Rolling the dice

Although Rebel, Captain Europa, and Dynamique have been the stars of the Freestartr campaign, we have a number of other superheroes who have not yet been introduced. One of the most enigmatic is Shade of the Global Justice Initiative, whose identity is unknown to everyone, including Captain Europa, as are the full extent of his abilities. What is known is that he is ruthless in his devotion to the European vision and as unanswerable to any authority as the European Commission itself.

You will be able to meet him, and other Homo sequens, in the Alt★Hero Role-Playing Game, which will be published in the form of a hardcover rulebook by Chuck Dixon, Vox Day, and an anonymous RPG designer, and Campaign 001 by Jon Del Arroz.

We've been consulting with our distribution partner and kicking around various ideas, and between us we have tentatively worked out a way to deliver 24-page color comics to comic book stores for a retail price of $4.99 at a reseller-friendly discount. These will not be conventional comic books with a stapled, glossy paper cover, but thin perfect-bound paperbacks of exactly the same size on standard color 50-pound paper. A few questions still remain to be settled, but they are minor enough that we don't anticipate any showstopping obstacles at this point. These 18 prospective books are NOT part of the campaign; we will simply be dividing the 48-page digital editions into 24-page quasi-comic books and selling them through the various retail channels in the interest of raising Alt★Hero's profile.

Get in the game! Support the Alt★Hero campaign before it's over.

UPDATE: a new draft page from Vol. 002 is up; scroll down to see it. Also, after consultation with Chuck Dixon, we have lowered Stretch Goal #11 to $185,000 for three more 48-page volumes of Avalon.

Dynamique was informed that she is letting down the Sisterhood by permitting herself to be objectified by the male gaze. Dynamique promptly apologized for not knowing English well enough to express the full extent of her lack of interest in what fat rosbif women with short hair and terrible shoes have to say about her attire, her career as a model, or indeed, anything at all. Then she blew smoke in their faces and didn't bother to pretend it was an accident.

I joined the campaign first weekend...but since then I've been waiting for news of standard, conventional stapled comics to purchase as gifts/add to collections. I'm not very familiar with kickstarter campaigns and/or comic distribution . Will those be available, or is this more of a digital venture with printed items being mostly collectibles?

Blogger The Observer October 26, 2017 8:37 AM

The character design does have shades of Batman to him. As for physical copies in comic stores, the prospect sounds pretty amazing.

One of the most enigmatic is Shade of the Global Justice Initiative, whose identity is unknown to everyone, including Captain Europa, as are the full extent of his abilities.

I know this is a pretty long leap, but does this mean that there will be locations and people in the setting that are explicitly left hazily defined for game masters to better customise to the needs of their campaign? I know Forgotten Realms did this in their first couple of editions.

While I probably won't be in the market for these (unless I pick some up for our local library), my assessment is that this is a really good idea which will greatly expand the reach of the project.

Anything in meatspace is going to reach places and minds that you'll never be able to reach online. This is good.

Funny, that sounds like--ah yes, that does appear to be a vampire squid in gold right on his suit.

They will PROBABLY be available. This is primarily a printed venture, but based on trade paperbacks and hardcovers rather than 22-page stapled comics.

Blogger VD October 26, 2017 9:34 AM

It doesn't follow from that, but yes, there will be locations, people, and organizations left loosely designed for those reasons.

Great News. So glad the RPG is a Go.

Maybe one day well get some Selenoth pen and paper rules to.

I wonder if the GM would let us play Dino riding Selenoth Orcs?

probably faster to leave this here:

on the kickstarter page, looks like we "achived" the latest goal.

Quick spelling correction needed.

And congratulations and much wailing and screaming from the SJWS ensuing. This has got to be almost as painful as Trump's election victory.

Blogger Salt October 26, 2017 10:14 AM

This almost seems to be treading into graphic novel territory, if there's really any difference.

Dat ass... Vox what kind of evil plot is this!?! How can anyone go across... This beautifully rendered booty and not buy it! That is just cruel, people will go into debt this way XD.

She has nice proportions, Dynamique, maybe a bit too unrealistic for the Fashion industry and their bones and skin standards, but they right proportion to get men's gaze locked upon her.

She is perfect XD.

*looks a bit longer*

"What is known is that he is ruthless in his devotion to the European vision and as unanswerable to any authority as the European Commission itself."

An unanswerable force working alongside an unanswerable authority. Some very interesting storylines could arise as Shade and the European Commission start having diverging goals. Much like the Soviet Union and Red China in the late 1960s to mid 1970's, they can be deadly enemies and *still* be huge threats to the West.

I haven't been interested in comics for decades, but this is sparking renewed interest for me. Based on these announcements of kickstarter goals being rapidly reached, it is clear I'm not the only one.

My theory is that it's the combined effect of both finally some exposure from the two pjmedia articles, as well as the final stretch boost that people have been talking about.

And there's the very special reward the Dark Lord said he'd unveil on the second last day.

Aeoli Pera wrote:Indeed, a lot of love went into drawing dat ass.

At this rate, we'll have arguments not over who can beat up whom, but who has the best ass, and this is before the majority of them have been revealed.

Not that that's a bad thing.

I must add that in this last page, Captain Europa's expressions are excellent. The previous pages have him playing the obnoxious, overconfident oaf, but here his expressions in the last three panels are more along the lines of "all according to plan" and "I knew the child would react this way and played her like a fiddle". Having a competent antagonist for once would be great.

"Meet your colleagues." Group shot of the entire GJI down the line?

Blogger tuberman October 26, 2017 11:12 AM

So, put in for the other 2 Hardbacks, now have all 3, plus some other goodies. Next, need to think of good gifts for other people, and yes, I know they will reach us later than Christmas, but still great gifts.

Anonymous Dark Eden October 26, 2017 11:15 AM

One of the continuing hangups I'm having is price point. $4.99 just seems like a lot for 24 pages of comic, but then when I started reading comics they were 60 cents a pop!

I've heard Alterna Comics manages to put out color comics on old-school newsprint for $1.50 a pop. I have no idea how they manage this and I've never bought any of their books to check quality. Still, you guys might look into how they're doing this. https://www.alternacomics.com/

The average donation right now is over $100 per person. I would guess that's insanely high compared to other crowd funding campaigns.

@22, adjusting for 'official' inflation, the $4.99 is in the right ballpark. Will add the hardcovers tonight - blast it, the Dark Lord is too rational and persuasive!

Thot, I suspect that Dynamique is the GJI's penance. She reminds me of several young French women (not models) that I've known over time - charming, lovely, and brass ... attitude. I read the two new sketch pages, and just made the coffee-spit into the trash can instead of on the screen. Making Stories Great Again!

Glad to be a backer!!

So how does the printing and selling of physical comics work exactly, do you need a minimum amount of comics in order for the printing to be economically viable? And then you just contact different comic stores and ask them to sell your comic?

I ask because I am going to make comics in the future.

You can make them the old way via a specialty printer, but I'd advise against it. We did this in the B&W days of the '90s. If you have a killer distributor, and a marketing whiz, you won't end up with a warehouse full of paper. That printer may want a minimum run to get you a good price per issue. Three or four issues in, if your sales are slack, you'll have hefty storage fees to pay.

Strong recommendation: Digital comics first, then hard copy or POD is likely your best friend, especially starting out.

Alt-Hero has an outstanding running start vice traditionally printed comics due to the infrastructure that Vox and Markku have built in Castalia.

Blogger SmockMan October 26, 2017 7:54 PM

Surprised Dynamique is carrying a lighter. Seems like the type to lose, forget, or not have the pockets for it. Besides, any man would be diving from offscreen to give her a light.

Depending on the nature and quality of the work, you might even approach Markku about the distribution. Having the PDF's completed should make it an easy decision for them. And, of course, there's always Amazon.

In for the hard covers. Happy Birthday to me :)

Jeff Wood - one French girl was a touch high and in the whiny register, the other two almost sang the English as alto or contralto. I could listen all day, just fabulous with that little lilt. I read the Dynamique response later. I know that medium disdain tone in the music! Fortunately I was drinking water at the time, so the snort wasn't a soft-tissue burn from coffee.

Anonymous Just another commenter October 26, 2017 9:14 PM

Already have a lifetime supply of tee shirts.
Don't collect figurines.
Getting hardback, don't need paperback.
Like the map, but I expect it can be bought later when the series is well established and the budget isn't quite so tight....

But if we had another 3-vol set in the initial-backer hardcover as a goal in the not-too-distant price level, I could find a way to toss in another $65, as could another 165 to 308 of the current hardback buyers (for the #3, about ten to twenty kilobucks worth of funding).

Just sayin'.

Yes, on both desktop running Windows 7/IE and on Windows phone.

On the desktop, I can hold the left mouse button down while selecting all the boxes upward to uncover the match criteria text, then move back down to redisplay the confirmation button. But on the phone, I'm screwed.
