. Congratulations!

I vaguely remember someone wanting a pyromaniac girl in the comments. Well, it looks like one's appeared.

As happy as I am to give monthly payments on Hatreon for content/activism, this type of thing really does excite me.

I'm not personally a comics guy, but this sort of alt-economy would be very important. Lots of people want to receive tangible things like music and art which aren't SJW-tainted, and lots of creators want to be paid to do what they're good at.

I would totally pitch money towards and be excited about getting a future album/music project by Xurious, a comedy series or book by Sam Hyde, art pieces by someone, etc. I know some of this has already been done, but just saying; I love people of our ilk getting stuff they like, and other people of our ilk getting paid for it.

We must win on the culture front.

This all makes me so happy!
The SJW screaming will indeed alert alien races to our presence.
I can't wait for the hostile annexation of Terra!

If you read A Throne of Bones and related works, you'll notice that generally the perspective of the events coalesces around different cities.

Blogger Markku October 17, 2017 7:21 AM

As opposed to any single character. Summa Elvetica was mostly character-focused, but AToB was city-focused.

I did the "Add On: Digital Starter Kit"

Does "Add On" mean I should've added the first digital package or print package?

I'm very curious about Avalon.

DC Comics has two stand-ins for New York City Gotham and Metropolis.

Marvel never ever leaves New York City so if you want to avoid being killed in the cross fire between superheroes and interdimensional space demons you need to live in the mid-west.

I suppose the first thing I'm curious about is, is Avalon another New York City?

Honestly the name sounds kind of Southron.

Blogger 1337kestrel October 17, 2017 8:18 AM

I've never felt like Gotham was NYC. Maybe it is, everyone says it is, but it definitely gives off more of a Chicago vibe. Thought I read that based in the evidence, it's on the East coast.

Anyway... having a series focused on one city is great.

Blogger Markku October 17, 2017 8:37 AM

I think it's New York because you get the idea that it's the hub of the economical and political activity of the fictional country. Usually pretty much every European kid grows up thinking that New York City is the capital of USA.

Jack Kirby so gonna kick your ass.

While NYC is an excellent setting for a number of reasons. Long history, extensive underground, detailed neighborhoods and colorful organized crime families. It does have a few problems.

It is not a particularly American city. It really isn't. It's inhabitants call it, "The City," for the same reason aborginals refer to their tribe as "The People" as in they are the only people. No one else matters.

This is indeed how New York sees
America.

New York started out as New Amsterdam and was by force of arms entered into the British colonial effort as a conquered city. In it's heart, it never really forgot that.

During the Civil War it seriously considered secession as an open city.

Ask a New Yorker in Europe where he is from and he will say, "New York". Ask someone from Detroit and he will say, "America."

The mindset of New York is that of a city-state. They really don't care about the rest of the country.

And there is a different problem. New York doesn't really have a soul. Savannah has soul. New Orleans has a soul. Any small town in the midwest that has an old downtown has a soul.

New York has a generic soul substitute but not a real soul.

Gotham is actually an old nickname for NYC, dating back to the early 1800's. Metropolis is modeled more after the urban sprawl centered on DC.

> Marvel never ever leaves New York City

Maybe now. They've made efforts to over the years (Man-Thing is based in Florida, ROM was based in West Virginia, and obviously the West Coast Avengers weren't in NYC). But yeah, the vast majority of their stories are in NYC.

> I've never felt like Gotham was NYC

Gotham is a very old version of NYC. As S1AL says, from the 1800's.

> The mindset of New York is that of a city-state. They really don't care about the rest of the country.

There's a reason most of the rest of the country hates NYC.

When you search for Avalon the top result you get is an island in the Arthurian legend. Is this the inspiration for the name? I like it, if so; particularly for that reason.

Anonymous Killua October 17, 2017 10:17 AM

Awesome. Which email can I send my portfolio? voxday@gmail.com or is there an special email for this?

Chrom wrote:That's Mercedes Carrera, isn't it? Did I win?

That really isn't that bad of a guess, IMO. Consider the following, for whoever the creator is, she's likely to have some kind of modelling/cosplaying chops. Furthermore, she isn't afraid to be associated with the alt-right in general, and doesn't mind it being known that she donated generously. It's likely that she's already publicly associated with the alt-right in some way, and the Dark Lord's faction in particular, and that she's also quite antifragile.

That still does leave quite a selection of potential names, but Mercedes Carrera definitely is a possibility. We'll see when the photos come out.

Later today, we will add a reward with various poster options, one of which is a full-color city map of Avalon.

Looking forward to seeing who and what's on offer.

Blogger Ingot9455 October 17, 2017 11:09 AM

Metropolis is New York by day.
Gotham is New York by night.

Back when I used to play Champions (a superhero roleplaying game), at one point my group got tired of the tyranny of the big city milieu and we said to ourselves, "You know, I bet Champions players in Topeka save the world from there all the time."

Thus was born, "The Topeka Enforcers.'

Blogger Raben Wulf October 17, 2017 11:25 AM

The interesting thing about DC's cities, well more specifically Gotham, is that they are often characters in and of themselves. They often do more to define the heroes and villains than they do themselves. It is almost as if the heroes and villians need the city to be defined, to drive, them... yet the city does not need them in the same manner.

If there is one thing I hope to see as it relates Avalon, is a sense of history and mystery that extends beyond the now. The old monuments and remnants of something lost clashing with the new, the sense that under every stone and behind every ivy covered wall there could be a secret relating to the past rather than the emptiness of the tomorrow. That there is some kind of heritage being lost or hidden, but that can one again surface through discovery or memory.

Blogger Revelation Means Hope October 17, 2017 11:27 AM

Avalon is associated with both Arthurian legend and with Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. Prince Corwin had much of his action in "Guns of Avalon" in, you guessed it, the Shadow of Avalon.

No. No. It's too top-heavy to be Mercedes, for one thing. And the hair is too long for another.

The more I learn about Chuck Dixon, the more I respect Chuck Dixon.

And I'll just leave this here-

https://infogalactic.com/info/Astro_City Astro City and its creators have won a number of Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards, the American comic industry's equivalent of science fiction's Hugo Awards...

Blogger Raben Wulf October 17, 2017 11:35 AM

@21 "When you search for Avalon the top result you get is an island in the Arthurian legend."

You should also find a small "city" on Catalina Island off the coast of California... after having been there, the latter is far more preferable. =)

So, I have a similar question about the Digital Starter Kit backer level.

Is this a stand-alone backer-level? Do I just need to back at this level to get everything?

Also, I've already backed at the Digital Reader level, and added on Ebook #1. How do I change my backer level? There doesn't seem to be any way to update/cancel/change things.

Thanks!

So I was wondering, is there a donation amount to receive all issues in hardback? I see a bunch of add-ons but is there just one add-on i need to purchase or all of them? Could i request an option for one donation amount for lets say, all in hard back, a T-shirt, the map, and a hardback signed by the artists and authors? Also, to send an email to Vox is it voxday@gmail.com? I sent him something, just wanting to know if i sent it to the right place. Thanks

Jeez, third time lucky posting!

AVALON and RHETORIC

Cat,

Avalon is the mythical place in Le Morte d' Arthur, where Arthur, the Christ-like "once and future king" - he will come again to lead us - of ancient England, is taken when he "dies".

In "rhetorical" terms it is a great idea to use meaningful names that connect to some of the great "worlds" heros of the historical West. Names and words like this have resonance and currency with the people, even if only dimly remembered.

I wonder if your "Southron" association might be just a personal one.

There is no single option. Use the add-ons to pick up the rewards you want. This is a limitation of Freestartr at this point in time.

For sending an email to vox, you have the correct address.

Any chance of seeing the full design of the character? I understand its framed for promotion but it would still be nice to see the whole thing.

Anonymous Just another commenter October 18, 2017 2:10 AM

I like maps. I'm already getting the hardbacks, so the $35 for the "digital starter pack" is a lot of duplication. It would be nice to see a "just a Map" option like the two e-books.
