PJ Media on Alt★Hero

PJ Media's Megan Fox interviewed me and several others about the unexpected appeal of Alt★Hero:
PJ Media reached out to Vox Day to find out more about his overnight hit.

"I was astonished, actually. I knew that people were angry about the way social justice warriors have destroyed traditional superheroes, but I didn't realize just how eager they were for an alternative," he said. "Of course, the way the SJWs on Twitter completely freaked out over Rebel and the existence of the project didn't exactly hurt."

Rebel has become the stand out hero of the upcoming series who seems to resonate the most with fans. She is beautifully drawn in the classic superhero style but seems to always be losing part of her costume.

"Being a good Southern girl, Rebel made her own costume, and the straps are supposed to be tied. However, considering how often they seem to come undone, she is giving some serious thought to having someone design her a more practical outfit," Day explained. The stars and bars are an unmistakable tweak to the SJW's who get triggered at the very thought of a confederate flag. (Remember this lunatic?) Obviously, Day isn't shrinking away from politics in these stories.

"The idea that there can be politics-free comics when everything from going to the ladies room to playing video games has been politicized is utterly absurd," he quipped. "It would be like ignoring the existence of Nazis during World War II or of Soviets during the Cold War," he argued. "The problem with Marvel and DC is not so much that they have injected politics into comics, but that they ruthlessly sacrifice the stories and even the traditional superheroes on the altar of their social justice agenda."
We also debuted a new image of Rebel, exclusive to the article.

UPDATE: They changed the link because the star in the title was causing problems for some browsers. The link above is updated, complete with new art featuring Ghostdancer and Captain Europa.

Great article. About my only quibble (other than a couple of typos) is that it didn't mention Chuck Dixon. But otherwise, very fair and generous.

Blogger Dave October 19, 2017 1:09 PM

Interesting. I'll have to catch the rest of the article later but I was amused to see the SDL quipped. Does anyone, least of all the SDL, like to be referred to as quipping?

I like th new Rebel picture. Her waving the stars and bars with her very own "General Lee" in the background? Exceptional.

"Those close to the Alt★Hero project believe the marketing is designed to provoke attention, but they believe strongly that it will be carried by a great story and likable characters. And if Day can pull that off, he might just upset an entire industry. "

Anonymous Napoleon 12pdr October 19, 2017 3:24 PM

VD,
Wow, just look at the difference between what Richard Spencer is doing and what you are doing.

Ok, let's look. VD just got the moderate right to pay attention to Alt★Hero, that means more normal people will Notice how converged comix have gotten and than an alternative exists. Some serious people from the comix industry are coming onboard, others are definitely paying attention.

Giving people, especially GenZ an alternative to "Lesbian Tranny East African Wheelchair Batman Comics" will be a good thing. Right? Amirite?

You've spent weeks pushing some poorly drawn comic you use to bilk you tiny fan base.

LOL, envy much?

Meanwhile, he is drawing more attention to the cause in an hour than you have in a year.

Which cause is "the cause", R Swatch? Dumpster fires and multi-car accidents on the freeway draw attention, too. But not in a good way.

Anonymous Sidehill Dodger October 19, 2017 4:04 PM

I hate to criticize other people's art; I can't draw a straight line myself. But I want this enterprise to work. The tummy part of Rebel has never looked right to me. It's better now...used to look like she had a bunch of really fat tentacles stuck into her pants. Now she looks like she's recovering from a badly botched C section. (Hint: you cut the other direction.) Maybe that's it...she had a REALLY bad accident while fighting crime, and she's still healing.

If those are supposed to be abs...well abs on a women have never turned me on. So maybe my criticism is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Yeah, that feller has got a serious hardon for Vox over this deal.

Seems like the rhetorical shiv that is AltHero stuck him right in the ol' unguarded exhaust port, 'cause he's been REEEEE'ing non-stop since the thing launched.

What I find particularly amusing is when he posts a comment like he's riding that the head of a ten thousand man army, but then asks at the end, "Am I right, guys!?" and all he gets is crickets chirping in reply.

I'd call him the Leroy Jenkins of online comic trolls, but he doesn't even have a group of people to get killed, it's just him, alone in his basement apartment, where the walls are papered over with drawings of an unpleasant looking little girl being molested.

There's nothing that Vox or anyone else can do to this guy that the Universe hasn't already done for us.

That would actually be a clever homage to the origin days of the Avengers -- Wasp was always changing her costume, and every so often Stan would work in an exchange about the worst thing about fighting X was it ripped her costume again, or since Y was purple fighting it was a reason to wear her new purple design, or something like that. It was definitely one of the funnier threads there, yep.

I don't read comics but as I've said before, so far I've received a favourable impression of this project. and when did Blacklisting someone for having the temerity to portray the General Lee equate to respect for Freedom of Speech?

simply ignoring the "situation" ( SJW caterwauling ) would have been a fine and dandy response. or, maybe issue a statement noting that what so-and-so was doing in his off hours wasn't a crime and he had nothing to say about it.
